David, that's fantastic. This is a perfect example of how lens fall-off can work with an image to bring the eyes straight to a focal point such as the central tree in this photo. The natural lighting didn't hurt either. It looks like you also dodged that tree and maybe burned the edges a bit?

Hello again and thanks, Old-N-Feeble and Stone. I only used an orange filter (my default); in retrospect I should also have used the ND grad, but I'd probably have had some vignetting with two stacked filters on a 75mm lense. I haven't actually done any dodging and burning - the near water was fast-moving, deep and dark, and I've cropped the bottom inch to get a better tonal gradation and balance in the image. It would have been better to have pulled the exposure by 2/3 to 1 stop, because the light was much more intense than I realised at the time.

David, you didn't dodge that center tree at all?

David Hedley
23-May-2015, 22:16
Hi - no, I didn't dodge the tree - the foliage is naturally lighter, and probably also benefits from the sunlight that is breaking through the clouds.

Original Velvia? Or Velvia50 or Velvia100? Or Velvia100f?

I only ask because the colors seem more subdued than I'm used to with Velvia50 and looks more like Provia100f in tone.

It's really an excellent use of movements too, love the choices here.

Thanks. I didn't have a graduated ND filter at hand when I was exposing the image, but I used N-1 exposure and development for compression. It was a bit difficult to adjust the curves during the scanning phase, but I kept an eye to not crop the ends, and the histogram was right in the middle of the scale. I had to tweak both the bright and dark areas of the histogram (the curve and parameters used during the scan were nowhere close to what Epson Scan software though they should be). Then I adjusted curves separately for the sky and for the ground. And no, I don't think it is overexposed at all. I do see quite a lot of details both on the negative and in the scanned image (I have yet to produce a print, though)... might be a different monitor calibration...

There are loads of outstanding and inspiring shots in this thread! Has certainly made me look forward to shooting some colour film too. At the moment I'm just using Fomapan 100 until I get more used to what my camera can do, movements, etc. but here are a couple of mine - shot on my Calumet with a Fujinon 150mm f/5.6:

13 minute exposure with a 10 stop filter, f/32 semi stand developed in Rodinal for 40 minutes.

Some from Isle of Arran, Scotland, May 2015. Arran is a small island (25 x 10 miles) in the Firth of Clyde often called "Scotland in Minature" as the southern part is rolling pasture and the northern part is mountainous. The reason is that the "great fault" which separates the real Highlands from the real Lowlands runs diagonally across Arran. As a consequence there's some great geological features on the island and it's a fantastic place to visit. Anyway, some images - all with Chamonix 045N-2, black and white with Ilford Delta 100 and colour with Portra 160.

...Dorrigo Plateau, NSW, Australia...

Looking good and it looks somewhat familiar! My ex-wife is from the Comboyne Plateau, NSW, and there is a similarity.

Panoramas are interesting -- one needs to be spot-on, or go for the other extreme and not worry too much about it! Too bad one cannot link up the sky the same way with horizontals.

Graham,

First pic is great, very detailed at the stone texture, and at the same time very rich grey tones at the background. Like that.
The last, other view, color, but very nice also, rich blues, good texture at the water splashed stones, the rain coming, amazing.

Cheers,

Renato

Two views either side of Loch Maree, Wester Ross, Scotland. This is quite a wild place and I've spent three weeks there in the last three or so years and would happily return at the drop of a hat! Both taken in Autumn 2013 and only just got round to "processing" electronically - yeh yeh, took me some time to understand scanning and decide on how best to invert a negative (at least for me).

View along Loch Maree from the northern shore. The snow dusted mountain on the right is called Slioch.

View along a river from the "Heights of Kinlochewe" where I was faced with sun, rain and a snow-dusted mountain, Beinn Eighe. This mountain is on the opposite side of Loch Maree to Slioch.

Fuji Acros metered at ISO 80. I set my aperture to f22 and used a polarizer and 3-stop ND filter to get my shutter speed down to 1/2 second. It was a very high contrast scene, so I developed for 4 minutes in BTZS tubes, Ilford DDX 1:6.

Thank you, Johnathon. And while I was shooting this one, I was very unsure whether it would work... the light was not any special, there was just not "the one single interesting object" to focus on... that's the reason I exposed it on half-plate sheet - I mostly reserve half-plate sheets for those trial shots, as they are (just very slightly) cheaper than 13x18cm/5x7" - but it turned out well, even without special postprocesing... It's a revisit of a place I have shot several times in the past: Country road (http://www.vasina.net/?p=191), Autumn field (http://www.vasina.net/?p=6211) and Autumn field once again (http://www.vasina.net/?p=6298)...

This is beautiful and very interesting; the scale is quite deceiving! The scrub brush/bushes in the foreground give way to undoubtedly large geological forms, but the intermediate gradation to this scale seems to be missing, making these mountains seem very close and small but huge at the same time, if that makes sense. And on x-ray film no less! Bravo on all the shots!

I went on a bike ride in the mountains yesterday and had my camera along for the ride. It JUST fits in my hard panniers with all the other gear. The weather was turning pretty bad with a supercell starting to form right above me, so I found a spot on the edge of a cliff and set up my camera for a shot.

I was using some old T-Max 400 (tmy2) I bought off ebay and this was my first time using Pyrocat MC with it, so the negatives were pretty thick (14 minutes with 5 inversions every 4 minutes), so I need to drop the time down some.

Shot on my Zone VI 4x5 with a Fujinon W 125mm F5.6 lens and using a 2 stop graduated ND filter. Shot on some pretty fogged TMax 400 and developed in Pyrocat MC for 14 minutes.

Thank you.

It is a bit stupid story: after I shot this frame I was walking with camera and noticed that lens was not stopped down, so I assumed that I overexposed this sheet by 2 2/3 stops. Decided to try to save it, by pulling at least 1 stop... Now I'm looking and I actually don't know if I didn't stop down lens, or I did. Or I calculated exposure completely wrong. Or I pulled more than 1 stop :) Anyway it worked out nicely in the end. Some kind of magic or may be simply luck. :)

Another thing is that I think Velvia 100 has to much of contrast, so I have an idea/plan to try it as ISO 50 + pull, may be I will like it more this way.

Sheesh, these are beautiful!

What format was this shot on? Lens?

There almost seems to be a softness about it, yet it seems to be a larger format than 4x5 but that could be the lens that's why I'm asking.

Welcome to the LFPF.
Exquisite Image... I like!!! :)

Your 'humble' choice of lens, shows us that it is 'Not' the lens...
But rather, it is the person behind the camera -- Which truly counts!

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Just got done scanning this one in. Shot two weeks ago at a local reservoir, the Horsetooth. Its a great place to go boating, or just riding.

Taken with a Zone VI 4x5 and Ektar 203mm F7.7 lens. Shot on Foma 200 and developed in Pyrocat MC for 8.5 minutes.

Strong metaphor in the clearing storm image, intentional or not. Having knowledge of the transcontinental railroad and it's impact on America's growth, I see the left side of the image as the on coming development (newer building, power line) and the right side as what will be replaced (decayed building). Nice story in that image, and technically executed! It must have been that tripod, LOL!

Thank you Paul!! Yeah there were some interesting things going on in this scene...

The tripod is a Gitzo 504 Tele Studex Giant. It weighs about 20lbs with a Manfrotto 405 head. Very stable even in winds, and locks down tight. It is built like a Panzer and has a center column.

I'm more concerned about being on that folding ladder... :p

I took this on a recent trip out to Yellowstone National Park in June. I had planned a different morning shot, but the lake I wanted to photograph was still partially frozen over and the image I wanted was not there. Drove down a few miles to set up on Beartooth Lake. I was astounded at its stillness, not something that happens up here very often, at least not for me. My only complaint about the morning was the lack of any clouds in the sky. So I composed the image as you see here. I wish I had used a graduated density filter (reversed) on the bottom reflection but I am still pleased with the result. Taken with my Ebony 8x10 on Velvia 50.

Jim - This is a breathtaking image. Really love the purples popping out on green and the reflection is as perfect as it gets. The image is very balances (to me atleast) and I think you may have actually been better that there were no clouds to add potential noise to the composition.

Yes that little lens does a fine job for what it is... it also has heavy cleaning marks and some fungus (which has been cleaned, but left etching) and it still has great flare control, fine contrast, excellent sharpness... I keep telling myself I "need" a better 90, but honestly that little guy hasn't let me down yet. Perhaps I should postpone buying new glass until I learn to do my job properly and start realizing the limitations of the Raptar.

Nevertheless, here is my second image from my trip. This one is in Hayden Valley during an extremely foggy morning. Made with my Ebony 8x10 with my Kowa-Graphic 210 on Provia. This is one of several I took as the fog rolled in and out of the scene.

This is nice Jim.

Jim - I am fan already. Please keep these coming - really really amazing work!

BTW, I totally feel your struggle with the scan. Though my slides are no where as beautiful as yours, I could never feel happy with my Epson v700 scans. I bought a calibration slide which made a huge different but I later bought a drum scanner and the difference in is unbelievable. If you haven't yet, you should get yours drum scanned especially these last two that you posted here.

I like the image, although I am seeing a strong blue color cast. Do you have any calibration targets in the films you use? That can help a lot.

I've just returned from a trip to some less travelled parts of the Sierra Nevada. Nothing too Wagnerian, but there were good times and some terrific alpenglow. This particular shot was of an unnamed minor peak above Pica Lake in Inyo National Forest. I had only FP4 with me, so I grabbed the reddest filter in the bag to try to capture some of the evening glow.

Another from about the same location as the last. Duk (sic?) Lake and Pica Lake are right next to each other, about 1/2 mile hike apart, and both about 400 ft. below Duk pass. It was a windy and rainy site, but rain and wind died down overnight to make a nice mirror out of Duk Lake in the early morning.

Excelent work!!!! Only one question: how did you scan it? And did you use any filters?

mijosc
12-Jul-2015, 12:11
I used a #25 Red filter and possibly a polarizer too.

I scanned in Viewscan to a raw file and inverted in Photoshop via the Colorperfect plugin. It was quite a hazy day, and I made generous use of the new ACR dehaze tool to get a more contrast in the mountains. Also a fair bit of dodge and burn to get an image I like. Overall I like it, but I may work at it a bit more to get a result that's a bit less "harsh".

Took this over the weekend while driving around for inspiration. Saw this from a distance and knew right away that I wanted to try to make a photo here. However, I was not dressed appropriately for walking in this field. So a 100 bug bites and scratches later, I made two exposures at this scene one in B&W and another on Velvia 50. I scanned the original @ 2000 DPI and there is unbelievable detail including several grass hoppers, bees, and ducks in the scene.

Hey There! Unbelievable ggod fotos here in the moment. I love the B+W work from mijosc! Its amazing. I´m back from a 3,5 weeks trip to England, Scotland and Ireland. We were on our way with a camper. Unfortunately the weather was quite bad. There were only 3 days in all this time that were without rain. All that was quite a challenge form my ttwo little kids, my wife and me. And in terms of fotography it was a challange too. Always a compromise between familiy and taking photos with a LF-camera. I had to get up very early many times, also I was late into bed quite every day to try to fetch the best lite.

The pictures are not in a chronological order, I will show what I have developed and scanned. So it starts with some B+W. All others will follow if I get them back from developing.

All pictures taken with a Chamonix 045n2 and 75, 150 and 210mm lenses. All B+W is shot on Tmax 100 and developed in Tmax dev. with times between 5min and 6:20min.

First station of our journey was Bamburgh in the North-East of England:
