The recent government shutdown & park closures kept me on the logging roads, such as this one, just outside Mount Rainier NP.
The signs of logging can be distracting, but the scalping, I think, intensifies the experience of gazing up at the sublime volcano, and its diverging glaciers.
This is just outside the Park's western boundary, about 8 or 10 miles from the volcano's summit (by line of sight), and 4,500 feet in elevation. A pleasing perspective, I think: not too close, not too far, not too low, not too high. I had hoped for broken skies, or slope-kissing fog, but no luck this early evening.
Overall, Mount Rainier cradles more than 25 glaciers, and their erosive activity is far outpacing volcanic activity (i.e., the mountain-building type), robbing the volcano, century by century, of a once-higher altitude, and a once-conical shape. Its so craggy now, it looks like a different mountain from each side, as additional images by people here show. Part of its charm for me.

Two slightly different views of "Abandoned exercise station #8" on a near-by passive recreation trail. I was originally walking along, attracted simply by the texture of the fallen leaves, and then noticed the slightly off-trail pull-up bar slowly aging. Both images are negative scans from 4x5 HP5+, developed PMK, taken with Canham DLC & Rodenstock 150mm.

I have a curious question: What happens in this year with many post about Acadia NP? I didn't see that many post about it few years ago say since 2007/2008, so is it something unusual this year there?

My answer has nothing to do with the forums... In general people are going to places that are nice but cheaper, Maine is one of those places.

I was experimenting with some color negative conversion software I was thinking of buying (and probably won't) and scanned up this image from last fall in the eastern Sierra. For some reason, I had never scanned this one before.
I figured as long as autumn is around the corner, this might be a nice little warm-up. Fall is getting closer and closer.

I think the horizontal helps emphasize the winding shape of the dune from left to right. while the vertical format would make this movement more confined.

No this is Provia. Ektar (shot as a second-sheet/backup/printable), once printed, is even more contrasty & colourful than this and I'll post a scan of the print once I make it.. The sky is dark because I was using a CPL and it was taken at about 3pm in mid-winter.

Under the trees, yes. But with any more exposure, the yellow flowers completely lose detail and saturation. I have another sheet shot at +0.5 and it looks bad.

one is shot the other day, 4x5, 90mm caltar, provia 100. processed this at home with some old chemistry, got some weird color cast.
I think your water is too alkaline, make sure you're using distilled water to mix with your chemistry and do the first and second rinse if your tap water is too basic.

Walking to Swirlyville
An experiment in tilt with the lens wide open. It feels fairly normal as long as your eye is centered on the family walking across the bridge. The plane of focus is roughly along the handrail, but it isn't a flat bridge and the boards swoop in and out of focus.
I don't know how I feel about such obvious tilting and shifting. It might be too pictorial for my taste, and it prevents the eye from wandering around the image comfortably.

It's very neat anyway, I think that it has good and bad points, you're right it does prevent the eye from wandering around the scene, and has that dizzying effect went to much is out of focus, however in the same right it also brings your eye directly to the subject matter at hand, just like this kind of thing is supposed to, and leads your eye that way rather than forcing it there directly from the beginning, so it has a nice affect overall.

Alright, no more shiftiness and tiltiness. A nice, normal shot of a wooden bridge in the Japanese garden, Newport News Park. The light through the trees was really pretty, which made it hard to keep the bridge as the central focus. I wound up shooting it from the backside. The standing stone behind the bridge is actually the back of a dedication plaque (coastal VA isn't known for its glacial erratics).

Thank-you, Stone. I'm still undecided. I think it either needs less or more swirliness. I might go back and try adding in some swing to isolate things horizontally.

Thank you! I sold the piece(s) to a couple who are going to put it in the dining room of their (amazing!) new home. I went over with them to the home site and took a look at the room and talked about framing and lighting. Because the wall is finished concrete, the tintypes get lost in the tones, which ruled out a frameless approach. I think they are going to put it in one BIG frame (probably plexi museum glass) floating each piece with about an eighth inch separating the plates. That's the current thinking anyway. On the opposing wall will hang a slice of a giant sequoia tree with something like 750 rings. With a custom table made from the same fallen tree. It should be a stunning room when all completed. I think Sunset Magazine is already planning a story on the house (uber energy efficient). Anyway, I'm happy they're happy.

