Preston,
That's a beautiful image as is, but I think I would prefer it cropped to square, removing the bottom.
I dunno. The cliff wall being visible in the water identifies where this is in a way that intrigued me completely. I think that is my favorite part.
Rick "but what do I know?" Denney
I agree with Rick. It was the cliff reflection in the original that I prefer, however the other versions are also certainly quite special.

Thank you all for your comments on 'Reflections of Autumn'! It's interesting how we all see different things in a photograph, and those things tell us a story.
ElRooster: Your image at the top of this page is my favorite of the series. Good job!

This photo was taken twenty years (or so) ago, Martin, and I never was much for taking notes but I know a few of the details and can guess at the rest.
The film was 4x5 Ilford HP5+, which was released in late 1989, so this was taken after that. The location was somewhere in the Cedar Mountains, about 50 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT, the angle of the sun looks like mid-spring or (more likely) mid-autumn.
I've always been a a one lens/one camera kind of guy, it was probably a 210mm Nikkor-W or maybe a Fuji 150mm, I didn't use much else. If this was taken in 1990 or 1991, the camera was a Gowland Pocket View, later than that, an MPP, a Super Graphic or even the Korona 4x5 that I kept in the trunk of my car for several years.

A recent image from the Alabama Hills (mid-November).
I had recently critiqued a member's panoramic images, mentioning the difficulty of balancing the light across the entire image. So I attempted to see if I could work with 'unbalanced' light and still make the image work. Only semi-successful, I am afraid.

Vaughn, this is a real nice panorama. I like the composition, the tones, and the textures of the bark, the leaves, and the grasses. It all fits together. I can't tell that the highlights detract from it at all, or that they need to be tamed. I would love to see the full-sized print.

Thanks, Al. I can get pretty picky, LOL! I have the UV lights warming up right now -- will get my first print out in a couple hours, so we'll see if I can make an improvement. I lost detail in the highlights in a couple small areas I am hoping to tame (such as the piece of wood on the bottom of the image (near the middle)!

Laura and Vaughn, your work from the Alabama Hills is making me homesick. Many of my early East Side adventures were in the Mount Whitney area, so these images bring lots of fond memories.

Thanks, Preston. I was hoping to spend the night there (got there at noon), but my boys wanted to get on down the road to SoCal and hit the beaches. Hope to get back over there (without the boys) in February or so. Hope to hit Joshua Tree (if I swing far enough south to see my folks), Death Valley, Eureka Valley (depending on the health of the van) and Alabama Hills.

Thanks, Ross. I have the new print of it in the wash -- I'll have to wait until it dries down to know for sure, but it is looking pretty good (lots of dry-down with carbon prints -- blasted out highlights can dry down to perfection if one hits it just right).

SCM, beautiful image nice illustration of the change of habitat from the hill to valley, a very sharp delineation.
Also glad to note I'm not the only one who never took good notes and and can't remember all the details about locations and equipment of shots from 20 years ago.
I do however always remember making almost every image and can visualize the what the rest of the surroundings looked like, and who I was with, just not always the exact location.

Thanks, Jeffrey, Micheal and Jim. The water levels were near their highest - about twice the levels when I had been there earlier in the year with just a blackberry to take a few snaps - and there was a fine pattern of rain and drizzle that completely soaked both my equipment and me. I had to wipe everything after composing, and then wait for the condensation to clear while I shielded the lense from the water, before I could take the photograph. In truth, I wasn´t expecting anything decent to appear on the negative as I thought that condensation would ruin everything, and I had little confidence in focussing and exposure, but it looks as if the water vapour in the air has brought a soft glow to the image, which probably masks all of these errors.

I only recently started working with Large Format. I actually sold my only digital lens, a Carl Zeiss 21mm to buy into the kit I now have. It was well worth it. I feel that the work I make with my Calumet and my 150mm Rodenstock far surpasses that of my digital work. I am however quite biased, and I know that my work is not nearly as good as that I see in this thread. But being only 19 I have much time to develop and hone my skills.
This the photo I am the most satisfied with. This was developed in FX39 at n-2 and is a ilford delta 100.

