I have posted BW version (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?44249-Large-Format-Landscapes&p=505905&viewfull=1#post505905) of the photographs before - now I got a better scan and managed to save the underexposed parts of the image.

I really like this one as well. The light is beautiful, and the subtle colors are very pleasing. The composition too, is spot on; the sunlit trees seem to be pulling left and the top of the mountains pulling right and in the middle there's that great dark swath of shadow. It's well balanced. Excellent!

Nice one, Jim. Yeah, v100 is no RVP but there are times when I wish I had some loaded for 8x10.

Somewhere here in the recent archives Jim Cole had a wonderful image of this beach scene in B & W. It prompted me to seek out the area when I was in the vicinity in Nov 2013. This is Skaket beach in Orleans on the bay side of Cape Cod at maximum low tide. I liked the repeating sandbars and somber sky and the repeating horizontal lines. Image from about noontime 11/26/13, between cold heavy rain showers. The white foreground is wind blown sea foam frozen by the 25 F temperature and piled up on the beach.

Both are really nice, but that's no one is incredible, perfect subtle blue light, what made you choose the saturated version for a very white scene?

Thank you for your kind comments. Choice of film was usually what was available to me from my local supplier and E100s and the sw version were, for a while, easier to find that Velvia. Also, I found I was losing too many images to light wind and the extra speed of ASA 100 did make a slight difference. The Maples are subtle and I recall working hard and fast to find the best composition. Frequently I walk away from a great situation because I can't get a composition that works for me.
In low light Velvia 50 is king. Velvia 100 shifts too far to magenta but in some instances it is desirable as it adds color saturation which is, let us say, evocative. The saturation and color shift can be modifed somewhat in PS. As my professor once said to me, "know they film".

Thanks Andrew, I'm still really disappointed in that one image where the side rafters aren't parallel to the edge of the frame (it was just so dark I didn't even see them in the frame).
I'm obviously trying to make the best of it, I haven't been back yet, I don't know if I'll shoot any more honestly, it was very hard. But maybe.
I'm basically going to let the bank deal with it, the home values in that area dropped after the real estate crisis and never rebounded. My house (before) burning was worth 33% of the mortgage I had, so I couldn't sell it, and I had no insurance on it at all, so there is no financial return from the fire in it for me, so I've written a letter to the bank and applied for a special motion to the court to force the bank to foreclose on me, since they refused to do so for the past year(strange but true, even they didn't want it.... It's a blessing in disguise, a new chapter soon I hope, just have to focus on the good.
So in that spirit, the good...
Same trip, (posted one at waters edge thread but it's also land...)

Here are a couple of images taken this past fall in Zion. On two consecutive afternoons, I was treated to a couple of rainbows. Only thing I did not get was the pot of gold. The first image was from my first time up into this area. I took the 5x7 because the day had been downright windy. As I was setting up, a storm blew in that soaked me and my equipment. I had an umbrella along but trying to control the umbrella in this kind of weather was near impossible. When the rainbow came out I had on my 300, so I focused on this one section. I think I managed 3 shots before the rainbow dissipated. Trying to photograph in weather like this was quite the chore - from trying to keep water off of the lens, keep the dark-slide dry, metering, etc. The film was Velvia 100F. I went back up to the same area the next afternoon and took the 8x10. It had been another blustery, cloudy day with off and on showers. I figured I'd take the 8x10 and see what happens. I set up with a 150 Nikkor F8 to frame what is known as the West Temple. I got my focusing down and then waited. Sure enough in rolled more stormy weather. I was able to capture the entire rainbow with a quick adjustment. Again I was able to get 3 shots taken before the rainbow disappeared. This image that I scanned was on E100VS.

