Beautiful - the striations in the cliffs, and the difference between the left and the right cliffs, is striking.

The Fujinon 105 / 5.6 looks like an interesting lense - what's it like to work with?

Thank you. I'm not experienced LF photographer yet. The only observation I can share with you is that the lens seems to be the best at f/32 and there is small vignetting easy to correct in Lightroom.
It is very small, lightweight and I can close my Graflex with lens attached. However, I can't do any movement due to Graflex design. I did test the shutter for accuracy, and it is within +/- 0.2 EV margin of error.
I own only 3 lenses (105/5.6; 150/5.6 and 240/9), and I use 105 as frequently as 150 lens.

I'm very new to the LF side of Photography. I have a bit of dust spots to deal with but for the most part I'm happy with it. Anyway photo taken in the Rio Grande gorge outside Taos NM right before Thanksgiving. Taken with a Chamonix 045N2 using a Nikkor SW 90mm f4.5, Fuji Velvia 100. Probably around f11 or 16. I know I should be writing down that stuff but it was too dang cold out.

Tower of Babel - Garden of the Gods

I shot this yesterday morning at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO.

This represents two firsts for me, one being I used Pyrocat MC for the first time (I think I'm going to REALLY like it!) and second, I used rotary processing with a Jobo tank and a motor base. As for the rotory processing, I seem to be getting some problems at the edges of the film where they are next to the reel. I'm not sure if I'll keep using it, or go back to trays.

Just got my first slide film exposures back. This was my first time shooting color slides, so I was pretty excited to get them back from the processing lab. I had a hard time getting the scanner to get all the detail out of them though. I finally found some settings that get most of the information out of the shadows.

The color and definition limits of the web really don't compare with what I see on the light table with these, but I am somewhat happy with how they turned out.

Here's one, taken with a Zone VI 4x5 camera, Fujinon W 125mm F5.6 lens on Velvia 100 film

I love E100G in medium format. But I'm starting to love CDUII more in LF.

Just amazing!!!!

You blow me away! But I like your E100G more than your CDUII work, but it sure is cheap! So perfecting it is a good plan :)

Thanks! Maybe it is a place. E100G is in my opinion very truthful regarding to color. CDUII not so much, but it adds something special, and I like it. Maybe I need to forget how the place looked like.

Steve, I have a small stash of that film, Adox CHS 25. I don't keep track, but I think it's somewhere between 3 and 5 years since I bought it, and I have not checked it's availability lately. But I will have to, since I have only ~15-20 sheets in 5×8 and a single 5×7 box left...

You won't find the good old adox 25 anywhere now. Lumiere shop in Germany had recently a 25 ISO film from wephota I think but I am not sure of the provenance - formerly wephota 25 was I think made by Filmotec but my last info was that they do not make sheet film any more.. I've no idea about what the film is like... Anyone tried it?

I'd prefer the first one, even though the second one is a great image as well. I feel that in the first one, the top and bottom balance out quite nicely and at the same time give some depth to the image. It's a matter of taste though.

I have shot quite a few sheets of Wephota 25 (you can have a look at the images here http://www.vasina.net/?tag=wephota-np-15 , filtered by tag), but that is also old stock, bought 5-8 years ago. I have not ordered any Wephota film in the past 3 years, so if they changed anything (manufacturing plant, supplier,...) my experience would not be valid anymore. I have found the film to be perfectly usable, low grain, good tonality (but the images don't "shine" the way they do on Adox or Fomapan), good reciprocity (better than Fomapan 100 - actually it's faster to expose a sheet of Wephota 25 than Fomapan 100 when speaking about exposure of 60 seconds or more (pre-correction time)). I have not seen any emulsion defects or scratches, pinholes or anything alike.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. It's funny because looking at the picture yesterday, I told my wife to please remind me to go for a more simple composition when I'm shooting. I actually like yours better, and it is probably close to what I would have gone for if I had plugged my brain, or if I had taken a little more time to think.

Andrew,

Have a view of a slide this size in a light table is a pleasure which nearby pays the work for itself, isn't it? I suppose you're suffering doing only black & white photos on film 'cause I know already how strong you can be in the color dept. But in a manner which I can't explain very well I feel that B&W pays back the "lack of color", improving our skills as photographers, in this sense: after some months doing only color, if I convert the image to B&W the images seems to vanish, loosing something, perspective, composition strength. But with some months making b&w mostly, every color image I I casually convert to b&w is strong in composition terms, revealing even unaware perspectives not easily perceived before.

