Referring back to the lovely shot by Lassethomas, yes, Porta 400 can respond well to warm settings like that. Ektar is better hue corrected overall, but does have the Achilles heel of cyan contamination of the blues, and of excessive blue response in open shadows. I've posted numerous times how that is best corrected at the time of the shot, rather than entering the bullring with it afterwards using software options. And yes, it can be predictably corrected. I don't do any kind of digital printing - pure optical workflow only - but have probably tamed those Ektar idiosyncrasies better than anyone else, not to perfection by any means (no film is perfect), but significantly. If there are magenta issues, that must be due to something odd about either the processing or scanning step; it isn't native to the film itself - perhaps digital overcompensating with respect to the cyan bias? Yet in this particular instance, Portra would be the preferred product anyway due to its wider exposure range. Really good example.

Szabad 4x5, Super Angulon 90/8, Portra400
First tries with Portra400 after giving up on Ektar100.
No, I never became friend with Ektar. Didn't like the magenta cast and blue shadows, and the need to nail the exposure almost like slide film. Sort of wanted to like it but never did.
This is something very different, much more to my taste and more workable. Feels really good.

One of my more satisfying 4x5 images from my favourite part of the world. I was after this picture for almost a year, multiple trips up there when just would not get decent weather conditions for a week at the time. This was yet another wet and windy day near the end of a two week stay when I lost all hope, and then suddenly the weather started clearing from the west at the very end, so I hastily gathered my stuff and run up the hill (to the extent one can run with a Kardan in a backpack), and got there just in time. Really enjoyed printing this one, the loch needed slight burning in and it took me ages to work out how to do that.

First 4 frames of 4x5 I've shot in probably 6 months. I love how using the view camera forces you to focus on the present, really helps to exclude all of the other stuff flying around in your head at least for a few hours, very calming.

I like the tree shot especially. For this shot look at a crop in pano format From above the bicycle to bottom (1600x620), it then also makes a nice wave pattern with the water. I thought the bike was a clump of roots at first glance because of all the other foliage.

Thanks everyone! I've normally shot more traditional landscapes but given I'm not going to be able to leave my city potentially for the rest of the year I've had to think of other things to photograph. One advantage of the pandemic over here is that a lot of public spaces are practically empty now (especially schools and universities as everyone is doing remote study) which suits my style and what I've been going for.
Yes they're all 4x5 shots, almost all of them with Chamonix 45n-2 and a Fujinon 135mm f5.6 lens, some with a Fujinon 210mm f5.6. Split pretty evenly between ektar 100 and portra 400. Home processed using Kodak chemistry and DSRL scanned, inverted using negative lab pro.
I didn't start out with any particular concept, I was just enjoying wandering around a local deserted university which I found very visually interesting, since then some ideas are starting to pop out after seeing them all side-by-side. I want the images to have some form of tension between man-made and natural forms, generally the feeling that one is either encroaching on or holding back the other. I want a feeling of emptiness or desertion, so no people. I want the scenes (including lighting and colour pallet) to feel a bit 'tired', giving a bit more of an 'end of things' feel.
Thanks for the update and great images
So the school is empty, but you may wander

This is beautifully done, the way the reflection merges into the inside is sublime.
This is one of my first 4x5 landscapes, I was hoping for a bit of early morning light on the hills but the clouds closed in when I was still about 15min out, it went downhill from there. Kansasjhawk, that waterfall is possibly the best looking waterfall I've ever seen, did you go to the other main viewpoint? You would probably need a longer focal length for the other position, I used 24mm on a 35mm camera from your position and 50mm from the other position; both are stunning view points.
To get to that waterfall and with a LF camera, I would surmise you had more than the usual 5 day Icelandic tour? We had a couple of months with a hired 4x4 automobile, totally stunning landscape, but the wind is something else, eh?

Yeah I was there for 2 weeks in total with a 4x4 with a roof tent......so more photos to come. Just got done developing some more. I'm guessing I was just at the main viewpoint. Best thing about Aldeyjarfoss is that not a lot of people go there since it's off the beaten path a bit. Wishing it hadn't rained the night before so I would've had the nice blue water. The wind and just the weather in general is so unpredictable. Glad I got a nice day for this one.

afxstudio - Yes, its a nice image; but I would have personally cropped a fair amount from the bottom to give a image more linearity, and to emphasize the upper portion - leading the eye to follow the skyline. A lot of the lower content seems redundant to me. I would have preferred to emphasize the jagged edges of the skyline and bold verticals more, yet without surrendering the softer balance of the grassy foreground entirely. That would also increase the sense of scale or monumentality of the background formations. But everything necessary is there if you do choose to print it in an alternative cropped version.

