cpercy,

Can't speak to the golf, but the scenery and the people are top notch. My wife was nagging me to hurry up when I took this shot because I was perilously close to the edge. Right below me about 300 feet down, but not in the photo, were chunks of the cliff that still had picnic tables bolted to them! Clearly this scenic spot has seen its share of erosion. But if I hadn't gotten that close there would have been the cliff edge in the foreground and not the surf, so I had to do it.

I have a beautiful 16x20 Ilfochrome of this hanging in my house printed by a woman I knew who did amazing Cibacrhome/Ilfochrome work. The scan and my pathetic tweaking of it does not do the original justice by a long shot.

Thanks for the comments.

Thanks Luc. Yes, I did explore a couple of different options, but I chose this vantage point because I liked the patterns on the discs, and also the way the wedge shape of the field (at left) echoed the wedge shape of the equipment. I got kind of lucky with the clouds, which to my eye also vaguely repeat that form. I do wish the top of the drill (I had to do some research to discover just what this was) didn't line up with the horizon line at right, but I didn't see that when I composed it.

Heroique, Sam, and Nana, Thank you, I appreciate that. The thing that struck me about this boardwalk is that they installed it to prevent people from marking up the hills with their footprints, but in doing so, they made the platform the dominating element in the landscape! At least it was for me. Anyway though, thanks again.

Yeah, hit 580 out of Gardner and after you pass through the Singing River ranch it turns into FR408 which leads through the Nat'l. Forest to the Lily Lake trailhead at about 10,000 ft elev. It's not a jeep trail though high clearance is recommended and if you have low range you will use it. There is about three or four miles of virtually flat valley walk til the climb up to the cirque where Lily Lake lies - splendid views the whole way. There are four fourteeners in the Blanca massif which you can climb if your'e so inclined! - Chris

This was taken at the pinnacles area in Crater Lake Nat Park. I wanted to fool around with front and rear tilts to eliminate the perspective distortion from shooting downward, but my position was precarious, on loose footing. I felt lucky to get this without losing my whole kit down the slope! In retrospect, I ind of like the effect of the distortion.

Nice image! And I bet it was a great place to be in person. That's one of the things I love about landscape photography. I may or may not get a great picture, but in any case I get to visit some terrific places.

Not that I don't get good stuff or enjoyment out of seeing new places, I find I get the best images I can when I marry my self to a subject or a place and stay there awhile.

That's why it is best to actually live in these places, in order to get well above average shots, you have to live it 24/7 and of course, be very talented. I have lived just down the road from these peaks for 15 years, have climbed them 3 times, all the 14,000 peaks in Colorado at least once. I am starting to take my 45N2 to the tops of these places.

If three's a crowd, then......100+ is a problem. Not one person had their tripod at a different height than the other, hilarious....

Really nice shot. Chimney Rock is one of those magical locations in the SW. On top of the spine is a Chaco Outlier with astronomical alignments involving the lunar standstill between the "chimneys". The Taos Indians consider it an ancestral site and consider it very sacred. See this reconstruction done by a friend of mine: http://www.dennisrhollowayarchitect.com/Movies/ChimneyRock/ChimneyRock1/ChimneyRock1.mov and http://www.chimneyrockco.org/standstill_intronew.htm

Reminds me of practically every time I've been to Yosemite, specifically Tunnel View. Regardless of the quality of light, there are always people lined up with their tripods and cameras oriented down the valley, trying to channel Ansel. Same thing at Sentinel Bridge. I still stop at these places when I'm in the park, but the camera doesn't make it out of the bag unless the light is doing something pretty special. Ansel lived in the park for years, so it's not surprising that he caught the odd good shot :-) Being in the park once every couple of years seriously reduces your chances of being there at the 'right' time...

This reminds me of a rather funny situation myself and a buddy ran into a few years ago. We had setup our cameras well off the highway on a viewing area that gave you a good view of Castle Mountain in Alberta. The clouds were quite interesting, but the light was flat on the mountain so we were just...waiting. We were both quiet, and just looking at the mountain, waiting.

