I picked up a DSLR when it was attached to a lens that I wanted the other day. Been fun getting some instant feedback. This is from a 5d mkII with 24-105L lens.
I shot this and other stuff with my first roll of Acros II and its drying at the moment. Nice colours though, so I thought I'd share.

I am chuffed that the native trees around me flower and reproduce in this way... its pretty awesome!

Okay so, I'm sorry if you're bored of Andromeda. I'm not though! We had unexpectedly clear skies last night with decently low turbulence and I was able to get about 2.5 hours of good imaging. Tonight is supposed to be even better and the local observatory is open so I'll probably spend all night there or until they kick me out getting more data and trying some other images, perhaps some widefield images of our galaxy on film. Anyway, here's my latest, taken with the Nikon D800E and adapted Pentax 6x7 400mm f/4 lens:

Ultra-tiny format time! For when sensor size is a liability.

I finally did some planetary imaging, using video and "lucky imaging." I used my Celestron C8, a 2x doubler, and a ZWO ASI224MC camera I bought both for guiding duty and the occasional planet. This has a sensor about 6mm in diagonal, so that with the 2032mm telescope +2x I was imaging at I believe around 28,000mm terms of "35mm equivalent," which means nothing in astro world but is fun to think about.

I got Jupiter, its moon Io, and the shadow as Io transited. I also got Saturn and some nice definition in the rings.

Bryan,

Your image made me give it a go myself as the sky finally opened up for decent imaging after many months. My setup is way too high a focal length for this target but I like the details I got of the same galaxy. My attempt below :)

Very nice Pali! Some detail in the core area is very interesting as well.

Last night was supposed to be some of the best seeing since 2020 but...because of wildfire smoke settling into my area in the last few days I could barely see Vega and a very ruddy Moon and that's it :(.

My collection of long Pentax 67 lenses have become invaluable tools for some "wider" field images, at least compared to an SCT. I also got a field flattener for my older Celestron C8 so I think I'll try Triangulum soon, with any luck.

Pali K
13-Sep-2021, 11:27
Thank you, Bryan. I have been tweaking my workflow and I am getting better with each session and what I have found is that underexposing the frames and shooting more of them has proved to be better for highlight detail without messing up the shadows terribly.

Sorry to hear about the wildfires and not being able to get more data for your images. I think the worst of the summer gloom for Astro is over and we should be getting better and better astrophotography nights until spring next year. BTW, I am anxiously waiting for my EdgeHD 11 (back-ordered since Dec 20) because I want to go for galaxies with a mono setup soon. Should be painful but fun. :)

Nice stuff Bryan and Pauli.

Earlier this year I spent the weekend in Christmas Valley, Oregon. I got up in the middle of the night and saw the clearest sky in my life, I think. It was better than at the Alvord Dessert when I was there. I saw the Miikey Way from horizon-to-horizon and it was like a band of fog because it was so dense with stars.

EdgeHD 11

Wow! I can't imagine. You know I'm slumming it a bit with my 36-year-old C8 (I can see its failings when doing very DSO imaging), but I paid all of $400 for it along with accessories. I'm currently gunning for a bargain-priced reflector to pair with it though for a good midrange imager (I love the look of images with diffraction spikes to boot). I've been contemplating whether it'd be better to try to find a used but newer SCT, a really nice APO refractor, or a better camera to pair with whatever I'm using, an actual astro camera, perhaps an APS-C sensor one from ZWO. My gut says that glass is a better investment. Actually, currently my bank account says none of them...

Thank you, Tuco! What you described is the magic I remember from my childhood looking up at the sky. If all works out, I plan to travel to locations that have the least light pollution to witness what you mentioned.

Bryan, I really do think astrophotography is one hobby where "better equipment = better output" is a true statement. SCTs can be annoying to work with because of so many variables that have to align and be "just right" but when things do align, the results are breathtaking. My EdgeHD 8 captures 800x more light than the eye and with an eyepiece, the night sky is a magical sight. The EdgeHD 11 will be 1600x and I can't want to have my jaw on the floor when I do finally get to witness the sky through it. You're welcome to check it out if you're around DC/MD.

Corran
14-Sep-2021, 10:22
Yeah I agree with you Pali. One good thing though is it seems some folks really deep into the hobby will always buy the latest and greatest thing and sell off their old stuff cheaply, so I'm hoping maybe I'll find something like that. In the meantime, I will keep giving it a go with what I have, especially using my telephoto lenses for widefield which I really enjoy. Are you registered on the CloudyNights forum? Their classifieds are interesting.

Last night it was a fair bit clearer from smoke so I tried catching Triangulum. But my mount was doing a weird jitter - I think my balance was a bit off, and I didn't feel like doing a full autoguide setup. Results were unusable. Also the dew was terrible. My shield was working for about 30 minutes then it fogged up anyway. I have a heated shield but the power adapter was out of stock last year but I finally bought one, which should be here soon.

Would certainly love to see your setup in person if I'm back up that way. Been almost 5 years since going to DC last.

I was curious how the old CCD sensor did on bright, vibrant colors, like this red here. Just like the Leica M9 I used to have, the CCD sensor has a different look that I really like, especially on saturated colors.

What lens do you prefer for Tiny Format Macro?

Bryan has the best for some

Most of what I know about this is from https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/best-macro-lenses.htm

or should I get a VGC older Nikon 105 Macro?