Jim, holy bejesus!!! Incredible!
So are the rainbows typical in this spot?
FYI there's over 10 boxes of 8x10 E100G (exp 2/2014) on eBay right now, the guy even says he's open to taking less money on bulk buys. If you're interested...
Great shots for sure and worth the wait! I've been considering 8x10 but I'm a scan type person for chromes and it just doesn't seem to make sense to go to 8x10 since "THE" scanner Eps750V uses the lesser lens.
And if I do start printing B&W ... Getting an 8x10 enlarger... (For free) Should be fun...
Since I'm babbling I should share an image...
Precipice Peak, Mt Desert, ME, USA
Looking again, I should have used the 150mm but 1 had just gotten the 90mm and 2 the 150mm sticks at 1s and 1/2 so I didn't want to chance it. Not the best shot, but any 4x5 chrome that's exposed properly to me at this stage in my career is a success hah!

I'm not sure I would say typical, but due to the formation facing west and with most weather coming from that general direction, I would say that when the conditions are right, there would be a decent chance in the afternoon.

Ok deal, just make sure I'm in the will HAHAHAHA :)
I'm actually afraid of Deardorff's now because of the whole Cochran ordeal, if I ever want it fixed I have now where to go... And if I had sent him my camera and it wasn't returned, I would have gone over there and he might have problems repairing anymore after he was done with mine (I'm all talk of course).
Anyway, I kind of want to skip 8x10 and just shoot 11x14 and 20x24 and contact print those, they are my two favorite print sizes anyway. But, I'll NEVER be able to afford THAT.

Luckily I found a good deal on a 11x14 Studio Deardorff with huge stand. They were made here in Chicago and it seems many have stayed. There is nothing on this camera I cannot fix and I doubt it will need any fixing for another 80 years. I am having new bellows made and Richard Ritter is conforming my back to his holders.
I also want to contact print 11x14 and larger, since I have 100 sheets of X-Ray 14x17 I must shoot that pinhole. This is inner city, up and coming from ghetto to a place I can no longer afford to buy into, but I got in 10 years ago when it was just right.
Right now Chicago is building a local version of the NYC High Line at my doorstep. I plan to shoot (with cameras of course) people right from my stoop. Can't miss, there will be a ramp and staircase right here, after a very messy year of destruction. http://the606.org/
I got's plans, see!
Here is one similar to mine, less than a mile away, not selling and they just lowered the price from $4500. Hard things to sell, hard to move, hard to have the right space. It is missing the 11x14 back...The seller is a well known Chicago portrait shooter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spectacular-Deardorff-8x10-S11-Studio-Camera-and-Stand-/321279286470?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item4acdbcdcc6

Of course, I did not grinded the glass. It's too much even for crazy Russian :)
Optic for this lens (multicoated plastic) was ordered in ophthalmologist shop. It is just the blank for eyeglasses manufacturing.
There are three important parameters for meniscus:
diopters - affects focal length
lens curvature - affects balance between corner sharpness and astigmatism aberration (astigmatism, in turn, affects bokeh smoothness).
distance between the meniscus and diaphragm - affects amount of coma aberration. The more coma, then more "swirly" the picture. I dont' like swirl, so trying to minimise coma in my designs
The rough design was calculated in WinLens (http://www.winlens.de) and tuned by trial and error. If you want, I can write detailed post in "DIY" forum.
This is a photos of 167mm meniscus:
108749108750108751
It looks and works like a modern lens. No PVC tubes, no waterhouse stops, no old junk. Diaphragm controlled by shutter, as usual.
Yellow-green filter is a part of lens design, it reduces chromatical aberrations (more sharp picture).

No, it's classical one element meniscus, lens behind aperture. There is no optical element in front, only YG filter to reduce chromatism and protect shutter.

Really great result! That "look" is much prettier and more refined than almost any other meniscus lens that I have seen. If you had a bunch of those made up ready to go with threads for a Copal shutter, I would be first in line to buy one.

Thank you for kind words, Corran!
The hardest part of lens assembly is a threaded adapter to screw step-up rings into Copal shutter. Adapter should be custom machined and I had difficult times trying to find reliable machinist in Moscow. It was much easier to produce these damn adapters in China than here.
If I have a chance to make more adapters, I'll let you know.

I can't believe that all of the machine shops in the Moscow area are gone. When you hang around with older machinists, and tell your sad story, they'll tell you where to look. Machinists are like photogrphers, they know what everybody else is doing.

