Yes, looks great. And a good choice of timber for the frame. I have a small stock of Huon Pine I bought for camera making. If it's good enough for boats and furniture, it'll do for cameras too... or at least that was my reasoning. I'm trying it out on a 5x7, will post the results.

Dark or black seems to be preferred for framing B&W prints. But I have a few frames I've made from the sap wood of blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) which work very well.

Barry a huon pine camera would be absolutely amazing. I would pay money just to see that thing! I have a real deep personal love for huon pine as my grandmothers house was made and furnished with it so it brings back some great memories. Nothing like the smell of it. It''s other-worldly

The profile of the frame in my picture is 811, I'm thinking of something of a thinner profile maybe 810 just so it's not so heavy around the edges.

I almost went for blackwood but the opportunity to use sacred huon pine made by myself to frame my handmade ambrotype photos was too hard of an opportunity to pass up. It's all very special to me
I digress I should save this for a other thread on topic

Please keep me updated on the camera.. I may even ask to commission one of you're up for it. I asked my uncle about making me a huon pine camera and he said it wouldnt be worth the cost of the timber

Can you use Black Heart Sassafras? Love the look of that stuff!

I know that it’s sourced in Tassie. I just don’t know its availability, its use for frames, nor its structural qualities for cameras.

I should finish my 7x17 build one day. I’m using Aussie Chestnut for that one. Very hard, both on the toughness scale and on the tools!

Very hard, both on the toughness scale and on the tools!my boss did actually give me a few pieces of black heart sassafras to play with but the profile was a little heavy for what I want. I could perhaps order some but it is expensive and hard to get stuff with the nice black grain as all the premium stuff is reserved for bigger stuff like furniture and cabinet making.

get back on that 7x17, man... it's been ages!

Very nice image. For me my eye is looking for an extension of the reflection in the lake in the left foreground extending to the center and right foreground. A wider angle lens and a lower camera position would compress the foreground and add the complimentary reflection detail. Next time.

A bit of a slide vs. negative comparison, Ektar 100 on the top and Provia 100 on the bottom. Kinda prefer the Ektar but that might be more because of the change of lighting between shots.

Beautiful shots, Andrew!

I like the lighting on the beach on the second one, but prefer the bluffs and water in the first one. I'm a little bit surprised that the Fuji didn't show more separation in the green tones, they usually excel at that. All in all I think the first one is a hair better than the second.

Cheers, if I had to guess I'd say it was just the lighting changing, there was small banks of heavy cloud passing the sun every few minutes so it was hard to judge when to take the shot.

matte paper

Definitely a photogenic understory in that part of the world--though I'm still waiting for an Eastern diamondback digesting a pocket gopher...he'd probably hold still enough for the LF treatment.:)

A question: as my mama said, de gustibus non est disputandum, but I'm curious if you prefer matte to glossy for these sorts of "busy" shots (or perhaps you just got a deal on those big sheets?)

Corran
16-Oct-2019, 06:27
I generally prefer matte (or semi-matte) papers. I just think they have more depth, and sometimes glossy looks chintzy. But on the flip-side, they can be very difficult to print on. Glossy seems more forgiving, especially in the shadows, which on matte needs to look a little thin out of the frame, even dry, to look just right on the wall.

I haven't thought too much about glossy vs. matte for certain subjects, though I could see an argument for, say, water or ice being a bit strange on matte, but everything has a bit of sheen once it's behind glass.

Another thing - my friend/mentor used to wax his matte prints. This is an old-school technique, and it looks amazing, giving the paper more of a semi-matte look. But it takes a looooong time and is quite a lot of work.

CreationBear
16-Oct-2019, 07:25
I just think they have more depth

Very interesting...thanks for elaborating.:) I guess it's probably a stretch to say a matte print is analogous to what the carbon print guys produce, but I could imagine a bit of texture couldn't hurt conveying this fractal, high-detail landscape.

Corran
16-Oct-2019, 07:51
I also like the ART 300 textured paper for some scenes, usually rock/sand/brick. I should try it with leaves...especially dead/fallen leaves with that crinkly texture.

A bit of a stretch -- carbon prints can have a wider variety of surfaces and looks than the array of silver gelatin papers of old...even with throwing in toning. When printed for raised relief and transferred to a glossy or smooth surface, one gets a glossy surface and even the relief is glossy. Quite different than any silver gelatin paper.

Wonderful image, Byran. I have always favored glossy papers (fiber only -- with Portriga Rapid 111 being primo!) However, getting into platinum printing, I have come to appreciate the matte look -- and learned how carefully one must treat the shadows.

Thanks Vaughn! I imagine I might like other glossy papers if they aren't as, well, glossy as Ilford's. I wish Ilford made the semi-matte paper in other emulsions outside of Warmtone. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Back into the trails in the woods. This one took a couple of tries to bring the highlights and deepest shadows into a printable range. It's in my theme of choices at the juncture of two trails. Sadly this is way underexposed. I actually made a photo that was probably perfect, but for the second time ever my Grafmatic jammed and ruined that shot. This was my second attempt - but I was impatient and didn't give it as much time. The first time I did a 45 minute exposure. This was only 15 minutes. Will have to try again.

Don, that's a very fine looking paper neg, the crisp rocks and blurry trees make a great contrast. I checked your Flickr page for some more detail and see that you developed it in a 1:19 solution, and for just 45 seconds. I'm intrigued - do you develop all your paper negs in this way? And do you pre-flash?

I actually like using ID-11, diluting the stock 1+1 for around 2 minutes but I find I need to mix the ID-11 and use right away and I find it hard to dissolve. My next tests will be with Rodinal at 1:100, 1:150 and 1:200 so see if I get better consistency. I find that I get a lot of “chemical clouding” especially in bright areas of the exposure when I develop with Ilford’s paper developer. The clouding is worse if I agitate at all.