A couple came down the boardwalk onto the platform, and saw us, saw our cameras, and saw that we were just...waiting.

After a few minutes, they came over and asked us what we were waiting for. I unfortunately spoke too soon, and spoke the truth: I said 'The Light'. They didn't get it, and wandered off. They saw the mountain, they saw the clouds, but I don't think they saw the light. Ah well, their loss.

As we were packing up after not making any images (the light never did show up), it dawned on me that when asked what we were waiting for, I should have responded 'Snow'. At least then they might have understood what we were waiting for. Combine that statement with the fact that it was August, and I think it would have been pretty funny.

An opportunity lost.

Two days prior to taking this image, I missed what was probably the nicest sunset/clouds I have ever seen. I was down by the Colorado River and not paying attention to the time. By the time I saw the incredible light, I was not in any position to photograph it. Two days later, I made it up to Canyonlands hoping for a repeat. While not as dramatic as two days prior, it still had a nice layered look of clouds hanging over the La Sal Mountains. Taken with an 8x10, Fuji 300 f5.6, and Velvia 50. Jim

I agree..Both John and Thomas have very arresting landscapes. I kind of like the earth in the left bottom corner of Thomas' island photo. Without it, it becomes more of an abstraction. There is nothing wrong either way, I just like the feeling of being 'grounded' by the earth in the corner. I think it also adds a feeling of depth. I love both of the photographs...Robbie

As for the cropping of the corner: I have thought about it, yes. The image will be pure and almost abstract, but with a loss of depth. And I found that I like it better with the feeling of depth. But I guess it is a matter of taste.

Hi Kirk and Erik,

This Chimney Rock is further north and west, on Owl Creek Pass, which connects Ridgeway with Cimarron (East of Montrose). See here: http://www.myfjcruiser.org/2061/owl-creek-pass/

It is a magnificent road for fall colors, as is the Last Dollar Road from Ridgeway to Telluride.

The climate here is too harsh to sustain rain-fed corn agriculture. Utes migrated into Colorado's mountainous regions and adapted with hunter-gatherer lifestyles. They also migrated further south, where they adapted to the horse and Spanish-Puebloan culture. Hunting parties would collect bison for exchange at Taos' trade fairs. I read somewhere that Taosenos remember a battle in which they trapped the Utes on the plain outside their Pueblo, and then forced them over the cliff, into the Rio Grande.

When mining in CO intensified, the Utes were progressively pushed out of the mountains, into SE Colorado, where their reservations, and some amazing Ancestral Puebloan sites, are today.

As for the Anasazi Chimney Rock, I sure would love to photograph that someday. I don't know what kind of access you can get.

The Chimney Rock in your photos, Kirk, is the one located off of SR 151 (13 miles west of Pagosa Springs) about 5 miles south of US 160 . As I have traveled around the west I find that Chimney Rocks, names and formations, are pretty common.

Yes, Peter, the Anasazi one is open to guided tours. They keep hours throughout the summer and some in fall and spring. It is a healthy uphill hike from the parking area. For additional information try the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association. Pagosa Springs office is 970 731-6278 and the Arboles office is 970 883-5359.

I am not familiar with the Escalante ruins, Kirk, but the Hovenweep Ruins, several sites, straddle the Utah-Colorado border. The Lowry Ruin (they built a roof over the site so it is not very photogenic) lies just a few miles north of Hovenweep. These ruins are more directly west of the Chimney Rock on SR 151, i.e. west and a little north of Cortez.

I am including an infrared photo (MACO with Linhof IV and Schneider 150mm) of the Holly Ruins that are part of Hovenweep.

It's a very nice photograph on it's own. I like it. I love all the wood and the wicker. I would fix the chair and get rid of the potted plant.

Since you are asking for suggestions, I would do a series of photographs with different people in the chairs or around the chairs. An old couple, a couple old men or women, you and your mate, your kids, whoever. Maybe grandparents in the chairs surrounded by grandkids.