Thanks Randy!

I would bet optically the two would be very close, but perhaps the "native" lens would AF better? Some may scoff at AF on macro but for moving bugs I think it's helpful sometimes. I switch back and forth depending.

On a tripod with non-moving subjects, not an issue. I'd maybe stay away from the old AIS 105mm f/4. I have one and it's not that good compared to the 55mm f/2.8, 60mm f/2.8, or 200mm f/4 lenses I have - but maybe I'm just spoiled by those and how spectacular they are. I use the 55mm the most (AF-D) as both a normal and general purpose lens, along with the occasional close-focus. Especially good for making web repros of my prints, and several artists in the area have also contracted me to make reproduction images of their artwork that is too big to scan.

Bryan

Been reading Macro NIKON for hours and looking at all options

The 2X Z Teleconverter only works on Z 70-200, interference with other Z glass

Lots of used NIKON Micro on eBay. I am going to try and wait for the Z 105 MACRO, they dropped Micro

A couple thoughts, the lens will be used on DX Z until NIKON makes an attractive Z FF, giving me 150mm, lightweight, bright video eyescreen, really good AF!

The Z 105 MACRO already went up $100! this week

The AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm/2.8D is a fantastic lens. I also have the AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm/2.8D, but have no film examples with it, as I bought it mostly for a backup digitizing system (with D850 and ES-2). I don't really know a thing about the Z system, but if the adaptor for using F lenses doesn't lose any functionality I'd have no hesitation about getting the older 105mm.

And to justify giving such an opinion in an image sharing thread, I'll just have to admit to having a pair of these:

Digitest of lighting setup Sky Blue Seamless Broncolor Beauty Light at F32 45 degrees camera left, Broncolor Balloon at a 90 degrees camera left F16 providing soft overall fill to the set. Silver Fill Panel camera light angled to 'feather' the fill. So far I have tried Hasselblad with 100mm, and also with 350 f5.6 with 8mm Extension Tube. Both TMax 100 bracketed f32 to F11. Everything shot handheld

Also I have set up 5x7 Sinar Norma with my longest LF lens, a 790mm F14 Rodenstock Apo Ronar. 47 inches of bellows draw measured/required, with 1.5 stops of Bellows Draw calculated. I'll leave it set up for a while until I am satisfied with what I have gotten. 5x7 contact prints are the goal on this one

There are a lot of listings of cameras and lenses from Japan that start out with the claim that the item is "MINT 5+" but in the description sometimes they mention the haze, fungus and balsam separation....
I was suggesting that a seller who sent a NIB lens is himself in MINT 5+ condition!

Here's a smoother example of Kentmere 400 in the Pen F. This thick stem of honeysuckle has been growing at our house in NS for 35 years. It came from a cutting that my mother had grown elsewhere in NS, and also at several homes in the UK. Curiously, it was an illicit cutting stolen at a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the 1930's when one of my forebears had done something civic-minded and was rewarded with an invitation. It still flowers each year and we will be sure to take cuttings to the new house.

It is good to have two Makiflex Standards at this point. This camera is great for specialty lenses and anything really wide (around 120mm or so).

Really enjoying all the photos here. Just looking through some Ektachrome slides from 20 or so years ago and remembered that I was quite enthusiastic about trying out the my new (at the time) Rokkor 100mm f/4 macro lens on my Minolta XD-11. This is the kind of thing I was getting in my back yard:

Then I ran across this one that was apparently an accidental trip of the shutter. I prefer the accidental one to the intentional one ;-)

Peter and Randy,

Thanks for the feedback on the focus stacking. I should have mentioned that using Photoshop CC to process the stack did not work well. I got 'ghosting' in the image. Blurry spots between foreground and background intersections of the image. Based on a suggestion from the Nikon Café, I tried Helicon Focus. It worked first time without fail. I guess Photoshop is not always the best.

The Xenotar is battered and bruised (it came from a ballistics testing company I think) but I like to shoot with this only in wide-open mode. If I want to stop down there are much better choices at my disposal.

Good one, Bryan!

Thanks Peter! The next night I got this with my C8. Need to try my 400mm + a 2x TC instead as the C8 even with a field flattener doesn't quite hold up.

Here is a Plaubel Makina "action shot". I was rocking back and forth while looking through the rangefinder, trying to get the left eye closest to me in sharp focus. And of course the horses were excited and constantly moving about, not so easy to do with this type of camera! But here it is.......... I think I was using the 100mm F4.2 lens, I was trying it out for the first time.

This group of images reminds me of my travel to india. Precisely the image of the flowers. It was a very beautiful time! At that time it was really difficult to get the e-visa to india (https://www.usetraveltips.com/how-get-e-visa-india/).

After a three year break from C-41, I did a roll of Portra 400 today, using the room temperature technique. Scanned RAW with Nikon 9000, and ColorPerfect (in PhotoLine, not PS) used to invert. All had a bit of extra purple that had to be adjusted with temperature and tint. But it was quite easy, and takes longer. Perhaps the next roll should be done at 102ºF so I can compare the colour casts.

Thanks! I'll do another Portra 400 at the usual temp and compare. The crossover type cast could not be fixed in all frames, skin tones were a bit yellowish and greenery was originally purple and after adjustment got as far as brown, but never actually green. This isn't good enough to tolerate all the time. I knew there was a good reason why I've stuck to B&W for the last three years!
