Steven, you're doing nice work at the Grand Canyon, especially like this one.
Roger
Thank you. I will be back there end of June, July and August. South, North rims and Toroweep. For a week each time.

I usually hike with my Chamonix (3.5 or maybe even 4 pounds lighter) but lately I've been using my Linhof and I think I might need to reconsider if those 4 pounds is worth the frustration I've been having with my Cham lately. Maybe I've beat it to hell and it's starting to get worn-out, but I've been having focus creep problems, alignment issues, etc. I've probably pushed 1000 sheets of film through it...
Anyway, for this shot I was precariously perched on a medium-sized rock that could just barely fit my tripod. I had to dance around the camera, careful not to slip and fall in the creek, while I focused. Then I realized my lens board was centered because I had popped my 58mm on a different board recently so I had to switch my lens board with the 150mm I had so I didn't have vignetting, while also not dropping it all in the creek! :) I am stupid yes I know :).

Still, a damn good image!
Thanks Steven. I was lucky the sun played ball and briefly went behind a hazy cloud, giving me this nice light for about 30 seconds.

Lula Lake Falls and Rock Creek.
Ha, and a bit unlucky that all of the tourons decided to wear white that day...:) I'd definitely sneak back there with a second AD to tell everybody when to hunker...the blacks in the foreground are fantastic.
Thanks. Yeah so this place is only open 2 weekends a month during the warmer months and 1 weekend on the off-season, so it's pretty crowded. I talked to someone about getting in on an "off" day and apparently they allow that sometimes for special groups. I would love to have a "Large Format Photography Day" here with some of the N. GA LF group, and anyone else kinda sorta close, like you, so maybe I'll ask - in the fall would be awesome. Personally I would love camping here a couple nights if they allowed it.
It's one of the most unique waterfalls in GA, with such a sheer drop. This image gives a bit more context to the number of people around (http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/lulalake-3430s.jpg) early in the day. It got way worse fast. I waited till they were at least situated and not awkwardly climbing around on the rocks.

Very cool--you can tell that it's in that little patch of Cumberland Plateau there in Georgia...very much like the "amphitheaters" you find further north.
Otherwise, I hope you get the No' Georgia All-stars together soon. (FWIW, since another thread was discussing a noticeable "peen deficit" in terms of subject matter, maybe y'all can hack out some tasteful nudes too and kill two, ah, birds with one stone.:))
LOL
Yeah nah...
Recently I accidentally developed some color negative film as black and white. It was very dense and hard to use. I discovered last night that I could soak the negatives in Farmer's Reducer for a long time and that made the density come down to a more "normal" amount. I don't know what actually is going on here chemically but I salvaged this image and like the resultant tonality well enough.

This is one of three images I took on a 7-mile loop hike in Contra Costa county early last month. This one doesn't have any clouds but the other 2 do. All were shot on Kodak Tri-X 320 with a Toyo 45AX. I printed this image last night on Ilford warm-tone glossy RC and plan on reprinting it on various FB papers and trying various toners to see how much I can improve it. The contrast grade I chose for this printing was 2.75. A 10x loupe held to the print shows individual grass blades in focus throughout the print. A Rodenstock apo-sironar-s lens was used.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, as they say. Today I went out to shoot during a lull in the rain, but where I was planning to go was closed when I got there. So instead I went to one of my local places I go when I just want to shoot a frame or two and when I got out where I wanted to be, it started pouring rain. Luckily had the forethought to bring my umbrella. Then after that died down, the clouds went away and weren't interesting anymore. But then I looked around and happened upon this scene in the undergrowth. Beautiful pearls of light, the raindrops coalescing on the ferns. About 30 seconds after I made this image the sun came out and blasted the delicate light into oblivion (http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/zwernerlight6919.jpg).