Jazz,
Terrific shot, these greens are some sort of which I never saw before, very mythical for a foreign like me, looking to the browns and greens of the brazilian prairies and forests,

Best,

Renato

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Stone, here are the answer your questions. As to why the Nikkor over the Fuji, I actually have the Fuji 450 also, but got the Nikkor 450M at such a nice price, I decided to keep the Fuji in my 4x5/5x7 pack. The Nikkor being an F9 is just slightly brighter on the ground glass although it probably is hard to tell the difference. As to the Nikkor 150, it simply was the lens I in that focal length that I could afford. Got it for about $500, that is the reason. That being said, it is one sharp lens and I am trying to use it more although I am not that adept at using wide angles, and by that I mean it is not my usual way of seeing although I am trying to see "wide" in more of my shooting. The first image was on Provia, the second on Astia, and the third on Velvia 50. Jim

Thanks Jim!

Totally makes sense, I would have done all of the same things except the Nikkor 150 the ONLY reason I DIDN'T go with that lens was the rear element wasn't small enough for the Technika boards I use, AND it didn't take 77mm filters which the 150 SS XL did, but it would have been nice to save so much money! Damn good price.

Thanks again!

Here are a couple more from Utah. Both images on 8x10 Provia 100F and both with the Fuji 300. I find photographing scenes like the first one a bit of a love/hate thing. I almost did not take the shot because I did not like the snow on "half" of the scene, but I have come to grips with it. Would love to to a scene like this with fresh snow. Timing would be everything.

The fact that the ground is predominately red, makes the snow a non-issue for me. I certainly understand the concern over balance, but the color has plenty of weight to balance out the brighter luminosity of the snow. The uncovered slope in the LRC also balances the heavier pink portion of the sky on the left hand side of the image to my eye. The line created by the covered/uncovered transition also serves to add some pull/depth. I guess I'm saying that I think it works. Not what you were after perhaps, but still valid IMO.

Always good to see your work, Jim. Pity they are so small. I would imagine these compositions working particularly well as large prints.

Joel and Stone,

Thanks. Both of you have made me see it with a slightly different perspective, and for that, thanks. I seem to react to a situation and take the photo. Once in a while, I "see" the lines, light, texture, comp or whatever the term is. But so often it is pure reaction. I wish I were more cerebral in my actions. I have a friend from Grand Junction who is an electrical engineer and we are on shoots quite often. He and will observe each others image on the ground glass. I always love it when we do this because he will not only explain why he sets up the composition the way he does, but he will also "explain" to me what I am seeing or what he is seeing in my composition. After he is done explaining, I just agree. He is very deliberate, I generally just react. I am attempting to be more "cerebral."

Thanks Harley. You, of course know where both of these are taken. I think the second one was taken just before you came out last spring, but it also could be from the previous fall. I need to make better notes.

In my remote sensing classes back in the 1980s we did a section on Shiprock and the interpretations of Hogback ridges. The one to the east (the one I mistakenly drove to in the dark before predawn) was the most striking (pun intended) of the hogback ridges, from the imagery that is. It the dark from the road it was not that impressive.

May I ask? How much Digital sharpening do you do to your images? They seem very sharp in almost surreal way, it could just be the scene or some kind of filter you using on the camera, but it almost looks like a digital sharpening or clarity slider filter, this is not in any kind of unpleasant way, just wondering.

All my pictures are sharpened exactly the same way (sharpening 50, masking 40), I've defined a LR preset long time ago and apply it during import. Perhaps a very fine moss texture requires weaker sharpening. But this place *is* surreal, so maybe this is a good thing :)

Cool, yea, your comment about not finding a good composure made me laugh, you can basically point the camera in any direction and you're going to come out with something interesting, not that your skills are also coming into play here, but it is a very beautiful place it seems, really really lovely.

You are right, you can just wait for the good weather (which can be frustrating in Iceland) and press the shutter aiming almost at random thing (sky excluded)...
But that makes hard to take photos, if you want to stand out from the crowd. Anyway, when I was composing this picture my brain was probably oxygen-poisoned :D
I still like it, but less than on site.

