Nice shot Steve. The colors and presentation remind me of the Grand Canyon photos taken in the 1950's when I would read Arizona Highways magazine in Jr. High School. Very nostalgic.

For the past 3-4 years I've been "wild camping" with my large format camera a few times every summer. I seem to end up around Llyn Bochlywd or Ffynnon Lloer in Snowdonia National Park, Wales, UK, more times that a sane man should! Probably the relatively short walk-in, longer than expected journey from my home (sometimes 6 hrs, sometimes 4 hrs) and the fact that you can get some stunning views helps. (Click for larger images).

A view of Bearhat Mountain and Hidden Lake in Glacier National Park.
This photo was originally taken on 4x5 large format Velvia 50. I’m rediscovering it almost 5 years later. The scene was quite contrasty, with the snow on the mountain, and, unfortunately, the film was generally underexposed. I was able to rescue the image by bringing up the shadows and converting to monochrome. It is still quite dark, however; I think it works to set a moody, dramatic, scene.

Toccoa Falls.
One of my favorites from you, just on a formal basis--lots of interesting symmetries to explore (not to mention some great gradations, especially in at the "middle distance.")
At any rate, if you want a combination of Higher Ed and waterfalls, Cornell would be hard to beat--and of course, Taughannock Falls is just across the lake (though even you might have trouble finding a wide enough lens.:))

Thanks Alan, Steven, Jon, and Ben!
I was lucky with the clouds. The overcast day broke finally, with some puffy clouds making the sun hazy but directional raking across the scene beautifully. I took a photo about 30 minutes before which is just dull and boring due to the light. People were all over the place taking selfies, but I waited until it just about cleared...you can still see the blur of one person on the far left middle, and there's a backpack in the scene, but in b&w they blend in well enough.
I think the polarizer really helped too. I need to use that more in these conditions...
PS: I really wanted the trees bracketing the falls, which came out well here. Inside, after shooting this, I was browsing a a collection of old line drawings and paintings from probably 50-100 years ago, all of which prominently displayed trees bracketing the falls. Seems I was in good company!

Bryan your black and white waterfall is stunning. The fact that the fall's are centered in the image and yet it works so perfectly. Such delicately defined tonalities - would love to see this print in person! Question: by what means did you process for semi-stand? Trays? Tank? Just curious!

Thanks John!
In this instance I used my HP Combiplan tank with 1200mL of solution. I had 4 sheets of film to develop.
I have also on occasion used a single BTZS tube stood vertically to semi-stand develop one sheet. I make sure the sheet is inserted further down from the "lip" of the tube so it's completely covered by solution. I can't remember what the volume of the tube is but I mix up enough to fill it plus some extra, and then use another tube to measure out the exact amount needed to fill the tube up to the lip. Then I pour it in and close it up, and invert the tube back and forth for the first 30 seconds.

Four Peaks Arizona at night. You can't tell, but Milky Way is in the background as are a few stars. However, with only a 25 minute exposure, there is not near enough exposure time to record the faint details and the sky glow over rides the faint starts and Milky Way. If I had it on a guided mount, I could have made a many hours long exposure and got a could image of the stars and Milky Way.

Which way are you facing? If towards Phoenix, you'll certainly never overcome the light pollution, but perhaps you could facing away.
I see that's near the Roosevelt Dam. I drove all the way down 88, then up and around 188 to 87 last time I was in AZ. It was a nice drive with some good photo potential, but the day I went was awfully hazy and with no clouds. Maybe I'll get lucky next time.

Steven, it's a good landscape. On my monitor, though, it looks too blue and too magenta. It can help to make a color balance layer. Now move each of the sliders from one side to the other, watching what happens. That way you can fairly quickly hone in on what looks best. For me (and my monitor) that meant +6 green and -25 blue.
Steven Ruttenberg
6-Feb-2020, 08:42
Actually I did that, I may have added too much blue. Let me go back and see what my settings are. I can send/post image without color balance. I will try your settings as well. I was trying for a color look as it appeared to warm to me, but I probably went too far.
Thanks for the suggestions. They are always very good at improving my images.

There is a light pollution filter I am gonna try, filters out yellow sodium light frequency. I had to remove yellow from the sky in this scene.
I know that drive well. Right now it is shutdown because of fire last year at Superstitions.

I used Kodachrome exclusively for as long as I could get it, first in 120 rolls, later in 35mm as that was all that was left. Mine was among the final batches processed by Duane's the year after Kodak discontinued it completely. My guess is that beyond the cost and issues around the chemistry required, Velvia had a large part in killing it off, I know I went in that direction for a few years and found it superior for grey, rainy, or green landscapes, while Kodak was better at natural colors, people, and drier terrain.
It was sad to see it go, I'd still be shooting it today if it were still available.