Gary - Use the "share" pull-down menu on the Flickr image page; once the pull-down menu appears you'll see another pull-down menu allowing you to choose image size; once you've selected the image size, copy the BBC code; paste the BBC code in your LFF post. Cheers

Andrea: I know I posted in another thread that just saying "I love that image" is not useful as a critique ... but what a great image! I think the combination of the format plus your composition, with the path leading in from the left, and the counter-balancing darker area of tree and shrubs on the lower right, keeps my eye examining for more detail ... its an image that rewards careful viewing. Thank you for posting it.

This composition is really well done. I like the stairs positioning and the way it fades into the woods but we know its not the end of it. This could turn into a great black and white photo, using a yellow or orange filter maybe, but thats just because I love how BW can lead you to your subject, colors just distracts a bit. MHO.
Anyway, seems that you can visit new places now, no need to revisit this for a fourth tim =) , Amazing photo. Congrats.

Very well seen...very good use of subtle colors to add to the composition (yellow tones along the bottom and on the top) as well as the light itself. I like the way the darker tones on the right side holds one's eye on the image. Just excellent all the way around! Simple complexity...my eye travels up the path, but also up the draw -- and horizontally going from dark bush to dark bush, tree to tree.
I might have tried a polarizing filter to see if some of the blue light from the sky that is reflecting off the rocks and leaves could have been filtered out. But at the same time, the cool light off the rocks contrasts nicely with the warmer tones of the vegetation.
And yes, it looks like it would have made a great B&W image -- different, but perhaps not any better.

yeah... I agree. Different but not better.

Andrea, that image is wonderful... it has a rather painterly feeling to it, at least to me... might be because of the soft colors and lower contrast (?)... is it on a negative film?

Thanks Jiri and anyone else for the gentle feedback.
It is slide film, can't remember now if it is Provia or Velvia 100F, wet mounted and drum scanned here at home and some curve adjustments due mostly to the ageing of the film.
I've had it printed 70" wide and now am looking for space to hang it.
Here is another one from nearly the same place, this one is shot on a 6x17 roll film back.
Definitely a special place, most of the fun was just being there for a few hours with every kind of weather, enjoying the silence and the beauty all around.
The place is the oldest National Park in Italy, filled with animals like chamois, ibex, foxes and eagles.

Looks nice, MacReady.
I like this more the more I look at it. The trees are arranged well, which is always a challenge. The quality of light is very nice. What I did not notice at first viewing is the way the rocks are arranged around the base of the main tree, providing a nice balance. I'll bet this is really nice in a print large enough to really examine all the details. Not one of those images that knocks your socks off right away - it's more insidious than that. With music I often find the things like that retain my interest longer than something that sounds good right away, and I think this photo would have the same effect.

I think Mt Hood makes this photo much more interesting...something to discover within the image that is not immediately evident.
Nicely composed, David. You might consider backing off of the burning of the ridgetop and far peak to allow some atmospheric distance -- to give the viewers the impression of a greater distance between themselves and the mountains.

No rice in this part of the country. I don't think they grow any rice on the West Coast much north of the San Francisco Bay area. Wheat or maybe some barley for our delicious local beer!

Here are a couple of 8x10 shots from this past fall. Both shot with an Ebony 8x10 with a Fuji 300 5.6. The first is a small lake in northern WI and the second is an image from the Superior shoreline in MN. The sunrise image had a neutral density filter to lengthen the time exposure to somewhere around 2 minutes. And instead of using a graduated neutral density filter to balance out the sky in both images, I have been using my darkslide as a "dodging" tool. I moved the dark slide slightly up and down over the sky area for the duration of the exposure and it seemed to work fairly well. Jim

Martin,
Thanks. To be honest with you, it is either some Velvia that is expired (but frozen since I bought it when it was short dated - around 2007) or it is some current stock. I'm not sure, I had both loaded but I really do not keep track. Jim

I seldom effuse, but that stuff is not too shabby man.
Jim

Here are two more from this past fall. The first is one from a small lake in WI that has some of the most stunning lily pads. I've only seen and photographed them in the fall, but I hope to make it up there sometime this summer for a different look. At sunset, the lighting on the lily pads after a light rain was quite nice. The second image is from the Pictured Rocks National Seashore area in the UP. Both images taken with an 8x10 and the trusty and very sharp Fuji 300 5.6. I printed the lily pad one at 36x45 to hang on one of my walls. Every water drop is so clearly visible. I am a sucker for this kind of image where I tend to get lost in the detail. Jim

