Good morning, Ken. The effect of the light edge coinciding with the boundary of the DOF is intriguing. The interplay of the geometry with the irregular incidentals of the human hand, such as the brush strokes, or the wood grain, or the counterpoint of the milled step edge with the carpet's curve and texture profile, give the eye an enjoyable "walk" around the place. One of your better detail images, in my view.

This is my favorite photo/print from a trip I made in January 2017. I made a series of prints from this trip back when I first built my darkroom but never matted them. They've been on the bottom of my print box for years, so while making a bulk order for mats I finally got around to getting some of the right size for these and will probably find a home for them somewhere in my house, as they were more for "me" than for the art festival circuit.

Try just leaving 1/2 to 1/3 of the sprocket holes in on top and bottom of the frame. I would like to see how that would affect the overall feel.

I think I found what is more popular on FB than dogs and infants and fake news... Lighthouses and moons... My D600 and 300/2.8, cropped. I photographed the moonrise the other night with some planning help from The Photographer's Ephemeris, and figured I'd get a few dozen likes and a handful of shares. I don't try real hard on facebook since I don't love it... >2000 shares later and it was also on statewide evening news weather report.

Yes, that would be interesting. I had expected periods of clouds and sun, but the clouds won that day. I'll be back. The interior is said to be spectacular; unfortunately, the Department of Homeland Security shares the building with other agencies, so it's not likely that I'll see it.

I enjoy the complexity of the first image. All those lines and the hint of razorwire down in the right hand corner. And, of course, the flag hanging from the crane anchors the scene.

The second image reminds me of two people doubled over. The three chrome bars are suggestive of something perhaps violent.

Nice to see someone actually using the Photavit - always enjoyed the square format cameras (like the Tenax/Tenax II/Robot cameras). I sort of want one, but I don't need another rabbithole - too many already. In comparision, the 24x36 looks like a panorama. :)

I remember vividly as a child seeing Comet Hale-Bopp, and I've wanted to see another bright comet ever since. NEOWISE is not that level of brightness, but it was plainly visible with the naked eye. Absolutely spectacular through some astronomical binoculars.

On a bit of an astro kick.
Here's a photo of most of Scorpius (my birth constellation). Antares (the heart of the Scorpion) is a favorite star of mine. I brought out the constellation stars here a bit:

Thanks Peter. Indeed, and I really don't have the proper tools. I was able to do better with Andromeda as I recently got a huge heavy-duty tripod that is much less susceptible to vibrations from the shutter. I am wondering if that smudge to the lower-right is the dwarf galaxy M110 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_110#/media/File:M31_09-01-2011.jpg) possibly, which is neat.

Now I'm looking at telescopes again...$$$

Which tripod did you get?

A heavy-duty surveying tripod (I used to have one years ago but gave it away, which I have since regretted) and more importantly, a Ries A250 head. Puts my Manfrotto 55 XPROB and 3-way head to shame...but I wouldn't want to carry this much further than my yard ;). Will probably be good for my 8x20, though I need to get a 1/4" screw for the head rather than the 3/8" it came with. Currently $90 though from Ries, for a screw :(.

Corran, that comet is badass. I didn't know about it. I love seeing the sky wonders. Last July I slept out to watch the meteor shower. I was near Pecos,Tx and the company truck was too cramped to sleep in.

About an hour after sunset, to the northwest. You just need to be somewhere high or clear with no trees (that's an issue, for us) so you can see near the horizon, about 10 degrees above.

Tonight my wife and I are driving up into the mountains for another attempt, the last one we will be able to get as rain/clouds will be hitting us for the rest of the month it seems. Bringing my 4x5 too.

I've never had much luck with meteor showers. Either poor visibility or just not many to see.

A month or two ago I splurged and bought the Sigma 20mm art lens for sky scenes.... The f1.4 is great for night scenes. Otherwise there are countless wide angle lens options for less.

Thanks. Yours is quite a bit more story-telling and different! Glad you did that as well. I shot from about 10 to 11 pm and the rest of the scene except for comet became darker and more starry as time went on.

Thanks Randy and Jason (and Peter!)! I'm glad this worked out - the clouds looked poor at 9pm and I thought we weren't going to see much. It cleared just in time to see the comet for a bit, though the other early morning viewing I got was much more impressive. And yes the story-telling aspect was fun.

Funny story, this big group of photographers are all a family and they recognized me from another day where we met due to the "old bellows camera" (I had my Linhof out there too just in case I wanted to get a wide shot, but just shot some of the sunset).

I also had fun showing some of the other folks that showed up a much better view through my astronomical binoculars, and pointing out some constellations and details. We also saw a fly-by of the ISS unexpectedly. Might have started a fascination with astronomy in a few younger children with that, just like me with Hale-Bopp when I was young.

On a related note, I've committed to buy a vintage Celestron C8 telescope (Super C8 Plus model made the same year I was born) from an old friend of mine. Gotta go pick it up when I can drive a few hours south. It'll be nice to do some more planetary imaging with the right tool, and actually have a tracking mount, something I've wanted for a long, long time.

Milky way with Saturn and Jupiter. Jupiter was sparkling like the moon in the ocean reflection. The milky way made some reflection as well. Birch Point Beach state park.

Another photographer a few years ago mentioned this park is one of the few places where he can't see any houses from the beach... (There are a couple lights in the distance on the islands of well hidden camps that aren't casually visible in the daytime; there is no electricity out there) Makes all the nicer place to visit at night.

In the 1960's and earlier this beach was a party spot just beyond the reach of the law.. Late 60's it was considered a spot for a nuke plant because of the cold water access; that plan fell through. Now, it's a real nice simple state park and everyone wants it to stay that way.

Thanks Corran....This was just 2 weeks ago. Usually we see these conditions of the NE Fl. coast during the summer, but this time we had offshore storms pretty much every afternoon. Only a couple made it to shore and then only in the late afternoon early evening hours.

Thanks Jon...After spending a week in Paris, where we experienced snow and cold and freezing drizzle, it was nice to be in Marseille under sunny skies and temps in the mid upper 70's. Walk along the corniche was very relaxing. This was a section lined with some very nice villas leading towards the old ancient port of Marseille.

Testing out some TMax 100 ( Plaubel Makina 670 BTW. 14min in Pyrocat at 20C). Very nice smooth, long tonal range and fine grain. Print on Ilford Classic FB. I think this film will do the trick for me in larger prints (from medium format) when i'm after a smoother look than my favourite FP4+. Doesn't seem quite as clinical as Acros & definitely not contrasty like Pan F

Nice subject! If it's nearby, visit it after some snow in late afternoon winter light.. I used to have a 200yo cottage on my property with white paint and clapboards like that and it was an awesome subject to photograph through the year and in different light.