Hi StoneNYC,
The image is difficult to print due to the values in the sky which easily loose separation. Same is true for the hills in front of the mountains. A lot gets lost in this image if not very carefully printed. I was able to make a fairly good wet print, but always felt it could be even better with more concentrated control not achievable with traditional printing. In PS I used luminosity masks and other masking techniques to help with the printing issues. There are still a few improvements I would make, but the results here far surpass what I could do in the darkroom.
The film used was Tri-X type 4164 (1980's vintage). It was on a thicker base than typical Tri-X for 35mm, similar to other 4x5 film bases. I don't recall what Kodak's ASA was, but, from my own testing, usually rated it about 200-320.
Regards,
Dennis

I would say that it is well worth the effort.
I would not mind seeing this printed on a somewhat warmish paper (rock in the forefront specially) with carbon ink.

These three images were from this fall here in Wisconsin. The fall colors were very spotty and poor, at least in those areas I visited. All three of these shots were taken on the one morning where a little fog rolled in and gave some atmosphere to the images. The first and third images are the same set of trees, just from different angles, and the second image was taken a few hundred yards down the road at a different pond. All were taken with an Ebony 8x10. The first on with a Fuji 300 f5.6, the second with a Nikkor 450 f8, and the third with a Fuji 210 f5.6.

Those are nice. I was up by you in October and as far as Reedsburg, and took a last look at the family farm near LaRue. Perhaps my last trip to the area. I was riding a very small motorcycle. I stopped at my friends new restaurant in Mineral Point, he used to run my favorite French Bistro walking distance to me in Chicago. I guess he retired to God's Country. http://www.mpdiningcompany.com/
I really love the entire area.

The design is very beautiful. I have experience working with the Winlens. But not for the photographic lens. Rather, for making optical viewfinder. But, it is very difficult to build a lens for photography. I congratulate to you.

This was taken in Wadi Lajjab in Saudi Arabia. I was going down a 7 meter tall rock. luckly i looked back and saw this cave under the pile of rocks. I knew i was up to something as soon as i heard the waterfall.
This is a very difficult exposure. It was shot on a 4x5 camera with a normal lens on Ilford Delta 100. I had to use f64 to get everything in focus from near to far. I couldn't use any movements because that would throw the top rocks out of focus. I was about 4 meters into the pile. the light was very dim with the waterfall being the only source of light, with faint light coming from the back. The waterfall metered 16 seconds while the dark water to left metered 27 minutes! I settled on 6 minutes but had to increase my time due to reciprocity failure to 15 minutes.
I am glad it turned out just the way i wanted it.

hmm i wouldn't say this is subterranean. The valley is an amazing crack that is 4 meters at the narrowest. just enough for one car. The walls are like 6 stories buildings. you can only drive for about a mile then you have to continue on foot. there is a small restaurant on a small area above dangerous levels. it is very dramatic getting into the place. there are four valleys that pour into this one. if you see a cloud you should run for it. it takes a few hours for a strong stream to build up. out cars, people and huge rocks. water springs from the bed of the valley which means the stream has no where to go but forward taking out cars, trees, people and huge rocks. this cavity is a result of the rocks that drifted in the valley or brook from the walls. they pile on top of each other creating something like this. i once went deep into the valley until i reached an area where i could not pass except through diving under a huge rock for about 6 or 7 meters. i could see light from the other end under the big rock. i did not have the guts to attempt that dive. it took me a couple of hours to come back to my car. contemplating on that later. i don't think i have time to go back to my car if it rains. i think it is best to climb up but climbing up is not easy if at all possible. On my second visit things have changed. i vividly remember the place. this cavity was filled with water. so the place is forever changing making it fun to photograph.
i am glad you liked the picture Heroique

On my second visit things have changed. i vividly remember the place. this cavity was filled with water. so the place is forever changing making it fun to photograph.
i am glad you liked the picture Heroique.
Thanks for the extra details about the Arabian landscape. :^)
As it continues to change, hope you share additional images.

Guess I missed a shot...

Beautiful Austin!
Thanks Randy. Thanks Holden. I stood in this field for a long time making compositions out of the broken corn stalks on the ground but everything felt wrong somehow. Then I realized that what I REALLY wanted to do was not to make a picture of broken corn stalks, but a picture of what it feels like to stand in a field of broken corn stalks under a big empty sky. So I leveled the camera, cranked up the front rise, and voila! To think, it took me ten years to look up. :)

Great shot, I think that this type of strong contrast images are very difficult to realize.
In theory, the HC-110 developer not is the most adequate for the Tmax100 but the tones are very good here. Nice job!

The funny thing about this photo is that it looks like you could easily stroll up to the top from where I'm standing, but in fact it's about 5,000 ft higher (Mt. Hood's peak is at 11,250 ft). I'm planning to try and climb it for the first time this year, but I definitely wont be hauling the view camera.

Austin, that image makes the climb tempting from the south. But I'll vouch that Hood is one of the more difficult climbs with exceedingly steep sections - be seriously prepared if you try it. If you go, have fun at the Pearly Gates.

Hi Stone. Thanks for the comments.
The Old Velvia shift due to reciprocity is to a slight magenta which normally requires a warming filter which I did not use here. The rock colors are accurate but for that shift which can be exacerbated by any blue sky tones reflected on the scene. This was a post sunset shot, which at F32 required a calculated exposure of 1 minute and adding for reciprocity, brought it close to 2 minutes total. For years I used this technique to reduce contrast in certain images but only when the wind was completely dead.
The entire Sourland area is a real challenge to photograph with the 4x5 and I am pleased to say that I did come away with a few keepers.

Thanks, this is not Spain though, this is the state of Maine, in the United States. It is a National Park named Acadia. The government has sanctioned certain sites as national parts and limits building on those areas to preserve nature. It's nice but because they become tourist areas even the park service people have built roads and buildings that can get in the way of the natural beauty, but at least they exist and we can enjoy them.
Yes, I would say that I've got a similar image like yours. Thanks for the information.

Why not? It's BEAUTIFUL! Just can have some tourists at times.
So I got to see real-live snow for the first time in over 12 years! I know most of you see it all the time, but down here in the south it's very rare - even with the two "mega-storms" that hit north GA, nothing made it down to the extreme south end of the state where I live. However, I had a gig up in Athens so I stayed the weekend and took some time photographing out at Don Carter State Park, the newest state park in GA.
Here's an image from the first roll, taken with a Shen-Hao 6x17 with my Nikkor 90mm f/8 on Pan F+ and developed in Rodinal semi-stand. Happy to finally be using this camera. Since buying it in December I have been exceedingly overworked with 60+ hour weeks and barely anytime for photography :(.

this is great. at first it looks like you managed to knock your tripod down. then looking more carefully I see how the dynamism of the composition works. also the straightness of the trees especially the ones on the middle tells you why it looks like this. you can see clearly that the picture was taken on slope.
I like the contrast and tones. i think this looks great printed with strong blacks. would love to see that.

I'm going to try this printed with ink on some roll paper as I don't have an enlarger that can do 6x17. But I have to find/shoot another panorama so I don't waste a ton of paper only printing on half the width of the roll! I have two more rolls from the 6x17 to develop tonight or tomorrow...

I didn't know ektar100 could match Velvia for those nice sunset sky saturation, I'm impressed.

I've been very impressed with the latitude that Ektar 100 gives.
Now to be fair, I don't have any calibration or it-8 targets when scanning(I'm not sure it-8 targets are made for negatives), so I'm left with my own interpretation of where to put the RGB tone curves in Photoshop. I took a digital picture right after with my 5DMark II and tried to match the tones of the sky.
I'm not sure what range the lab would give when scanning, but I've seen scanned 35mm ektars and they have a nice Kodachrome feel to them. I'm sure the sky would be a little less vivid.
Regardless to say, the dynamic range of Ektar 100 is incredible compared to my digital.
Nice photograph, Deval!
Out of curiosity: Did you use ND Grads on this or is it all in the latitude of the film?
Best regards,
Martin

Whenever I hit a creative lull, as now, I tend to go back through old negatives looking for something to work on. This one was shot on our honeymoon in 1992. The negative is terrible; it sat in the holder for over three years after being exposed and was underdeveloped to boot. I have never been able to produce a satisfactory scan. Maybe I'll try intensifying the negative at some point and see what that does.

