Location for that first image is less than 1/2 mile from home, one of the possible physical rehab daily walk routes. The view are is very small as it is located between two empty lots surrounded by some trees then roof of houses that limit what is possible. Lens used was the canon EF 70-300mm DO (diffractive optics)zoom which has received much controversy, yet it has become one of the faves as it is small and lightweight for what it does.

Found this drone video of this general location on YouTube:

There it is 'Lucky Bamboo'!

I have a little story, while studying Performance Art at SAIC, we all did some odd things, also called 'Live Art' in EU

I made a public giveaway project for Chicago, as I had huge bamboo growing next door. 1999. Save a Plant, Wear a Plant

PET PLANT, Save Lucky Bamboo! My advisor severely condemned the project as extremely Racist.

That was their favorite method of teaching, condemn everything, smugly

I never did the 'performance', recently the same people were dragging chains on camera all over the Loop. I know them and saw the video

It's often not what you do, it's who you f###

Thanks, Jon. You're more organized with your tools than I am. How are you liking the Z7?

I have to be organized. If I can't find a tool, nothing gets done!

I really like the Z7. The EVF takes some getting used to, but once you do, it is great. The rear LCD is much better than the one on my D810. The lens is really sharp.

The only complaint I have, is that my truck has been in the shop since before Christmas. That has put a crimp into my image making! Covid has hit the shop hard.

Tim Layton shot the digital backgrounds, I downloaded them and printed them large in color at Costco. I was taking his course on large format flower photography at the time. Playing with my FOBA DIMIL Sweep Table for shooting small still lifes in the studio. This is a digitest with my Nex-3. On my Plaubel Makiflex with 150mm f4.5 barrel Schneider Xenar, I shot four sheets each of three distinctly different emulsions; Four sheets Orwo 4x5 NP22, four sheets TMX100 Kodak Readyload, and four 9x12cm sheets of Agfa Aviphot 200. It will be interesting to see the differences.

Post divided into two as there are limits on images in single posts here). This is part 1.

Squirrels are some of the most argumentative, territorial *ssholes you might ever meet. But even so, there is sometimes a happy ending. First pic is OM-2n + 85-250mm/f5.6, and all the rest Pen-FV + 100mm/f3.5. All Superia 400.

He won't keep me off the food:

This is actually a rare scene. Squirrels will not tolerate each other at all with two exceptions - when they are in the nest as pups, or in the coldest part of the winter where they will curl up together for warmth. These two are this year's youngsters and may have been nestmates, but it's also getting cold and that may help them become somewhat tolerant. Be that as it may, the next day they were fighting noisily and at one point both fell off the feeder in a furious furball that looked like something from a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Thick soft snow cushioned the fall, and rivalry currently continues.

That's a bit of an understatement. Last year I kept finding dead squirrels in my yard. Sometimes with their abdomens chewed out, so I assumed one of the neighborhood cats was a better hunter than most. Then one day I went out to the garden shed, I heard squirrels fighting in the tree above me, as usual, I paid them no mind. Until a squirrel fell on a rock beside me, breaking his back. Turns out we have a samurai squirrel who is a good enough fighter to knock other squirrels out of the very top of trees, killing them with the fall. I've picked up 6 or 8 so far, in a smallish suburban yard.

I thought I knew how to convert to B&W, but I've been trying some different methods because I wasn't liking what I was getting lately with Nik software.
Sometimes the presets just look phony.

A bit convoluted, but it does the job.

How do you make Cubanos, Bryan? Extra sugar?
We have an older Mokita that my wife bought me for my birthday about 10 years ago.
It produces a crema that's an inch thick!

Corran
7-Mar-2022, 19:50
Neat! I've not heard of that machine, I'll have to check it out.

For Cubanos - we use Cafe Bustelo coffee of course, and after a few ounces percolate up through the moka pot I pour an ounce into each of the cups and put it back on the burner. To the ~1oz of coffee I add a teaspoon or so of turbinado sugar and use an electric milk frother / whisk to whip up the coffee and sugar mix into a thick crema. Once that's done the moka pot is about done and into each glass you carefully pour the black coffee in down the side so that it slides under the crema. Makes a delicious and sweet drink with a lot of body. Definitely strong though.

When we've visited Key West and surrounding areas we had dozens of cubanos and I tried to observe their preparation, and make something similar, along with researching articles online for methods.

Here's my Profitec:

Note to @Ari... You probably can't even buy Bustelo coffee in Ottawa, which if true is a good thing. When Corran says "definitely strong", he's understating. In my Latin neighbourhood, it's the absolute cheapest coffee you can buy. Lots of sugar is a good idea :)

For Christmas we usually have two trees up - a tall tree in the house, and a short tree out on our deck behind the house. The house tree usually comes down on Jan 1st, but the short one varies - and I must say we both love the extended feeling of "holiday cheer" that this tree continues to bring on these still-chilly/snowy nights. At any rate, we're thinking that we may just leave this tree up until the end of Lent (Palm Sunday) - also commemorating our yearly "Lenten Fast," during which we swear off alcohol, chocolate, popcorn, and a few other goodies. At any rate, a quick iPhone snap from last night of our "Tree of Christmas and Lent:"

I split a gut when I read that :)

:) We save the specialty coffee for straight espresso. I can't really do sugar in my coffee, generally, so for me Bustelo is the only coffee I've had that I can tolerate in a Cubano. Might just be me. In fact I'm in the mood for that so I'm going to go make some cubanos now!

This is the uber rare 100mm F4.2 Anticomar on the Plaubel Makina IIIR. Uber sharpness for reportage and commercial uses according to Plaubel This is "Ye Olde Ice Cream Factory in Utica, Ohio. Original mill millstone on display just to the left of the running mill. A good test in an architectural detail shot displaying the acuity of the F4.2 Anticomar Notice how precisely you can compose at the edges of the frame. Impeccable. Leica quality MF RF! BTW this lens is a Tessar design.

Last September I drove out to Big Bend (one of over a dozen trips I've made there). I was just getting back into shooting film and I had my 8x10, 4x5, Hasselblad CM503CW, an EOS 1V, and some DSLR's. All I needed was neon sign and I could've opened a store. :)

I shot some digital while hiking and used the Hasselblad and EOS IV for the following images. Film used was Velvia 50, Delta 100, Neopan 100, and Pan F Plus 50. The black and white film is waiting for me to develop it. The Velvia 50 was developed by Indie Lab. I scanned the slides with an Epson V850 Pro. I didn't shoot the 4x5 or 8x10 because I wasn't confident that I could meter and focus properly (wrong assumption). Both of my Hasselblad backs had light leaks (talk about disappointing). I found that out the hard way. You can see some evidence of the light leak in the images. These are all Velvia 50 from the Hasselblad. There's one thing that I didn't do that I wish I would have and that's document the shot data.

I spent over an hour waiting for the sun to break through the bottom of some clouds at sunset. Film does that to a man... It wasn't as spectacular as I had hoped but it's not horrible.

I cropped out some of the light leak but it's still evident

I think I cropped most of the leak from this one

https://wildlightimagingstudio.com/img/s/v-10/p3378930579-5.jpg

This one is cropped so much that I had to go find the negative. I'm sure that it was due to the light leak

Check the light trap groove between the film back and body. If the two small tab film back hooks are loose, the gap between body and film back can light leak. If the light trap grove is worn from film back on-off cycles without care of mounting the film back to body the light trap groove (near the camera ad film back bottom) can bet banged up, another possible cause of the light leak.

It is possible the light leak is from the dark slide area, this is less common, still possible.

Previously encountered all three types of light leaks on Hasselblad V series.

These are 35mm images made last October. Again, I didn't document the shots. I don't know why

This gentleman is a friend of mine from our photo club. I've learned a lot from him. He switched from film to digital a long time ago. He was very accomplished in the dark room but it's been converted to print digital images. I have no issues with that other than I missed the opportunity to learn from his decades of shooting and developing film. When we met he was shooting digital. He had just turned 80. We were "ridin around the rice fields" near home. We stopped at my favorite low water crossing and I caught him "looking for the next masterpiece".

This image is the primary reason that I go to the low water crossing. When it floods it changes. I was there with the 8x10 a few weeks ago. I have 2 exposed sheets of Delta 100 that I need to develop.

I have Delta 100 film in the backs now. I guess I'll have to sacrifice it to replace the dark slide light traps if inspecting the other bits doesn't pan out. Backs are hard to come by these days.

Do you remember the small tank that was on Sheridan heading out of HP?

and the Nike siloes on the Lakefront at Belmont?

That became a Shotgun Trap Range?

I used to go to Manitowoc Harbor for the Maritime museum, that showed Submarines made there and more

I watched them put U-505 in a hole at https://www.msichicago.org/press/press-releases/u-505-submarine/

I miss most the Replica Viking Ship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_(replica_Viking_longship)) that sailed to Chicago and stayed. I used to live right next to it, twice! Once in luxury and once is poverty

Here's another B&W conversion attempt using a different method that I rather like. On the other hand, there are a lot of variables in this method, maybe it's too much.

This is one result:

The method is described here (lots of FFing to do, he's a talker):

Yep, that's a powerful method. As he notes in the video, though, be very careful with those color controls adding artifacts, particularly banding.

Here's another step that can help when there isn't a lot of color in the but you want to have lot's of tonal separation in the BW image. Before conversion, convert the color space to LAB. Make a curves adjustment layer. Increase the slope of the A and B channel to expand the color variations, keeping the middle of the line crossing the middle of the graph. Often just moving the bottom endpoint to the right one block, and the top endpoint to the left one block, works well. You're not trying to make the image look good at this step. You're just trying to increase variation so that the color adjustment have more to work with when you convert to BW. Again, this is likely only useful when there not much color in the scene.

Thanks, Peter, very helpful.
I'm tempted to skip one or two of those steps, or maybe just keep the adjustments to a bare minimum, because at some point, the artifacts jump all over the screen.
I'd like to see your LAB conversion process with a real image., so I'm starting a new thread here: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?167931-The-B-amp-W-Conversion-Thread&p=1636971#post1636971

I do remember these things and more—I'm old too!

The Viking ship is now in Geneva, Illinois and is being conserved and is open to the public.