The crested saguaro is a rare "fellow being" of the Sonoran Desert. A Garnegiea Gigantea unicorn if you will. Having lived in Arizona all my life, this is the first crested saguaro I've seen in person. It was a special treat to photograph.

Funny thing I encountered while photographing saguaros...on a clear, bright, absolutely still day - was that every few seconds some of them would "resonate" for a few seconds at a time, the intermittent movements being left over from high winds earlier in the day. So my timing had to be perfect - otherwise my images would not be needle-sharp (ouch!).

Well, I don't usually salvage a color image by making it bw, but in this case it sorta did. By far, not the best, but it does highlight just how difficult it is to shoot the Grand Canyon. Didn't clean up the dust spots from scan.

Orgraph, I can imagine that the silver print offers far more than this representation of you r fine photograph. Indeed, it does capture the sense of cold. Rendering textures in such scenes is demanding, and the pixel monitor -- at least mine -- can't do it justice. But I'm glad you posted it!

Saddened by the destruction caused by the recent bushfires in Australia I decided to revisit some of the 8x10 negatives I made when living in part of the affected area during the 80s. This place was the centre of the universe for me, being close to pristine coast, cool temperate rainforests and only a short drive to the Australian Alps. From what I can ascertain very little has remained untouched by the fires. As well as 8x10s I also have 6x6 negs from the 80s and 4x5s from subsequent revisits to the area. I doubt that I will see it in anything like that condition again. The following are contact prints made on Ilford MGFB Warmtone developed in ID-78. Unfortunately the huge scans have suffered greatly in their reduction for web viewing, but that's life. My homage to a once beautiful country.
1 & 2. Podocarpus aff. lawrenci, Errinundra Plum Pine. Known from only a few locations in the Errinundra Plateau region, these few small groups of trees are the only remnants from the time when Tasmania was joined to the Australian mainland at the time of the last ice age. (Two views: 480mm Rodenstock Apo-Ronar, FP4 at ASA 64, Rodinal 1+50)
3. Cliff, The Sisters (also known as Three Sisters). A rocky escarpment formed by uplifting of Devonian sediments, and dramatic in presence. The front standard had to be raised to such an extent that a shadow occurs at the bottom of the neg, from upper bellows. (480mm Rodenstock Apo-Ronar, FP4 at ASA 25, ABC Pyro.)
4. Clematis aristata, Mountain Clematis, can be found climbing into the crowns of tall forest trees. A beautiful sight, as I saw last November when I traveled through the area. I resolved to return with some cameras in Spring 2020, but alas what I saw is sadly no longer there. It'll return, but not in my lifetime. This specimen was climbing well into the crown of a Mountain Ash tree. (Tri-X at ASA160, 480mm Apo-Ronar, HC110 1+15.)

5. Vine stems on forest floor. (FP4 at ASA50, Kodak 10" Commercial Ektar, D7 developer.)
6. Mountain Clematis on log. These wonderful plants climb and scramble over everything and are a truly beautiful sight. (FP4 at ASA50, 480mm Apo Ronar.)
7. Morinda jasminoides, Jasmine Morinda. Another example of botanical diversity in temperate rainforests. This one in Lind National Park. (TXP at ASA160, 10" Commercial Ektar, HC110 1+15.)
8. Forest Regrowth. Three years after the 1983 fires in the area, this patch of bush is regenerating nicely. But it takes time. Fire-killed trees remain standing as stark reminders of what has passed. (FP4 at ASA64, 10" Commercial Ektar, D7 Pyro.)

My homage to a once beautiful country.
A great project--I've not experienced such total devastation, but we recently lost a few thousand acres of old growth here in the Smoky Mountains in a watershed I know well. As you say, it's all a bit depressing when viewed from a human time horizon, but I hope you'll find cause for optimism in the upcoming years.:)

Great to see those images, Barry. I've spent many days on the Errinundra Plateau and surrounding forests. Grant Da Costa and David Tatnall's work in Gippsland in the 80's were one of my major inspirations for getting into photography seriously and shooting Large Format.
It's been heartbreaking to see the impact of the fires throughout East Gippsland, let alone the rest of the east coast.
Looking forward to seeing what else you have in the archives
All the best,

Steven, I really like them both very much. The tree image, while still taken at the Grand Canyon, is much more intimate than your usual sweeping vistas, it is well seen, and as if any proof was needed, shows you are equally at home with smaller, as opposed to grander, scenes. And having said all that, your Cape Royal is spectacular, I hope you don't agonize over more post-processing, it is wonderful just as it is.

Thank you all. I appreciate all the compliments. I am really trying to not over think the post-processing. Just make sure it looks good with no obvious color casts. I am working on seeing the smaller things like the tree, but it is hard. Again, thank you for the compliments.

