Grand Canyon North. Not sure of view point. Lost my notes. Portra 160 4x5, Nikkor 7mm I think. Chamoniz 45H-1. As usual, the upload became a bit over saturated and even appears to have had some sharpening applied to it as well. It was more crispy than what the actual image is on my monitor :(. Gonna leave this one for a bit and come back to it before I finalize it.

So I just bought this film holder from a fellow LF photographer. It is shaped like an 8x10 holder but has a 4x10 film area instead. Works perfectly and makes it possible to use my 90mm XL on this panoramic format! I have read the 72mm XL also covers 4x10 barely so I will have to try that. For this kind of shot it works great, since it's impossible to use a half-darkslide solution due to the extreme bellows compression (unless wanting to force a 2-inch rise or fall, which may be interesting for architecture, but also has problems with 8x10 coverage). Anyway, I took this photo with my Widelux and knew it would be good to shoot with LF so shot it again today to test out the holder. Wish I could shoot it with 8x20 but I don't have a wide enough lens for this composition.

Nice, looking into getting into 4x10. Do you cut your film to size or buy it that way?

Corran
27-Jan-2019, 23:27
Steven, I literally just got this holder and this is the first shot I took. Included with the back was a mostly-full box of FP4+ 4x10 film. From what I can see, the 4x10 FP4+ is about 10% more expensive than buying 8x10 and cutting it, so IMO not worth it. Of course if you want to shoot color film...well I guess you better learn to cut down film.

Wehman UL 8x10 w/ Chamonix 4x10 holder.

Definitely something about 1:2.5 that's like Wallace Stevens' proverbial "jar in Tennessee.":) FWIW, that Wehman/Chamonix holder combo strikes me as about perfect if you're making contact prints in this part of the world.

Corran
28-Jan-2019, 15:09
Yes I am in love with 1:2.5. I am definitely moving more towards contact printing everything. 4x10 with a window mat to about 10 x 15 inches might look perfect for these.

8x10 enlarger is on the back-burner due to some design issues...but perhaps enlargements in the future too.

A few of us North GA LF Photographers met up today up in the Chattahoochee National Forest, at one of the most popular hiking spots. After we got done photographing some waterfalls, we said our goodbyes and headed home. While the others went south, I detoured north around the ridge to see the sunset, but was pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful wall of ice up near the top of the mountain that hadn't melted away despite being over 40 degrees all day (the sun didn't hit that side of the mountain). It was going fast though, with the drip-drip-drip of melting ice constantly echoing along the wall (in fact, a huge chunk broke off and crashed into the ground a few dozen feet away while I set this photograph up).

Anyway, here's the first shot I made. I like the forms and contrast against the dark rock wall.

One more from Jekyll Island. After reflecting I think this is my favorite of the day. Unusual for me, this was the second image of the day on this beach. Usually I hit my stride a few images in and make the keepers. But this was a little after 8am, and the sun was rising fast...later images have less beautiful light. As typical for south Georgia, the light is great for about an hour after sunrise and then it's pretty rough for the rest of the day.

Very Nice, I have something similar from Sunset Crater in AZ, but it is 35mm DSLR. Arizona is same way with light, about 1/2 prior to the sun to a few minutes after it pokes its head up above the horizon. From there it is like being in an Easy Bake Oven during the summer.

Thanks! Perhaps a bit of "grass is greener" syndrome, but I just love AZ in the summer! The heat, in my opinion, is no big deal - compared to south GA / FL heat + humidity. And with the lack of humidity, a polarizer really brings down the sky nicely in AZ, at least in my limited experience, whereas sometimes even a polarizer + R25 filter doesn't do much here. The sky is slightly burned in above. I only wish I had some big puffy clouds but that's uncommon in the winter, and unfortunately the airplanes from JAX to ATL always make contrails around this island. At least it's not a flat blank sky as is typical.

I love the heat too, lived here since 1974 except for my enlistments in the Marines and some traveling due to work. If your ever this way, look me up. I'm gonna be heading to the Grand Canyon again this month I think. And then try my hand at some places like White Pocket and 1 or 2 slot Canyons. 1 gets as narrow as like 3-6 foot I hear. Sky looks good, doesn't take away from the subject of the tree.

I'm liking the look of the Ektar shots I've seen so far. Would anyone like to comment on how it compares (positive/negative) to Velvia? I used Kodachrome for years until Kodak killed it in 120, and discovered Velvia 50 and moved to that (except for portraiture), and after spending almost 10 years doing B&W have lately started shooting Velvia 100. It isn't quite the same as the 50, but seems ok so far.

Steven Ruttenberg
13-Feb-2019, 07:57
I like Ektar, but it is also seems to have a "harder" look to it on colors compared to Portra 160. Portra provides a "soft" color palette that works really well with things like sunrise/sunset where there is a pastel type of coloring. I haven't compared it to Provia or Velvia yet, but typically the shots I have done with slide film seem to have a much "wetter" look and to be very saturated. With scenes like this and sunrise/sunset, even with grad nd filters, it would be hard to capture the full range of the scene. Not that it can't be done, I just haven't had enough practice with slide film.

