I like it more than the previous landscape you posted. I think it's because I don't like heights. The short DOF makes you think about what's at hand, rather than what's yonder. When I'm on the edge of a rock or climbing a tower, I am comforted by dealing primarily with my immediate surroundings more than the view which might make me think, "Hey that's a long way to fall or tumble." Yet you've left enough background detail to show, "What a view, this hike was worth it." It's more story telling and communicating than a normal static f64 landscape.

Here's one looking into Death Valley from the east side:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6803827361_59958726eb_z.jpg

This was taken a few years back during a spectacular wild flower season. On a sad note during this trip someone abandonded a beautiful Peacock who was standing at a stop sign approaching every car that stopped and looking in. It was getting dark and turning cold when I approached and I knew that the bird, standing about 3 foot or so tall (he could look directly in over the door) and I knew that he would be in trouble if no one picked him up. But I didn't have room or a place to take him so drove off. With hindsight I now regret not letting him in and driving him to a police station but I didn't think of that at the time.

Thanks. I'm not sure what the temperature was that day, but I can tell you that it was brutal. This was one of those photos that you have to force yourself to make because it seems like the simple effort of taking off your backpack and setting up your camera (not to mention getting under the dark cloth) might just kill you.

This was a similar type of day -- might have been 105 to 110F. But there were some insect noise. I was a little wary of rattlesnakes, but they were probably all deep under rocks, etc.

This place was incredible we camped there for a week and saw no other people. These formation

Great place I would suggest taking a look at the surrounding areas on google maps satellite view and make note of where the interesting places are in relation to the roads. When you are driving the roads are all up on the tops of the plateaus and you can't even tell you are driving only a few hundred yards from the surface of Mars. Martin, when I first saw this photo of yours on Flickr, it caused me to find its location on Google Maps. I then used Satellite View, and I discovered a couple of farmhouses that are on top of the hill, about 55% across your photo.

The farmhouses look grand. I think they would be quite nice. One even has a swimming pool. I imagine I could scoop one of them up for just a few million euros...

For some strange reason I lugged my 8x10 camera all over the park, but only took two shots. Here's the first, taken with my Kodak Century Universal, a 210mm Graphic Kowa lens (thanks Zach!), on Ilford HP5+. I think I shot it at f/64 and 1/30 or something like that:

Yeah I'm not really sure how it happened, but it was erosion caused by farming. More info can be found here: http://www.gastateparks.org/ProvidenceCanyon

For me, landscape is until now, the most difficult subject to do...

Give me naked girls any day...

Could it be, that viewers of the fairer form,

tend to overlook, or are somehow 'blinded or distracted' by possible technical deficiencies,

and,

less judgemental, figuratively speaking, to obvious flaws and various technical distractions ...

and are remiss in pointing to such fairer form faults ...

Wow. You must have been jumping up and down when you came upon that scene: Stop the car, Stop the car !

Thanks Ken,

I walked there by feet ... the road is not really public ;-)
But my compañeros only took close-ups pictures of the icicles ...
I decided to step back a little bit ...
normally I don't do roads and stuff ... but here I liked how it leads into the picture ...

More dramatic in terms of an more contrast (like an S-curve?)
Or local sculpting?

Natural lightening changes ... for example sunset is hard to do there as the mountains block virtually all light in the foreground ... I mostly did closeups of the Mountains with Alpenglow ...

Perhaps something a bit less literal, more of the mystery we sometimes feel in the early morning. My version is a bit exaggerated, but it's a direction you might consider.

@Old-N-Feeble: how's your technique of getting rid of the stains?
Haven't been successful in my attempts...

so I'm willing to let them go ;-)

That looks really nice, EOTS... but the original is great too. We all have our personal opinions though.

I didn't want to state that the yellow-brown areas in the snow look... just a tiny bit... like moose pee stains.:D

I used the Eyedropper Tool to select the color from an average part of the snow in the same vacinity and used the Paintbrush Tool in Hue Mode set to 50 percent Opacity. The most deeply stain areas required the most painting. It's important to follow the shape and contours of what you're painting over especially linear shapes like the icicles. I wasn't very careful though. I overdid it in places and should have selected from more similar shadow areas as I painted but I was in a hurry. Also, some of the areas I tweaked have a red tinge on this other monitor.. I moved the image from one PC to another and back and they have mismatched profiles.

