Timely

My local radio station has an American DJ that just told a long story about his time as a child in American Occupied Berlin

He said forgive my tears, I was crying with him, still am.

My first wife was borne in USA Occupied Berlin (https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/allies-end-occupation-of-west-germany) 1946

The DJ read a letter about scarce food, fuel, heat his mother wrote, she was a nurse taking care of blinded Germans and one little American boy, her son

I met my wife in Skokie IL, neither of us Jewish. The Holocausts Museum is there

Seems to me, War is too constant

This nice guy greeted customers coming in and helped them load their car if they needed. We bought a piece of artwork found at this antique market and after he helped me load it in our car, I took some images around the building. He was helping another customer so I asked if I could take his pic when I was leaving.

Oh - when he was helping me with the painting I bought (it was 4x5 feet!) he saw my camera and asked if I was a paparazzi! I thought that was funny, and also prompted me to ask to take his picture.

The cool thing about having multiple Normas, is that you can leave them set up for a while. Getting ready to shoot this one. Classic Rembrandt Lighting, Broncolor Beauty Light pointed straight down from up high as possible. Silver reflector on the floor tilted towards the subject. Lens is 300mm chrome Schneider Xenar, on custom made Norma board. Xenars are lovely to shoot through at near full aperture. The focus blows out behind the front row of petals which I find attractive. Strobe meter says F22 at EI 50 so just one pop will do. Canvas Background is by David Maheu "Kelly Grey" Like it Stormy Grey middle key with no corner vignettes. I can vignette with light if required

We went to a live show Friday night in Atlanta to see The Midnight (https://www.themidnightofficial.com/). Actually this was the first time I've ever been to a non-classical concert where I wasn't either part of the backstage crew, or doing something related to sound, video, or photography for the performers. Or playing. Anyway, I of course had to bring a camera so I stuffed my Leica M6 and MS-Optical 35mm f/3.5 in my jeans pocket like a proper hipster and a 15mm Voigtlander in my vest. Security stopped me but the manager let me in since "it wasn't an interchangeable lens camera" and I hid the little 15mm under my phone showing them what was in my pocket .

Anyway, dev'd the T-Max 100 and the roll of color is hanging to dry. Shot this with the 15mm, probably at 1/30th. The light bars on stage were crazy bright. Lot easier to snap pics when you've got serious lights, unlike some of the dingy bars I've shot in with 3200 speed film and still needed 1/15.

The image is the fibers, vastly enlarged to 8X10 printed on board with EPSON

The rag makes it 3D and pokes out of a hole in the print

I made it in an all women SAIC Textiles class

Thanks Peter and Tin Can.

There are many such towns near Hangzhou and Suzhou, China known for the canals. The tour books call this area “Venice of China”. This shot was taken in the city of Shaoxing a few years ago. I took a long weekend from a business trip to Hangzhou which in itself a beautiful city. Anyway I didn’t choose Shaoxing randomly. Shaoxing is home to the famous Shaoxing wine. I bought a small bottle of the local stuff and enjoyed it by myself in the hotel room. The wine tasted like Japanese sake but with more flavour. Pretty smooth at room temperature.

Just to give you all something to point and laugh at, here's a photo of my hawk, Screamer, and I, circa 1985:

Now, that is really cool! Closest I got to something like that was helping a buddy of mine with his fancy pigeons. Of course, they would of been prey to your hawk!

1999 I 'made' this completely DIGI

The Dyed 'Rag' was shot with toy DIGI Hasbro microscope

The image is the fibers, vastly enlarged to 8X10 printed on board with EPSON

The rag makes it 3D and pokes out of a hole in the print

This is 1 of 5 made same time, all vary

I made it in an all women SAIC Textiles class

Learned a lot

Thanks! The pigeons wouldn't have been prey for a red tail. Red tails hunt small mammals on the ground, rabbits, squirrels, mice.... Mine would ignore pheasants running on the ground.....The local pigeon guy hated me and gave me the stink eye every time he saw me...but my hawk was no threat to his pigeons. Falcons, though, would've been another story.

These will both get some more use. Glenn Evans had the original Makina Strobe Sync Plug with fires my 70s era Broncolor strobes just fine. Plaubel recommended the F4.2 lens for commercial product shooting. Shown plugged into my Paramount homemade Pulso Sync cord. With the F2.9 lens I'll be selecting Ilford Pan F at EI 50 which gives me about 1/125 wide open or so outdoors. If I want uber sharpness with the F4.2 lens I will switch to EI 100 Delta 100

My favorite focal length for traveling is 28mm. The guy I got it from happened to be selling one too. I might look into getting the 40mm but the truth is, I took a Nikon F80 with a 28mm and a 50mm and didn't use the 50mm even once.
Mine is not green label but I found a source online on how to convert it and will definitely do it soon.

Agreed. The quality of these lenses is out of this world, some of the best lenses ever made in that format.

Perspective from a long time Contax G system user. IMO, the G1 is ideal for travel due to size, low weight, ease to use and GOOD optics. G2 has more features and better "autofocus" and such over the G1, trade off is size-weight.

Green sticker on the G1 mean modified/updated to accept later lens offerings like the 21mm Biogon and 35mm Planar.

IMO, best lenses for the Contax G, 45mm Planar, 28mm Biogon, 35mm Planar, 21mm Biogon.

21mm Biogon has an external view finder which is Meh, after owning and using this lens for a while. Eventually, the external finder thing became such a Meh it negated the optical performance of the 21mm Biogon. 35mm Planar is GOOD.

IMO, for a two lens set, 28mm Biogon and 45mm Planar, single lens would be the 35mm Planar. This plus the small flash makes a nice light weight and small travel camera set.

Avoid the 90mm Sonnar and 35-70mm zoom, neither are all that worthy as they are not ideal with a range finder cameras. The "Holy Grail" lens would be the 16mm f8 Hologon again with external finder. Having been and done the 16mm f8, Meh, over rated ad over priced for what it is.

In time, gave up on all that went back to Canon L series for a very long list of image quality and optical reality reasons. Keep in mind range finders are another example of trade offs. If their limitations meet your image goals, they can meet those needs extremely well.

Putting Optimum Duracell AA batteries into the battery pack of the motorized SRM, and into my two Minolta SRT Electroflashes, turns them into instantaneous screamers. The flashes fully recycle 100% in four seconds! Amazing. Very pleased with the upgrade. The SRM shoots at 3.5 frames per second with reg Duracells, with the Optimum Duracells I think it's more like four frames per second. I can shoot rapid flash bursts one handed with this rig no problem. Mucho fun.

Here I'm ready to take the SRT101 (has MLU) original SRT Cable Release, and the four original filters (F16 ND, Dark Red, Orange, and Yellow). Use yellow most of the time for B&W. And the original Filter Wrench for the 80cm Filters. Nice built in tripod mount so I am starting to think about potential subjects for extreme telephotgraphy. This will be fun. BTW F8 is quite fast for a lens in reflex style of this focal length. I think Minolta was way ahead of the curve on this one! Will be great for lower light when my Wife and I go to the local birding areas around here

Today we went up to Blue Ridge, GA. Happened upon a car show, which is always fun. The sun lined up just right to get some shots glinting off the engine.

Thanks Peter, Roger, and Pali!

One more engine for you, with the 8mm f/2.8 fisheye:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZI1HMMwmBWg6lfjrDpNcJHZw9u2cbofPJc1hr3wWq2kI2_qMivDzU9krh3hDtyaIoPfF-EwCX6CSRvEhB_eLC1B2HRtG4iu6NDbUQdNMMT0ghLoVpjsb5EsmyPr5NL0QdNBvjrmOJs5l9h-Ss-7m650Y1xmoAJzFLHib5iZ4U50sGvCaHvvGPaUmH/s700/f2-9311s.jpg

If you ever wonder just how close one must get with this lens, and why I made some of the car owners nervous, check out the detail on the reflection:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe4IFrVWUdiJHRJAIOwxFLslmDHZ-ChErh0ZuwlcAgv6BkZZNw0INgUY2a6_TKkfl_tBD96zYITgwKqsNRQ973AxBD43BtDxRIjKDjWczyzwlOw89KbkamJRjp3mXC9zx8IivnJ61qxcAft_9ahjO8tXYqlQm0yzr-Fm5nZUhJcVftuGUvFd7nmNxb/s700/f2-9311detail.jpg

BTW, I've wanged the front element on things getting too close before! There's a tiny mark on it actually, from doing that, which probably makes this lens less valuable to "collectors" but it works perfectly fine for photographs and I didn't pay a zillion dollars for it luckily.

Two images, first a composite looking towards the South. Second during the eclipse looking North. Digital - Canon with 400 and 1.4 Teleconverter for the moon. Nikon with 24mm for the Aurora. Very small light show in the night sky but a nice counterpoint to the moon.

They are Rule Die Punches (https://acesteelruledies.com/)

Usually mounted in Die wood with rubber pushers and used to cut paper gaskets quickly in Fly Press

I used them to cut FujiFilm Pressure Sensitive Film (https://www.fujifilm.com/us/en/business/industrial-materials/measurement-film/prescale) by hand with small hammer

Then installed into an absolutely dry engine, any liquid ruined it

Just a preview of how little information is captured even with multiple hours of exposure. However, when you accumulate enough data, these distance giants start to show in their full glory. I am still not done with this image as some of the brighter stars don't have their true colors.

I did not know that at the time I took that photo, but when talking to Klaus Lunau he told me this: This clearly visible UV reflecting ring, formed by those shiny petals which is especially visible in reflected UV had been discovered by Prof. (em) Klaus Lunau of the University of Duesseldorf, Germany and he had published about that in NATURE 2020 here: Lunau, K., Ren, ZX., Fan, XQ. et al. I did not know that at the time I took that photo, but when talking to Klaus Lunau he told me this: This clearly visible UV reflecting ring, formed by those shiny petals which is especially visible in reflected UV had been discovered by Prof. (em) Klaus Lunau of the University of Duesseldorf, Germany and he had published about that in NATURE 2020 here: Lunau, K., Ren, ZX., Fan, XQ. et al. Nectar mimicry: a new phenomenon. Sci Rep 10, 7039 (2020). https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-63997-3

They are quite good at balancing for a bit. To reach those juicy hedgeapple leaves. Recently we had fifteen deer laying down in our backyard, some snoozing..... They must feel comfortable LOL

I have a Bambi superhighway in my backyard

so they are very nervous and run mostly

our local feral cat chases them away, that cat can run deer down

Thanks, Peter! Can't quite describe the feeling when you also look at the night sky with a telescope that can resolve so much information. It's truly breathtaking and I hope everyone gets to experience it.

Went out of my comfort zone and produced a photo with trees and moving water.
It was still good to get out in the woods for an afternoon.
