Lots of good images lately.
I don't post much in the way of photos here because I don't like posting images that are not my best and I don't like posting neg scans since I still print the old way. Here is one though from 2009 that I just found squirreled away on my hard drive. Neg scan.

Due to my lack of an wide angle lens, I started with this series of composed photos when a more panoramic view is required. This one was made of 2 4x5 sheets of Ilford Delta 100, with the Rodenstock 150mm f/5.6 Sironar N, 0.9 Hi-tech ND Grad, developed in D-76.
Beautiful, nicely done!
This Canyon is called Cânion do Itaimbezinho, and it's located in the border between the two southern most states of Brasil, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

I have now spent 1 week and viewed every single page of this thread.
Thank you to all the contributors so much, I have learnt a LOT and been greatly inspired.
(in fact this thread is almost the sole reason I pulled the trigger and purchased a 4x5.)
You should all be so proud of the images you have created, I wish I could see more of them in person, printed beautifully large.
Thank you,
Dan

Hello Victor,
This is an incredible pair of shots. I must say, that you are truly correct when you say it needs both shots to make the image. I tried looking at them in isolation, and the single shots do not add up to the whole!
I like the way they are currently presented, however I will ask you, have you tried stitching them in Photoshop to make a single image? I am just curious if there is a reason you have chosen to leave them the way they are. (Not saying there is anything bad with the way they are currently presented! I still love it.)
Thank you,
Dan

Hi Dan, thanks for your comment!
Indeed, the two shots complete each other, giving a sense o cycle of water.
But I didn't try to stitch them, actually I think it can't be done since they don't overlap (also means that I can use all the area of the negative). My intention was it to be done this way to reinforce the feel of "window" to the landscape.
I've read your post about going through all the landscape pictures and purchasing a 4x5 camera and would like to say I'm a beginner in LF to (started this year). It can be very intimidating, but watching others pictures is a great way to learn, along with going out to shoot and making mistakes.
Cheers!

Thanks, the exposure was 1 second, witch I find is the best for capturing moving water in most cases. It's not possible every time, but in this case I got lucky.
Cheers!
George and Eskinazi,
Nice images, both. Of course if I were to hang them on my wall, visitors would gravitate to Eskinazi's, dismissing George's image as "just a rock." But there is a lot to look at there! I think most people just look at things quickly, recognize (or not) what is there, and move on (even if it is grand and striking). It is a shame that they can't spend more time with an image. And as for your presentation, Eskinazi, I keep thinking I should do that kind of thing, but it never seems to occur to me when I am "on location."

Indeed George's photo is great, that rock looks like a skull, great finding!
As for the presentation, I've realized that the limitations of large format (and of my one lens) actually added to the creative processes.

An old negative never printed before. 1999, I think. The East face of Shiprock. Printed it large on 20X24 and resisted making it too contrasty. Nice print. Deardorff 5X7 with a 210 Symar. The little white mark in the center is where some Ravens were nesting. In the print, you can see a raven sitting there. They were flying in and out and croaking away. I had to climb out to the end of the pulpit area, up and turn around and look back. Sporty.

This area of Shiprock is gorgeous in afternoon shade, full of incredible shapes and textures....but where to start and stop? Plus it's further away than you might think and there just aren't any level places in San Juan County.

Excellent image of the abandoned farmhouse. Everything in it contributes to the mood of desolation, and I include the power and telephone poles that mimic crosses in an old graveyard.

Looking West off the saddle between Shiprock and the North Buttress, (The Tugboat, to climbers). Just after sunrise. Never printed this neg until last week. Late 90s. Deardorff 5X7 and 210 Symar. Hope to be back there late May and want to climb that route and then go UP behind the White Tower on the North end. Looks like there is a pretty good slot back there...but fairly sporty area.

