Very cool photos Michael; I like the energy in the water in the 2nd photo, and I always like having the sun in photos.

Below is partly inspired by one of my photography heroes, Aaron Siskind. He photographed at the fishing docks in Gloucester MA with various nautical-industrial objects to make abstract photos in B&W. I've long thought it would be fun to go find his tripod holes, but in reality, the cool photos come to me without much travel. I just have to have my eyes open.

I was on a job yesterday, hopping off a boat at the dock and saw this. I hopped back on the boat and made a cell phone photo, then wondered why I did not see the photo when I was getting on the boat earlier. There was a lot of working going on and people coming and going, so I did not have an opportunity to employ a medium or big sized camera for this. Maybe another day I'll be invited back for more work and it will be quieter and conditions might align for a variation of this with another camera.

I was thinking Hawaii, and I see once I clicked through to the Flickr image, I was correct. Very cool - I had a friend who was doing a series of oil paintings there during the eruption. I thought it would be really neat to photograph.

You got it. I was in Greenville with my wife for a conference but went out to Ellicott for the day. Chattooga might be a good longer backpacking trip. That one is my fav I think from the weekend.

Within minutes I took this picture with no photoshop, it's the new Spacex flight suit and that is my full size bicycle that only reaches the top of the boot.

Snow came the last of September and has unexpectedly not melted yet. This is sub-artic climate, but even the locals are a bit surprised that it came this early this year.

The sun is preparing for it's vacation in December, in which I'll experience my first polar night. The northern lights are quite impressive and we'll have many, many more. Life is good.

It was fun to shoot and easy to carry around. But the controls make the camera unnecessarily frustrating to operate. I rarely complain about the ergonomics of a film camera's interface. But when something is as - dare I say - bad as this camera's controls, I gotta say common sense completely escaped that camera's design team.

Nice shot, Chris. We don't have squirrels in Aust., but I love animals and he's cute. Is he a red squirrel or grey? I believe in England the imported grey squirrel has just about wiped out the native red due to disease it carries that the red has no immunity to.

Original 35mm Tri-X negative shot probably around 1969. Grossly underdeveloped back then, wouldn't even print on Agfa #6. While back scanned the negative and created a digital negative that I could finally contact print with.

Figured I'd embrace the cold and many hours of darkness this evening. Went for a refreshing walk with the tripod on my back. Walked a mile to get warmed up, then headed to the shore and set up the tripod. No moon, so the stars show nicely. D600, 35mm @ f1.6, 30s and iso3200.

Thanks Peter. I visited the Space and Rocket center when I was very young, in Scouts, and was excited to go back and see the Saturn V and other rockets on display. The 8mm fisheye is always an interesting lens to play with.

I used a Sony A7RII and a 55mm Micro-Nikkor f/2.8 (www.kennethleegallery.com/html/tech/index.php#MicroNikkor) lens with a short extension tube.

At 1:1 magnification, depth of field is very shallow. The image was made from 54 separate exposures (each at a slightly different point of focus), combined afterwards using Helicon Focus (https://www.heliconsoft.com/) software.

On a "full-frame" digital sensor cropped to the 4x5 ratio, a 55mm lens gives the same basic angle of view as a classic 9-inch portrait lens on 4x5: my favorite :o

If image quality it not a major priority, you can get fish eye lenses that clip on your cell phone camera for $10-30. Sorta like a clothes pin with a lens on it. Lots of fun. Better than lomo quality. A wide angle lens made for crop sensor used on a full frame digital camera might also have a round image, like the old 12-24 AFS dx lens on a fx camera.

One of the things I enjoy about Winter is that you can take the time to sit in a chair and shoot a subject like this, exploring different compositions and approaches.

It reminds me of my first excursion with Fred: we went shooting in a cemetery, where he showed me how moving the tripod just a few inches changes the image dramatically. Here, it's a matter of millimeters.

The Battle of Kettle Creek was one of the most significant battles in GA during the Revolutionary War. The Kettle Creek Battleground Historic Site is nestled between Athens and Augusta GA and is rather off the beaten path, especially considering the wealth of Civil War historical sites nearby in Washington, GA (where the Confederacy was dissolved and the Civil War effectively ended).

I visited the site today and discovered it to be quite fascinating, especially the graves. Apparently after the battle, the deceased were buried in shallow graves right where they had fallen. In 2016 an archaeological survey was performed where they identified about two dozen grave sites, which were marked with bright white crosses. These crosses dot the marshy, waterlogged area of Kettle Creek among the tall slash pines, themselves like grave markers, especially in the vicinity of a summit area where an old church once stood (this area itself was home to a long-forgotten cemetery). From the summit one can see the crosses glinting in the morning sun in the lower marshland which is impassable without good boots and perhaps a machete.

I made a number of photographs but was quite happy with this one, which I definitely will be printing in the darkroom.

When I take my DSLR in the woods sometimes, it's tight and I want a wider angle lens than what's on the camera, but I still like the thin DOF I'm used to without going wide. So I stitch a few photos together shot with my 35mm prime to get the wider view. This is 3-4 photos. It would probably look nicer on portra160, but I'm happy with it.

Thank you, Pat. This is a photograph that composed itself. I only had to be there at the right moment. I didn't have anything in mind when making these photos, but after the fact - if something is pleasing - we can usually discover some kind of harmonic principle at work. It's a bit of circular reasoning: if we feel that the brain prefers certain harmonies, then if we like the image there must be some harmony afoot.

Here's a stab at it: a Fibonnaci growth function, from right to left. It covers some of the main elements (horizontally) but there are probably too many others to reckon. If this game were simple, we would have lost interest a long time ago.

I like the glow effect I'd get with this film sometimes. But it was a glow with flare and not one with such a defining edge as in your case. So I dunno. How does the glow look with perhaps less contrast or clarity, I wonder.

The cup and saucers series I can imagine being a very neat relaxed and peaceful still life to contemplate and photograph, but you also get little glimpses/reminders, that this thing was formed by exciting and controlled motion, perhaps with mud and mess on a potter's wheel. Sort of like, but more timeless, than a smooth line on an antique car is made with violent machines, hammers, and sparks.

Yet another case where Mister Perez's lens testing has proven invaluable. This time it's a 35-105mm Nikkor Zoom Macro which I purchased new in 1984 and which is available used today for a comparatively modest sum.

The lens sat mainly idle until I read his Out of Focus Rendition Studies (https://photosketchpad.blogspot.com/2019/04/nikon-nikkor-35mm-f35-105mm-f45-zoom.html) and his Summary of Thoughts (https://photosketchpad.blogspot.com/2019/12/out-of-focus-rendition-summary-of.html) on the topic. Here it was used at 105mm, where as he says "... this Ai zoom shows very neutral out of focus rendition."

Oh I see it now. It suddenly flipped, like from concave to convex (or the other way), like an optical illusion.

In any event, it's got a lovely old-fashioned feeling.

And isn't it amazing to work at this closeness and scale ? And the material itself, what it does with light ?

Thanks. I put a sacrificial cast iron pan on the bottom of the oven. I put fire bricks in it. There's also a thick baking stone that the bread bakes on. I preheat for an hour. Score the bread. Put 1/2 cup of boiling water in the pan, using a long-handled ladel. Quickly slide bread onto stone. Shut door. Fill ladel with one cup boiling water, open door, pour, shut....

Ken, I believe that Time in New England has been reversed! That is my bad attempt to make a joke, but it is really a compliment, your image reminds me of Paul Strand's work, and that is good company to be in. (In fact, given your amazing control of tonality, I think I prefer yours with those glowing clock hands.)
