Hope it's ok to post this. I don't consider it a repost since it's a drum scan by Lenny Eiger, which is fantastic!

Well I finally finished editing this drum Scan. On 4x5 Velvia 50 from Great Sand Dunes NP in September. I am surprised at the color casts I had in my original: http://www.flickr.com/photos/zboumeester/6228021629/in/set-72157626457305442

I tried to keep the mountains more neutral as well as the sky. Glad I am finally done editing, it took forever. Just getting rid of the small bits of sand/dust took over 6 hours. I would have liked to keep the vignetting less noticeable in the lower right. Not sure if it's the scan or my processing but the drum scan has much better detail in the highlights of the sky.

Thank you both. I was quite happy with this final edit but now I am unsure. I may have to re-edit it again. Starting to dislike the direction I took it, especially in the shadows. But it took forever to edit. Literally spent a few weeks on it off and on. Lenny's scan is definitely great though. Wish I had more to send him.

Zaitz, I personally liked the sky being more blue as in your original. It played off of the blue shadows in the dunes better. But that is just my opinion. The tonality of the scan is certainly fantastic.

Holden, great tones. What ISO are you rating your Arista? And if you don't mind me asking, what is your process method (HC-110 dilution, time and temp, etc)? I have been struggling with Arista EDU 100, both 8X10 and 5X7. My latest attempt (I haven't processed them yet) was shot at ISO 25, HC-110 1:63..."H", I believe, and will be tray processed for 10 minutes @ 68 degrees. My negs have been thin and lack contrast. I am getting weary with testing.

Holden's got the tones all right. I have developed 8x10 edu 100 (foma) in hc110 dil.H 10 minutes, 70-72f, rocking the tray gently once a minute.

Pyrocat HD (normal 1:1:100) also develops the film very nicely, but PMK (as diluted normally) comes out pretty weak.

I shoot it at iso 50.

This has a feeling of presence and grand scale, distance and atmosphere, strength and delicacy, power and silence... :)

If it's not rude to suggest: As it is now, there are two subjects of comparatively equal weight. Removing just a sliver from the bottom would tip the scales just enough to allow the top to faintly dominate. An even nicer way to do the same, would be to darken the pure white reflections of the sky at the bottom a touch... Just something to consider.

What you are proposing is an interesting alternative. I do like reflections but in that case the composition might indeed be better served by only one zone. I will have to fine tune the tone in the lower part but that is a start.

Unusual and very beautiful image. I usually am not a fan of selective focus, as it can feel subject-centric and contrived, but it feels very "right" to me here. Excellent.

Thanks Joel, Luc... The mood and feel changes big on each f stop with this lens. The lack of major objects for subjects is challenging too.

Here's another one. Different lens. It's got shapes and lines, but I don't like how the grass rendered out of focus in the middle third of the image. This is with the trioplan, which usually does a great job with out of focus stuff. I guess I should have used the meniscus here too.

Hey Randy, I am actually doing a 1+200 stand method of development for the 4x5 and 8x10 times are a little different for each type of film. I am exposing at box speed and developing in trays. Room temp water, 1 minute of gentle agitation and for 4x5 57 minutes of stand and for 8x10 35 minutes of stand. The 8x10 seems much more sensitized in development. Key to this is being sure that your HC110 is mixed thoroughly before the film hits it. Good luck!

I misspoke in my earlier post, I am shooting this @25 just like you are and doing an N -2 development in HC 110 at 1+200 in stand. for the 4x5 its 1 minute agitation plus 57 minutes stand and for the 8x10 its 1 minute agitation plus 35 minutes stand. cheers!

Lenny's scan is fantastic and he got everything possible out of the transparency. The color has nothing to do with him. I've stated it was edited. I do not try and recreate the scene as 'reality' would have it or that was captured on the negative/transparency. The image posted is far from a straight scan.

If Lenny does not want his name associated with the image then I will surely take it off and make an edit over on Flickr.

Ken, my comment was meant in a completely complimentary way. No defense needed!

And my comment was a tongue-in-cheek crack about aspens being clones and a large grove is basically all the same tree.

I could easily find myself standing in the same spot watching the light on the landscape. If I had gotten the camera out, I probably would have used my modified darkslide and taken just the top half of the image you took (a 4x10).

But I appreciate that you have shown us the ground we are standing on -- your image speaks more of the scrubland than my image would have...thus seems more complete.

And my comment was a tongue-in-cheek crack about aspens being clones and a large grove is basically all the same tree.

Ahh.. Very good! Someone just explained that to me the other day.

Here's what Wikipedia says (emphasis added): "The aspen tree (Populus tremuloides) forms large stands of genetically identical trees (technically, stems) connected by a single underground root system. These trees form through root sprouts coming off an original parent tree, though the root system may not remain a single unit in all specimens. The largest known fully connected aspen is a grove in Utah nicknamed Pando, and some experts call it the largest organism in the world, by mass or volume. It covers 0.43 km2 (106 acres) and is estimated to weigh 6,000 metric tons (6,600 short tons)."

Thanks Nana,

Epson V700. It does an okay job. I make a grid pattern of guide lines in PS, and view each square in the grid at 100% or more. I remove unwanted elements like dust and spots, etc from each square one at a time using a Wacom tablet. It takes time, but the resulting image is pretty clean.

I'm sure there is a better way, but I don't trust using filters or other techniques that are applied to the entire image.