This has been a puzzle for 40 years...South Dike at Shiprock. I've shot up and down it a lot and tried to get something out of this crack in the corner as recently as last year. I was looking at negatives last week and got to cropping around on some much larger views....maybe I need to just work the crack, a little sky, a little talus slope. Morning sunlight.
When you face this area there are three distinct features- this crack, a big "eye" shape in the middle and a house shaped crack on the right. There is a big boulder in the fallen area that is great to shoot from giving you a little elevation. I thought about going wide and shooting all three in one shot. And you gotta pick your light. Morning comes roaring in, Late has a glare over the top. I took a 450mm Nikon in there last trip and tried to get just the corner crack, no sky. Too much wind. Camera movement.
Great place.

Been struggling with this sparse scene for years and just don't know how to handle it. Somehow I need to capture the desolation plus the warmth of the low bush blueberries in fall color. I like the contrast. This image along the Pineo ridge north of Cherryfield ME. The ridge is the end of a glacial moraine deposited under sea during a retreat of the continental icecap about 10,000 years ago. Glacial erratic boulders are scattered along the top of the ridge.

Well, as I see it, the image has four components, the cranberries, the rocks, the sky and the space. To me, the cranberries are the weakest part of the image, and don't necessarily work that well with the sky and space, in my opinion. I would prefer to see the cranberries in a more intimate scene. I like the top 4x10 portion of the image as a panoramic.
That of course doesn't agree with what you were striving for with the color contrast between the bushes and the sky, although one still gets some of that with the far patches of cranberries. It also doesn't maintain the 4x5/8x10 proportions that you favor.
Those are my thoughts. All that said, I have really enjoyed all of the images you've been posting lately. You have some lovely images, and seem to have been to a lot of great places!

h2oman, Before I read this I was thinking you might suggest a 4 X 10 landscape crop which I agree would be logical and I see I have a couple of older copies where I tried that. But I stuck with the 4 X 5 original for a large print to preserve the blueberry bush color which was pretty dramatic - pure sentimentality I suppose. But no matter how I transfigure this image I don't get the feel of what was there. Seems to be a lifetime project. BTW I've been working this ridge for more than 40 years and just can't seem to get the feeling I want.
I seem to see and crop pretty rigorously in the field so mostly end up with the 4 X 5 frame and I need to get over that. It forces a kind of artificial barrier to seeing which is often not useful. In retrospect I really miss the 5X7 format I used more than 20 years ago.

Both are well done. 'Homestead...' is wonderful. It looks like one could explore around there as long as the light is willing to cooperate.
If both are shown together, the gulls and the trees occupy and inhabit the same space in their respective photographs. Very fun!

So i'm here looking for all comment and critique on all aspects of photography, technical and aesthetic. It all helps.

It's a place i like to visit from time to time so i'll definitely be photographing it again. I think next time i might go down to the beach and use a wider lens to get a sense of the cliffs curving around the bay.
I'm fifty fifty on the people. I've got another photo taken from the same spot later on without people but by that point the shadow of the cliff i was stood on had fallen across the beach so i wasn't so happy with that one. I thought about cloning them out but in the end went with a let it be approach.
But i agree, next time from the beach i think.

Thanks. They happened to be just there. Added a nice perspective to the landscape.
Barnninny, Mandoman7, Peter, Vaughn, and Nana - Thanks for the nice comments on Seagulls and Homestead. I'm off to the darkroom rental this week, so I'll be curious to see how they print, or more accurately, if my neophyte darkroom skills can produce anything worth hanging on a wall.
Peter-The sparkle of the seagulls is what caught my eye, so I'm glad that seems to be a noticeable quality of the photo. "Stalking" the seagulls with an incoming tide and a rapidly setting sun with a large format camera was interesting, to say the least.
Vaughn - Thanks for pointing out the space similarities of the two photos. I hadn't really thought about that, but they actually may be shown together. And, if you ever get a chance to wander southeast Oregon or the Steens Mtn., Alvord Playa area, it's well worth it.