raindrops coalescing on the ferns.
A mimosa sapling, I believe--though of course, a series on the invasive landscapes of Georgia would pretty much be a license to print money in these "woke" times.:)
Seriously, though: that's a shot I'm going to study...that (very!) wide angle/pano combination really seems to deepen the frame in a way I hadn't considered before. Maybe I need something shorter that 180 in my 4x5 kit after all...:))
Ah I see, yes I just kinda call that general leaf shape "ferns" but you're right. There was some flowering mimosas on the other side of the lake. I like the pink "flowers" on those. I didn't know they were invasive...yesterday I did see some kudzu taking over a massive area of land. That's the default when I think of "invasive!"
LOL I probably shoot less than 10% of my photographs on 4x5 with longer than a 150mm! Cropped a little on the sides, this would be like a 47mm XL with a 6x12 back. I was only a few inches from the leaves. This makes a very different "feel" to the image compared to a normal lens.
Ah I see, yes I just kinda call that general leaf shape "ferns" ...
I like the tones. When I think of landscapes, I think of grand, sweeping views with a horizon. But that's just me. :)
I like the tones. When I think of landscapes, I think of grand, sweeping views with a horizon. But that's just me. :)
Personal (instead of grand) landscapes...most of my landscapes do not have any sky. Nicely seen, Corran!
Thanks Vaughn. I get that tuco, though "grand sweeping views" are not so common here :). No one looks at the "Leaves" thread anyway ;).

Yes. It'd make a real nice cyanotype as well!
Thanks Steven. Good idea jp. Still haven't got my alt process station up and running. Too many bills and unexpected expenditures cropping up unfortunately :(.
I need to make a contact print first and see how the contrast is. I way over-developed it, but it still might not be enough contrast for alt process.

Excellent, Reinhold! The light off the road along with the atmospheric light does match your title well (or should that be the other way around?)
And I like the format. I have not split my 5x7 (using a modified darkslide is how I would go about it.) I do so with 8x10 and 11x14, which when split give similar proportions to the 6x17 if I got my math correct. Perhaps I will give 2.5x7 a go one of these days.

Tony,
Thanks for chipping in. I stand corrected with the speeling, for my English makes some Welsh name places sound the same....it is from above the shores of Llyn y Gader. I was staying for a week in Rhyd Ddu. I walked left towards the rail station, crossed the road, started on the path around Llyn y Gader that winds it's way to Beddgelert and then went uphill at some point. The big peak to the left is Y Garn (Nantlle ridge) and I am sure the distant hill is Mynydd Mawr. It overlooks Llyn Cwellyn. Lovely part of the world.

Graham, I stand corrected twice ,1] I had finger trouble with Natlle [the double ll is correct not ile] 2]I assumed the image was taken from the wild camp Llyn y Gader, but reading your last message it seemed it was taken a long way from there. Yes, looking towards Mynydd Mawr from circa Lyn Ogwen/Llyn Idwal area then certainly Y Garn is in the foreground with Mynydd Mawr in the distance.
By the way Welsh is a terrible language to learn as you get older. My knowledge of Welsh is extremely limited in spite of trying to learn it for six years. Our granddaughters are bilingually fluent in English and Welsh together with good knowledge of French. With English, they use Welsh pronunciation and syllable bias which gives an interesting and amusing lilt.

Thanks Steve. Yeah I was just reading someone's topic here recently about black suns. I've always been interested in the effect since reading about it in Ansel's books, but of course T-Max 100 doesn't do anything like that. I briefly thought maybe the Efke would do it but never really "tried" to make it happen. I'll have to load up some more and see if I can do it again purposely.
Thanks to the earlier comments.

I cropped a bit off the top and a fair amount from bottom. The lens showed it really needed a center spot filter in this image at f/4.5. I darkened the foreground as well, it wasn't that interesting.
Gotcha, just curious. Yes I'm sure the fall-off and performance suffered at f/4.5, but that hardly matters when you've got that main bolt that looks in-focus and sharp enough!

Thanks Bryan. I'm finding out too, that negatives that are really dense, even though they look good on the light table, really suck for scanning. I'm working on one now developed with Tmax dev at normal times, but I cooked the negative by about 3 stops over exposed. I mention because the lightening one was super thin in the foreground but I still got detail with little work. The current one is just the opposite.