I might not look Drui[d]ish ;) but that spooky looking block in the foreground seems to be sparking some unfortunate ancestral memories.
At any rate, a great scene but I find myself fascinated by what's happening at the top of the frame--kind of a cross between John Blakemore and Thomas Joshua Cooper to my eyes.

Thanks. Yes I also found this effect interesting, but I can't claim it was intentional. The 10 second exposure was simply fortuitous and created just the right degree of motion blur in the foliage. In conjunction with the tonality from the soft light this lends a pleasing fluidity to the upper image elements, which in turn contrast well against the solid three-dimensionality of the lower half.

My compliments for the great tonal scale, the decision for N+1 and the development of T-Max100 in DD-X! I never succeeded to get good images images with this film, neither in DD-X.

Thank you. For my workflow I find DD-X to work well with a variety of cubic and T-grain emulsions. A bit pricey though, so I try to wait until I can develop multiple sheets at a time. Pyrocat-HD also works nicely for T-Max films IMO, and is more economical. I would prefer to use Acros, but sadly it is no more in sheet formats so T-Max is the next nearest thing.

Thanks. Yes the patches of overcast sky were definitely blown out, but the fog made it so the effect doesn't seem out of place. The light was fading fast at this point, so I'm just grateful I managed to almost completely avoid motion blur in the trees during the 30 second exposure!

I see on the Flickr link that you're doing multi-shot digital stitching of the film image with a DSLR. Could you provide a brief description of how you do that?
Very beautiful work, Gabe.
I see on the Flickr link that you're doing multi-shot digital stitching of the film image with a DSLR. Could you provide a brief description of how you do that?
Many thanks.
My digitisation method in brief is I use my D810 + 100mm macro on a copy stand, a Kaiser Slimlite Plano as light source, and a custom 4x5 holder I made myself out of laser cut stainless steel and magnetised rubber sheet (using this the film is suspended perfectly flat by its extreme edges, so no need for glass sandwiches). After some experimentation I settled on a DSLR height such that I capture the 4x5 sheet with 9 overlapping digital frames, which I then stitch together to a pano RAW file in Lightroom. In this way I end up with a final digitised image of about 90 megapixels. It's possible to get more resolution using a higher magnification and more frames of course, but then film/sensor plane parallelism and/or field curvature of the lens can start to become an issue. 9 frames is a decent compromise. I use the ColorPerfect plugin for Photoshop to invert colour negative RAWs, although they will typically still need tweaking afterwards using RGB curves to get the colours really bang on.
The dynamic range of the D810 can handle negative films no problem, but I've found that with slides it is better to bracket the digital segments +/- 2 stops (so 27 frames in total), then stitch those to an HDR-pano file which can then be further processed to match the original (I have the slide on a lightbox next to my monitor whilst I'm doing this). The difference is subtle, but I've found doing an HDR stitch allows better reproduction of highlight details in particular from the original slide.

That's a really great description, Gabe. Have you also done flatbed scanning? If so, how does it compare? How easy/difficult is the stitching in Lightroom? Your shot on Provia with the trees in fog was impressive both visually and technically. That would have been very difficult to obtain via a pure analogue route.

I've never done any flatbed scanning personally, as I got on board with DSLR scanning as soon as I started using film (about 4 years ago now). From numerous third party accounts and comparisons I've read though, with good technique DSLR scanning easily surpasses the quality achievable with consumer flatbeds, especially for 120 and 35mm. It takes a bit more tinkering and work, perhaps, but I think the results are worth the effort. The stitching process is generally no problem, and is handled automatically by Lightroom (or Photoshop). I've found it is best to not refocus the lens between capturing each segment, as even small variances in focus create very obvious transitions when the frames are stitched together. For best results each segment should also have lens distortion corrections applied before stitching.
The only hassle I've encountered is sometimes the stitching can struggle if it has to join segments together containing almost no detail (large patches of blank sky, for example), as the algorithm then can't reliably determine reference points between frames. Usually just capturing more frames can get around this problem though.
Eventually I would like to get a mirrorless camera capable of high resolution pixel-shift captures (the Sony A7R IV, for example), which would obviate the need for multi-frame stitching. This would make the whole process much faster whilst retaining the same (or higher) quality, assuming one used a good enough lens.
This has a nice feeling of light and space. Well done.
Thank you Joe.

Thank you. I find sticking to box speed (as opposed to ISO ~ 200-250 which I see many people doing) with Portra 400 is best if you want nicely saturated colours. The trade off is reduced shadow detail, which doesn't help in backlit situations such as this.

Many thanks. I've still only shot one box of 4x5 and a roll of 120 of the new E100, but yes early impressions are it's a superb film. Slightly warmer toned than Provia 100F, especially with shaded greens.

I have been after this image since the autumn of 2019, but the light wasn't there, and I din't manage last year either. I finally got lucky this year, I really lost all hope that day, but after six hours of steady rain the skies started to break for a few minutes at a time just at the right moment.
S-K Symmar S 150/5.6, f/16 @1/2s on Ektar 100. Home developed with Fuji-Hunt C-41 kit. Front swing and tilt. I shot two more sheets either side of this one at f22, but the rodenstock calculator reckoned f16 was enough, so I tried, lost little bit of sharpness from the second tree here, but this one got the best light. All in all, quite happy with how that came out.

I liked most of your former Provia images, beautiful colors. Now I see this one made on Ektar and I realize that it feels much more natural and real, as if this is nature and the Provia is the image of nature how we make it up.

Thanks for the comments.
I actually shot this exact scene on Provia too, albeit without the polariser. The slide looks good, still very natural, although in this case turned out a little bit too cold and unsaturated (because of all the reflections off the foliage), which was not what I was hoping for. My fault of course, so I can't blame the film for that. The polarised Ektar version matches my memory of the scene more closely. Memory can be a funny thing though, and heavily influenced by emotional responses. I think that's why people often react so favourably to seeing slides "in the flesh", as the extra punch of contrast and saturation perhaps keys in to that emotional memory state more readily. Typically however I find some part of that magical quality of an original slide is lost on translation to print or digital presentation.
Ultimately all photography is artifice to some degree or another. I'm just glad to have both options in the tool box.

If you have a larger image hosted elsewhere you can paste the URL of the file itself into IMG tags, using the syntax "URL to your image" (without the quotes). This will embed that image into the forum post.
Alternatively some image hosting websites (such as Flickr) allow you to copy and paste a more elaborate block of code that will embed a preview image of a size you select, but also link to the original hosted page when the image is clicked on.

Thanks for the help. Works like a charm.
I took this photograph in Badlands National Park, South Dakota in July 2020.
I was hiking in the back country early in the evening and the light cast though passing storms to the south was gorgeous on the rock formations along the path. I was still using my first camera, an Intrepid 4x5 Mark III, and I set up to try to capture the good light. After using various lenses—90mm, 150mm, 210mm—I settled on this composition with my 210mm Nikkor lens and an orange filter.
This image was developed in Ecopro and printed using Liquidol on Ilford glossy fiber paper 8x10.

I think that images like this are often underappreciated. It really conveys the feeling of the basin and range of Nevada and western Utah.

Thanks to all those who appreciated my last post and returned a feedback. I'm sorry I couldn't reply as I was on vacation.
I brought my 45F2 to Canary Islands and did some shooting. I started working with Rollei RPX 25 some time ago and it's a pretty good film with huge dynamic range and great QC, also invisible grain. But having a film base 100 microns thick makes it hell to develop in a standard jobo reel, so most likely I won't be shooting it anymore.
These are the first two from my vacation I developed in Rodinal 1+25, I think they work nicely as a diptych.

Definitely like the harmonics here, especially with the curves of the swale playing off the receding ridgeline and the cloud above. Seems like a scene that could be explored in a lot of different weather conditions/lighting, though you might think about experimenting with filters a bit if the sky is going to be a constant element in the composition.

I think that images like this are often underappreciated. It really conveys the feeling of the basin and range of Nevada and western Utah.
And I love that lens - shot four sheets of film yesterday, and used it for three of them!
Thank you for the comment! Views like this is why I keep going back. Yes this lens is my most used for landscapes. Wide enough but, not too wide. It's bright and light weight.
I live in Klamath falls, OR, and when my parents were alive, they were in Casper, WY. If you look for the route between them on a road atlas, you'll see that I've driven through my share of that kind of country!
I think they work nicely as a diptych.
Sure! Very nice project and obviously well thought out!

