Shot just now, my family Covid visit 40 ft apart, no masks, we cheered each up. They are on the way to Florida to be outside and isolated.

We talked about the 2024 April 8 eclipse near me. The father was here for the last one.

God Bless us all, everyone!

Instant prints, mounted and framed to 8x10. A limited series I'm doing for Christmas here in the gallery.

Taken with my Diana Instant Square camera on Instax film, with either the 38mm or 55mm lenses:

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2NP_tcN7g7E/X9wC4n7ZsnI/AAAAAAAANNo/nZeyVgyX0L0k7W_w1KDlhoZxDaFdYjf9gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1250/dah-chr-20-3.jpg

Second one looks a bit blurry due to the cell phone shot, oops. But anyway, I love mounting these like this, so I'll have to experiment with Instax prints more. I also am going to make a triptych in a panoramic mat.

Love that 2nd photo Bryan.

Instead of the talk of new years eve traditions, and partying or lack thereof, I dressed up such that I'd be warm for an hour standing still in the calm freezing weather. That meant long pants and a jacket. I took my daughter to the shore and we photographed the moon and stars. I have upgraded from a D600 to a D810 which does better in these situations.

Garrett,
Nice series of Tumacacori Mission. The rear area of the Church and smaller chapel are more photographic than the front IMO. I was there around 1993 when "Boys on the Side" was being filmed. When I walked thru the Visitor Center Door the entire front area of the church had sets made up for a carnival night setting, lights and cables were everywhere. Needless to say, it was impossible to even try to shoot the front. I walked around the side and back and found it to be more photogenic. Oh, how I long to get back there.
Regards,
Pat

Scott, the sky and grass make that last photos a pretty nice mix of photo qualities.

Before Christmas, lensbaby was selling lenses for about 1/3 off. I bought the velvet56 which I've wanted for a while. It's got some possibilities.. Not quite as precise and rich as a large format soft focus, but still very inspired by it.. I'm going to leave it on the camera for a few weeks and see what it can do. Finally got some sunshine and snow, so I went out, even though it was cold.

Not so much soft but straight up out of focus and stopped down a bit.. I like the paint by number style sometimes, as well as studying the values and colors.

Still working on scanning a box of old slides. A bridge over the Delaware River, looking at PA from the NJ side. Shot back in the very late 70's on either Kodachrome 64 or 5247 (an old movie film stock), just can't recall for sure. Taken with my still-functioning Canon AE-1. I'm betting the camera outlasted the bridge.

Sand Beach in Stonington Maine. I went there for work again (installing electronics on boats), and took my cameras for some after work exploration. Too windy for LF. Temperature in the teens and wind was very steady, so it was probably <0f wind chill. Used my Nikon d810 with Sigma35 and Velvet56 lenses. 2nd photo I love to see sunshine on ice and think of the pictorialists using their imagination with the bright glowy spots.

Being long inside the house during lock down, I wanted to try something on the table with a fully black background. I thought, ok what is nice to put in front of such a background, and since brass may light up quite well, I took my little collection of brass lenses as a subject.
Although I had some nice results with artificial lights, the once shot with natural daylight came out better with respect to color rendition and contrast. I made one attempt with flash, but that ruined the background.

(if you click on the picture, you find some info on the different lenses)

My story for this: after getting neck-deep in film and large format photography, regular ol' digital DSLR shooting gets pretty boring. To have some fun, I decided, OK, going to use only this one simple lens, and no RAW files. So, I put my trusty Industar 50-2 50mm f/3,5 Soviet Tessar style lens on the D800 with the image area set to 5:4, and set the file format to TIFF with the Monochrome color setting. Walked around Danby State Forest and got a roll full of great pics, my favorite being this:
213142
Which, I later printed as an Argyrotype and presented in a solo exhibition with the name "Blasted Twins." You can see a scan on my website. But here is a jpeg straight from the original tiff for everyone to see. Wasn't even trying for it, but I nailed the hyperfocal focus with that lens. It can be a miracle worker when it hits the sweet spot. Made digital shooting fun again.

'Via' carries her original Volvo B-18 4-cyl; rated at 115hp in 1966. The previous owner replaced the original twin SU carbs with a 2-choke downdraft Weber, which probably won't make any difference in power.
Short story is that I inherited the car from the estate of my oldest friend, who'd owned it for 21 years; the last ten of which it spent in his gravel-floored, falling-down garage in Rochester NY. It came west on a truck, and it's only lately that I have any money to throw at it. So it will be a project for a while- but i hope to have her running in a couple of weeks. I found this bullet in a wall inside my condo building

It was fired from 3rd floor window from across the alley through condo second floor glass brick and stopped in drywall behind an open door

Not a random shot as that house was used for many years for alley drug sales

The last straw for me and I soon sold my condo and moved rural

I saw many dead from aimed bullets over the 13 years I owned the condo

Hi Mark

Does the car have a single or two reverse gears ?

The Mk2 version of the 180 in Europe had 2 reverse gears - for when you drove up a forest track and found it blocked you might have to reverse 30~40 miles back to a road wide enough to turn around on.

Cheers

Martin

Mark Sampson

Martin- never heard of that, and my experience with old Volvos goes back to the late '70s (when the ones I and my cohort drove were cheap, rusty beaters). This car was sold new in San Diego, California, and has only one reverse gear. But Volvo ran a magazine ad back in the day that showed the 1800 splashing down a muddy track in the woods with the headline "Driving isn't bad for it".
She goes to the shop today for some repairs I can't do, so should be running soon- for the first time since 2008. Luckily my wife wants to see it operational and to drive it- and my 4x5 kit will fit in the trunk!

It's been a minute. Haven't had a lot of photography happening lately. Been a bit stressed out and a lot of projects happening of late and haven't been motivated when I have free time to shoot.

It was too nice of a day to waste though so after work we headed up to the local state park and hiked up to Amicalola Falls.

Nikon F4, 8mm f/2.8 circular fisheye, and testing some ancient Panatomic X I got from a friend:

12.5 Hours Exposure of Messier 101 (The Pinwheel Galaxy)

You've made some impressive work already! I finally made an image I am fairly happy with of my favorite star cluster, the Pleiades. The weather the last few months have just been atrocious, and/or the moon is out, and/or my work schedule means I have to get up at 5am so I simply can't stay out all night shooting...but this evening it was okay, though windy. If I'm lucky I can shoot this weekend, perhaps up at the highest point in GA which is a stargazer hangout.

I think you're right about the light. Maybe the humidity is similar, being next to large bodies of water and the way light seems to "seep" into everything and everywhere? :)

Tuscany feels similar to me, though it has to be the dust in Italy since places like Florence are so far inland.

Nice, Austin. That first one I wouldn't have known it was police and protesters/rioters if you didn't mention it.

When last in Halifax 2009 the best restaurant I could find had terrible lobster

Seems they sell the good ones elsewhere

as I got far better in Chicago

as a child I would not eat it and only played with them

Hope you enjoy the first lobsters of the season! My youngest daughter lives in Hammonds Plains and always makes me envious by sending photos of her and husband savouring the first lobsters of the season.

Sadly, last year I developed a new allergy to seafood, and dare not eat one. Curiously though, I have since acquired an entirely new immune system with the bone marrow transplant—so perhaps one day I'll be brave enough (with an Epipen close to hand) to see if that allergy has disappeared along with the old cadre of lymphocytes. In the meantime, more Tri-X in Diafine:
