I recently took a tif file to my local printer and experienced this problem. The file was scanned on a Nikon Coolscan and saved as a tif in CS2 (LZW'd). However when the printer (who's running CS4) opened the file it showed up as a Nikon RAW file? Colors and contrast were way off.
Took the file to a friend who's running CS3, same problem. However tifs saved from PS7 opened fine in CS3.
Does anybody know what's going on here?
John, in what way do you mean it showed up as a Nikon RAW file (I assume you mean the native Nikon NEF format?) - did you convert the colour space from Nikon RGB to something like Adobe RGB before saving to TIFF ?

Yes the file was saved in Adobe RGB(1998). The printer said his copy of CS4 would only recognize the file as a Nikon Raw file, he didn't specify NEF. I didn't even know I could save in Nikon Raw from CS2, I thought I was saving tifs.

Also I have two 4x5 b&w scans off an epson flatbed scanner, saved as tif's in greyscale in CS2. My friend's copy of CS3 opens them as "Camera Raw 4.0-TIFF"'s.
You should only be able to save in NEF format from within Nikon Scan, which I always run standalone but assume the same options would be available if it were run from the import command within CS2. This would be apparent from the .NEF file extension though. You can also save in TIFF and (CYMK) TIFF from Nikon Scan.
What does the EXIF data say for file format, ICC profile etc viewed from Bridge or File Info within CS2 ?

It says the EXIF Color Space is uncalibrated. Color & b&w's.

Are you sure that you took a tiff file to your printer? The only way that CS3 or CS4 will open a raw file is in Adobe camera raw and it will not open a tiff file in camera raw. It would open the file in Adobe camera raw if you took the file with the CR designation on the file. You should be able to look at the file that you took to the printer and determine that you took him the correct file. That would explain your problems with color discrepency etc.
Even if you save a CR file as a tiff you still have the CR file as separate from the tiff file.
In addition it might be wise to recheck your color preferences settings in CS2. It sounds to me that you have a conflict between your color preferences and the color preferences of your printer and of your friend. Do you have your settings to have the printer control color or CS2 to control color? What about your printer and your friend, how are they set up?

and it will not open a tiff file in camera raw.
ACR will open TIF and JPG files, although not all adjustments will be available.