I fail to see any difference between landscapes taken with Large Format equipment, and anything else. It's just a lot more work with the camera, and somewhat less in the darkroom.

It depends in how you use a LF camera.

First a LF shot may have optical 600Mpix equivalent, allowing for insane enlargements.

Second, Scheimflug is an integral resource in LF cameras, allowing for impressive things.

Of course one also may use a view camera like if it was an smartphone, and obtaining a similar result, but this is only a particular case.

I would also say that it affords you a much wider field of view for a given focal length over smaller formats which can translate into greater detail for said equivalent field of view. Ie 75mm on 4x5 is equivalent in terms of field of view to a 21mm on a 35mm format. By default you have better resolution giving greater detail and larger image size for print.

I plan to ask others in the NGLFP group if they'd like to camp on Jekyll sometime in the summer. Normally Jekyll has been an add-on activity and getting there in the afternoon/evening sucks (sun is on the left but the forested area makes everything shadowed). My wife and I were actually staying in Savannah and so we got up at 5:30am to get out here just after sunrise, which was amazing. I want to camp for a few days...blow a dozen sheets every morning or so. Plenty of subjects to shoot as you know!

I found some old digital images and actually a few shots from my first TLR, a Yashica 124G, I shot back in 2013. I can tell how much I've grown.

Thank you, Don!

I remember the day I took this photo, it was in the Spring of 1987 and it was the first and last time I ever went with another photographer with the intention of doing some shooting. I was using my Gowland Pocket View 4x5 that day with a Fujinon 150mm/5.6 lens, my film of choice at the time was Kodak HIE (infrared). I wish that I would have made an exposure or two with a regular pan film, if only to see how it would be different.

What I don't remember is why I didn't ever make a print of this in the darkroom, as I was printing most everyday back then. I didn't even scan it until 2012, more than fifteen years after I started digitizing my collection.

So, the only prints that I have made from this negative are digital but my approach in scanning, editing and printing digitally is heavily based on all of those hours I spent in the darkroom, I don't think that is any way that it couldn't be. I would go so far as to say that just about anyone who is producing high quality digital prints learned in the darkroom first.

Anyway, "rediscovering" this negative really was a gift, I consider it one of my all time best images.

Don Ciccone

Thanks for the info, I was wondering if you used infrared film. Personally, I don't think it matters whether the print is "digital" or analog, either way it's a really great photo.

Very nice what filter did you use. I tend to favor the orange.

I once had an argument with someone regarding the contrast range of the Pahreah area. I was photographing, and he was telling me I was wasting my time. he swore up and down that everything would look the same, and makes for muddy ugly BW photographs. He then got in his car and left.

Thanks you! I used to take a number of shots with different filters (but 8x10 Tmax was around $55 for a 25 sheet box back then) and found that a middle green did about what I wanted with the red rock; it moderately darkens the sky and darkens and separates the red and orange colors.

LOL yes I had a lot of struggle with that damn camera this past week CB. Oh and the image above has a light-leak for some reason that I fixed in the scan. Haven't had any issues with that in a while but of course it crops up on a good shot. Argh!

Back when I was really struggling to figure out what all was wrong with the camera and such I was legitimately close to simply having a bonfire and being done with it. I hope I can afford a better camera someday. And then I'll have the bonfire. Well or sell it on to someone else who wants to have the true experience of struggling with an ancient camera hacked from spare parts and held together with tape (literally).

I fail to see any difference between landscapes taken with Large Format equipment, and anything else. It's just a lot more work with the camera, and somewhat less in the darkroom.
Hi Bill, You would probably have to explain to me how to remove the inflection a small format camera and wide angle lens creates. Whereas with a large format camera it is simply removed by the rear standard.

Meekyman,

I really like the black &white image of An Tudair. I do recommend some consideration to cropping off the bottom up to the rock on the right. I believe it would give an increased sense of depth, and the eye would naturally travel from the right tree to the left one, and then up the valley in the distance.

I took this image a while ago but just developed it. I posted the b&w one previously, but I decided to shoot a sheet of color as well. However, I discovered my Linhof film holders didn't fit the Mercury 4x5 camera properly, so I just kinda held the holder up to the back and gave it a go. Worked well enough (a tiny light leak in the corner, easily fixed in PS). I need to shoot more color here, as the earthy tones in the fog and misty morning light were quite nice.

Very nice--I like the color version better...the olive drab of the palmettos reminds me of a movie still from "Platoon."

At any rate, a question about shooting color under canopy--what's the minimum average EV in the scene where you don't have to worry about crushing your shadows? Or is there a push/pull analog to the Zone system that you bring to darker scenes that keeps you out of the event horizon?

Corran
28-Mar-2019, 14:37
Shooting color negative, just make sure you give the shadows proper exposure and don't worry too much about the highlights (but if shooting something like sunset with a horizon line, I still think a graduated neutral density filter is essential, even for negative film). Slide film is another ball of wax entirely.

