Could it be that the church IS ACTUALLY leaning?
I have a shot of a church in Vermont that looks like it's leaning like that. But I had everything leveled, based on the bubble levels on my camera. A few weeks later, I happened to be in the town where the church leans. I had to know...so I walked up to the church and put my small level on the side.
The sucker actually does lean quite a bit.
Yes, sometimes you have to trust your own methods. I'll be back there one day with my level and see, but this one almost has to be leaning as well.
This one is from a few days later in the Dolomites. Unfortunately I didn't bring Velvia on our holiday, because I was afraid it might get cooked in the car, so I had to stick with black and white. Which was a shame, because the colors of this lake are brilliant. You are not allowed to leave the path though, so a really strong composition is not really possible.

The earth DOES move around, particularly in hilly terrain, and probably has moved since the church was built. Ask anyone living in southern California, where I once lived. Once I drove around a bend near the coast and could see the newly-painted white centerlines ahead were very straight, but the next time I rounded that same bend not long after the stripes were undulating.

Last time I was there, i'd gone to photograph the old mill stones and hopefully a sunrise. Got there whilst it was still dark, and just as the sun started coming up the fog rolled in and it started snowing. Hid under a rock overhang for two hours wishing I was better dressed and when it eased up a little I ran back to the car and went to Hathersage for breakfast.
A pretty normal day in the Peak District!

Bruce I know that very feeling, in fact I think I know the exact spot you've cowered under if you mean the well known spot at the south end of the crag. The shot above is about 1-200 yards northwest of there.

For me, landscape is until now, the most difficult subject to do...
Give me naked girls any day......:o
However, I certainly would like to do more landscapes, as the challenge appeals to me.
I have only a few images to show, due to my lack of success  , but here they are...
Hey, nothing wrong with sneaking in a few naked Danish girls in the landscape!!!
You will be needing "assistants" lugging around all that LF gear. A ++ situation!
Did you see that documentary on Weston that's around youtube somewhere.... that's what I am talking about....

Not sure where to post this. Elsewhere we were discussing Poco's and I looked at my 4X5 Premo and noticed an image on a plate in a holder. I definitely did not take the image and who knows how old it is. I pulled the DS and there it was. The only plate of 4 with anything resembling something. The image seems set or fixed without processing.
So I shot a pic of it and tortured it in PS.

Does Nathan think he is some kind of Jedi Knight waiving that pentax spotmeter around like that.
You know I would vote Nathan to take stills of the upcoming Star Wars series using 4x5 film. Can we start a petition? He might even know big George who I hope would still have some influence.

All kidding aside, this is a beautiful image Nate. When my kids bought various Star Wars books, it appeared that no stills were used but rather poor quality copies of film footage. It always occurred to me that they should have considered taking LF stills throughout the process to enhance the characters and scenes. Hence my comment. I hope no offense was taken as none was intended. In fact quite the contrary.
I enjoy your work.

I also have a Nikkor-w 150 and 180 ,But generally, contrast and color saturation is very low compared to the Schneider lens. Do you have this problem? Usually, color slides is poor. In case contrast of color is highly saturated in German lenses.

I´m very surprised to hear this. In my very early years in LF my first option was Nikkor lenses because I had Nikkor lenses from my very early days in photography, and I got stunning results with them. Once in large format I found Nikkor lenses very sharp but more contrasty than I would like, so I choose the German way, but I reccognice that some LF Nikkors are true master works of optical art. If you like sharp and ultra saturation contrast color images á la Americana, (I love this kind of imagery althought it´s not my first choice) you should use LF Nikkor lenses.

The appeal of Nikkor lenses to me is a more "natural" rendering of color, perhaps with a bit more emphasis on the blue range which I prefer. The schneiders produce saturated colors with a different look (at least to me). Clearly the Schneider APOs and XLs produce amazing sharpness. I have no experience with the APO Sironar S lenses. Perhaps the Nikkors are not as saturated. Others may have tested them head to head. I have not.
If you look at the work of Jack Dykinga of the years (he has produced many books here in US), he moved from Nikkors (in combination with some Fuji and Rodenstock) to Schneiders and one can see a change in the overall saturation and color. But this may be in part due his almost exclusive use of Velvia after a time.
I think the choice of film contributes to the amount of saturation. I prefer Velvia with the Nikkors. Also note that I found the Aztec Premier scans very sharp but sometimes density and saturation were not correct, meaning dull. The three images above on my screen look much duller than the original chromes and prints from the scans. When I am in control of my scans with the V750, I get more accurate color and satuation too.
Thank you.

I'm agree with you. In color transparency film based photography, the film choice is essential to get the final results you like, because each film has its personality in a more pronounced way than B/W films (unless in "straight shots", without working in the lab).

I have , addition to Nikon Lenses , Schneider lens super angulon47XL , super angulon65/5.6 , super angulon75/5.6 , super angulon90/5.6 , symmar-s100/5.6, apo-symmar210/5.6 and sironar-N 135/5.6 .As well as Fuji velvia film, also shot on Kodak film . But I found that it makes a very poor color . Or maybe my lens, it is . This is also not related to the scanner. It can be seen in the original slide film . Of course your images have good colors . But I do not know, original film is the same modes . Or you've edited it .I think that coating and formulation the German lenses, causing color is saturated. I also have experience with my Hasselblad Lenses .

Yep. I see people doing something, set up my camera (by which point the original people have left), then wait for more people to do the same thing. At places like this there's two typical reactions to the camera:
"Can I go over there? I don't want to interfere with your picture."
"Oh, yes, I'm not quite ready, go ahead."
And then, ignoring me, they get in position, I'm ready, and I take the picture.
-or-
"Say, how old is that camera?"
"It's less than two years old."
"Oh. ..."

