Thank you all. I have only used 6x17 for a few months and was really into it, but I always forget how to compose a panorama and then all of a sudden catch the bug again. I shoot mostly 4x5 now, but in a few months I might shoot only panorama's again.

I had a look at your website the other day, Folker. Beautiful work. I really enjoyed it, very inspirational. And it gave my parents a good tip, I showed them your shot of the waterfall at Glen Orchy, they will be near there in the summer. So, thanks!

I don't think they'll let me move the bridge :D

There's a lot of nice photos to be had along this little stretch of river. Still got a few i'm working on.

Would also love to see some of your pictures printed and framed and hanging on my wall. Lived in Australia, on the Gold Coast, for a while. Spent a lot of time photographing around QLD and NSW. Such beauty i seem hard to find here in England. Unfortunately it was before i got into large format. A reason to go back i think!

I like the composition and the way you've seen the subject matter but not the way it's been printed. For my tastes it needs more contrast especially in the highlights. When I look at your excellent "b&w - outdoor" prints on your web site I don't see anything else printed like this. So why this one? Not that everything should be printed the same way if a different way works, this particular way just doesn't work well for me. Perhaps your idea was to make a moody print but to me it doesn't achieve that, it just looks like a flat print. But I recognize that I'm viewing it on my monitor, I'm not actually seeing the print. Perhaps the actual print looks a lot different. Or perhaps we just have different ideas about how this print should look. And since it's your print, not mine, I'll shut up.

Hi Brian,

I appreciate the comments and agree completely. This neg was unknowingly underexposed and not compensated for when developing. The resultant neg is really flat. This took a lot of curves in Photoshop to get this much out of the scan. This one won't make it onto my website for the reasons you've stated. I can pull the highlights out more, but it starts to get pretty ugly. I liked the subject matter enough to post it here, though. I managed to forget to pull the dark slide on the second, more "perfect" composition, so this was all I got. I was and am bummed!

Based on a comment on my Hwy 17 West Texas image posted earlier, I decided to rescan the neg and work a little harder to try and pull more life out of the image. There were actually two issues with this shot, the underexposure/underdevelopment was one and the second was that I should have used TMY-2 here, not Arista which has a terribly narrow latitude. Arista seems to work much better for me in the studio than in the field, unless the lighting is really flat.

Anyway, changing some of the scan settings on my 4990 and working with narrower and more numerous tone curves allowed me to get a little more from the negative. This still won't make it to my website, but it does look a little better than the first post.

By the way, nice couple of images, Dadan!

The Alabama Hills were named for CSS Alabama. When news of the Confederate warship's exploits reached prospectors in California sympathetic to the American Civil War Confederates, they named many mining claims after the ship, and the name came to be applied to the entire range.

Harley has convinced me to try a B&W version of this original color chrome. He has sent me a version by email for inspiration so herewith is my first attempt at doing this. I've opted to render on the dramatic side simply because I remember those angry clouds boiling up over the Sangre de Christos while the forground was still illuminated by a low western sun.

Thanks. I went out there at about 5am a few weeks ago to take some photos because it's a beautiful area. Then I went in to play a round of golf afterwards. I told the guy I was the one out on the course taking photos and he got really excited. Now I've been back a few times and he wants me to do the photos for their virtual tour and they may buy some prints. Just a well manicured course in a beautiful area. I've wanted to photograph golf courses for a while. Many have nice landscaping and whatnot and, to me, look a lot better than the parks in the area.

Hi Greenspeed, this was just around sunrise.

Vallantho, if you were going to get anything drum scanned as you are in the UK I would definitely recommend Tim. It is hard to show how underexposed the photo was, and I am amazed at the detail he managed to get out of the scan. I am thinking I must get more drum scanned myself, so it ended up being a bad idea sending this one off in the end as I was too impressed with the result.

Thanks Andreios and Harley. Love that place. Had a fabulous time. Nothing like a solid week of nothing but work. Hard to beat that. I didn't hotel or eat out. Just ate my own bad sandwiches and drank water and worked.

I've posted this on the Shiprock Thread in Travel but can't resist posting here as well. Under the nose of the famous wing on the Northeast Corner of Shiprock. Windy out on the plain. I was in a little wind shadow but right around the corner it would blow the camera over. Almost too much to clamber around in! Probably yellow filter. I'm a noticer of shadows and work around Shiprock with the sundial effect in mind. Deardorff 5X7 and 120 Super Angulon. HP5 in Xtol. Slightly reduced negative development. The contrast I'm seeing looks fine. Take a look at the landscapes of Morley Baer, particularly those in his book Stones of the Sur (http://www.amazon.com/Stones-Sur-Robinson-Jeffers-Photographs/dp/0804739420). Morley printed with bit of a heavy hand. But his images are stunning.

Yes - we sense these nuances in the field, and wonder if they can be photographed. One reason I like shooting with film is the delay: we can't know for sure until after a positive image has been made. Sometimes we get lucky and the feeling comes through.

I think it is a pinhole leak or a leak from the film holder. I've patched the bellows with tape in every corner now, and checked for pinholes. There are none. What do you mean by holding the sky back? Lighter or darker? I've thinking about dodging the top of the sky a little bit, to add a little brightness. I'll see when my contact printing frame arrives.

