It's the Canyon Overlook trail in Zion.

First of all, great images Nana. I was hoping someone else would post some images after yours because that is a hard act to follow. Your use of a wide angle is something I admire along with perfect compositions and wonderful tonal range.

So, here are a few images taken on a recent trip to the southwest. As you will notice this group of images is of Factory Butte near Hanksville, Utah. I have been stopping by this feature for years and generally have had little luck. This past winter I finally had some nice light and clouds. On two consecutive mornings, the light and clouds just kept on changing. So here are a few of the shots from the two mornings. All taken on an ebony 8x10 using Fuji Provia or Velvia.

Nice. Where exactly is Factory Butte? I've looked on maps off and on ever since I saw this image by William Clift back in the seventies.

I can't show it as it was shot on 35mm Kodachrome but there's a very similar cut stream running down into the Colorado on bright angel trail in the Grand Canyon, I suppose there's probably a bunch that look the same lol.

About halfway between Capitol Reef and Goblin Valley. I have just seen it from a disatace from Hwy 24.

Martin - thanks - this was from a small bridge on a dirt track, a few kilometres from the main Transpantaneira. There are much better images to be had from either a boat, or from horseback, but it´s really challenging to use a Sinar monorail in those situations - perhaps a Speed Graphic would be the ideal camera?

I apologize I'm posting this twice but for some reason I am unable to edit my posts...and flickr really messed with the contrast of my last post so I had to make the correction.

Thanks for the reply

I have an Ebony and have never managed to take a decent shot from a boat yet.

I have always been thwarted by the movement of the boat, as I have found that its almost impossible to get other people to sit still for long enough for the boat to stop moving.

Most peoples idea of sitting still in a boat - is not walking around - collectively they seem unable to stop shuffling for long enough

A higher shutter speed and hand held smaller format has been more fruitful

PDM -- It is about a 2 mile walk down the line to get to this location. It's near Storm King along the Hudson. Original inspiration was Carleton Watkin's "Cape Horn near Celilo, Oregon"...

Oh I did that too!! -15 degrees at the.... South? Rim of the Grand Canyon in January at 5am for the sunrise... Brrr out there for almost 2 hours.

Yeah, it gets a bit chilly no doubt, especially if there's wind. Good times. Sounds like an ideal morning to work with a Mamiya7 rather than a large format camera. Large format is certainly doable under subzero temps (-25 F is about the coldest I've dealt with), but I don't think I'd describe it as "fun" at that point. Thankfully the images tend to be exciting when it gets that cold.

Hah! Last OT comment.

At least with LF you get to be under a nice warm cloth ;) haha

Of course you have to hold your breath or you fog the glass...

And you would think it would be better with the Mamiya 7 but this is actually what got me into LF... The Mamiya 7's batteries get too cold at those temps and give out on you...

Try unscrewing a battery door and replacing a tiny battery in -15 degrees with no gloves on to get the tiny battery door back on... Yea... Not fun... So it's LF for me now in cold temps if it's a good setup, but the Mamiya 7 with good tight grain film is almost as good as LF... Love that glass!

Last weekend I made the short trip up to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At the time I went, most of the trees were still bare. Also, the days that I was there were nothing but clear skies. Therefore, I decided to load up some 4x5 black and white film and concentrate on waterfalls and cascades. I drove to the park well before sunrise so that I could avoid both the crowds and direct sunlight. One of my biggest reasons for avoiding the Smokies up to this point (even though it's essentially in my back yard) has been the large amount of people. However, I have discovered that if you arrive before the sunrise, you can still have the entire place to yourself; it was very peaceful and I look forward to exploring the great park more!

The first image below was taken somewhere along the Middle Prong. Cascades like these are literally everywhere you look in the Smokies and the trick is bringing some order to the chaos. For this image I tried to anchor it with the water sweeping into the lower left corner and the rock on the lower right.