Jesus this picture is awesome. I just love it. It's got everything going for it. Dynamic colors, dynamic sky, mountains in the background, deep shadows, glowing highlights. It's one of my favorite landscape pictures that I've seen in a while, and definitely one of the best pictures I've ever seen taken within the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Excellent job Zaitz!

And depending on how/when I look at the photo I prefer it one way...or another. I am glad you like it and I really appreciate the compliments.

I prefer to wait for a high quality edition, even if I have to wait long time.
I use a TFT monitor, one of those from the Digital Paleolitic...these monitors don't have any sharpen feature incorporated, so, what is good for me, is usually oversharpened for people who use those flat monitors with sharpening effect. Anyaway, what really cares for me is the quality of the photos in fiberbase photographic paper, I enlarge all my photos with 2 Durst 5x7" enlargers, a 138s with coldlight or condenser head and a 139G with a Durst 301 dichroic colorhead.

Great seascape Nana. I've always wanted to ask- Do you visually focus your camera or does it have a fixed focus preset?

Thanks, Nicolas.

I made this camera to be a quick setup. I shoot a lot during winter, with big waves and strong winds, so, many times I have to run fast to escape from waves.

This camera has a ground glass but it also has as an external viewfinder wich I adapted to the camera. Focus is fixed at the hiperfocal distande of f8, so, at f22, I have all in focus from 90cm (3 feet) to infinity. Usually, I do light metering with a spotmeter in a secure place, I put filters (if required) on camera, fix aperture, shutter speed, put a film holder and go to the spot I want, compose with external viewfinder, shoot and run. This camera is fantastic for my seascape work.

Maybe you ought to read through this thread from the beginning, critiques are welcome if they have been asked for and generally those with frequent negative comments take themselves elsewhere! Or, maybe since you're the expert here, you can offer how they can scan prints just as good as your work. (we haven't seen your work, just someone elses).

When you have a bit dense negative and you try to get some detail on sky, with a scanner wich costs 600 euros, like the Epson v700, you will have some noise, for sure.

Thank you Nicolas. It is hard to tell on the computer, but there was a dusting of snow on those upper layers. It was so cold that day, I could barely operate my camera!

Austin,

Having spent thousands of hours at the Grand Canyon over 10 years, I came to one conclusion. The canyon is one hell of a tough subject for black and white film.
Definitely tough, especially when the light is changing every second-those shadows were moving fast! I can tell you though with confidence that the precise moment captured above was the very pinnacle of form and beauty on that day. :)

Hey Numbnuts, who are you referring to?
Maybe you ought to read through this thread from the beginning, critiques are welcome if they have been asked for and generally those with frequent negative comments take themselves elsewhere! Or, maybe since you're the expert here, you can offer how they can scan prints just as good as your work. (we haven't seen your work, just someone elses).

Tried it, the centered branches are detrimental to the image; when you maintain that in the crop you wind up loosing too much of the image. The bottom of the trunk to the left also gets uncomfortably close to the edge.

Hi Gsinico,
yes maybe your chamonix its better tha mine... but
I've learned not to worry too much about cameras. I think they are just tools to tell stories...
Once you find the right feeeling whith the one you have just to go for it and start to think about something to tell people.
I always try to listen to the music and not the way the needle sounds ( even if the needle is important.. obviously)

So, Chamonix shen hao toyo graflex... bah... for me they are all just the same
I've choosene a shen because last year a dear friend of mine gave me as a gift
I like the colour and its lightness

And I like chamonix because of its name; reminds me when I was in france as a ski teacher

I see the Potash Road down there, and I know it would take me to the White Rim Trail. I haven't been down there in 20 years. Oh, man, do I need a trip out there!

It was good not to include sky, which I would have done. It makes the canyon actually seem more endless without the La Sal Mountains in the background, though they wouldn't have been in view from this South-looking angle anyway.

I recently acquired a Busch Pressman camera, so I put it in my backpack and took it for a hike up to a ridge in my neighborhood. This is a view from Cerro Alto Peak in SLO county.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pictures of the Dolomites, and whatever else you might shoot. Your first couple of photos have been gorgeous!

Alberto, Nice image. Medium format doesn't belong here though. There's a thread for miniature formats elsewhere on this site.

Here's another recent scan of an old C41 neg I shot. This is Vericolor 2 type L, shot around 1981 using my old Calumet CC401 and a Schneider Symmar 210mm lens.
It's a view of some volcanic plugs known as The Seven Sisters, looking toward the coast from Cuesta Ridge in SLO county.

hikinig with LF near Lake Louise, AB: L foreground is the Devil's Thumb, rear middle is the Mitre. Canham DLC45, Sironar N 210, 100Tmax in D23.69978

The atmosphere distance is wonderful, Hans.

The lighter area along the left edge of the image was at first distracting as it pulled my attention away from the Mitre. But now I see it as adding a bit of tension into what would otherwise be a static image -- and makes for a much stronger image.

I just printed this on my "new" Epson 2200 for kicks while drinking coffee:

Greetings from the New Jersey Rain forest. Where an uncluttered 50 feet constitutes a Grand Vista.

This is not a grand vista.

Nice work, gbogatko! Fifty feet at least until the trees leaf! The same can happen in the redwoods -- though if a tree falls, a 300 foot vista can be sometimes be created.
