I missed out on the first night of northern lights. Whenever I checked, it was raining....Went out last night, but I couldn't see anything. Tried to use my Tamron 35mm on my Z9 via an FTZII adapter, and it just wouldn't click into place. Thus, no autofocus. Figured I take a shot at EI500, f/2, 1/15th just to see, and focused manually.....Well, for whatever reason, the image isn't very sharp. Better luck next time! All my primes are f-mount. :(

Clouds rolled in last evening here so no third chance. You may remember this Barn Door Tracker I made some years ago. It would have been good for your second shot. It's good for couple of minutes of exposure before streaking starts with a wide angle lens.

So Friday night I got a few pics of the aurora here in north GA, but I mostly missed the show. I just happened to see everyone freaking out online after it was happening for 30-45 minutes. I saw it vanish over about 15 minutes, but at least I saw it a bit.

On Saturday night, with big predictions and clear weather forecast, there was hundreds of people trying to see things at the local lake where I've shot a lot of night images. Nothing happened and it clouded over to boot, but I did shoot this:

Looks very sharp, a bit flary (like my Orthometars too, I kind of like that). Lovely Bokeh shot at F4.5 to increase DOF a bit and lens shpuld be better one stop down. Very pleasant rendition. Plaubel Peco Junior Mini-Me View Camera, with Sony Nex-C3 Digital Back homemade by me. 1/160 sec not bad with a 100mm lens. I bought this recently from the Ukraine, I'll be shooting with it this season I'm sure. Should be good with Ortho and Pan B&W too. Camera was handheld

Excellent shots tuco.

Last night we went to the synchronous fireflies at Congaree NP. You have to win a lottery to get in, and then they don't allow tripods. I worked with some long exposures and composited an impressionistic photograph. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't allow tripods. I went in 2019 before they shut down general admission and used a tripod with no issues, even though there was way more people.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ogvbsriK3UiISl7yS5RhYvXpAUOCUlypFZ_t-e47YpfYB9PyMaWJpl7cF3zmqdAY2SL1PD9pCQJyVLQsWv0XCGaHIkk4rmOg0RcGa6MnOTbbFyc3AWBUU9PMTUkBPpT0ZnuxMto4sxq6f8D6-FF3y4y7Phbsq2Gkfv9ARsSuIBR2Ub7wITLDW5_JOk0/s950/fireflies-composite-01s.jpg

On a related note, I specifically set my camera to not show a review image after shooting, and never looked at my screen. I shot all of this blind, just guessing, at waist level. I was very annoyed as there was 4-5 photographers constantly looking at their cameras and reviewing images with the bright screen, which absolutely destroyed my night vision and scared the fireflies away. Despite all these rules and regulations (no lights, only dim red flashlights allowed which they provided) it really didn't matter. I even saw two folks take their cell phone out and try to take a photo, and of course the phone tried to use the flashlight to autofocus which just strobed the whole forest. It seems like back in 2019 and before it was not a well-known event and only those "in the know" came, and I remember I was one of the few people messing around with a camera. It's really dark when it's happening and even an f/1.4 lens at 1600 ISO needs minutes of exposure to get anything but faint yellow pinpricks. Hence there's almost no images of this event before 2019.

Thanks Peter. Surprisingly the shadow of the balloon moved pretty fast. The balloon was moving up and horizontal. I had to run ahead of the shadow, compose, get a shot and run ahead again. By the third iteration it was too high.

BTW, I liked your portraits in the Paper Negatives thread. I'd be curious what color your wife's lipstick was using that yellow-green filter.

Thanks, Tuco. Janice says, "Dusty Rose." I just finished a new scanner for 8x10 and smaller. I'll try scanning some of the paper negatives made without a filter. Their dynamic range was too much for my cheap Canon flatbed.

When we were leaving the conference my friend and I took a wrong turn and went out to the pool pavilion. For some strange reason you have to have a keycard to get back into the hotel from the pool, which we didn't have, since we weren't guests. A hotel employee had to come get us out of the pool area. However, while waiting, I noticed the pool was lined up perfectly for this symmetric view of the Marriott Marquis across the street:

Fort Moultrie:
Location: Fort Moultrie is located on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina.
History: Originally named Fort Sullivan, it was built of palmetto logs and played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War. The fort inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina as “The Palmetto State.” During British occupation (1780–1782), it was known as Fort Arbuthnot.
Rebecca Motte: The battle at Fort Moultrie involved the capture of a British-held fortified supply center. Rebecca Motte, who had been displaced from her home, played a significant role during this time1.
Visitor Center: You can visit the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park Visitor Center on Sullivan’s Island to learn more about this historical site2.

About 12 years ago I shot some startrails at the base of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in GA. I had only just gotten into photography a couple years prior and was experimenting with startrails, which at the time baffled a lot of folks. I'm sure there were people doing it but long exposure night photography, at least in my neck of the woods, was unknown and I had a lot of people actually accuse me of Photoshopping the images as I was printing/showing them around that time. Anyway, I made an okay photograph but it never was quite what I envisioned.

Fast forward to last night and I finally went back up to the bald to make a better photograph as a local club I have been introduced to was having a "milky way photography" outing. Well it was a madhouse, not just with them but also dozens of others out on a clear, Friday night at one of the darkest places in GA (12 years ago I was all alone on a Saturday evening). It's still shocking sometimes how mainstream "hobby" photography has become. Also I'm quite an introvert and I get really annoyed when lookie-loos come and bother me for an hour while I'm trying to make images!

Anyway, I had to dodge car headlights all night, which I think ruined all my film, but I haven't developed anything yet. Here's a quick digital image of what I shot:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXWpc6Jr8dw7JaBEeyZNWxeYEAtNyoA1w2bGVr9kUdhh_kSduqzkwtttbfI3y8ui6_2WYk4fjj8Zm4cHbYKa5lw3_XQ3MPNuiFUreVUeVvbFdnJGtLP6owwEdy-ZqJLWCmm-bsmJPolNCHvQeZ0pQUG90Mai4mQuFx58uc2Nyf3AreAJQVMgtcJDwbRg/s850/bb-624-02-edit02s.jpg
