Peter, a Grand Pyrenees, if I am not mistaken. I used to care for one that was the smartest dog I have ever known -- after she trained me, on her terms.
Handsome portrait.

Thanks, Philip. Yep, Cotton is a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. I went around the house to try to get a photograph of a neat bird. Alas, it was gone, but when I turned around, Cotton was watching me. I don't think I'll do too much more handholding the 300 f/2.8, but I'm happy how this turned out.

There was a huge rainstorm a couple weeks ago and I found the local state park had a huge flooding event of some sort, that radically washed away and reconfigured the rocks and banks on Amicalola Creek. I'm excited to look around with my LF camera but I squeezed in a few shots with the Widelux Sunday evening in a new spot that used to be overgrown and almost impossible to get to.

Oh I see, yes mine luckily works fairly well on that front. Sometimes it has a dark band here or there but if I exercise the swing a bit between each roll it works right on.

It looks good, Bryan. I took my Noblex out for a warmup roll last week. The camera's viewfinder has a 'notch' in it where for about a 1/4 of the frame you can see more height in the view. I can never remember if the extra view is part of the captured frame.

Nice tuco! I thought the notch showed the extra bit when engaging front rise? The Widelux frame is not very accurate.

Thanks. I don't see anyway to raise the lens. The Noblex's viewfinder is not very accurate too. I think it's time to find a manual and refresh my memory.

Corran

Might be that they copied the design between models. I have the Noblex 150U with rise and I thought I read that, about the notch, but I could be wrong.

I read the manual. My copy of the camera (maybe worn off) does not have the lettering to show the rise/fall. But I do see white dot moving up and down when I change the aperture to f16 or f4.5. It's a cumbersome method. Long fingernails almost a must. There is so much friction to change aperture it inadvertently will raise and drop the lens when you rotate the aperture wheel and subtle to notice. That explains a lot on some framing. Thanks for the heads up.

Really like the raised pier shot. Nice composition with the foreground. I have been searching for a close-up filter for my Widelux because at some point I think someone reset the focus point to close to infinity rather than ~15ft like it was originally, so I always have very soft photos when shooting a prominent foreground element, even at f/11.

Thanks for the input. It had a hotrod paint job. I'd expect some part swapping. But those running lights looked to me to be in the 70's for sure. It seems from 1960-1980s the running lights kept getting larger with time.

Such a cool little car. Always been a fan of the beetles, especially the older models with the tiny tail lamps and those funky directional signals that would pop out from the body. The Karmann Ghia was also another cool one...sadly, never owned either.

Generally I don't sell well at the local festivals. Perhaps the ability to go out and actually shop frivolously finally helped!

Yeah, I like the series too. The Las Vegas set of her walking in the Hotel Mariposa and up the stairs was a really good scene. I kept looking for the camera operator's shadow when she entered the hotel.

A tornado swept through our neighbourhood two years ago. The adjoining forest was partially destroyed, as were numerous houses, some only 50 yards from ours.
It may not look like it, but the forest is bouncing back.

Ha, "far north" to me means Baffin Island, or Inuvik.
I live in the south. :)

Anyway, it wasn't a big one, but it did a lot of damage. Luckily, no fatalities.
I doubt anyone outside of the eastern Ontario region heard about it.

Randy and Tuco: Thanks! I'm always happy when a photo op is about 100 yards from my house. :)

Ari, that must've been scary! In 1996 I was teaching one night in Green Bay, which is a little over an hour drive north from our house. Back home, the ladies and the dogs had to take cover in the basement. A nearby town was hit by a F5 tornado. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Oakfield_tornado_outbreak

Bryan, you're on! I haven't been east of Texas.
Peter, our house shook, we ran for the basement, and it really felt like a jet plane had landed on our roof.
We walked out to find the house down the street was missing its roof. Farther along, a street known for its 100-foot-tall tree canopy had lost every single tree, with some destroying the house they sat next to.
I know what your family went through.
Apparently, this did get noticed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_United_States–Canada_tornado_outbreak
We're in Arlington Woods, we had an EF2 tornado.

At this site, white crosses dot the forest and marshland signifying the location of the fallen. After the battle on Valentine's Day in 1779, apparently the dead were buried where they fell by some of the Loyalists who were then freed. A few years ago ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs were used to locate some of these sites. Dang, I started getting this vertical density streak near the middle of the frame and more noticeable at slower shutter speeds. But my last roll more of them started showing up on the frame. It turns out it is the wheel that rotates the lens. It has a rubbery friction material on it. And the motor's shaft rotates the wheel by friction only (no gears). The friction material has become brittle. Cracks and small pieces have come off causing the motor's shaft to hit these indents/cracks slowing the rotation down momentarily. I'd think a modern version of this style of camera could be made with a stepper motor!

Got back late last night from a full week in Florida. We stayed in multiple locations and did the whole "loop" on both the Gulf and Atlantic side, and all through the Keys. Totaled up 10 rolls of 35mm, 4 rolls of 120, about 12 sheets of 4x5 and 5 sheets of 12x20. Lots of work to do and last night I quickly souped my fast 35mm and went to bed after setting up the scanner for the first 2 rolls.

So forgive the forthcoming flurry of Florida fotos ;).

I cannot wait, to see all!

Never been and never will make it to '0"

just looked up this horrible story, from https://www.keywesttravelguide.com/end-of-us1-mile-marker-0/
"...Interesting note: the mile marker zero sign, the green and white sign in the picture, has been trademarked by an aggressive local t-shirt shop owner after an extensive and eye-brow raising million-dollar court battle. Yet another chapter in the sordid history of distasteful t-shirt shops blemishing Duval Street."

Thanks Randy and Dugan!

I'll have to take a look at what that lawsuit was about, out of curiosity. We went in that store briefly; didn't buy anything. Our Key West souvenir was a print from a local artist - a stylized rooster painting, along with a few natural objects we found around the beaches (we like to find interesting stuff and make little shadow boxes from our trips).

A couple outside of Key West, on various keys and boardwalks off Overseas Hwy:

Two Widelux images. First, from the undergrowth near Caspersen Beach in Venice, FL, just down the road from the Clyde Butcher gallery:

We hung out here as we waited for Clyde. He had a gift for me - several boxes of TMX film, of the ULF variety!
Anyway, the next day we headed to the Keys. On the way, we traveled through the scenic Loop Road in the Big Cypress Preserve (just south of his gallery there). It was a rainy day and we were getting chased by mosquitoes and flies every time we stepped out of the car, but I managed to shoot this:

Good for you, I thank Clyde!

So now I know where all the mosquitoes went

We used to have many here and it has been very wet as usual, but I have only seen one tiny mosquito this year. a month ago

There is a worry that bugs are down, which hurts birds and plants

Our water level is up

Regarding the water - I was told by a local that it had been very dry. Last time I was here, it was exceedingly wet and very high water, but I was told that that, too, was unusual!

I've long since left the mosquitoes behind in south GA - we get very few up here in the mountains. So I'd forgotten about the hazards and we only had some light plant-based spray. I don't like DEET - because of its toxicity but also because it melts plastic. Not a great combination with film holders, as I've discovered!

Very different part of Florida - this is American Beach, near Jacksonville, on our way home. Taken with Bessa L and Voigtlander 15mm, on FP4+:

DEET melts plastics? Wow, that's good to know! Thanks.

From Wikipedia:
"DEET is an effective solvent,[7] and may dissolve some watch crystals,[4] plastics, rayon, spandex, other synthetic fabrics, and painted or varnished surfaces including nail polish. It also may act as a plasticizer by remaining inside some formerly hard plastics, leaving them softened and more flexible. DEET is incompatible with rayon, acetate, or dynel clothing."

I once had some DEET get on a Fidelity 4x5 film holder, and part of the darkslide pull melted and bonded to the body of the film holder. I had to carefully cut the bonded area so I could get the darkslide out - carefully! Since I had exposed film in it :).

Nice one tuco. I discovered my Widelux at 1/15th is banding really badly suddenly :(. Seems as though none of these cameras can stay working nicely for long. Previous owner just had it CLA'd before I got it. At least 1/125 still works. I'll have to try massaging the shutter for a while at 1/15th and see if I can get it working better.

Thanks. Yeah, I have some shutter speeds worse than others when it comes to banding. When I need shutter speeds longer than 1/30th, I'll do multiple exposures at a faster shutter speed when I can (eg no excessive wind or moving things in the scene).

tuco. I had one of those. 1974, $200, a real hotrod

It was yellow with Tweety Bird sticker, owned by a college age lady

Nobody would buy it

A very spirited car, I seldom put the top up

Today the wife and I took a walk at the local state park and since it's warmed up considerably I decided to give another go at shooting some underwater images. I recently got a cute little tripod with a max height of about 6" (yes inches) which makes it ideal for this. Both taken with my Nikonos V and 15mm f/2.8 lens on Foma 400:

It's hard since I'm just guessing at composition and a lot of images are just grey nothing because of the moving and unclear water. Definitely not ideal or recommended conditions but fun trying to get something interesting.

Scanning my second roll and I think this is my favorite from the day. Will have to try printing this to see how it looks as a finished print. The moving bubbly water on the top is from a small waterfall/cascade rolling over a fallen log.

One way for finding more color is Don Marquis' method: Convert the file to LAB. Create an adjustment layer. Make the A and B graphs steeper by moving the lower corner to the right and the upper corner to the left. Do this for both of the A and the B channels to taste. Change the layer's blending mode to 'color'. Adjust the opacity of the layer to taste. Flatten and convert to your RGB working space. Sorry if you already heard of this. What it does is increase the separation between the colors in the image, and it can be very good for intensifying colors in an image.

Here's a screen shot of the first step of Don's method:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ilymxfkmb9lcqvk/lab.PNG?raw=1

Here's another way, the Joseph Holmes method. This will only work if you editing space is one of the middle or smaller color spaces. Suppose the image is in sRGB. Edit>Assign Adobe 1998 to the image. This will intensify colors. Now edit>convert the image back to your working space. Joe had a whole bunch of special spaces for doing this. I usually use Adobe 98 or Ektaspace. If your editing space is Adobe 98 or PRophoto, then you'll need to convert to sRGB for the web. So do that conversion, and then try Joe's method.

... Convert the file to LAB... Change the layer's blending mode to 'color'...
If Lightness channel is kept as-is , non-modified, then changing the layer's blending mode to 'Color' makes no difference compared to "Normal" blending. Likewise if the changes are done only to Lightness channel, then both Normal and Luminosity blending modes have identical effect.

That's a good point. I just always do this when I'm adjusting colors with a curves adjustment layer, as I'm not normally in LAB.

Nice one. We have them come through the yard fairly often but they are super skittish. A few times we've come home at dusk and there's been half a dozen in the side yard, and they bound into the brush as soon as we park the car.

Speaking of wildlife, this little guy was on the trail later that day, and so I popped my 35mm f/2 onto the F5 and aimed it roughly where he was at ground level, pretty close to him. He was not impressed.

I recently stumbled across a converter that allows me to use my Hasselblad lenses on my Nikon cameras. My first impulse was, "But WHY???!!!???" Then again, it was so cheap, I decided to give it a try. That was six months ago. Last night I got bored, saw it laying in the Nikon case and decided to hook it up to the D750 and see what it could do. These are all with the D750, using a Sonnar 250mm f5.6.

That long winding road is my driveway. The telephone pole with the cross beams in the distance is at the corner where it dumps out onto the county road. Now you know why I stay home when it snows.