Two Scenes from Yellow Branch Falls
You should have shot your sorority girls there.:)
Otherwise, I hope the first one prints for you if it's sharp--just the right amount of abstraction for my tastes.
Hey, thanks guys! You all probably know I don't normally shoot such long lenses, but seeing images of this waterfall online had me thinking the "shelves" would be interesting up close.
LOL, CB you should've seen the storm we had at Clemson Monday before shooting. Trees were ripped out of the ground on campus! What a day - I got soaked to the bone. Which from what I understand made the flow here much better than normal.
Anyway, unfortunately it's not the sharpest negative. I've been having a lot of problems with my Chamonix lately. I've schlepped this camera hundreds of miles, knocked it around my bags, gotten it wet, knocked my tripod over and whacked it, etc. - I think the back might be warping as I have a lot of focus issues, and a 300mm certainly makes things a bit more sketchy. I can probably make an okay 8x10 print. The focus is off left-to-right, even though I quadruple checked it and had the focus plane tweaked a bit to follow the "face" of the rocks.
I am really considering heavily modifying a Linhof Technika to bring the weight down as much as possible (and make wide-angles easier to use). I just got a second Master and so I could maybe mod my IV...
CreationBear
21-Aug-2019, 07:27
That's too bad--I thought it looked a little soft...do a Pt/Pd print and call it a Verito and nobody will have to know.:) At any rate, I couldn't help but noticing there's a Walker Titan SF for sale here on the LFF board: ABS don't warp!
Out of curiosity I looked, and the Walker appears to be the same weight as my Linhofs, so not a lot of benefit there.
Lots of great options out there though. I played with a Canham DLC2 at a trade show a few years ago, and talked with Mr. Canham himself - really liked that camera. Expensive, but understandably so.
I need to figure out what the issue is anyway on the Cham and fix it, so I can sell it at the very least, if I were to change cams. But I sure do like the weight of the Cham...

I have a DLC2, it's a superb camera. I should use it more than I do. Very well made. That said, with any camera that has movements, there's always the possibility for them to be off somewhat.

21-Aug-2019, 13:42
Good job.
Ed, I'd love to try a DLC2 in the field, before purchasing. See how it works when unpacking, in a rush to get a shot perhaps (happens often for me). Seems like I only ever see older DLC cameras for sale used, which seems to me means people like their DLC2 models...

Possibly. There's a bit of abstraction in the 300 shot, as if the strands of water were hair. More graphic, and definitely a unique perspective, at least that's what my eye tells me...

Agree Brandon. I'll have to make some prints and see what I can get, with the focus issue I mentioned above on the 300mm shot.

I've been having a lot of problems with my Chamonix lately.
I have solved most of sudden out of focus issues with a Cham by two things:
* Replacing the original nuts on the rear standard with wing-nuts from Home Depot. The original nuts are weak and wear out.
* Using a short piece of aluminum carpet trim (its length slightly exceeding camera bed width) squeezed between front and rear standards when I assemble the camera to shoot with 58-150mm lenses. That is to keep the standards precisely parallel to each other. Not needed for longer lens as with these lenses the front standard can be precisely aligned against the edge of the bed.
These are good suggestions for helping alignment. I need to do some tests to see if my film plane is out of place from the GG image, rather than an alignment issue.

I am in the early stage of making a set of small clamps to use on my Chamonix 45H-1 to keep the front and rear standards parallel. I find that the rear one especially can get a slight swing in it that you wouldn't notice unless you look for it. So for now, I have got in the habit of checking front and rear standards as part of my set up routine. I know your supposed to do this any ways, but since these are held by friction, it really needs to be done each time. The clamps will prevent this and will be used to zero out if swing is ever used. They will also allow shifting without any swing being introduced.
Keith, I definitely need to return in the fall/winter!
Steven, interesting that the H model is still problematic. I figured the refined design would be less prone to misalignment. I'm still slumming with the very first model (that I bought used back in like 2011).

Hi Steve,
Technical question - I had to wait until back at home to look at my scanning software! Scanned as linear raw 48bit RGB and converted to 16 bit grey later.

That works great. You will get the benefit of the 48bit rgb but output to grey. I usually keep it as 48bit rgb which gives me options in photoshop for the processing. I can pass it thru Nik SilverEfxpro if wanted or use many different options for the final black and white. But your method works great as well.

Here is a very neat comparison of same image, but one is digital IR and the other is Tmax100. Digital is 15mm lens at f/2.5, the 75mm on Tmax was at f/4.5. If you look closely you will see the film caught stuff digital did not and vice versa since I was using 720nm filter on a full spectrum sensor. Notice the IR picked up a bolt coming straight at us and thru camp where as the Tmax did not (since it wasn't sensitive to IR) This would be interesting to use IR film.

Nice idea about the IR film. Hope you weren't standing too close to a metal tripod.