Images 2 and 3 were taken at Spruce Flats Falls. This hike is not listed on the trail map, but it is definitely worthwhile. Beginning just behind Tremont Institute, a short, easy hike leads to a beautiful set of falls. I had the entire place to myself for almost two hours. As I was packing up to leave, I probably passed 50 people on the trail! Timing is everything. Also, I can report that your feet will go numb in under a minute while standing in the water.

All images were self-developed in Ilfosol-3 and scanned with an Epson V700. C&C welcome and appreciated.

Lovely set from the smokies. I recently did the same in a local national park. I arrived at 0550 and headed down the trail. I hiked 16km before I saw another person. It was an incredibly peaceful and relaxing time. Just me, the 4x5 and hundreds of square kilometers of pristine rainforest.

Best day out I've had in quite a while.

(Cross posted on FM)

Why not, finarphin? My modest opinion maybe is that scan could be better, only but I haven't from of me the sheet. I like very much this landscape.

Gracias, OCM, I'm glad you like it.

Tolerances. Everything in photography revolves around tolerances: lens design, shutter construction, everything. The photographer handles the tolerances in depth of field and range in tone. Here I didn't think I achieved a good result, especially if we want to hold to the tenets of the f64 group. Zone I and Zone II (the trees) have merged. There is blocking on the Porcelain Wall (below the Diving Board, to the right of the face). And there is an unsuccessful differentiation between the figure (Half Dome) and the ground (the sky). On top of that I find it to be soft. I forget where I focused, but it was somewhere in front of the face. Washington Column (on the left) is fairly sharp, and the buttress leading away from Half Dome on the right is likewise fairly sharp, but Half Dome itself is soft. It was either f45 or f64. I couldn't believe it.

The scan could be better, especially since this is a scan of a print, rather than a negative. I think if I worked with it in the darkroom for a couple of days I could improve it, but there's something wrong with it in the range of tone, something that I notice with almost all the prints from this camera and lens, which I don't find in prints done from negatives from my 4x5 and a Schneider Symmar. Of course this is a contact print rather than an enlargement, maybe that has something to do with it.

Thanks for your kind explanation finarphin. I agree with you.

When a negative gives me problems probably due to complex exposures, sometimes when I make a print, I use as chemistry with Amidol. I take a nice surprise, just sometimes ...

Nice work. Great depth.
The colors miss a little of the Ektar pop, but that's easily corrected. It could use a little more red, but it might be just a profile problem.

I agree about the depth, was tempted to ask the exposure settings and movements.

I think the lack of color is more about the light then anything else, and I think for this particular shot it's not too bad I actually agree with the exposure level, or rather it agrees with me. Otherwise the sky in the background would be all blown out.

As far as the colortone, I'm not sure if that's the film itself, as it tends to shift the blue in lower exposure levels anyway, or the scan itself. But honestly I think it's good how it is.

Thanks for your comments, all. I appreciate your input. I guess I really need to invest in a calibration device. Looking at the picture from work, it seems more blue/purple, a bit darker and less saturated then what I had on screen. I'm kind of color managment illiterate and I think i should spend some time learning about this

Calibration is not scary anymore. It used to be complicated, but by now most software is really easy to use and it just tells you what to do.

I don't think it looks too dark, the exposure seems spot on to me. I like the canyon a little dark, it feels real.

Exquisite image, Harley. Very well done. I'm pretty certain they are in the phlox family, of which there are MANY varieties. I've seen them often in the higher elevations near rocks, normally with white or pink blossoms though. Colors usually range from white to pink to violet, and normally have five petals in a pentagonal arrangement. If you Google "phlox" you'll bring up a wealth of info.

Cracked Mud and Flowers

I was in Utah last week, hanging out with Jim Becia (who I met through the forum). It was a very fun time and we even managed to waste a little film.

If anyone knows the name of these flowers, feel free to share. Comments and critiques are always welcome on my images.

This one is also from Utah. It is a bit more on the abstract side. Jim and I found an interesting area with views in all directions. This one happened to be looking down. It is some white dirt/mineral hills and this scene is probably 20 yards across.