The dog is named Randy. What makes this shot so rare isn't the composition (which quite frankly, sucks). But rather that he held still long enough for me to get the shot with that monster rig. A couple of weeks ago when I went out to feed the dogs, He ran around the house at about 25 miles an hour. Couldn't call him in...he's deaf as a stone. On his way by, I tried to motion him in. He kept going. After EIGHT laps around the house, he finally came up to get his dinner. And when I say 25mph, it's no exaggeration. We clocked him, all the way up the driveway aforementioned, and he kept up with us all the way to the end, and during the smooth part, we hit 30mph...which is WAY to fast for that driveway.

The last is the same tomato vine I used to test the Bronica (which I still haven't given back, by the way...I better either pay him for it or take it back. Probably the latter.). Only the tomatoes are riper.

What is perhaps the world's oldest extant No Parking sign, in Segovia, Spain. It says, in effect, "Carriages left in this plaza will be subject to a fine of 5 pesetas". I believe the sign is 18th century, which would make 5 pesetas a LOT of money.

Hasselblad 500c/m, 120 Makro-Planar (iirc- it's been 17 years since I shot the photo, so you'll forgive me if I don't remember which lens I used). Bergger 200 film souped in PMK Pyro.

Self-portrait at the Iglesia de San Martin, from the intersection of Calle Juan Bravo and Calle Jose Canalejas. An architectural hodge-podge, with Romanesque design predominating and Mudejar elements visible, the church is unusual with three naves and the largest Romanesque arched door in Spain. It also is surrounded on three sides with an arcaded portico.

The church was built in 1117, but is far from the oldest thing in Segovia. That would probably be the aqueduct, which was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, and was in use into the late 1970s when the town had grown sufficiently that the aqueduct could not supply enough water any more. The aqueduct is a true engineering marvel - the only mortar in the entire structure is in the water channel at the top. Cars could drive under it into the 1990s, when they closed the plaza and several streets feeding off it to traffic. Between the vibrations from the vehicles and the diesel exhaust, they were causing escalating damage to the aqueduct.

Last night was finally clear and I worked on shooting the Andromeda Galaxy again from about 2am till dawn. I combined all the images from last night with additional ones from September last year and was able to make this image, which I'm quite happy with:

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mwPl7R0cO9k/YRBNLYPU_LI/AAAAAAAAN3A/GJt-KR1J0uAYsIl4rv9I1ptI2mX3t59rgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1000/test-multinight-9x13-digen.jpg

There's plenty of better M31 images but I'm getting better, I think. The multi-night stacking seems to really help. I will continue to "add data" to this stack as the year progresses.

On another note I did some preliminary tests shooting this on Fuji Instax. I should be able to get a good result but I need about 4 hours of imaging time. Hopefully that will happen soon.

I discovered I can manually put one sheet of Instax Square directly on the rails of my Pentax 67. It fits, and exposes all but two small strips on the left/right of the image (the Instax is nominally 60x60 I think). You have to carefully slip out a sheet from the box after loading it into a normal Instax camera (eliminating the dark slide), in the dark of course, and put it (oriented correctly!) into the Pentax - then put it back into the box after exposure and shoot a "blank" image to send it through the rollers. This may work in other cameras - perhaps in a 6x7 back or even a 2x3 film holder for the little baby Century Graphics, haven't tried since I'm using my 400mm or 500mm lenses on the Pentax.

One of my most recent astro pics, noting that Corran is showing some nice stuff here!
I sort of stopped astro once I started with "terrestrial" photography, but I'm sure I'll get out amongst it again.

This is a narowband image of the central portion of Carina nebula, including the star Eta Carinae. I don't really recall the details, but I typically using 4min exposures and stacked 4 to 18 hours of them. Darks applied, no flats or biases. Camera was a ZWO 1600mm pro with 7nm ZWO filters. Scope was a 1000mm focal length F5 newtonian, guided but not dithered.

We got there just after the wedding took place, and I was able to duck in an take a quick 3 photos. You probably already know about this photographer of sailing vessels and ships, but if not check out Beken of Cowes (https://www.beken.co.uk).

They are masters of the genre, with an extraordinary library. I once had the opportunity to go through their collection of glass plates, which they used up to the 1970s. I have a print of their 1935 photograph of the Canadian schooner Bluenose.
