Questions- How do you like the 75mm Grandagon? Do you consider it too wide or just right? Do you use a recessed lensboard with it? I was thinking about pairing one with a 4x5 folder. I had a 90mm Super Angulon on a Crown Graphic, but sold it. I like the wide view. Love the depth and drama in the clouds. Thanks, Bob (Sorry, this is in reference to David Hedley's image of Rio Negro, Manaus.)

Hello Roberto - I have lenses on either side of the 75mm (58mm & 90mm), but almost always use the 75mm. It's my favourite lense by far, and fits in my backpack alongside a 180mm & 300mm. I use it on a a Sinar monorail with bag bellows, so I don't need a recessed lenseboard; I always found these tricky to use when I used a folding field camera, and was one of the reasons why I decided to use a Sinar.

Thanks Toyo.
I've been going through some older negatives and revisiting some that I had filed away because they had been damaged. I've cropped away most of the damage from the top and bottom to salvage this one, but still need to return to this location, perhaps later this year, to do a better job in handling the intensity of the light.

I like this second one. There's enough acuity in the tree branches to see that it's in focus, while the softness creates an ethereal quality.

I like this second one. There's enough acuity in the tree branches to see that it's in focus, while the softness creates an ethereal quality.
Thanks. The blending of sharpness and softness is what makes the soft focus different than pinhole for example. This is about the ethereal quality and shapes and tones. Sharp landscapes need shapes and tones too.

I might have agreed with that as a general statement absent an example to discuss, but I really like that second one. Soft focus for some landscapes lends a "dreamscape" kind of quality that I find very appealing for some images.

Jason,
I arrived late to the party but wanted to give my thoughts.
I used to believe landscapes should be sharp thru-out. Most of my own work fits that model.
However, over the years, my view has changed particularly when an image has a point of focus & subject along with with other elements that lend themselves to sharp/soft technique as with your type of lens.
I think all three of your images are very pleasing and excellent examples of what can be done very successfully with soft focus and careful composition.
I have not used lenses similar to yours, but I'm assuming you very carefully chose those areas that would be sharper vs softer. I think you did a great job in making several very interesting images.

My first ever attempt with astrophotography. Because I´m a bit crazy I tried it on LF film. The camera was settled on a very large semi-professional observatory telescope. First image out of my new Intrepid 4x5 Mk II.
Looking down on the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia....
Very nicely seen! Normally one does not place the horizon across the center, but it works so well here. Probably because Oz has so much sky. I appreciate how you have rendered the sky -- it does not over-power the landscape and gives a great sense of distance. But perhaps I like it the most because as I get older, I appreciate just sitting and staring out into the type of distance you have given us here.

I agree with Renato, the first one is my preference.
I enjoy the water texture, and the enclosed feeling. The second one seems torn /ambivalent between foreground and the waterfall. I Imagine the image you were thinking of with the second one is just a little farther down and left =)

Nice Bryan, Is it me or does the moon tend to look better on film? More likely other's are just better at capturing it =)
I think it's easy to blow out the highlights in the moon on digital, depending on time of day and situation, whereas on film you can retain it a bit better, usually. Thanks!

Not quite what I wanted in the water swirls, but my ND filter was a bit too strong. I don't usually carry more than one but perhaps I should bring a 3-stop as well as my 6-stop.

Thanks guys, perhaps I was too worried about the definition in the swirl. I did do some local contrast adjustments in Photoshop for this so not sure I could print it in the darkroom with my current skills, but I will try (split-grade printing the water might be what I need to do). It's on my list to print, my darkroom build is taking a bit longer than expected but should be doing final work next week....

I also live in Finland and I haven't found a need for that, atleast for B&W work it hasn't affected my exposure accuracy to ever notice the effect of the cold on the shutter.

Two images from December and from within 4 miles of my home! I rarely photograph in the area I live - whether it's due to motivation/mindset (always other things to do, not "me time") or that the area lacks contours and being in the east of the UK has very settled (i.e boring) weather and light, not sure. Anyway, we had some lovely cold, frosty/misty mornings over the Christmas holidays and just got round to scanning these.

Renato,
The standard solution for that is to right-click on the image, then select "view image" from the list.
That should scale the image to the height of your screen.
It works with all modern operating systems that I know of.

Thanks Randy! I not totally sold on it. I broke the "rule" about centered horizons and I wasn't sure there was much visual interest beyond the dark clouds (burned in heavily to look as it did then and as I pre-visualized for print). My first time posting so this is a kind of a test to see if I know what I'm doing. I shoot mostly landscapes, and this image (which I hope you will be able to see) was shot with my Shen Hao 4X5, 150mm lens, Fomapan 200 (ei. 100) developed in Pyrocat MC. Now lets see if this works... https://500px.com/photo/206439541/mosquito-pool-by-w-dodson?ctx_page=1&from=user&user_id=21794281
Alright, let me try this again.https://500px.com/photo/206439541/mosquito-pool-by-w-dodson?ctx_page=1&from=user&user_id=21794281
OK, clearly I don't know what I'm doing, at least with regard to retrieving files from a third party server (500px in this case). Maybe I can upload the photo to the forum.163478
Looks beautiful to me, Wayne. One click on the image opens it, another click on it opens it in a new window with great quality at about 5.5" x7.5" on my screen. (Foxfire, mac)
I like the foreground grass highlights...helps to create another layer of depth.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm beginning to really like Fomapan 200. I'll try to post some more images if I can figure out how to do it.

Thank you Chassis and David! The transparency is indeed beautiful with many small details (spider webs, flowers, leaves etc.) that don't show well on a computer screen. There is loads of tiny life that's captured throughout this one.

The North Carolina Outer Banks is pretty unique in that you have the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Pamlico Sound on the other. That gives you excellent sunrise and sunset options and these two locations are no more than a 10 minute drive from each other.

Bryan, the black and white works much better for me. I find that the waterfall in the color version is slightly distracting along with the small ripples in the water. I am sure this will make an excellent print!

I would like to add that if you shoot transparency film, and as long as exposure is good or on the under-exposed side, it is very easy to make B&W internegatives in the darkroom, in case you did not or don't want to take and in-cam version.
Thanks Pali for your thoughts! BetterSense, that's an interesting idea I had not thought of. Might be useful in the future if needed.

Thank you friends, it's very pleasant to read such comments. Unfortunately I do not have a lens that is wider than 90 mm, and there was no way to move back. I have the same frame on the chrome V50. And there was still a frame on Mamiya 7 with 43 mm.
I will continue to upload photos.

A wider lens for this shot would have merely included unnecessary detail to distract from the beauty of the waterfall. Even the rocks in the foreground do this.

Yes, I understand what you said. Unfortunately the place is very touristy, when you get there you lose the desire to look for the perfect composition. I was lucky to have 4-5 minutes when groups of tourists were replaced and there were a couple of people nearby. When there are Irritating factors during photographing, it is very difficult to concentrate on the ideal frame construction. I want to shoot a scene and walk away.
I apologize for my English, I hope you, as a large-format photographer, understand me=)

Looks great Pali; the LF look with the simple scene is a good combination.

I really like the 3-D like depth with the waterfall back in the cleft and the boulders out front in the foreground.
The view from Cowrock Mountain on the Appalachian Trail, near Tesnatee Gap. This was quite a slog up from the base of the gap as it gains quite a lot of elevation through many switchbacks. My wife and I went out and she was not really prepared for this in terms of footwear so she sat and rested as I sprinted up the last quarter mile to grab a few shots of this overlook with a wonderful cloud sweeping past, illuminated by the setting sun. The large mountain in the distance is the somewhat famous Yonah Mountain near Helen, GA, which I plan to summit soon.
