Randy that is awesome! I particularly like the white patch on the wing that adds contrast the overall subject.

Here is a link to the drone video (https://youtu.be/L6g-UZFpFOQ) - watch it in 4K if you can:)

Pali

Pali, watched it in 4K big screen. Was that spinning top, lens flare, or an alien?

The God View is interesting, especially as there are no more people...:)

This is cool Pali! You know, I predict a new genre of photo subjects coming. It’s easy to get straight down shots from a drone. What about working at making such a shot less ‘busy’ and developing compositional rules just for this type of photo? Take them out of the realm of pure documentation and into .... (gasp) art.

Thank you Peter and Steve! I am such a rookie with the drone and my heart was racing when I sent it way up in the air for this capture. I definitely will try to be more creative with it once I get the hang of it and don't feel like any wrong move on my part will send it crashing into the water or trees :)

Looks like you are having fun Pali! A friend of mine has an older drone and we went out flying a few times. We was wary of me flying it because I'd zip around pretty fast and furiously. Of course it wasn't mine so...:). But a life of video gaming has taught me great eye/hand coordination so I was able to fly it pretty well!

A few more Widelux shots from this weekend...hope you guys don't mind! Shot on Kodak XX dev'd in HC-110 dil. H:

Nice start with the drone photo! My last experience with an RC airplane was when a gust of wind took it out of range and it promptly crashed into the ocean. I think drones have improved enough that I could use one comfortably now. I'm saving towards a midrange dji. I can forsee it being like 8x10 with low cost barrier to entry and much expensive options and accessories... Video editing software, extra batteries and parts, nicer display for controlling it, etc..

Defocused to create only impression:

That's a great image! And I'm glad to see that you posted two different images, here, and in the Hiking forum. Both are great! Here is how to post an image that you have on Flickr ...

If you go to your Flickr page where the image is, click on the icon to "Share photo". The page that opens next gives you some options for sharing, and you want to click on BBCode. Within the BBCode is your image's web address, and it is between the and brackets.
For the image to appear in the forum you need to copy and paste the image brackets plus everything that follows up to and including the closing bracket into the body of your post. Don't leave any spaces between the brackets and the image address. That should do it.

Kern Switar 50/1.4 cine lens I found this weekend. I love this happy shot, taken through the window of a bar next to the restaurant we were waiting to get in. I peeked in between the blinds, and saw the shot developing, quickly snapped it. Manual focus too!

Since a minor medical condition currently precludes my trying out the newly acquired LF gear outdoors, I am bent on clearing my backlog, scanning some autumnal 35 mm negatives. The grain of HP5 in this format will be revolting for most of you here, but the tonality still shines through imho (it is one of my favourites on MF, and I have opted it to be my start-off film on LF, too).

Great photos Peter and Ken!

I lugged my LF gear and tripod on a hike today and didn't even use it. I suspect the extra exercise helped my brain or body somehow. Shot two rolls of 120 with the rolleiflex and a couple cell phone snaps for family. Here's some leaves with a layer of ice, then water, then reflection, then shot with my $100 cell phone. I do like the thoughtfulness of layering in my photos. B&W negatives are drying, but I think the color here is useful.. Sort of an Eliot Porter palette and inspiration. Maybe the shapes and tones will stand on their own differently in the B&W film; It might still be in the camera... I don't try to shoot a certain amount on each outing, but it always seems like I'm halfway through a roll when I finish some outing.. Thomaston town forest. I will return during a gentle snow with the LF gear.

I miss the Cape Neddick Maine area that we visited about a year ago. The coastal scenery with the light houses and the colorful architecture makes for an awesome photo trip as well. And though crabs are great, you gotta get the lobster while you are in Maine : )

Here are few more casual captures as I walked around London. The city is packed with people this time of the year so finding compositions without them was almost impossible. Tried to make the photos work with the crowds as best as I could.

On the saguaro questions, yes it's in the monument in Tucson. They do grow at certain elevations outside the park, I have a few in my neighborhood, but the monument is an easy way to get to concentrations of them there. And only a few miles from my house. The ribs are the woody part that give them their support. When the cactus dies for any reason, after a few years, saguaro ribs are all that is left. The local indians use them to make long poles to pull down the saguaro fruit. No one else is supposed to take them.