Jim Jones
5-Mar-2020, 11:29
Natenaaron -- If they are like a few photographers I know, those gadgets on the cameras are flashes so they can brighten up the shadows on distant rock formations.
Probably remote triggers/controls, which nowadays work through the hotshoe.
Ain't much a teeny-tiny flash is going to do out there.
Steven Ruttenberg
5-Mar-2020, 12:29
They are lightening triggers. They were part of a workshop to photograph lightening that was occuring on the South rim (distant rim) Those things were set so sensitive they were constantly tripping their cameras with no success. If they had a camera converted to full spectrum with a 720nm or 850nm filter on, they would have got lightening which was almost exclusively behind the clouds. A UV filter of about 380nm or so, might also have picked up lightening.
Hi Steve,
cool shot. What was the shutter speed? 1/4 second, or maybe 1/2?

Cape Royal Grand Canyon North. Wotans Throne is to the left. BW shot on Acros100. 75mm Nikkor, f/4.5@f/32. Sunset. Used Red 25A filter. Not sure why the negative is so grainy. Either I miscalculated the exposure for it or I didn't develop it correctly or both. But, I managed to get a presentable image out of it.

Haha, I did take some heavy rain for that one !
But rain wasn't the biggest issue : wind was !
I had to keep a hand holding the tripod all the time.
Glad you like it.

Hi Steve,
cool shot. What was the shutter speed? 1/4 second, or maybe 1/2?
Don't remember notes are packed away at the moment. Probably in that range. Maybe 1 or 2 sec. Need to dig notes out.

Another Grand Canyon North image. Grand Canyon North, east of Cape Royal on South Side. 90mm Schneider Super Angulon f/5.6@f/32. Acros 100, no filters. Posted the image from Flickr, Zenfolio, and my computer. This one looked like it got crispied after upload to Flickr/Zenfolio. Can definitely see a difference.

Thanks! It's tough to find a good composition when rushing to get setup in the early-morning light and find something as the sun is starting to rise. I just grabbed the Mercury / 47mm and made a good guess at a composition with the tree in the foreground jutting out and shot 3 sheets (one color sheet to be developed).

Steve, do I recall correctly that some of your shots of the Grand Canyon and Arizona desert were rather long exposures, on the scale of minutes rather than seconds?
If so, I'd like to know more, the why, how, what, as well as dealing with reciprocity with long exposure times. It looks like something I'd like to experiment with.
Thanks.

The primary reason is I shoot before the sun has come up and after it has gone down, 2nd is because I shoot at f/32 most of the time using iso100 film for bw/Extar and 160 for Portra. This necessitates upwards of 3-5 minute exposures. Add on a 3 stop red filter and it can be more. For night shots I will do really long exposures partly from reciprocity. I try to use Tmax or Acros as they have the best reciprocity. For color it can get tricky with color casts if the exposure is too long and then you need a color filter to correct for it (but I have done that yet)
Another reason for a long exposure is motion blur of water/clouds and to remove people from the scene who tend to walk thru it like when photographing architecture where I will use a 5 stop, 16 stop nd filter. I need to complete my set out of grad nd and nd filters as well as my rgb, and set of bw filters.
I will put together the how and send to you tonight I hope. It is a really cool form of shooting. Especially if you make a super long exposure, like over 24 hours (which I have not done yet, but want to try).

Wow! That's a really impressive image, Corran.
As nice as I've seen in ages.
Thanks for sharing, I was especially intrigued by the color shots you had posted that were taken early/late, as they had a really special look to them, and correcting for color (as you point out) is non-trivial at such long exposures.
I have used CC filters in Egypt with my MF gear to correct at early morning and midday, one being a bit too blue, the other too red/white, but it's been a few years.
The blur/people removal feature of some of the denser grads is pretty amazing, and on my list of things to try. I like the look of the sea between 1/4 - 1 second, haven't tried longer, but wonder if it won't turn into just a diffuse haze.
No hurry at all, I really appreciate you sharing. I'm sure many people here on the list would appreciate hearing more about it!

This really good. Especially for doing quickly. I looked at the 47mm. Do you have any issues using movements? I usually just shift or rise/fall. Occasionally I use tilts.
Thanks George and Steven.
About the 47mm XL - this is not a lens designed for extensive movements, and the camera I have pretty much permanently mounted it to is a scale-focus, 3D-printed plastic camera. There is no need for movements really, though there is a tiny bit of excess IC. Take a look at the data sheets, and make sure you are looking at the XL model.
Thank you.

I looked before, but will look again. It works well so long as no movements, but shooting panorama format it would allow for some. On my list of lenses to get.