Jmarmck
20-Jan-2015, 09:36
There are very few photos I have taken that were as good much less better than "on site". About the only ones that push my buttons are things like sand and snow. The shapes and forms can be isolated enough to capture the true feel of the scene. I find large mountains one of the hardest to compose because so much of the scene is from what the camera does not capture both visually and with other senses. I am almost always less satisfied with photos of these types of landscapes.

JaZ, these remind me of the Mono Craters and the sides of the cone covered in loose ash.

Hi,

IMHO this is caused by FlickR, they sharpen when they generate the downscaled versions,
to see the original you go to this one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaz99/16323166172/sizes/o/

Great one Jiri. Did you use some swing to get the left side slighly out of focus/soft? It also looks like whatever movements you used made the fog more noticable on that side.

I really like the effect.

Jiri Vasina
21-Jan-2015, 01:13
Colorado CJ, thanks.

Yes, I did use some swing on the left side (on the left I wanted the foreground in focus, but on the right the trees, the main point of focus are farther...) and a bit of front tilt. But it's also the property of the lens used. I don't know the exact coverage of the lens or what format it was intended for (I think it was HalfPlate), so using it on 5×8" sheet might be a bit taxing - it does light the whole format, but the edges might be out of sharp coverage. This photo was taken at f/11.

This was more of a lens trial shot - first I made a similar composition with (my preferred) Xenar 210mm, but this "test shot" from the Schiffel 180mm lens works better. I had to step some 1.5m or 2m up the stream for the 180mm lens composition and the perspective is better.

Thanks. The second was what I had in mind ahead of time, but when I got to my planned location everything was underwater. I made the first image and figured that was it. Then, about a mile down the road the water was gone, so I pulled over and made the second image.

It was clear and the sun had come up when I did the second one, but by the time I got done I thought maybe I had frostbitten my fingers. When I got back in the car and checked the temperature it was 26 degrees (Fahrenheit, for you foreigners who were thinking I am a sissy, which I am) - no wonder.

I've been working my way through this thread, thoroughly enjoying the images. I have a couple of questions. First, sometimes I encounter posts where the image is no longer available. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason. Why are the images no longer available? Second, I also encounter a message to "discover Imageshack." When I follow the link, I do discover Imageshack, but no images. Is this normal, or should I be doing something different? I am using my iPad, if that matters.

I would like to post & share some of my 4x5 images, but I lack both an adequate scanner and the funds to buy the popular Epson 700/750/800/850, especially when I can spend that amount on darkroom/camera equipment & supplies.

Images disappear when people upload them to a site like flickr for the hosting and then delete them from flickr at a later date. For some reason, they think a deleted image will still appear here. It doesn't.

I scan with a Canon Canoscan 9950 that I bought from a member here, and it seems to usually do a good job. (I have two images a few posts back that were done with it.) A friend has a better scanner that I use for things I really want to print, but the 9950 does very well other than some issues I've had with Newton rings when there is a large blank area on the negative - that issue does not seem to arise consistently. Such scanners seem to be pretty inexpensive if you can find one. One caveat is that I use Vuescan with it, which is another $80 or so.

There's something I really like about this image the more I look at it.
I like the shadow across the trees in the top left-hand corner, and the dark cloud just behind that.
The bright foreground gives the shot a nice depth.
An otherwise ordinary scene made extra-ordinary; well seen, and well done.

Thanks!

Just an experiment to see how my Kodak Ektar 203mm F7.7 lens worked without the back lens attached (I really wanted a longer lens, but only have the 203mm and a 125mm yet). I couldn't get focus with my bellows, so I had to stop all the way down to F64.

As you can see, I didn't get my exposure right, I forgot to add the bellows factor into the exposure.

Shot with a Zone VI 4x5 camera and Ektar 203 f7.7 lens on Fomapan 200 film. Developed in Pyrocat MC for 8.5 minutes.

I've never seen a 4x5 camera who's bellows couldn't handle a 200mm lens, so I'm a little confused about your comment that you couldn't get focused with the Bellows.

Also, I don't know what you're talking about with exposure because this is perfect, whatever you thought you wanted this is much better, I'm just saying this is such a beautiful image, I suspect the brighter exposure would not have been as good.

Colorado CJ, you don't need a bellows exposure correction if you're focused at infinity. The bellows draw will be the same (or nearly the same) as the focal length of the front lens group you used. Nice view of Longs Peak, its North face, the Notch, parts of the Boulder Field, and Mt. Lady Washington. Good photo.

But if you remove piece of glass does it change the effective aperture?