Holding back the sky is dodging, although to me, dodging is used more for specific areas, I'm talking about the whole sky area of the picture. You may have expressed it a little better by saying "to add a little brightness". I don't think you could have had that much contrast if you had pinholes in the bellows. Probably the cut film holder. Could be the tape on the hinge
Thanks!

Great image with dramatic clouds. I like the contrast, maybe it could be printed a little lighter in general. But I don't trust my screen, so I really can't judge it.

Could be the tape on the hinge
The stray light shows on the lower left corner of the negative/print. That means it's the upper right corner of the film holder where the dark slide is. Could be an old light trap leaking when you pull the dark slide.

Although I usually don't like it when we "explain" photos, this one has several contrasting elements which work harmoniously and naturally. There is a sense of distance but a lot of detail. There is coarse texture in the trees but smoothness in the water. There is stillness in the trees but movement in the water. Most attractive of all perhaps, is the feeling of presence and a subtle luminous atmosphere. The slight sense of distance makes things just out of reach, so we feel like we're spying on something intangible. It's quite nice :)

I was experimenting with some color negative conversion software I was thinking of buying (and probably won't) and scanned up this image from last fall in the eastern Sierra. For some reason, I had never scanned this one before.

I figured as long as autumn is around the corner, this might be a nice little warm-up. Fall is getting closer and closer.

Harley,

That one came out nicely. Did the Color Perfect not do a good job, or did it not offer anything over and above your current workflow for converting color negative film?

Corran
14-Jul-2013, 17:29
I'd also like to know what you didn't like.

I tried Color Perfect and didn't like it either. I'm still struggling with some color neg film. Some emulsions just snap right to perfect color with simple levels adjustments, some don't, not sure why.

Harley Goldman

I tried Color Perfect. While it seemed to work decently, I had just as much success using the color balance feature in EpsonScan. That got me pretty darn close and I planned to use PS to fine tune it. The image posted above required no color adjustment beyond what I did in EpsonScan (which was a significant amount).

Great, Harley, thanks. Since I used Color Perfect with my first color neg conversion and it took about two minutes to get pretty darn close, I was impressed. Not having any other methodology, I was (and still am) impressed with it. After four conversions with Portra 160, I find all I need to do before pressing the "convert" button, is to reduce the saturation and add a slight s-curve to increase contrast. The conversions have come out nicely do far. I haven't yet tried any complicated lighting which may throw the program a curve.

I'll have to try doing a straight color neg scan with the 4990 and see how close it comes.

I find that my best results come from scanning as a positive, then doing manual inversion + curves in Photoshop. I hope my results speak for themselves. I find it less tedious than having some software do a mediocre job that I end up having to tweak anyway to get the picture where I want it.

Good to know. We were in a rush to get home from the middle of CA to Portland, so the straight (and much less scenic) I-5 was a necessary route. I never seem to get over to the south eastern part of the state. I've lived in Oregon over ten years and still haven't been to Crater Lake!

So hauling around myself in my lovely rubber boots, 8x10 , tripod, backpack with gear and trying hard not to scream every time me leg would umph in whole thing or tripod would sink down yet another feet... That was a bit dodgy right there :) But i still managed to wonder around this stuff for few hours. And i will try it again :)

As others have said, very fine photographs. I'm curious though - why the blue filter? Since there's typically so much blue in shadows the blue filter would be expected to lighten the shadows (and, obviously, the sky if it was blue) and reduce the contrast. Without seeing the original scene and so not knowing the colors I would have thought darker shadows (not black, just darker) in 2 of the 3 would have been very effective.

Sill have to find out why the church seems to be leaning to the right in every photo we took that evening. I usually level my camera before composing, I must have done it here as well. Even in the handheld shots of both my girlfriend and myself it is always leaning slightly. Maybe the church is just playing a trick on us or maybe the force was just too strong that night.

Sweet light, with the shadows, intersecting lines and nice sky, a beautiful image. The church might be tilted a bit, but what the heck.

Thank you both, very kind. It is starting to grow on me. The intersecting lines were what drew me to this vantage point. There was another from below by the side of the road. The light was better from that angle, but only the mountain in the background made the composition a little too simple for my taste.

Could it be that the church IS ACTUALLY leaning?

I'm not real keen on this image, but it illustrates the effect of wildfire smoke in our region. Crater Lake, August 1st:

Interesting perspective. Makes the city appear forlorn, empty and perhaps unreachable. and all those things may be true.

Empty fortress, no visible life or lights.

Sadly cool, even cold.

Randy, actually when this is enlarged you see the pinhead size lights through out the city.. If you look to the far left you can see the old Ambassador Bridge crossing the Detroit river.. I hit this spot early before the sun had a chance to break through the clouds behind me. Very gloomy weather kind of just hung there

Ben, I admire your Point Lobos image. Can you tell me what iso, temp and time you used? My HP5+ with pyrocat hd 1;1;100 are pretty flat.
Thanks for any input.

Barry, I recently found a couple boxes of negatives that I exposed 4 years ago and am in the process of developing just now. I do not know for sure but I think I rated the HP5+ at ISO 400. I developed it in Pyrocat HD in Glycol; 1:1:100 at 70 degrees F. for 10 minutes in a JOBO CPP2 at the slowest rotation. I am scanning the negatives with an Eversmart Supreme and adjusting tonality in Photoshop and Silver Effects Pro2. Initially they do appear somewhat flat, but there is wonderful highlight and shadow detail present in the negatives.

Wish I could be more help, but I can't find my notes on the exposures.