My photo here is a little underexposed for my liking, but it's not that far off.

Some folks like to really overexpose color neg film but I'm not into that. It's pretty flexible though.

And another image from further along where I've walked into the distant background to the left on the image previously posted. With such amazing colour all around, madness to make a black and white image but it suited the mood better to me.

Thanks Steven. I am trending towards softer colors and contrasts with color film lately.

This is a photo I've been meaning to shoot for a while. Amicalola Falls, GA's highest waterfall, can be viewed down at the parking area, especially before the trees get all their leaves back. The trailhead goes allllll the way up there, via a tough trail and lots of stairs. Anyway, I shot this image using my Wehman UL 8x10 and Nikkor-T 720mm f/16 lens, on T-Max 400 dev'd in DD-X 1:9:

I really like the top half of this image. And, I really like the bottom half of the image. But not both together. If that makes sense. The clean geometric lines of the top half compete too much with the chaotic abstract nature of the foreground IMO.

Hi Renaud

Where is it ?

The lack of sea walls between the beech and the houses looks unusual to my eyes - in the UK all sea front houses are protected by sea walls - as once in a while mother nature likes to demonstrate exactly who is in charge.

Thanks

A couple of new 8x10 images from me (only the third and fourth sheets exposed!) to compare and contrast.

Both at Wittenham Clumps, Oxfordshire (a location made famous by British 20th-century abstract landscape painter Paul Nash), exposed a few minutes apart. No filters used, flat light, so test exposures really for the new kit.

Chamonix 810V, Nikkor-SW 150/8 and Nikkor-W 300/5.6; Ilford FP4+/Pyrocat HD 2:2:100/BTZS tubes, worked on a little / toned in photoshop.

Loving how 8x10 really gets you thinking about the HOWS and WHYS not simply the WHATS.

'Life and art should have everything to do with each other... A photograph is the end product of someone caring about something "out there". The best photographs exude this caring attitude in a manner which is not definable but which is very evident... If nothing out there is utterly absorbing then a good photographer cannot exist. It's like trying to be a scuba diver in the midst of the Mohave desert...' (Bill Jay)

Interesting question:

The Pink one was scanned with Epson V850/Silverfast AiStudio8;

The second Blue one was done before I got the scanner in October, so was "scanned" with a four-frame stitch using Nikon D800E/85mm tilt-shift looking down on a Lightbox and aligned using Arca Cube/Novoflex focusing rack on my tripod.
In fact, I used 2 sets of 4-frame composites luminosity-merged to control dynamic range of slide on light box - a long-winded process... I have a note to scan it but have forgotten to do so. I'll plan to do that soon to compare results.

That's really interesting, thanks for the details.
I'm having a hard time scanning color negatives, especially when tones are subtle in the sky with Portra, but also when the dynamic range is very wide in Ektar. I've been dry scanning with a V800 so far but I'll test wet mounting soon, although I am curious to try a macro stitch using my Fujifilm XT2.
I'm curious to see your results. Keep us updated.

Have just scanned the slide; a reminder that to get the image to look right took quite a bit of work in photoshop. The previous versions posted look a bit oversharpened but are fine as originals.
Here's the new version: pretty similar, but a bit less time-consuming. The way I digitised with the Nikon pulled out more shadow detail in the rocks but I don't think the extra detail matters too much since the image is simplified a little without it.

What's your scanning technique with color negatives instead?

DaveF
10-May-2019, 08:43
Thing probably as intended, though I did add some saturation and work on targeted colour corrections in Silverfast to get it to start to work. For colour negs I now tend to use the NegaFix feature in Silverfast. Works pretty well inc with Ektar though a bit of work in curves with colour is still needed in photoshop to all the casts out. But don't expose much colour neg so haven't had that much experience.

Very desolate, like Stigeon (sp)

It is a small beach in Normandie (France), on the Channel coast near Mont St-Michel, I was fascinated by the variety of textures and layered tones of the rocks, an evident subject for monochrom photography.
On the second view, the walker silhouette increases the impression of gigantism given by the low and wide angle (150mm focal length), but in reality it is a bit less impressive. :-)

Thanks Steven. Good work on the GC image. I think that shows the strength of color neg over chromes. There's more foreground interest here than your other GC images IMO.

Here's an image I made on a short roadtrip this past week. This place is called Shaking Rock, and is located in Lexington, GA. This huge rock at one point could be moved with one hand as it was precariously placed on top of the granite outcropping. But at some point it finally succumbed to gravity and is no longer movable. I stop here every time I pass by, and this time finally had my 4x5.

Here's a recent photo from one of my hikes. This was early into a seven-hour trek, so I could still climb down to the lower part of the falls. If you've never used RPX 25, it's absolutely amazing. I tested it's dynamic range against TMax 100 and New 55 Atomic-X and it clocked both of them without trying in terms of the amount of image data in the shadows and highlights. I tested each at equivalent EVs, box rating. It may be my new favorite black and white film.