Good point well illustrated.
Whenever I try to photograph snow, I print it and there's nothing on the paper but white. It's sneaky stuff.
I wish I had some words of wisdom to give, and you might think I would given that snow covers the ground here for several months of the year, the very same months when I'm usually not working and I'm able to walk around with a camera. Unfortunately, you would be mistaken.
Far as I know, it's impossible to photograph a snowy scene on a sunny day, and still capture detail or features of the snow. I waited til just after the sun set that day, freezing my a** off (I had a can of beer to keep me company, it froze solid in the can), and I had barely 15 minutes to work with. Given that the snow was above my knees, I'm proud of the fact that I managed to get 3 decent shots in that 15 minute window.
As for showing it on the 'net, it's easy enough to darken the photo a little, unfortunately if you darken too much it turns to mud, and most people don't have calibrated monitors so any given rendition will only show well on a fraction of the monitors that are out there.

"Far as I know, it's impossible to photograph a snowy scene on a sunny day, and still capture detail or features of the snow".
Jody,
I succeeded in this endeavour years ago in my 35mm days. Secret for me was Pan F in Rodinal, spot metering on the brightest snow spot with texture and placing that on Zone 8.5. Now as a still- learning LF'er, I am hoping to replicate this with Acros 100 in Rodinal stand. Not there yet. :(

Far as I know, it's impossible to photograph a snowy scene on a sunny day, and still capture detail or features of the snow.
This might be a misunderstanding. If the sun is low, it can bring out the subtle structure and features of the snow particularly beautifully. I just printed a couple of negatives from the mountains with plenty of detail. Negative contrast was reduced a bit by the film development, which helps not to block the highlights. Unfortunately, these are MF so I cannot show them here. Just try it, it works.
Good luck,
Peter
I love snow and consider it easier to photograph in than normal outdoors since the shadows become more interesting and extraneous detail/crap is beautifully covered over. I use an incident meter, pmk (for sunny snow pix) or pyrocat HD, and either tmy2 or fomapan 100.

Snow in bright sun is easy. Pyro helps, as does a long-scale film. Keep the brightest readings for Zone VII, since you'll want some wiggle room for tiny sparkly highlights the
meter is incapable of reading individually. Throw in some dark black volcanic rocks with
hard shadows and you'll have a decent excercise in technique. Pan F won't work for holding those low values at the same time - too much toe. Either TMax is a good choice.
True straight-line films like Bergger 200, Foma 200, Super-XX, and Efke 25 were superb.

I will never forget this occasion and the energetic young lady in her mid 20s who joined this photo trip which I was leading. I was so taken by her courage and lack of self pity that I befriended her until her death about 6 months later. Photography is such an amazing artform, connecting people and their passions.

Jim thanks. I am reminded of Salgado's amazing images of Africa which depict discernable tragedy. I don't handle the sad side of life too well - too much empathy I suppose. I seek beauty whereever I "see" it rather than indulge in the misery of living.
That next image keeps me going.
Jim Cole

After seeing Salgado's book on Africa a few years ago, I called one of the galleries that represent him to inquire about one of his prints. I wasn't ready for the price, although if I would have had the $$ I would have spent them in the blink of an eye. His photographs, although representative of hardship, are truly visionary.
pdmoylan
24-Jan-2013, 21:02
We're off track here but what they heck.
Some of his images are archtypal, such as "Madonna and Child" (as I call it), of an Ethiopian refugee mother, sullen and gaunt, with young child at her breast, bright light eminating from the back, should be compared to Renanissance artists wo painted idealized scenes of the same subject. You have an instanteous attraction to his subjects, not for their beauty or a stylized perspective, but the need to empathize, to feel what they are experiencing.. To accomplish what he did you have to have to be driven, have a thick skin to see such depraved conditions and suffering mankind without blinking. It takes a special photographer to persist year after year in capturing the dying and dead among the suffering. Not sure I could.
I could write volumes about his work but perhaps we should push this to another thread in the "On Photography" folder.
cheers.