Shiprock from the West side looking over the West Dike. Bought a Nikon 450 just to shoot this shot but haven't ever printed it before. Right now I have it about 10X6 on a piece of 11X14. Might try it larger. Fairly easy to print, though I keep in mind I can always be fooled....

Splendid composition. As shown here the tonal range appears too compressed for me. Robert, is this a scanned silver print?
I see you enjoy working this rock since it permeates your work. Have you ever visited the Spanish Peaks just south of Blanca peak in southern CO? There are very similar dikes running toward the west peak and partway up the base of the mountain on the north and west sides south of La Veta. You can see these fairly clearly on the Google Earth image.

Here are a couple of images that I finally got scanned. Both are from Mono Lake. First one was taken a couple of years ago and I finally got around to getting it scanned. The image was taken at sunset and the exposure ran well over two minutes. I "dodged" the sky with my darkslide for about half the time. I didn't have a graduated ND filter with me, it was in another camera pack back in the car. Image was taken with Velvia 50 on an Ebony 8x10 with my trusty Fuji 300 5.6 which continues to astound me with its sharpness. The second one was also taken at sunset this past Feb. The wind was just howling, but I was able to get behind one of the tufa formations just enough to block the wind, although at the time I was taking the shot I was "praying" to the photo gods to let the wind subside. I really had not expected the image to be sharp, but it was. Again, the exposure on this one was somewhere around 1 minute. Taken on Velvia 50 with the 8x10 Ebony and the Fuji 300 5.6. Jim

pdmoylan, indeed it kinda looks that way. Actually the Astia rendered the scene less dramatic than the cold Oct. weather with late afternoon sun showed. Visually the actual scene was of higher contrast so here I squeezed as much as I could out of the toe and shoulder by selectively increasing the gamma at the end points. I think I managed 6 or 7 stops without looking too hoky.

I'm thinking about selling mine too. I don't like the way the files look. If I sell it I will go full analog. I don't feel the need for a digital camera, but it's a bit more convenient than my 4x5.
I now use digital only for pictures of cameras...
Good luck selling a D800. Pretty hard to do at any price. I sent mine to KEH.
I still like Nikon, but fooled me once. It will be awhile until I play digital one upmanship again. It is a mature genre. Only Pros need better and better.

I have the D800E, so it might be easier to sell that. I'll have to think about it though. I don't want to do anything rash.
Want to trade for my old D700 + some cash? I love my D800E.
I discovered that Lightroom was buggering up my D800 colors. After I fixed the profile in LR the camera really shines.
Keep the D800E. Mine was the D800.
I think Nikon NOW has eliminated the anti-alias screens all together. Next the menus... and U1 & U2 are certainly needed.
I had a shoot where I could not get the darn thing reset to zero and had to go to my backup D7000. Pissed me off, big time. I almost smashed it, but then I would have lost a great lens. I am enjoying my F5 once again. So nice. I see B&H is still selling F6, I should have bought that...

Lol, got me Randy!
Truth be told, I haven't used my digitals for anything but commercial work or when I'm teaching, to show what I'm doing. But I continue to be so disappointed in the D700 when shooting it side-by-side. Not only in resolution, but also color, tonality, of course DR, everything. With a typical RAW file from the D800 I can pull just about anything out of it I want, even if it was way over/underexposed. It's like negative film, finally.
I never had my lost D700 side by side.
I have not given up on Nikon. I do like the new 70-200 VR f4 I bought for it. Works great on F5 and D7000.

thanks :) Well.. i had to try 4x10/10x4s, and i wanted to do short run to see how couple of wide angles work.. So you know.. Ran off to park, shot two sheets, 4 images.. tossed away one, didnt like it.
We've had two days of fires here lately. It's a landscape, though not majestic and beautiful. BUT...it's nature....

I took this image in Feb. I had such high hopes that the clouds would be great for sunset, but as usual, I was skunked. Taken with an Ebony 8x10 using a Fuji 300 5.6 on Velvia 100F.
Jim,
I might prefer that image to what you would have gotten with a red/orange sunset. I like the six horizontal layers and the palette of orange/brown and purple/blue, with the band of white sort of between (sort of because of the bit of blue/purple below the clouds).

The wall ahead of the sheep around the next corner- the one you can see edge-on, is really a terrific wall. Amazing how much the canyon has grown up on both sides these days. Russian Olive has taken over. The area around the base of spider rock is getting quite impassible. In this shot you can see the brush taking over the stream bed in 2009. It was much worse last year. Soon there won't be any open water in the canyon system.

I had no idea that the Russian Olive would take over like that, I guess all they need is some water. The photo below was taken around 20 years ago and there isn't a Russian Olive in sight.

Randy,
I have only done a few test pieces up to 24x30, but it will easily go as wide as my printer which means I can do a 44x56 (I think that is what it works out to.) Jim
I was just curious. I think it would look great, in large sizes. Some images need room.

I’ve been watching this tree take over canyon country for many years. Its yellow flowers are very pretty in the spring, and its autumn fruit is enjoyed by all kinds of birds. However, it’s so hardy, so successful – and spreads so easily – that we should all start saying goodbye to the native Cottonwoods and Willows that are being out-competed along canyon washes and creeks. These images are a great illustration of the on-going changes.
Very nice picture, I love the mood it conveys.

I kept thinking my level or GG was skewed – so I kept looking up to confirm it was the trees, not my camera. The leaning was, of course, what caught my attention in the first place, but I guess I had difficulty accepting it during the composition process. ;^) I also recall maxing out my Tachi’s front rise. I tend to think that this photograph looks natural in its perspective and in its slant. It is very nice. I also tend to think that level is great when you want it to be. But if the image that strikes your fancy involves tilting the camera thirty degrees, then by all means....tilt the thing.

Hi All,
Last week I hiked up to Nevada Falls in Yosemite NP with my Linhof MT and gear. I wanted to capture the falls in full flood - man it was impressive. I wanted to share these images with the forum - I believe I captured the power of falling water. The mist and wind generated from the falls made it a real challenge in getting the image. The posted images are just scans from my negatives - I am going into my darkroom tomorrow to work on printing the two images.

Thank you, Jonathan. I have to say, the challenge of a montage is hitting the tones and seams with a semblance of continuity. I've never tried it before. For sure a smaller group of plates forming a larger is tougher than a single large plate, at least based on my limited experience (over 4 days). Having said that, a single large plate sure has visual impact -- nothing to argue there. (and tough to do!) Ed

For what it's worth, you succeeded admirably. I can't even begin to imagine the logistics and effort of such an undertaking, but in this case it looks to be well worth it.
The next question is, how do you mount them all?

Ed, magnificent. They remind me of Delft scenes done this way, except they were pottery, of course. About 14" square plates, IIRC. They were grouted to the wall in my grandmother's sitting room in Rotterdam, ND. A lot of old dutch houses had these Delft landscape scenes done in this way. I even saw a coal burning stove in a house in Leiden done this way in 4" square tiles. It was something to see.

Been fooling with 4X5 pairs taken two stops apart to try to extend the DR a bit. Here is a tough one with white snow and very dark firs. This taken from the ski area across the valley from Lake Louise. TK45S on bean bags on a picnic table for stability. Impressive result for resolution. I can see the curtains in the windows of the hotel. Blessed with nice weather though with no wind.
Very nice.
Have you considered trying this with a single frame of C41? Say you shot it on Ektar exposed for the shadows, there'd still be plenty of detail in the highlights on the neg and trivially recoverable via scanning. You can then directly run your 16-bit-positive scan through the photomatix tonemapping and skip the whole rigmarole of combining multiple narrow-DR images to arrive at the HDR linear image for input to tonemapping.
Of course it means Ektar colours instead of Velvia colours ;)

Eight 16x20 plates. 4 days. Chamonix camera and Dallmeyer 21x25 RR. My friend/assistant went a little heavy on the sepia tone on his phone.

Ed,
You told me that you were going to Yosemite to shoot some landscapse and I did not expect this! It seems to me that you are discovering a new world everyday as an artist and and thanks for sharing this with us!

I looked at those plates about 5 times before realizing that everything is "backward." Duh!
I'd love to see them in person.

Image from 2004 when I was doing only chromes and B&W. You are correct that Ektar mostly solves the DR shortcomings of chromes. Recently I find it grainier than the chromes I use but given the limitations of a V750 scanner I think that's irrelevant. For me it's a bit more complicated working with neg. films but I'm working on it. BTW below is a 12X section (equivalent to a 36X48 inch print) of the hotel in that image. The resolution is limited by the scanner while examination under a microscope shows considerably more detail (some texture in the curtains or shades) in the chrome original. Perhaps worth a serious drum scan for the heck of it even tho a rather ho hum image.

Oh, so they obviously do focus. Just kidding. Good job at I bet a hectic environment.
LOL, sure they do focus. . . just wish I could know where! The poor guy I posted in portraits would have been a great shot if I'd nailed focus. But it could always be worse (again with the Speed and Petzval):

Since the images are backwards, would that be 20m to the right or to the left.? :)

I like this one a lot Nate.
I've been wanting to try a multiple shot panorama for a while. Unfortunately, I screwed up my metering and blocked-up the shadows pretty good.
Should have double checked my settings - oh well.

I like this one a lot Nate.
I've driven past that glacier I don't know how many times - it's difficult to photograph from the road due to the trees, but you can find the odd clear area on the other side of the road to get a 'vista' type shot. I may have to hike in - it looks interesting!

Apart from the shadows I think it is really strong. I really enjoy the tree being slap-bang in the middle of the composition.
One from the shores of Loch Etive, Scotland. I enjoyed driving down Glen Etive so much I came back to this spot three times that week, thinking the light would be better that day. The light sometimes worked for me along the way, but by the time I had gotten near the end it went flat. Couldn't resist taking some shots anyway, because it is such a nice peaceful place to hang around.

I like this very much Bryan. Love the expanse of horizon and the compositional balance of the whole image.
Thanks! Trying to decide if it's worth doing more work on. Already spotted it like crazy - I think my chems are going south as there was lots of black specs everywhere, plus some weird lines - I'm not sure how they happened.

The intersecting lines in the middle are pretty nice, as are the blue and green colors. Try cropping the lower third off to lead the eye to the horizon.

I like how the light patches of sand in the foreground echo the shapes of the clouds, so I'd leave it uncropped myself.

The falloff from the lens could be exagerated much more to lead you in towards the water (increase contrast).
I think I would have preferred a wider lens approach perhaps (65-75mm) with more sky.
Cheers.

Hello All,
My first post here in the landscape forum. Pretty basic composition as I feel my way through the trials and tribulations of LF. Shot taken in South Lake Tahoe and horizon was quite smokey resulting in a very golden sunset. Of course, i did have an 81a on the lens also.
I don't have the ability to scan 4x5 film so this is a cropped 8x10 scan of the print which is actually 10x12 on Kodak Metallic Endura.

I really like this, the tones and textures are great in the soft light.
Thanks all for the thoughts. Obviously there are as many opinions as there are photographers!
This location certainly deserves a return trip, I'll say that.

I dig it, Bryan. Not sure I'd change a thing, but the wide-angle suggestion is worth a try, imho.

Have you been to the ruined jetty further down?
Thank you both. I'll probably print it later this week when I find time to work on it some more, but you'll have to come to Holland to see it. You're quite welcome to though.
No, I haven't been to the jetty. There were some diggers etc left on the path beyond the last parking and it was all dug up, I didn't know if I was even allowed passed there. So I stayed in the delta.