My GF and I hiked a pretty steep trail in the Smoky Mountains, one way off the beaten path, last month. There was a small overlook cut from the brush and trees, and from there I took this shot looking down into the valley. One of the rare times I've used the 720mm lens. Stopped down to about f/32 if I remember, and it is razor-sharp. Much better than I expected. I use a monopod to stabilize the front standard - the whole thing, when setup and focused, is a bit unwieldy, but it's better than hoofing out a big monorail!

10-May-2014, 01:49
Very nice again Harley.

How do you go with the 450mm on the Chamonix? Do you use the extension rail to achieve focus?

At that focal length, does atmospheric conditions affect image sharpness/clarity? As someone who used to shoot small formats, I always found longer focal length landscapes were always hindered by scintillation in the air.. This image of yours appears to be completely unaffected by this... Its as clear as if I was standing there..

Very well executed (as usual from you!)

Harley Goldman
10-May-2014, 05:58
Good catch, finarphin. It was reversed! Jeez, nice bonehead on my part. Fixed.

Alex, I use the extension board with the 450. The atmospheric conditions don't seem to affect sharpness or clarity any more than if I was using my 240mm. The 450 is a really sharp lens and the Chamonix is amazingly rigid with the extension board. I find it far more rigid with the 450mm than was my Arca racked out with the lens on a top hat board.

Made the trip up to Great Smoky Mountains National Park last weekend. It's about an hour and a half drive, but I had to leave at 4:30 a.m. to beat the crowds, because I was hiking to Grotto Falls...one of the most popular falls in the park. The falls are unique in that the trail actually goes behind them. I was the first one there and took 3 different compositions, the large format equivalent of spray-and-pray! All are Ilford Delta 100 4x5, souped in Ilfosol-3, 4:15 at 68F, using BTZS tubes (my first time using these and I'm absolutely sold on them!). Scanned using an Epson V700. I like the slender threads of water in image #2.

This is another from my Utah trip. This is the backside of Factory Butte.

Those soft-sloping contours in the foreground please the eye – I can see why Southeast Utah attracts so many mountain bikers.

And what a contrast those contours form with the butte's sharp, jagged crown.

Thanks Dennis! My favorite time, and probably the most popular time, is in the fall. The color is truly spectacular! There is one major consideration to visiting in the fall though, and that is how crowded the park will be! Weekends are usually MISERABLE due to traffic. Don't let this keep you from visiting though, it just takes a little planning. Try to get there early and if possible on weekdays.

The next best time to visit IMO is in the spring around the beginning of May. The park's wildflowers will be in full bloom, and the green of the new leaves is a great color show in its own right. Arriving early is again recommended. For this particular hike, as I was setting out I had the entire park to myself. On the return trip I probably passed 50 people on the trail!

Thanks! In all fairness, I must admit to bumping up the saturation a bit digitally, but not beyond what I felt the scene merited. I think had I shot with Ektar this would have been very close color wise to the original scan.

C&C welcome and appreciated!
...

I think you've really captured the essence of this waterfall. Black and white is very fitting for this type of work. Definitely looking forward to heading out and making waterfall images on black and white film -- these images are just further inspiration for that!

Thank you for contributing. May i respectfully draw your attention to the middle ground area which presents as out of focus. Perhaps a more refined front tilt, adjustment of focus point and/or stopping down to f45 or greater would have allowed that area to be sharp. A polarizer in strong light is also recommended to reduce the contrast somewhat.

I can not speak to processing but I would add that frequently more detail is discernable in lower light situations.

Good composition. We would enjoy seeing more.

Yes, Thank you PDM! I got a late start that day and it was quite bright! I had trouble tilting to get that area focused, I think I only stopped to f22, thanks for the advice.

Very nice Sebastian.

The colors really pop. I cannot decide which of the two I like better though. The brightness of the poppy's and the detail of the grass in the first are super sharp, yet the colors of the sky and the feeling of the clouds in the sunset in the second just grab my eye.

Great work on both.