I used to pre-flash, but some exposures I’d like to come out more contrasty so I don’t pre-flash any more. Instead, if the scene is high contrast, I use a Lee #12 filter and it tames the contrast great!

Try using hc110 or ilford equivalent
You will get more repeatable results

So a few quick questions -

could you have done the same with slide film (Velvia, Provia - am I correct that Kodak has no E6 film available on the market currently?!?), I'm thinking of the dynamic range in the scene and nice balance you achieved.

Were the colors like that in the scene, or have you tweaked them in post? They're beautiful, almost unreal. Maybe the light is like that there.

Thanks. I'm working on improving my own 4x5 work and am seeing some stunning images here, very inspiring!

Steven Ruttenberg
11-Nov-2019, 00:32
I don't think I could have achieved this scene with slide film. It was like a 15 min exposure accounting for reciprocity. Slide film is very unforgiving whereas Negative film, especially Portra are very forgiving and have gobs of range. The sun had set and it was getting dark quickly.

Your welcome. Small warning, flickr is still applying some sort of image processing when you upload so the image here is a bit over-saturated and sharpened. I don't get why they feel the need to do this. Same for my other color images, but the amount varies image to image.

Well Austin, nothing wrong with batting a thousand. I'd say it was a good day!

The show here just finished, and was well attended. A group of twenty photographers, only film capture, with diverse vision and process. I'm involved with some of the participating photographers in an effort to found a photography center here in Oakland. We are off to a good start, time will tell.

Thanks for the invite, it would be fun to get together. I'll keep it in mind.

It's been a while since I have offered images or comments here, but Steve, your images are proof why large format with the right film, lenses, exposure, processing and excellent personal skills outclass digital imaging by a mile; notwithstanding the former's severe limitations and the extreme MPs we are seeing with both Fuji and Hasselblad digital medium format.

Great landscape work with those Nikkor lenses (I still have several sitting on the shelf).

Looking forward to your future work.

Yes. I was driving and had to pull over grab the camera bag and tripod and frantically find something to put in the foreground.

I knew whatever I found would be silhouetted, but there was no time to grab ND filters and dial in focus, just make sure the silhouettes were sharp against the sky.

I made two exposures then just stood and watched the light gradually recede.

Best sunset I was ever lucky enough to photograph, for sure.

Here is the uncropped version. Not much in the sky and a little bit of work to expand crop. I may do that as the more I look at it, it seems a bit cramped on composition. Feels like it needs a bit of breathing room. And maybe a bit of right rotation to straighten out the horizon. Seems a bit high on the right side.

Lovely image!!

Years ago, I lived across the street from farmland and would be awaken sometimes by water shooters at 0400, especially when the temps dropped.
Always enjoyed watching the Zimmatics (similar to what you have photographed above) crawl across the landscape.

Thanks Steven. I see what you mean. What a weird sky; the color just disappears on the left side....reminds me of a couple of my shots where what's going on in the sky and on the ground just seem to be fighting each other for attention instead of working together.... In your case, the intense yellow seems (to me) to be fighting the low light in the canyon recesses.

I agree. After looking at it, I think it should be desaturated slightly to keep it from fighting for attention and instead become a supporting character.

Hi Steven,

this is a beautiful composition and view. I wonder though if there's a general lack of separation in the hills, especially the ones on the far side of the valley, but even the closer one with the tree in the foreground. It all seems a little bit muddy or indistinct in this specific shot. I don't see the same issue in the other photographs you've posted.

This recent image of the Canyon is very good. This is the sort of light I walked in along the rim while 'commuting' to work in 1977 (late snow in May). I walked during sunrise from the Bright Angel Lodge to just shy of Yavapai Point before heading away from the rim towards the park headquarters. You captured it very very well. You have allowed the light to create the scale and grandeur of the Canyon...with some help with composition, of course!

6x6TLL -- the lack of separation or muddiness you sense may be due to the scale of the 'valley'. That pointy mountain on the horizon is about 10 miles away.

I missed this exhibit (been away from Atlanta for quite a while down on the coast), but I like her landscape work. I have her Deep South book on my coffee table. Your photo does have that Sally Mann vibe. Good work

Thanks! I was lucky to see it. The first time I went, the show had been shut down unexpectedly that morning, but I got a chance to go a few weeks later. Then the show was completely closed earlier than expected. I think they were having roof leaks or something.

John,

Hope you don't mind a constructive comment and, perhaps, you know this already... Use of front tilt in scenes like this is problematic because the upper area of verticals (trees in this case) are generally rendered soft no matter what lens aperture is used. For scenes like this, I keep everything at zero and use aperture, choice of lens, and/or camera position to maximize DOF. If I can't get everything in sharp focus, I'll ensure my primary subject is sharp and let everything else fall where it may. Of course, this is just me and you're certainly free to shoot as you see fit. ;)

The more you shoot the more you learn. Consistency in getting out to photograph and perseverance in the process are honorable attributes. Some advice I would offer retrospectively from my experience. Make a cell phone image of the photograph you made for references you can see the tonalities insitu relative to your produced print. If you cell phone has a B&W conversion all the better if it is a B&W photograph. Take plenty of notes and only change one variable at a time as you make adjustments to your vision. Keeps things manageable and on a real learning curve. Change more than one variable and you may as well push a random number generator for meaningful results. Learn to read negatives (over and under exposed / over and under developed). Lastly just enjoy yourself in the field and be patient. Small successes tend to feed on themselves in a very positive way.