Autumn trees that still show summer green are a favorite subject of mine – color film or black and white.
The competing colors add a nice tension to the surrounding stillness.
Looks like the smaller plants show the same process of change...

This reminds me of the forest roads in many of my mountain landscapes – the roads I've traveled "to get up here." In many favorite areas, it's not always easy to exclude forest roads from the image, so composing them in an interesting way is a good skill to have.

Thanks guys!
Jerry, I'd say 95% willpower and commitment, the other 5% is luck for the great light. I'll agree on the similarity between the two of them. The weather conditions looks to be the same as well, but the light in my image is different. I'll admit that I am a big fan of AA's work and I may have inadvertently made it similar in tones and mood, but the image represents what I felt and saw when I pressed the shutter. I'm now jealous of your original Clearing Winter Storm print. I wish that I one day can see an original AA print up close and personal.

Stay on the lookout for traveling AA displays. If they're properly illuminated, it'll make your day! I bought my print while at his 1966 workshop (the first of four). As workshop participant, we were offered 25% off his usual price, so I got it for 160 USD (that's not a typo, only one zero), together with one other 8x10 print. I never intend to sell the Clearing (although we all know: if the price is right ...). It's on the wall as a daily reminder/target of possible print quality, framed/matted as he would have. It hangs in my living room amongst my best work. When we remodeled our home, I had the walls in this room painted a middle gray to match a gray card. When guests come I frequently get a "Wow, this looks like Ansel Adams" from those who are familiar with him (most of the world is). I tell them "a couple are his." They usually say "Really? Which ones?" I say this not to boast, but merely to say that I'm coming close occasionally.

I've recently found a norwegian half-dome as well, in a valley. This valley also has a river. The main difference between this valley and Yosemite is the power lines and houses. I wish they were not there.

You're exposure is really great in these, question, what film/dev if I might ask? And how do you choose to meter?

I used Ilford delta 100 rated at iso 50 and Ilford ilfotec hc 1:31 for 3 minutes and 35 seconds - N-1 development. I don't remember exactly how I metered, but I use the zone system. I think I rated the dark wood areas at zone 3.

Yes, I think it is. It's the same syrup thing atleast. I haven't been around the film and development game that long, I was born into the digital era ... Somebody else probably will probably have better knowledge than me.

That's why my usual style is to embrace the presence of the powerlines as part of my subject :)
No powerlines in this one, however.

These subdued tones are really kicking it! I wish I could see one shot in Provia100f or any of the Velvia's to see the difference, if it's just the place with those tones, or truly how Astia handled color...

Kirk and ckagy, thanks!
Ckagy, it's an amazing wonderland, a cascade of lakes falling into one another in the form of little or big waterfalls,
water pressing through woodwork which sometimes gives one the impression of "swimming woods" ...
There's so much to discover there ...
Spring is also beautiful there, but from what I've seen, for me, autumn and winter are the most stunning seasons ...
Still have to do a winter session myself and looking forward to it!

Exactly ! The clouds are also different: smaller, lower, more subdued. Soon the snow will arrive and things will become more photogenic again.
Everything outdoor is more subdued this time of year in New England. The use of low contrast and simple scene expresses that. I wouldn't call it un-photogenic, but more difficult to show well.

Nice one Ken. This one has a quiet intensity about it. To me it looks like the trees either side of the main tree are standing back in amazement and the small tree in the front is bowing down as if to say "your majesty". I like this version but have you tried to aspenize a version of it? I squinted at it on screen and it lowered the low values a little and made separated the trees from the wood. It was just an idea. Hp5 and pyrocat certainly work well together.

I didn't say 3 Rodenstock i said 3 lenses, and i was looking at Schneider options only and ignoring Rodenstock, because also Schneider will discontinue some lenses as well and could be one of those i am looking for.
And i said expensive for film, 20 sheets for hundreds is a lot to me, ofcourse i can buy that, but i was expecting it to be less expensive than that, but i can understand as long those films are discontinued, so they raised the price for something as last stock.
I have normal Velvia 50 packs, i think i have 5 or 6 of those 20-sheets packs, so i am fine for long years, and i am planning to add Velvia 100/100F few just in case if i don't want to run Velvia 50 in few years quickly.