It's a masterpiece, Jonathan.
Thank you for saying so. It gave my wife fits to see me standing so close to the edge of the cliff with my tripod and gear, but that vantage point was the only way I could include the rocky beach below in the image--a beach, I should add, full of huge chunks of the cliff face that had fallen off over time. I was 24 when I shot this. I might not take that same risk today.
So you're saying this is an UNSATISFACTORY image? Wow... You have high standards ;)
It's a question of the final image, even after all these years, not matching my pre-visualized version of it. The negative is so flat as to be ridiculous. The histogram takes up about 20% of the very middle of the whole graph. The image and framing I'm happy with, though.
Jonathan, definitely worth working on. Really nice strong composition. This is the kind of image that gives me fits when trying to commit to a silver analogue process. Worth trying to do an enhanced scan, then using PS adjustments to suit. .
It's been a while since I was in a proper darkroom, but I think this might be nearly impossible to print by traditional means and retain a full complement of tones. I'm not a Photoshop wizard and therefore the final result still lacks punch. This was a close as I could get without it looking completely unnatural and "crunchy." A higher quality scan might help, as would some improved PS skills.
The Cliffs of Moher ?
Yes, indeed.

Very dramatic, Ari. A good reminder that I can push things farther than I usually do in post. This image might be a good candidate for the "Let Others Make Variations" thread.
I shot this scene on Velvia as well. (Sorry for the repost.) By virtue of being a tad underexposed it is closer in spirit to Ari's B&W interpretation. :

Hi Jonathan,
Marvelous shot and composition. I've been doing much the same - going back over old negatives, reprinting and improving them. It's an enjoyable challenge. I posted one recently in urban landscapes post #1888 (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?56978-post-your-urban-landscapes/page189&)
BTW did you ever use the expired 8x10 film - just wondering how it turned out.
Kind regards,

Your models have moved!! (Or one of them did) how dare they! :)
I like both, I suppose it was a question of either the sky being blown out or the rocks being too dark, I suppose it could have been pulled to reduce contrast? but I'm not really familiar with how Velvia handles push/pull. Or even if E-6 behaves the same way with contrast with push/pull. I'm a Newb when it comes to any 'advanced' color work.

First time poster here. Just got started shooting in early 2013 when I was gifted a Calumet 4x5 Monorail. I have since bought a Crown Graphic for the portability and have enjoyed taking that out into the field to do landscape shooting.
This is an image shot with the Crown Graphic and a Nikkor SW 90mm f/8 lens on Kodak Portra 160, which was then developed in the Tetenal kit. It would have been shot at f/32 and probably somewhere between 30 seconds and 1.5 minutes for exposure.
The scene is on the Eno River, just north of Durham, North Carolina and is one of the best locations for rapids/flowing water in this part of the state that I've found! On the cold November morning that I made the image, I was out by myself for quite some time and then about halfway through my shoot, a digital shooter came by and I got the classic "Shooting film?! There's not many of you guys left!" A humorous moment to say the least. I think this guy fired off a couple hundred shots hand held during the time he was there. :D

Thanks. I double-checked and the edge markings say "Fuji RDP" which I believe is Provia, although this was shot over twenty years ago so there may have been some color shift in the interim. It was also a bit over exposed and the resulting lack of harsh contrast and absence of deep black shadow areas makes it look less chrome-like.
J.
EDIT: My color-balancing skills are pretty rusty since I mostly shoot and scan B&W these days. It's possible that I unintentionally introduced some extra warmth in trying to eliminate the magenta cast present in the transparency even though I was aiming for a neutrally balanced end result.
