The view from Cowrock Mountain on the Appalachian Trail, near Tesnatee Gap. This was quite a slog up from the base of the gap as it gains quite a lot of elevation through many switchbacks. My wife and I went out and she was not really prepared for this in terms of footwear so she sat and rested as I sprinted up the last quarter mile to grab a few shots of this overlook with a wonderful cloud sweeping past, illuminated by the setting sun. The large mountain in the distance is the somewhat famous Yonah Mountain near Helen, GA, which I plan to summit soon.

Excellent image, John!

Here's one I took on Mt. Baldy Rd. over the weekend. Forgot to compensate for the filter factor on this one, however, I ended up liking the exposure much more than the one I exposed "correctly".

Very nice! You might want to check out Ralph Steiner "In Pursuit of Clouds" book which has many cloud+hill photos. It was basically his retirement project.

Here's is one my photos from my last LF outing of winter subjects. Again at Birch Point Beach state park with the speed graphic and 9" Hyperion. FP4+ in pyrocat hdc.

I remember when I started shooting LF film and spending all that time setting up the camera, focusing, inserting film holder, firing the shutter and then after the *click* thinking... "is that it?"
I felt like there was a part missing
Well now i've got that bit filled in and nothing makes me want to punch holes in walls and people and keeps me more perpetually literally dirt poor than this process.
Also i hope you like cleaning because that seems to be about 95% of it. ☺

Silver Falls, Oregon, June 28, 2017. Photographed on 8X10 Ilford HP5+, one second at f45, processed in Rodinal 1:100 for one hour, minimal agitation. I don't typically like or use "stand" development for the fact that (especially with roll film) it introduces more problems than it solves. But in this case, it was useful: this sheet could have used another stop of exposure - the shadow areas were weak (I had another sheet, which got N processing in D76 and proved thin). I didn't want to do a standard N+1 development, since that would tend to send the water highlights sailing off into unprintability, so I decided to take a chance on stand processing. In this case it worked nicely.

I can appreciate that, and thanks for the honest appraisal. Sometimes I don't think my take on landscapes is unique at all, and I struggle to "find my voice" after more than a decade of not making "art" photographs. Perhaps you sense my unsettled nature?

Vaughn
15-Jul-2017, 09:45
Mostly I am fighting my own bias. With the last images you have shared, and going through some of your images on flicker, you have a consistent way of presenting your landscapes that is quite different than mine. I feel something is lacking, but I suspect that living with the prints, I would come to appreciate them. What I feel is lacking is 3-dimensionality. While compositionally I want to be led into your images, the light is too flat -- perhaps a better word would be too uniform since you have plenty of contrast.

At Smith Rocks, the river leads me forward but without any atmospheric distance, my eye falters at the foot of the mountains (I prefer the horizontal image of this scene with a little foreground to give me a visual launching point). The same happened with your image of the waterfall...beautiful image and my eye is of course, drawn to the waterfall, but I do not get the feel of the shape of the land around it. What I suspect is that my reaction would be different seeing the prints themselves...that your vision would shine through in its unique way.

Hi Paul and Vaughan!

I read your criticism on Pauls two pictures and I have to say I have similar feelings about them; like Vaughan said. To make it very clear, I like the pictures both and they show clearly that you are a very good photographer with excellent technical skills and a good eye for the subject. But in my eye both pictures lack for one thing that is important for excellent bw pictures and that is global contrast. Both pictures have excellent and very fine tuned local/micro contrast but they don't have (enough) global contrast. Both don't have a real white or black in it wherease (In my opinion) it is this aspect that matteres most in bw. The bottom line ofBW is the interaction between local and global contrast. I don't think that this is a problem that lies in the negatives but of the Scan and its inversion in postprocessing. I hope this doesn't offend you in any way and I hope you will show us more of your work in the future.

Best regards, Sebastian

I don't disagree with the criticisms voiced here, but to some degree its also personal style. Also, I drove 3 hours to make this photograph - the vertical view into the riverbed at Smith Rock - and lighting conditions were far from what I'd hoped, but I decided it was better to go home with ANY image rather than pack up the camera having made NO image. Sure, its not what I had hoped to get, but its better than nothing. There's a reason why most landscape photographers return to the same place again and again, after all! I would also like to mention that I acquired my 8X10 Deardorff only four months ago, and I am still learning how to use it properly, and how to SEE landscapes with this camera. Its a new experience for me, and although I am not having too much trouble technically, I find I am learning how to see almost as if for the first time. Part of my problem is that I want to capture the magnificence of local (and local-ish) landscapes, and I tend to make the assumption that the view is magnificent no matter what the conditions when in fact, luck and timing play a huge role in the outcome. I need to be more like Clyde Butcher, and return to these places again and again, to seek out the best lighting and conditions, to get better results. This new experience makes me feel like a bit of a novice, I will admit.

Perhaps this has a bit more global contrast for your tastes?
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4316/35920612076_76ceb0fd29_k.jpg

PS: this was the second of two sheets of 8X10 I exposed that afternoon, and the first I processed normally and I got a very marginal negative from it. So, I opted to employ a technique I am not often inclined to use: stand development in dilute Rodinal. In this case I let the negative sit in 1:100 Rodinal for 90 minutes with a minute of agitation at the outset, plus a couple lift-and-dunks at the 45 minute mark. Shadow and mid-tone densities were improved, but you can still tell this is at least 1/2 stop underexposed.

Great! That is why I hesitate to judge your work by my 'values'. You have a good eye and vision. Your have your own style and people respond well to your images. They work.

I was hoping to spend some time at Silver Falls this past spring...perhaps next winter!

One from there that did not quite work due to technical difficulties (underexposused, not good light) resulting in poor image quality -- I would like to re-take it (I have an 11x14 now!)

...and lighting conditions were far from what I'd hoped...

It's easy to make variations. Here's one with a little more texture.

It lacks the refinement and subtle glow of the original, but perhaps it has more of the "West Coast" look which some expect from monumental scenery.

Paul it is interesting in your photograph to see a part of a tree on the left swaying quite generously with a very localised zephyr. It is sooo difficult to be somewhere and have the movement of air across the whole photograph be still just for that small window of time!

Well done. I'm sure the other trees were about to follow and sway wildly.

I really like where the the shadows and highlights are originally. But taking it into the Adobe Camera Raw filter and using the clarity slider nicely (for my eyes) increases mid tone contrast.

Honestly, no real correction, I just wanted to drop the exposure a smidge longer (without stopping down too much further and compromising resolution to diffraction) and didn't have an appropriate ND handy, and the orange was fairly neutral for the scene.

A small story from Google translator =)
Sunset on Lake Ritsa, Abkhazia, May 2017.
Usually tourists take pictures of the lake from the viewing platform, it is on the left behind the turn (here it is not visible), the most experienced pass to Stalin's dacha on the right, it is not visible either. But there is a cool lookout point from the mountain, on foot to it somewhere an hour and a half. True, I had to hang with one hand on the roots over a 500 m cliff, and another cut a tree that interferes with the sight, with a knife. Yes, I'm sorry Greenpeace =)
This point is most likely dawn, the sunset passes exactly ahead of the mountains.

Yesterday I had an opportunity to shoot in one of my favorite spots on the river under cloudy conditions, and I used 8X10 inch Bergger Pancro400, with the Deardorff (and Schneider Symmar-S 240mm lens). This negative was processed in Rodinal 1:25 for 7 minutes (slight pull). I felt like I was having "a Clyde Butcher moment", standing chest deep (wearing waders) in the river with my Deardoff!

ah the beauty of milford sound and mitre peak.
I love the tones and the elements. I'm not such a fan of the format / framing in the format. I imagine the same photo as more of a panorama left and right though would please me ! especially more to the left, to bring in more of the fiord and then rest against the far slope.

mdm
24-Aug-2017, 10:44
Actually a squarer format works best for me in this place because it allows you to actually compose a picture, vs reproduce a million postcard views. I want a picture to locate me, I want to see spatial relationship, not the same stuff the chooks snap away at.

Rocks and trees at Birch Point Beach state park, September 2017. Preanniversary speed graphic with 7.25" Verito soft focus lens, 4x5 tmy2 tmax 400 film, pyrocat hdc.