I would get people to talk, play checkers, knit, sit with their fishing gear or whatever and then take a natural unposed looking shot. It could make for some great memories.

Here’s a Seattle neighborhood landscape.

If you ask me, birches, like these, don’t seem natural in rows – I like them wild and disorderly, like in the mountains. Still, these well-behaved city birches are pretty to walk by, summer and winter. I walk by them every day.

This shot is early spring w/ leaves just sprouting. Weeks later, the branches grow heavy, shiver loud in the wind (as birches will do), and soften the traffic noise.

Thanks, Tri-x does work wonderfully in this situation.

Wow the old lens gives such a wonderful feel to this shot.

Thanks. I agree about the look the lens creates. If my serial number sleuthing is accurate the lens dates from around 1920, plus or minus. It is really heavy (7 pounds) and strains the front standard of the 2D, but I love shooting with it.

thanks alex. these were the first two I did on 4x10 to test the effectiveness of the split dark slide. i'm psyched about the format. i was originally doing stitched 4x5s to achieve the look, but that doesn't work so well in every scenario, especially with quickly changing light. i am mostly going to apply the format to my Railroad Landscape Series (http://john-sanderson.com/photographic-projects/railroad-landscape/) which it was originally intended.

The boat that takes people around the lake and to Wizard Island is just out of the frame (toward the bottom right). From up where I took the photo it looks like a tiny two person boat but it's got probably 40-50 people on it, I think it's the distance, too, and the otherwise stillness of the water that makes the ripples so interesting looking.

Look up the Big Four Ice Cave at Monte Cristo. The mountain on the right is the Big Four. It is not far from Granite Falls, WA. Here is a closer shot I have of that mountain and apparently why it's called the Big Four taken many years ago. A bit of history:

This was a recreation get-away many years ago where people took a train to get there. The picture shows the remaining structure of the Big Four Inn at Monte Cristo, WA. Once a scenic resort built in 1921, it was tragically destroyed in a fire on 7 September 1949.

This was shot on Fujichrome Provia 100F with a Fujinon 90mm f/8. A little back tilt was all I did to get foreground to infinity focus. Meter reading was done with the Pocket Light Meter app with my iPhone (reading on the dunes, then reduced by half a stop). Processed at home with the Arista E-6 kit, plus stabilizer I made, using the taco method. With fall coming, I hope to get a lot more time with the camera.

Very clean and simple. I'm a sucker for these "lone tree" landscapes, but when I'm out and about there are always too many trees for me to find one all by itself!

Thanks Vaughn and Jonathan. I was out for the day shooting waterfalls with a few mates and between falls we came across this field and stopped the car in a real hurry... We all came home with very similar shots... I shot this on FP4+ and on velvia 50. Unfortunately my velvia shots were a bit too dark to work with (metering without CPL and shooting with CPL = disaster.) One of my mates took his shot from 5ft to the left of me, with a 300/9 nikkor on 4x5 velvia 50 and his results were nothing short of stunning

Nice composition. I can't help wondering though how the field and sky are the same uniform shade of gray?? Were you using a yellow filter with yellow grass or something?

If larger on your computer screen is what you mean...Click on the image, click on it again -- then use 'Control +" to enlarge on PC's or 'Command +' on Macs..

Corran - i didn't filter it at all. This was facing north west in the afternoon. After we left i thought 'that would have looked better with a red or orange filter.. Next time.

Thanks Vaughn, forgot about that... But still, it pretty quick starts to fall apart because of the small filesize

Ever wonder what the landscape looks like in south GA? Well here you go. A bunch of swampy nothing. Sorry I didn't spot the dust off.

Very nice Bryan! I love the small sun reflection on the swamp water... I need to do some shooting in the sun photos myself.

Thanks...personally I'm not really excited about it but that's because I'm so bored with this kind of view. It's all I see. But I'm sure it's exotic to others living in different places!

In Kansas if we want to photograph mountains we've got to dredge them up ourselves.

Dredged sand down by the Kaw river.

I've heard Kansas is pretty flat, but making your own hills, now that's something!