Sorry it was on the Rodenstock discontinuation thread lol.
Anyway yea I've decided on Velvia100 not the 100f as my next LF landscape film.
We shall see what the future holds, still haven't tested it enough yet.
Good luck!

Beautiful colors, what's the "QL" after Velvia 50 mean?
QL is Quick Load, and i agree it is beautiful colors

Nice one Dan!
I like how it mostly doesn't appear to be an IR shot, then you start to notice all the trees etc (or I did) like a reveal :)
Thanks Stone, I might be inclined to post more if I could get it past the postage stamp size and more like everyone else's, have not figured out how to do that...

No problem here, Dan. All I have to do is click on your image, then click on it again and I can make it much larger. But to do it "like everyone else's", I believe one does that by linking to an image on one's website or equivilent.

This is a fantastic image! That said, I have a question, you say this is Tri-X 400, but I was recently told this was never made in 4x5 sheet?
Thanks for clarification.

EOTS.
Regards and thanks for the good comment. 100VS I rate normally. I have found different lenses will give me slightly different exposure and will adjust accordingly. The 90 Nikkor F8, I must add 1/3 additional exposure to obtain correct results. With my other lenses, no change.
Please keep sharing your images. They are great.

that's right, there is no tri-x 400 in 4x5, I used roll film with a roll film back.

Thanks! Does that count as LF landscape since it's only 6x7? Or is it about the camera body? I'm not criticizing I'm asking because I don't know.

It is "Lardium" or "Merge" format, i also don't know what i can call it, but i think it is medium format because it is about the film at the end, so if it is on roll 6x6 or even 6x17 it is medium format but was using large format gear.

Hmm I was thinking that 6x12 or 6x17 would count as LF since it spans at least one direction "largely" lol.
It's a good compromise right? :)

I am going to buy a 617 format camera later, i would like to do some panos, wish if i have 5x7 or 8x10 then i can use a roll back of 6x17, i don't want to buy 4x10 LF then get 6x17 bcuz this will cost me more than just a body of 6x17 format.

I don't care what type of Back was on it. It was shot with a Chamonix 45N1 using a Schneider Symmar 135/5.6 and for me, that's Large Format.

If I shoot a 4x5 negative with my Chamonix Saber (= no movement) is it considered LF? but if I shoot with my ShenHao XPO45 using a 6x12 or 6x9 back is it more or less LF or not at all ?
Soon we might end-up like APUG where one is not sure if using a Jobo and a motor base is analog enough :D;)
I still need to confess that I was very dissapointed when the small format thread became the repository for testing shots with newly acquired digital cameras and phones :p
Cheers,

I really like APUG for many many reasons, but I have to admit, they are certainly persnickety and often a pain with regards to the "acceptable" rules, sometimes I get really frustrated and often confused about what's ok and what's not, glad you guys are more accepting, now I can post some IR shots I took with my 6x7 cambo back, I was under the impression those were NOT ok...
Acadia National Park, Precipice Trail Peak overview (I believe).
Toyo 45a 90mm Schneider f/8
1/30 @f/16 w 77mm B+W 92 IR filter
(which I'm actually selling the IR filter $50 off list price BTW and only used twice, bought new from B&H in January, so $110).

"For the purposes of this forum, we define "large format" as being essentially 4x5, or larger, sheet film. We do, however, allow what would otherwise be considered "medium format" sizes, IF exposed in a view camera (e.g. with a roll-film adapter), technical, or old-style press camera (e.g. the various Graphic cameras)."
That is indeed very clear and settles the issue for good with a modicum of acrimony.
Cheers,
Luc
Thanks! Does that count as LF landscape since it's only 6x7? Or is it about the camera body? I'm not criticizing I'm asking because I don't know.
It is about the camera body (view cameras with movements) -- as per the founder of this forum...with Speed Graphics, P&S cameras using 4x5 or larger, and such grandfathered in.
Roll film adapters of LF cameras also allowed and dedicated, no-movement 6x17's not considered LF.
So it goes. Below is a 6x7 roll film image -- Calumet rollback on a Gowland PocketView 4x5. Photo: Early morning (before the flies got too bad), Gums, NSW, Oz., circa 1995, Portra 160 VC if I remember right. Film commercially developed, printed by me (RA4).
Sorry for generating such a loud debate...