I like these a lot, and I think you are right, they work together as a pair, I think it's the contrast between the detail on the right and the lack of it on the left that makes that work.

i took this photograph in badlands national park, south dakota in july 2020.

Very nice
The day after storm Arwen, still quite windy (20mph or so), so the image I recced earlier in the week was not possible, but I found a tiny spot on the Leathad an Lochain ridge that was in a lee, almost completely still; this pretty much limited my view to this. Weather was very changeable with heavy snow and hail showers and low cloud obscuring the top half of the view, with only brief moments of sunshine in between. The big challenge was to get a gap in the cloud in front of Quinag at the same time as a gap in front of the sun. This happened for only a couple of very brief moments in the course of about two hours spent here, before the weather deteriorated again and I had to retreat. But I am happy with how this image came out, looking forward to printing it.

[The banding most visible on the left is a broken LED light on my V850 scanner, seems trying to get an Epson scanner repaired in the UK is difficult.]

I always think the best light comes in stormy weather, in the sunshine between rain showers.

Yes, the two bottom corners are a subtle, but effective addition. You are posting some very nice images!

Thank you all very much for the kind words.
I feel very fortunate to have visited the Bighorns on that day. The weather for hiking was fantastic, cool and just a light mist of rain. I saw a couple of moose, took four 4x5 images that I am very fond of, and had a lovely meal along the shores of the beautiful Lake Helen. I hope to return one day for more extensive photography.

My D850 digital camera shot it at ISO 400, f/11, and 6 minutes. Reciprocity table says at least 4 times of normal exposure time. We exposed the first sheet at 30 minutes just to be safe. But then I guess it is not long enough. So the second sheet was exposed at 60 minutes. And the result is quite nice.
When we arrived at the Tunnel View, it was already long past sunset. We could barely see the shape of the mountains from the ground glass. Thankfully, it was near full moon. So we focused on the moon, and recomposed to take this photo. Not sure if we are the first one to shoot Tunnel View in the evening with a large format camera?

Interestingly, it is sometimes promoted as a "land shaped by fire," in reference to the lava flows, but it has also been the site of a significant wildfire each of the past two summers. Of course they didn't burn in the Devil's Homestead, a natural firebreak!

Thanks, Joe. I gravitated to D23 mostly because I can mix it quickly as needed - I have a history of going long periods with no developing, although I am hoping that is going to change! I've also seemed to have pretty good luck with roll film using a two-solution D23 recipe I found in an article by this guy Barry Thornton.

Great image...as are the ones in your blog.
Photographing there in the winter, one can retreat to the tubes for a little warmth (and the reverse in the summer!).
Lava Beds is an interesting place to explore...especially in the winter. Not quite my backyard as it is a 300 mile drive (West, then North). It has been too long since I was over there. I have only made a handful or so trips to photograph there starting around the late 80s, including taking my boys out there.
If one wishes to photographically represent a Place, Lava Beds NM is challenging. There is variety; some extremes, but mostly subtle. I have some 16x20 B&W prints from 4x5 around here somewhere. If one can get up and out in the early winter hours, the frost on the landscape is fun to work with. Out of visual habit (my biases formed photographing in dense woods), most of my images tend not to be of the grand landscape. That is...I photograph where my eyes are likely to come to rest. And where I come to rest is often in front of a grand landscape, camera down, and enjoying the subtle changes in the light. Plenty of exceptions, too.

I'll get out there this winter if my wife ever takes a day off from skiing, so that I can use our Subaru! There is some kind of shrub out there that, when dead, looks kind of like an ocotillo in form. There are a bunch of burned ones that would be interesting with some snow on the ground.

I haven't seen the petroglyph photos before, but remember the cave roof. Here is an effort at that sort of thing, that falls a bit short. I'll go back and give it another try sometime. I do have one of those pointing the camera down images, but haven't developed that sheet of film yet!

The pictographs (they are painted rather than chisled) are at Symbol Bridge Cave, I believe. Big Painted Cave is on along the same trail near Skull Cave.
For the cave ceiling image -- that was an 8x10 with a 300mm lens, pointed about 70 degrees up from level along the trail inside the cave...at one of few spots wide enough to sneak in a tripod without someone tripping on it. Deep enough in that it was a long exposure.

This image is a bit unsettling. At first it looks like the developer or developing process went rogue. In reality, this is the cloud structure. Used an astronomy software called PixInisght to smooth out some of the grain in this long exposure.