Jiri Vasina
27-Jan-2015, 13:00
Yes it does. On convertible lenses, there is the secondary inscription. On non-convertible, you can roughly approximate by measuring the aperture's diameter and divide the focal length by the diameter. From what I understand, real aperture size might differ from apparent aperture based on lens construction. I might be wrong here, though...

My first LF lens was a 210mm Rodenstock Sironar convertible. With one lens group it was very difficult to find the correct focus so I rarely used it that way. The lens did have dual aperture scales, the green numbers were for the converted setup and its focal length was over 400mm.

Thanks everyone.

I DID say it was an experiment ;). I guessed at F64 as the shutter is only marked to F45. The lens stops way past the F45 mark though. It may be F90 for all I know. I'll definitely be experimenting more with this as I can see its usefulness as a somewhat soft focus telephoto lens.

Here's one more of the experimental shots using just the front element of the Ektar 203mm F7.7 lens. These negatives were EXTREMELY thin. I had to do a lot of work to try to get anything out of them.

With this photo, I was not sure about the correct exposure parameters. The difference between sunlit snow and dark trees in the shade was great, way over the possibilities of digital chips. I expected the film to cope well with it, but the end result still surprised me...

That is what happens when you let the guide direct you. The ones I ran into wanted more cash to go to "restricted" areas.

I was there about a month ago. Too many friggin people on both upper and lower. Parking lot was overflowing. I tried to find a southern route into there without success. Never got near the canyons. Too far south. I did go downstream to the boat ramp. Water was way down.

Just checked – yes, it's the penultimate image in the book, page 139, a b/w image from HP5+ film.

In the caption, author Simmons tells the story about how Gordon Hutchings got the shot. I love how he says Hutchings visualized the scene "just after it was discovered," and raced back to his nearby pick-up for his 8x10 camera and 600mm lens.

It leaves one curious about how many times this fantastic scene has been "discovered"!

Yup…shortly after I printed the Zion image - which I took in (I think) 1992 - I began to see others. Kind of like when you hear an unfamiliar word spoken - then suddenly its everywhere.
I also had some velvia loaded, and have some nice 4x5 chromes of this - but I do like Heroique’s vertical! At any rate…I used to show this photo to my students and tell them it was a cabbage cut in half - then tell them to bring me back some abstracts!

The Antelope Canyon photo was taken in May of 2012. I’d visited here twenty years earlier and had the place pretty much to myself - but now…whoa! Countless tours with leaders blowing their whistles…trying to keep their groups together. People really getting unpleasant vying for the “perfect” photo. Throwing sand into the light to get the perfect light beam…complete madness. The only way I could shoot was to flatten myself and my tripod legs against a wall, and aim my camera upwards. Still, half my exposures blurred due to others jostling me. ARRGGHH! But know what? This place is still so compelling that I’d return in a heartbeat - no matter the chaos! Here is another…which I need to take back into the dark to deal with that bit of flare.
128698

And heads up: I need to get a bit off my chest (finally!) regarding my L-45A (some of you may remember this), and will likely do this very soon, in either the “show me your camera” section, and/or in “Introductions.” No real commercial intentions at this point…just wanting to share some info. for any of you who may want to know what became of this project. So stay tuned!

Nice Jiri! Very peaceful. Wonderful tones.

As for crowds and noise. When I was at monument valley I took the 17 mile loop. I got there just at sunrise, wandered down to the valley. The locals were just setting up their vending area. There was very few people. I got down to the valley stopped to shoot. There was absolutely no sound. Perfectly quiet. No people, no machines of any kind, no bugs, no birds, no wind (for once). Just perfect quiet with a warm sun just coming up. Add to this the fact that this was something I have wanted to do for over 30 years. Very spiritual. This was an experience I wish I could photograph completely.

But standing in line with a thousand people was not part of this image. It was not part of the plan for that day and I did not have the entire day to waste on standing in line being shoved.
Despite all that I like John's image very much. I plan to go back and find other canyons. I want to rent a house boat and take a week....but not in January.

Would have liked to have houseboat amenities, but we still had a wonderful time. Then again, this was more about family time than my own photography. A houseboat would make a great base of "photographic operations," although I must say I'd be very tempted to smuggle some processing equipment aboard!

