What skies of drama! Here are some skies-of-calm to complement (compliment) the imagery.
This shot is from two years ago. I’m at 5,000 feet in the Olympic mountains – a secret spot where I pitch my tent. About 80 miles distant, you can just see snow-capped Mount Baker rising in the Cascade mountains, a very different range. Mount Baker is a neighboring volcano to Mount Saint Helens. I remember in 1975 when Mount Baker began spouting steam, visible to the entire region. Many thought she’d lose her temper (as Mount Saint Helens did five years later). Then she quieted down. Thank goodness. But it’s just a matter of time…

Looks like ocean swells to me!
Nice, Daniel, very abstract. Good eye to see the potential there! Did you happen to shoot any of just the first "zone" or the second "zone" alone? I'd be curious to see something like that as well, particularly the "zone" with the thick cornstalks. I've seen images like just the foreground, but never anything like the part with the stalks.
Thanks, h2oman. I'm sure we've all seen plenty of shots of silhouetted grass in water before. What made this scene interesting for me was the progression from delicate individual blades in the foreground to the jumble of stalks in the background. Each zone by itself seemed less interesting.
Daniel...isn't that corn the type they plant in Illinois between Ottawa and DeKalb?
Yessiree. Taken me a while to get onto paper.
All the best,
Daniel

It's really fun going out & shooting along side of Daniel. The problem is, I always seem to like his images better. Daniel has such a terrific eye!
Attached is my take from the same cornfield in Illinois. We had just spent the day shooting at Starved Rock State Park & were on our way north heading to DeKalb. The corn remonded me of Egyptian Hieroglyphics.
That was a fun day. Daniel, I'm still waiting to see that clump of trees.

Other than being B&W and 4x5, this one looks like a picture I took in Beijing about 4 years ago. Where is this?
Also, is it fog or what? (Beijing was a yellow pollution laden dust, for me).
Excellent!

Daniel,
Merg's praise is well founded - accept it graciously and without embarrassment.
To Rick and any of the rest of you with like-minded LF buddies,
Count your blessings. I'd love to tag along with someone else who is doing LF B&W work of the things I like!

I agree completely with Merg's comment. That's some terrific work you have there. Who'd have thunk in Eagle Creek, Indiana? Just goes to show that you don't have to travel a long way from home to make great photographs, at least not when someone has your talent.

Well, the original posting is for new camera and new picture. May be I just post mine even though not in the same league -- at least it was taken whilst there is a storm going on out there, taking quite a bit of risk with my then new Kodak 2D 8x10 (Cropped as the development ... etc. is not perfect as well)

Thank you for your comment. It was a beautiful day and the light was just right for the polarizer to saturate the color a little more than natural. I some how could not get the blue sky in the right color without changing the color of the grass a little more than it's natural looks.

Dear Andrew,
It was ugly, and it was brisk with 90kph winds, so my day was filled with a wee bit of grief, but this normally happens in late April, if not early May, and this low pressure system is headed your way.

That's the viewfinder. I can use the GG or that viewfinder, just to compose the image. On the text, in that link I indicated you, you can read the way I made that viewfinder.
The lens has a big DOF, I can have everything on focus, at f22 from 3 ft to infinity.

ahhh, I see. The viewfinder, a doorviewer lens from apartment doors, actually produces comparable compositions to the 47mm lens?
Incredible DOF, as expected from such a short lens (although for the same magnification ratio of a given object, dof is the same or very nearly so for all focal lengths, it is just if you are the same distance).
My widest angle is a 90mm on 4x5.

Not quite, I made a mask with black tape to suit about the same lens field coverage. As to those aspects of DOF, I know very little about the issue. I spend a lot of time shooting, developing and in the enlargers, I should study a little bit more photography but I'm a professional musician, composer and record producer, so, I don't have much time sparing. Anyway, I think this photo will be reasonably sharpen untill a 16x20" enlargement.

Right, Steve. You can find the right focusing distance for 8x10" format and 115mm lens here: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
I think it's a good idea to build a 8x10" camera with a super wide lens that covers the entire format. I'm not an enthusiast of those round 90mm lens images on the Hobo. I have plans to build a 5x7" P&S camera equiped with a 90mm lens.

Fomapan 100 is a little bit "tricky", especially it we overexpose it but, if the exposure and development is ok, the film is great. It's very cheap.
Another problem with this film is the huge reciprocity failure. At 100 s indicated by the lightmeter, you have to expose it for 16 minutes!

Great landscapes posted here without any doubt.
I took this one on the beach of the Nahuel Huapi lake in Patagonia. I've posted my first shot in another post I believe. This is my second sheet exposed. The bellows on the Toyo monorail I'm using are completely wasted, so I've patched every single hole I could find but it still leaks through the bellow material since it is pretty old. To fix this, I just bought some black out fabric and covered the bellows during the exposure.
Toyo 45D monorail+210 Schneider Lens+shot at f16 at sunset. Some front and rear tilt and front shift was involved.... for sure.

Thank you Nana and Rory. I'm a total newbie in terms of large format film and BW so'll just copy what it says on the box:
Kodak plus-x pan iso 125/22. Emul 8421. Expired 12/2000. Never refrigerated from what I've been told.
I exposed it at iso100 using my DSLR for metering and the kodak reciprocity failure curve for compensation.
The camera belongs to a friend of mine, he developed the film and scanned it using the Epson V700 (2400 dpi). Well, he was kind enough to print a 40x50 cm copy of this shot on an Epson printer and it looks very very nice :)
Hope this helps.

Don't do that, you'll regret it for the rest of your days! :D
These photos have nothing to do with reality...:D :D :D
If you want to move to europe and find a beautifull place to shoot seascapes you should go to Scotland, there you will find a large number of excellent spots, see Joe Cornish photos.
Portugal has some good spots but you must know the coast VERY well to find some good spots. I know very well the west coast (about 350 miles) and therefore I can go directly to the good spots when sky is ok but, probably, someone who doesn't know it so well will hardly find a good spot to shoot.
As I am also a professional musician, I travel a lot, for the last 30 years, so I know all the west coast. Next year I will be travelling to explore the south coast, Algarve.

jim kitchen
9-May-2010, 18:32
Gentlemen,
Merci... :)
Joel, I tend to capture any image at or near dusk, since the brisk winds in Alberta tend to calm down a few knots in the back half of a late afternoon and, or into the late evening, allowing me to keep my view camera stable then. The sun likes to stay afloat until 10:00 pm during the peak summer hours, and this image; for example, was captured a few minutes before 9:00 pm as the sun was setting behind the Eastern Slopes.
Unfortunately, there are times when my exposures are longer than I desire them to be because of the hour, causing the cloud formations to be softer than I would like, but then again the softness adds a wee bit of flavour to the image, against a sharp fence line, or stable foreground. Its too bad you cannot see the barb wire knots...

Thanks for the info Jim. I've been trying to dial in a good compromise between contrast and directionality of light for large landscapes containing skies. Having come from a color transparency background, it's a quite shift in working methodology (where extremely low contrast light was generally desirable). Much appreciated.

That cold front Steve, complete with its bodacious clouds, should be just off the east coast of Newfoundland today, and heading right to your fabulous coastline. Well, if you really want the truth, I started to shoot large format 7 years ago. It was then that I started to study the Zone System (actually, I still do it).
I've been a professional musician, composer and record producer for 30 years. Still am...10 years ago I realized that photography stops when music starts (when sunlight falls down) so, I thought it would be easy to manage those 2 activities...;)
I started then with a medium format camera.

What I mean is, you suck all the great clouds to wherever you're photographing. You've got the same talent as Ansel - setup the camera, and wait for the clouds that you *know* are going to show up.
Next time you head out, post where you're going so I can get in on some of these clouds

This is Arlington, Arizona...
Dear Bradford,
Your image presents the viewer with an expansive scene, and you certainly mastered its presentation... :)
That said, and to answer your question, I know I do not attend to the smaller image when I present any image within this forum. I simply let Photoshop give me an image while using "File > Save for Web & Devices..." but I do make a smaller file first, such as reducing my working print file to be the width and dimensions I wish to present, and I adjust the resolution to 100 to prevent Photoshop from choking during the process. I then save the resultant 72 ppi file, drag it back into Photoshop, assign a web based profile to the image after I open it, save it again, throw it into my server, and finally paste the files location into some text.
Although I work with large files, and I allow Photoshop to create an induced resolution, artefacts are present within the reduced image, but I do ignore them. I could sharpen the image a wee bit more, but I don't. Your image looks very good, as presented...

Dear David,
Thank you for your comments... :)
This image does sparkle along its lower boundary, and although I was rather lucky to capture this image, complete with the massive downpour of rain and hail, my original intent was to capture the leading edge of the storm front as it marched through, but alas, the front collapsed when I was ready to capture the scene.
Sometimes, I am only allowed to remember what I originally viewed, through my viewing card...

I wanted to use a red filter. The sky would've looked better but I think I would've lost some contrast in the foreground rocks. They have a red tint to them.
Beautiful. I use a red gradient for the sky in this situation, works great over a full yellow too...Evan Clarke

Gentlemen,
Great images too, and thank you for your comments... :)
Sam, you demonstrate excellent work by the way, and to add a wee bit of flavour to your Montana comment, Alberta does have massive skies, clear vistas that stretch for miles, and Alberta happens to rank fourth in total area among the Provinces in Canada, such as Montana's area happens to rank fourth as a State within the USA. To put that thought into one simple geographical perspective, for folks that might not know, Montana is a fabulous big State that I love to visit and just a few hours due south of Calgary, but you could place one and three-quarter Montana's, including Montana's fabulous skies into the Province of Alberta, Canada...

Pure trial and error. There wasn't much info when Maco released its 4x5 IR during that time. I finally found that ASA 6 was the sweet spot with a Hoya R72 IR filter. Then just used my old spotmeter like I always would.

Here’s some forest cover to complement the dramatic vistas above.
During set-up, an owl flew-by, left-to-right, between the trunks, just like a field goal. (“It’s good!”) I think a barred owl, which enjoys daylight hunting; they seem curious and often “investigate” me in these woods. It was “flapping” its wings, but its flight was silent and eerie. Maybe it was showing off.
This mid-day scene is in the Olympic National Forest (outside the Park), Washington state. A sunny day in the rain forest – typical for the summer season. In the coming weeks, I’ll return to this spot for softer, less-contrasty light. Maybe do a study of that tree, arched in mourning. I like this hidden creek. I discovered it by walking up-stream from where it empties into the Pacific. I might pitch my tent for a night. And listen for owls…

Jim - These are great - I like this style showing big sky. Have you tried stitching 2 or more frames together? I know with the bigger formats it's a nightmare to say the least, but I'm thinking some Panos with the sky stretching across several frames might show the expanse of the landscape and sky even more.
Just a thought - nice job!

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your kind words... :)
I captured the image you speak to, as well as a few other recent images, with a "Rodenstock K15" deep yellow filter. This filter resurfaced a few months ago, and I thought I would try it again, since it was buried for several years, and I remembered how this filter separated the clouds by just the right amount from the deeper blue sky. I place the filter over the rear element of my 210XL.
As for the marriage of two 8X10 negatives to give a broader landscape, I did that procedure earlier with a mountain scene that had minimal cloud cover, which I posted a few weeks ago, but that marriage only works well with very stationary objects, and very little cloud movement. As a side note, I could never capture two back-to-back images with roving clouds such as these and produce a decent believable landscape image, while resetting and re-levelling my 8X10 camera for the next image.
I would consume a few beers after that exercise...

Dear Nana,
Merci, and yes the image originates from a scanned negative... :)
I pre-scan the negative with an Epson 750 to determine whether the image's shadow detail can be retrieved effectively, and if the shadow detail performs admirably, I will continue my procedure using the Epson's digital capture. The negative is drum scanned when significant shadow detail becomes blocked and, or lost in an Epson scanned image, for whatever reason.
As a side note, my shadow detail improved significantly, therefore reducing my dependency upon a drum scanned image, once I modified my negative development times and developer dilutions to accommodate the scanning process with the Epson 750. I also believe that a negative's resultant image quality will always be at the mercy of the scanner's inherent characteristics, the scanner's inherent quality, and reflected in the final image. The size of my 8X10 negative, and the resultant RGB file size, contributes significantly and effectively to the original digital information that I can transfer to a digital negative, or print.

Out of curiosity, Steve, when did you make that Peggy's Cove photo. The reason I am asking is that I met someone there who was shooting a Sinar. It was the first Sinar I had seen up close.
However, this was a long time ago ... around October 2002. It would be an unlikely coincidence.

I don't recall the boots or mustache. I was really interested in the camera. I vaguely recall that he was pretty large.
I started the conversation with a dumb question: "What kind of camera is that?" I was carrying my Nikon and had left the Linhof in the trunk.
The guy's response was, with slightly veiled irritation, an explanation about about large format. After I quickly broke in and explained that I, also, was using large format the conversation went to a higher plane.
I do recall that the man was from California and that he had something unique on his license plates. Perhaps they said SINAR.

Hi. Jim
Thanks for the explanation.
I have the Epson V700, wich is an excelent scanner for the price and recently bought an Howtek 4500 drum scanner, still waiting for a SCSI board for my computer. I hope it is much better than the V700, not that I paid very much for it (150€) but because it was a pain in the ass to carry it home, it's fu**** big and heavy!!!:D