Highly textured rock/trees and detailed lichen can be hard to photograph successfully with a soft focus lens. The eye's desire to understand texture fights with the softness which poorly presents fine texture. The softness depends here on the soft light yet strong shapes (masses of light and dark, the pictorialists would say) and the mid-size repetitive lichen shapes to a lesser extent. I've photographed this particular rock with a bunch of cameras, film, lenses, lighting, weather.. It's a challenge and interesting too.

Appalachian Trail - Creek and Bridge tunnel at Byron Reece Memorial Trail (aka Mountain Crossings). I first found this location when shooting with fellow LF'er Corran. I went back there last week after a rain storm hoping to catch the steam filled with water. I used a new-to-me 90mm Optar WA which looks a little soft in the corners and vignettes a bit if not centered perfectly (Small image circle), but it works for this image (IMO). Metering was iffy due to changing light from cloudy to overcast which led to me to under expose a bit and my fstop was between f22 and f32 rather than squarely on f22, but I managed to extend development enough to keep the important details. FP4@100 f22 6sec, Pyrocat HD 32mins minimal agitation. Scan of negative with slight toning effect added in lightroom.

I like the composition with the tree on right as an anchor, but having issues with the softness overall. Perhaps a bit more contrast would allow the eye settle. You have some interesting edge effects going on with the top of the tree and rock shapes.
Since you indicate you shoot here repeatedly, I wonder if changing focus from Left blurred to Right sharply focused would give an interesting soft gradient effect and allow the lichen to pop more on the right 2/3s of the image.

Where you stood was about a foot deeper than usual and rushing water. I had to perch on the rock that was behind you and the water was rushing on both sides of it. A bit left does give a better view of the tunnel.

I, too, noticed the haloing, but did not want to be overly critical of an otherwise beautiful image. Since others questioned the phenomenon, here's my 2 cents...

Looks like the image may have been processed in Photoshop. This type of halo is very characteristic when, for example, the selection of the sky apart from the mountain top/trees is not accurately refined. This often shows up in highly detailed areas. Note how the halo floats right above and follows the tree line.

There are tools and techniques to easily remedy this issue.

If I'm wrong about post processing in PS, it's a mystery to me.
Perhaps Shailendra will comment when he logs in again.

Hi,

First of thanks to all for the comments and feedback on the image.

With regards to the halo effect on the top left, it is indeed shoddy Photoshop work on my part - I am by no means a Photoshop expert unfortunately. In my feeble attempt to adjust the image, the halo effect was created and I had completely overlooked it.

The image itself was taken in Oct/Nov two years ago and frankly I had totally overlooked in favor of some other images I took during that day. Having revisited it, I realized its potential, albeit at the expense of some poor editing work :)

I attributed it to imprecise dodging and burning, but then wondered if it was just the clouds.

Hi Radius Unsharp masking in Photoshop would create this,

Also never sharpen on the colour layers,, go to luminosity or better yet go into LAB and sharpen on the L channel.

I don't know if this one is about the waterfall or the trees or the water, so I'll just post it here. Luckily my wife can still muster the patience to let me bring along the 4x5 every now and again while on vacation.

Thank you. I believe it was a 150mm (Fujinon in my case) on Fomapan 100 in R09.

A strange picture of a historic packhorse swingbridge near Milford Sound, made on 4x5 Shanghai GP3 in D23. I need to try again with Whole Plate FP4+ and Pyrocat, but I wonder if I might prefer this, the dodgy version.

Thank you. It's starting to grow on me too. It does exactly what I wanted, it's a good representation of a nice afternoon spent wandering around the forest, looking at a series of waterfalls (only the long exposure made the people disappear ofcourse, it was quite busy.)

Found this tree near a trail I was hiking. I see fungus growing on trees often but this one also had a big batch of unknown mushrooms at the bottom (they stunk to high heaven too). Tried to arrange a nice composition here with it all as the light hit the tree from the back/side.

Spring is in the air so thought i'd share this spring time photo i took last year. If i recall correctly it was taken on Ilford Delta 100 4x5 using my 210mm lens. Not sure if i used a yellow or light red filter. Definitely used a grad of some description. It was early evening and the fields were just glowing.