Yes, from my perspective it is very low. I parked at the boat trailer parking lot down the road from the Antelope Canyon. I had to walk at least 20 ft vertical to hit water. It could have been more like 30. I took several digital shots of the some really nice layering in the rock. The rocks were coated with white (Fe+3). I did not lug the 4x5 down those steep areas. I have some digital stuff from the dam too.

As for the houseboat, I plan to take processing gear, light proof material, and some tape. Though, I am not sure how to workout the water supply issue. This trip is still in the infancy of the planning stage

I sure am glad I did the houseboat camp thing on Lake Powell when it first filled, 1980. The water was very clear, many fish to be seen. My friend and I slept on shore above the bugs, maybe 20 feet above the highest point the water ever hit. I was sad for the displaced desert, people and critters that once lived below. I prefer sleeping rough to being in a houseboat. We also towed a speedboat.

We eventually got some snow here in the north of Germany and I made a short trip yesterday to try my new camera stuff. I swithed to an Chamonix 045N-2 and a Shen hao back. I´m very pleased with both, exspecially because I can use longer lenses now on 6x17. These were shot with 75mm on 4x5 and 210mm on 6x17, both on Tmax 100

These are fantastic, especially the pano shot!

That is the odd thing about this, no filters. I believe this was with the Grandagon 115 @f22, TMX @ 100, HC-110 1:31. I did not plan on the gradient.

I was at Shiprock last year photographing with my 8x10. I have similar pictures of Shiprock like that, been there several times over the years. With a clear blue sky it's not unusual in the West, especially if you use a filter.

Yes, another vote for the pano image - I love it.

And the above image as well - a wonderful example of how great an almost monochrome color image can be.

Jiri - I love the grays...and the sparkling highlight - just to the right of the five bare trees - very compelling!

Marty - RE the houseboat: In June of 1998, my wife, two children then ages 10 and 12, and myself, loaded our camping gear into a rented ski-boat equipped with a 150 hp. Mercury engine - figuring that the 186 miles of lake Powell would simply take too long for our schedule to see with a much slower houseboat. Would have liked to have houseboat amenities, but we still had a wonderful time. Then again, this was more about family time than my own photography. A houseboat would make a great base of "photographic operations," although I must say I'd be very tempted to smuggle some processing equipment aboard!

But about lake Powell - last time I visited, in 2012, the water level was very low. Is it still - or has it come up a bit?

John, thanks a lot. It was a great moment, but as any interesting weather, it passed very quickly. Those 5 trees in the distance were the main attraction for the composition, but they were still too far even with the longest lens (300mm without the rear element -> ~420mm). I don't usually carry along the 480mm Apo-Ronar because of it's weight. But I see that I will have to return there for another take on those trees... ;)

Very nice shot. I've never had good results with the convertible element of my Symmar.

Thanks. Foma 200 has been my go-to film (though I am still learning what I like). It is a bit grainy and there are some small imperfections sometimes, but it is cheap and I love the long flat curve.

Did you pull up the shadows on the computer?

I actually added some contrast. When scanning, I adjust the historogram to get the full information of the negative. I set the contrast curve to linear, then scan.

This gives a full information scan (as much information as the 750 can get anyway), though somewhat flat looking. I then use Photoshop to adjust the curves to get the image to my liking, then sometimes add sepia to the blacks/greys sometimes.

The pictures always look better on my photoshop screen than they do here since Flickr always adds a lot more contrast when uploading for some reason. I always have to edit the photo in Flickr and take contrast out to get it close to what my image looks like in Photoshop. Its close, but always looks more contrasty and has more pixelated edge effects than it does in Photoshop.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I love color shots of snow where it almost looks monochrome, but that little bit of color sets it apart. I think that's why I didn't particularly care for the shot of this I made on Delta 100. The scene was almost monochrome to begin with so the black and white didn't add anything to the image.

Arkasha - fantastic! The balanced tension between the upper trees...reflections of cloud/sky density shapes complimenting the upper margins of foreground reeds...the way the slightly diagonal hummock in the center falls over the darker tree reflections...how the edges of delicate ice forms just kiss the edges of the image...a delicately moody sky.

About the only thing I would change here would be to slightly (and progressively) burn down the oblong shape of what appears to be frost-covered grass, which appears at the water's upper edge on the left. Also the same for the shoreline on the right - from water's edge up to just shy of the tree-trunks - try burning this down slightly. As things are here, these two areas pull my eyes outward just a bit. And just maybe...a slight edge-burn on the very lower right of the photo.