Hi Daniel! It's still a bit toasty up here! Same as LA. Humid and hot. D.R thermometer is showing 80F out there at 8:12pm. We've had a lot of wind these last few days too. I'm ready for winter! I hope it's a snowy one! :-)

Very nice and incredible colors.
Nguss, that is quite nice. Did you use a GND filter? Honestly, I haven't ever liked Ektar, but my images never look like that, color-wise and exposure-wise (that is, if you didn't use a GND. Off-hand, I'd assume you would need a 3-stop one for that image?).
What ISO do you rate it at? Someone once told me to try it at ISO 200, which I was hesitant to do.

Thank you all for the really kind comments. I was quite amazed at how it came out personally as the light at the time was not great, so seeing it when I got it back was a nice surprise. I think I missed the best of the light setting up and trying to decide whether to use LF or digital (doh). Corran I rated the film at 100 and used a 2 stop grad to bring the sky down from +4 to +2 (as I thought I would meter it as I would Velvia 100).

Here is an image taken in Zion a couple of years ago. Finally did a quick scan with my Epson 750 to see how it would look. I was lucky enough to be in Zion during a snowfall. Managed several images before the snow disappeared, and that can be very quickly. What surprised me this particular morning was the fact that I seemed to be the only photographer out photographing. At least I didn't see anyone during my morning shoot. This image was taken at the Temple of Sinawava and the standing rock formation is called The Pulpit. This was taken with my 8x10 using my Nikkor 450 (I think) on Provia.

Actually I find that the best images are when the weather is changing :-) Which probably happens every few hours in the north of Scotland. Just have to get to a pub in between for smoked salmon and a good Islay malt.
Ok whiskey for Aran and Islay for Arran. It looks like both islands are smashing.

Smoky Mountain Sunrise
I don't know why, but sunrises always surprise me. Always. I could be watching the sky change colors for an hour, but actually seeing the sun crest over the horizon always seems to catch me off guard. If I'm shooting, I get a burst of adrenaline...better shoot quickly, I'm running out of time!
Last month was no different. My original intention was to shoot the entire morning on film. Alas, I'm still too chicken for that! And so, while I was busy capturing the best light with my digital rig, up comes the sun...out of nowhere! I quickly calculated my exposure and clicked the shutter. While I'm disappointed that the best color occurred just before this image, I'm still happy with the shot. Metering large format film while looking into the sun is not easy! And next time you sneaky sun, I'll be ready! But probably not...

Alan,
Beautiful picture of the Smoky Mountains sunrise. I know you took it in the last few months, but for me, a native of the Carolinas, the image said "winter." I think that feeling derived from the cool blues and the bare trees on the left. But growing up I saw winter sunrises with those same mix of cool and warm colors--and frost on the grass.

That is a pretty awesome picture for a near miss. In fact, if I could miss and still get one as good as this one, I'd be tempted to claim it as a happy accident. A metheod that might work would be to meter it just before sunrise, and set the exposure half way between that reading and the one you got for this one.

Excellent! Great detail and very strong, graphic comp.
Thanks for the comments/compliments. Erik - a friend just gave me The Negative (paperback) a couple weeks ago, but I don't remember anything like that on the cover! (I'm not at home now, so can't look at it.) It seems like the books in that series have a variety of cover images, depending maybe on hardback vs. paperback or which edition? Or maybe I'm just not that observant... :D
But I think you are referring to his image from the Oceano dunes, which I find interesting in its dissimilarity to the zillion images the Westons made there. If any of you like B&W dune images, the book "Dune" of Edward and Brett's dune images is a must see/have - it is actually almost too much, in terms of the number of stellar images.

some very lovely photos being shown here!!!!! But jp498, you need a bit more depth of field.
Thanks Kevin; I didn't try to get the last one in depth-of-field focus. I like layers in photos rather than the f64 look.
Pinhole could get it all in focus and might look cool too though. If I ever build a pinhole, this spot isn't far from home, so I'd be back.

I would think that Speed Graphic has a tilting front on it, doesn't it. A bit of tilt would take care of the near far focus.
My other speed graphic has the tilting front for that purpose. It'd still be tough to get them all in focus at this particular composition.

I like these two, specially the second one for the graphic line pattern. For that effect I do believe the depth of field is spot-on. I also like the first one, but to be honest the first thing I see is not the texture nor the rocks, but the shadow. The shadow has the shape of a lion head with the mouth slightly open. Because it is what stands out for me I then have to make an effort to look for the textures and forms. It works nice though.

I bought Ektar but since 3 years ago i never done color neg on LF, i did 5 sheets only 2 with slide and 2 B&W, the lab i use for color processing told me they don't process color negatives until i send them enough amount such as 15 or 10 minimum, so that i didn't shoot with Ektar i have.

Thanks both. Professional it is a pity that you were unable to use the Ektar you have, I am at the moment finding it a very decent colour neg. Paul Caponigro's son John Paul Caponigro attended the talk and had a camera set up on a tripod: I presume he recorded it in part or full. You could probably contact him and ask. Paul showed slides and the lights were dimmed for much of the talk, but I wouldn't be surprised if a modern camera was able to record it all.

A tall Ponderosa at break of day (Washington state).
My WA lens (w/ level camera + max front rise) reduces the gigantic tree’s real-life stateliness, its quiet nobility in this setting, or so I recall thinking as I composed – not being able to fully capture these traits, but taking the shot anyway.
-----
But the shot will give an idea what the dry (East) side of the N. Cascades looks like – open forest w/ restricted but pleasant sightlines. A landscape fun to hike off trail w/ map, compass, camera. Easy to hike through, lots of lakes, very fun. Mid-September = no mosquitoes. You might not always see black bears, cougars, and martens through the trees, but you get the feeling they’re watching you!