I'm sure there are better techniques but that's what I did.

No, your're right ... I think it would draw the viewers attention too much ...

Like pretty much everyone else who commented I really love this image. VERY well done!

But since so many others were offering suggestions for changes - my first thought, as primarily a black and white photographer, was that this would look great in black and white. So I converted it (nothing fancy, just mode->grayscale) and tweaked the brightness and contrast a bit. This also neatly removes the yellowish stains without any effort with the eyedropper.

Hi Zenny!

Thank you very much for your interest!

That place is called "Schlögener Schlinge" in Upper Austria: In Schlögen, the Danube river forms a sling.
Coming from the west, the Danube forms a first horseshoe bend of 180 degrees, as seen in the photograph.
It then forms another horseshoe bend back towards the east
(if you look closely at the right of the picture, you can see the turning point of another sling)

Here's a satellite image:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Schl%C3%B6gener_Schlinge.jpg

There are tons of (for me) boring pictures of the sling ...
mostly of the same famous viewpoint...
Here's one ... http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schl%C3%B6gener_Schlinge
So I went there multiple times (I guess about 5 times with large format) to get a photograph which I would be satisfied with ...

It was hard to get the exposure / grad filtering right,
as I was starting with analog / large format in March 2011,
so I got ill exposed photographs multiple times
(one time too dark overall, another time blown out sky, other times the sunset/clouds did not work for me, ...)
What I remember, that was two neutral density grad filters stacked, a hard 0,3 and a soft 0,2!

Regarding post processing: I decided to darken the trees in the foreground,
otherwise postprocessing is only color corrections and further contrast regulation...

Best regards and sorry for my bad English ;-)

Hello Martin:

Thanks so much for taking time to explain.

BTW, when I checked your picture and the one here (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Donauschlinge_Schloegen.jpg), the shadow confused me.

The wikipedia picture was taken when the Sun is behind/or on the slight left of the photographer. But when you took, the sun is opposite to you. However, when you check the shadows of the mountains, both looks similar. Or they are reflections? Did I miss something?

Your picture of Icicles at Vorderer Gosausee, Dachstein Mountain View is also mind blowing! I love tyour two pictures! :-D

Good question!
Not sure about that. In the Wikipedia image, the shadow casted by the mountains to the right is a bit strange?!
Most of the hard shadows fall to the right side, given the light source at the left....

C4D,

What is the make of the N.D. grad filter? It looks, at least on my monitor, that it is anything but neutral. I had a Cokin that had the same issue. I replaced it with Galen Rowel NDs from Singh Ray which is truly neutral.

I just borrowed a Chinese 6x17 back and am anxious to run some film through it. Really do like your image.

Thanks JD!

I actually was using a Singh-Ray 3 stop hard grad... I love them and the Tiffen glass grad filters but I keep placing the Tiffen grads in my back pocket and sitting on them and breaking them!
I think the not neutral look might be from my lens vignetting at the top because I had a lot of front rise going on because I was actually beneath the scene and wanted to keep the film plane as parallel as I could. I also added a bit of warming to my sky as my Velvia scans on my 4990 have been coming out pretty cold.

Enjoy the 6x17 back! I'm having a blast with mine so far!

Kind of a left over from Great Sand Dunes National Park. This was after I exposed a few other 4x5 slides. The light came and went in less than 10 minutes. Here it was waning. Not sure what I was composing but it was super quick and with a 210mm that was on for a photo before this. Kind of in between being not long enough and not wide enough for me.

4x5 Velvia 50
Crown Graphic Special
Graphic Kowa 210mm

Several seconds exposure, can't remember how many.

Wow, nice. While it doesn't have the dramatic lighting, there's still something special about it...great shot.

Thank you. The lighting on the mountains is much better in this one. The sun was working through bits of clouds erratically. Be hard to complain it never lined up for me though.

Thank you. Hope you like the print. I have to get some acrylic for mine....the matte is starting to warp without it :D. Probably be a good idea for an art fair I am doing next month.

I'd love to go back there and camp on the dunes for many days.

Not really sure what to make of this. 16" B&L RR mounted on a Speed Graphic. Underexposed and poorly developed. For some reason I like it.

Really love this image Martin. Everything has interest, strange palette of colours, soft tones, the gentle curving road, the chevrons in the sky (normally drive me mad) are so surreal.