As it is not directly related to LF Landscapes, I'm not sure if I should answer your question here.
But here it is : Theoretically I'm not allowed to.
Only 4 reasons are valid for being away from home.
Shopping for food or really necessary supplies
Medical appointment or seeking medical attention (related or not to the virus)
Going to work if you aren't able to work from home (employers have to deliver certificates to their employees proving they are needed physically at work in case of control)
Doing physical exercise (like jogging, no collective sports) or walking the dog alone in the immediate proximity of your home
Police are doing controls on main roads and in cities. And are allowed to deliver fines (135€) to people in violation with this.
That being said, I live in the countryside (as you can see on the pics) and I think I could drive tens of kilometres without seeing any police cars.
And surely I wouldn't be near anyone doing this landscape work, apart from cows and sheep haha.
Though, I will not risk it nonetheless. Plus, I tend to be a very law obedient citizen.
So I'll just wait.
But I'm lucky : weather is announced to be very sunny in the coming weeks. And I'm not really a sunny weather photographer haha.
But I don't know, in ten days or 2 weeks I just might not resist and hike with my LF equipment from my home to expose some film in the woods near my village.
Who would argue that it isn't "doing physical exercise" ?

M.Apffel, Thank you for response. To clarify, my question was meant to relate to LF photography, since many of the European restrictions are being implemented here, sometimes with a time delay. So I asked out of self interest, I now suspect that our ability to go out with our cameras may also be curtailed in the near future. I may have to start thinking about indoor still life’s!

I understand. And I think you are right, the wave will come to you eventually. As I was writing my answer I was wondering what was the situation in the US.
And I saw the threads "Still Life 2020" and "Around the house" coming up as a sign you guys were preparing for the same confinement measures, if not already under it.
I never had inspiration for still life in LF (or in any format for that matter). That might be the occasion to try !
In any case, take good care of you, everyone. And I wish you all inspiration for indoor LF shooting !

Thanks. It was a bit hard to find a shadow to meter! The shadow at the bottom of the tree was EV 10 and the brightest highlight I could find was EV 15. I placed the shadow on Zone III. It’s FP4, and I used a yellow filter, so my exposure was at ei 50, instead of 100. Although a lot of people would have just done N, I gave it N-1 development, which for me is Pyrocat 1:1:100 for 9 minutes with 15 seconds agitation at first and 10 seconds every minute, hand inversions in a JOBO tank.

Im learning about the large format camera 5x4 at the moment for my Uni assignment,But i didn't get chance use them in uni yet as this lockdown took place. But I can not wait to start using then and learning a bit more about large format camera.
Having just mentioned in a previous post that I might adjust my Lee wide-angle hood down to one slot so that my landscape polariser doesn't vignette, I've found an image that suggests to me that I should actually probably keep it as is.

Excellent!
Beautiful Dave!
I love the delicacy of the sky juxtaposed with the sharpness and detail of the grain.

Nice shot Steven. Are the colors all correct? I have found (MF film) that I always had some trouble getting Ektar 100 right which is why I went back to Velvia 50.

Thank you.
Yes. They are correct. But that is also a subjective thing since we are not looking to match a color based on its patented blend, but on how we interpret the scene. I find Extar to be in your face with color and this is no exception. I actually desaturated it quite a bit.

Thanks all. I'll have to give this one a go in the darkroom. Still a novice at RA-4 so I have been shooting some C-41 lately to get in some practice.

Does anyone know where users can buy the Mercury 4x5 3D-printed camera? I checked out their website at mercurycamera.com, but there are no sales through the website.
I would email him directly:

That's a really nice look, Bryan. I have the same lens, but I haven't used it yet. Time to give it a try!
I like it on 5x7 for the "normal" focal length look, rather than 4x5 where it is too long for me. Looking forward to seeing what you shoot with yours!

Another from Crowden Clough, Peak District National Park, UK on the same wet January day. Further upstream from the earlier waterfall there's this really wonderful geological features - the riverbed becomes very geometrical with lots of regular, cubic structure, like smal basalt columns.

Where the Wild Things Are
http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/backyard-5379ss.jpg
I think we sometimes forget how close we are to wild nature, while warm and tight in our abodes with the doors locked. A couple weeks ago I was woken up by a terrible racket - a coyote, I believe, killing something and letting the whole neighborhood know, and some poor animal wailing for help. My backyard, since I have a basement, is a steep hill with thick forest land down to the bottom, where a small creek flows. Recent rains have made the creek flow quite well and this thicket of fallen trees with the muddy remains of the burgeoning creek reminded me of that coyote, perhaps looking for a meal while near a watering hole, so I busted out my 8x20 as the sun started to fade behind the hill to make this photograph. There's something about the spring backlight in thick forest that is evocative of the north GA area for me, a reminder of my early years when I would scramble over trees felled over the creek in my parents backyard and explore acres and acres of untouched forestland (which now is just more urban sprawl).