Wow. May I ask what you used to scan this and where this was shot?
Cheers! It was shot at a place called Matapouri on the north island of New Zealand, I was just up there for the weekend. 'Scanned' with my Sony A7RII and a macro lens with a light table to illuminate the negative. Two photos merged together in Lightroom and a plugin called Negative Lab Pro to invert the negative into a positive image.
Also here's another from the same day, FP4+ with a 6-stop ND filter this time:

Very nice, but I'm still wanting you to hump that 5x7 back into the country a bit--I'm thinking the arc of the fallen tree upstream would rhyme with a bit more horizontal treatment. Don't ask me where you'll put the tripod, though--that rock face to the right and hard Vibram soles might have you wishing you'd been born with a prehensile tail.:)
Got the 5x7 out yesterday to test some lenses and will probably shoot more now as I have fixed it up a bit (lots of electrical tape on the bellows!). Check the soft focus landscape thread...something a bit different for me.

That first shot on the thread is a great scene--very nice tree presiding.:) I'll have to mull over the SF approach for this AO, though--certainly the f64 approach can provide an overwhelmingly busy result, but I suspect I might prefer to see that tamed in output (e.g. a carbon print) rather with the lens. Hope you find it a profitable journey, though.:)

Steven, I like the atmosphere there. The Superstitions are quite a mountain range. I drove around that area a few summers ago, on the Apache Trail. Absolutely no clouds that day and 110 degrees or something stupid so didn't shoot much of value. I have only visited AZ in the summer - I need to fix that.

Fine work, Daniel. I like Rock Bridge 3, in part because, except for the closest bottom foreground, the image does not have to so often forced appearance of such a wide-angle lens. It is a matter of taste, of course. But, as I near turning 68, I recall the sudden surge of the "wide angle look" and purposeful distortion that accompanied the tidal wave of psychedlics in the late '60s and on (which I thought was cool at the outset). The same look has become accepted as virtually normal now, with wider and better optics, in photojournalism, real estate offerings that turn cramped quarters into mansions, and, probably, on TV (wouldn't know). In any case, I enjoy your composition and tonality. Cleveland Falls is, I think, an especially nice counterpoint of moving and still, fluidity and solid angularity.

Very nice. Always impressed with how sharp your images are and the tonalities.
Thanks Steven. Tonality came out as I hoped - I waited about 15 minutes for the sun to not have a bright spot in the foreground, and burned the highlights down in the upper left/right. Also, while waiting we unfortunately saw a young kid (6 or 7) get absolutely wrecked by a yellow-jacket nest across the stream. Ouch!

I like the bottom two-thirds of the vertical very much. The sky reflected in the pool is enough sky for me and I can imagine the rest of the sea and the horizon easily enough without having to see it. But the middle image is my favorite of the three full images.
The images of Norway and Death Valley...thumbs up!

Not absolutely sure about the lens but Ithink it was a Symmar-S 150/5.6

Three shots on Provia 4x5, all of the same scene but slightly different angles and times of day. Which one is your favourite?

First one, (vertical), and the third one, (Horizontal with more tinted clouds)
I like the composition of the first one and the light of the third one.

The first one shows a lot of different things and a sense of height, I like that best.

Jon.oman, I find this landscape quietly exceptional. It takes a nice, leisurely time to expore and appreciate.

This is a thread I watch often for the photos and for the comments made. I finally took my Chamonix 45F2 for a ride to the Grand Canyon. I shot some FujiVelvia 50, Ektar 100, those are at the lab. I also shot some TriX320 and Ilford Delta 100. Here are few of shots of that beautiful place:

It’s tough not to be overwhelmed there. I like your first one, it’s non-standard view but there is no doubt where you are.

Agree, landscape wonder with little people!
heind61,
In the first shot I am already thinking of safety first ! You would not want to slip ...
Lovely shots all but my favourite is probably the third for the colours but followed closely by the first for the composition.

Safety first is correct. The problem with so many people visiting these places (at all times) is that as soon as you place the tripod with the camera you get surrounded by dozens of people trying to capture the masterpiece you are shooting. I had to select positions close to the edge with no room for others to get closer to me. The dancing shadows on the rock were a good subject for my cell phone.

I've started a new project deep in our local woods, looking at the trails with an old, but recently acquired Calumet wood field camera. This gives me a portable weight. I've fitted a Schneider 150mm lens to it and will concentrate on Rollei i.r. film. Exposures are 1-5 minutes. This is a scan of an Ilford print.