I took a film camera too, Retina IIc with 50/2.8 on HP-5

When I was last in the area 30 years ago Saguaro assassination by gun was very popular. Saguaro are particularly anthropomorphic in the dark of night.

Found this wilderness area in Mississippi I had not heard of before. The trail is actually about 40 miles and open for backcountry hiking/camping. Might be a good trail to set my sites on for a longer trip, sussing out my gear and such as I move forward with longer treks. But right now the creek is flooding the entire area due to the rains we've been having and I could only get maybe a quarter mile into the wilderness from one access point (not to mention other access points were closed with the gov't shutdown). The area photographed above is supposed to be the trail, about 1/4 mile from the creek proper.

Where does the 8x20 go again?:) (Although in that environment, I suppose you could use it as a field-expedient pirogue...) At any rate, nice shots, especially the first--if I had to guess, I'm thinking composition for this aspect ratio really benefits from a foreground "hinge."

Ha!
Yes I'm liking the first one more I think. The Widelux is a nice, small hiking camera, and I like the wide view. This kind of composition completely hides the swing-lens distortion. For distance hiking I honestly don't know what cameras would be best and fit in the allotted space in a backpack - perhaps the Widelux and a tiny 4x5 w/ one or two lenses, and maybe a 6x12 back.

I could definitely see taking the Widelux up into the high country if you're working the Last of the Mohicans side of the street. FWIW, I'm continually surprised about how compactly my Horseman kit rides compared to my P67--although I recently did go off the rez a bit and went ahead and added a 270/5.5 Tele-Arton. (Just one shot with it so far over in the "Trees" thread, but I'm really digging both the perspective and bright GG it allows.:))

Nice hawk Peter! Edit: and owls!

I just remembered some photos I shot at a Renaissance Fair over the summer, including this image of two scarlet macaws. When I was younger, I really wanted my mom to get a pair, but despite raising baby birds she is leery of the larger birds that have some serious strength in their beaks. There was a scarlet at the pet shop she sold cockatiels to that was available for months, that was kinda mean to everyone but for some reason liked me and let me pet it. My mom was afraid it was going to take off a finger.

Updated an image I made in 2010 of the eclipse, where I made a curved composite of the moon as it entered the shadow. The background was plain black and kinda boring so I tried compositing a wide view of the Milky Way I shot a couple years ago. A bit cheesy perhaps but hey why not.

Randy, it got down to 23 degrees here, which for us is real cold. My wife and I went out to a local lake/hiking area and I brought our 20 degree sleeping bags that unzip to sit almost flat to use as giant blankets, along with lots of other blankets. We don't really have good cold-weather gear (nor do we generally need it) and my hands/feet were numb by the time I packed it in. But it was fun to watch and it was very clear.

Gotta mix up some fresh C-41 chems and develop the 4-hour exposures I made on 4x5 Portra. Not sure if I got what I hoped for / envisioned but if I do I'm sure I'll post it ;).

Those sleeping bag ratings are always optimistic marketing, even for warm blooded me. 20f rating means 20f when the only hole in the sleeping bag is a tiny breathing hole AND you've got something else warm under you and over you, and you're wearing long clothes in the sleeping bag. The idea of layers in the cold does not go away because it's night!

Corran
21-Jan-2019, 14:59
Very true. I shopped long and hard to find decent bags that weren't complete scams in the ratings and found some that have performed well in normal use at around 30 degrees - but indeed, by normal use I mean in the bag and zipped up tight and wearing many layers.

Last night I had 4 layers on. I need to buy some heavier-duty base layers but they simply don't sell them much down here! I know very little about typical cold-weather clothing/preparedness.

I used to heat stones in the fire and wrap them in newspaper for the bottom of the bag.

Some say stones may explode, so I pick dried out stones. The paper is sometimes charred by morning. Cotton bags won't melt. I have a huge one from Cabelas, it will go in the thing below, used to be in my Westfalia.

Now I am building an insulated cargo trailer with fresh air furnace, cook top and DC fridge.

It's my bug out bag...but I won't get anywhere far...

I have a friend my age, his bugout plan was his motorbike to ride out of Hell on the railroad tracks, until I pointed out that the bike will get out of Dodge, but he won't, as he will shot off it, and so on down the line. Last man riding...

Save the last one for yourself. :)

All from slides shot in the late 1970's...slides scanned on Epson V800 and processed in Luminar 3 and PS-CC. Funny how I could remember when/where/how the first two were taken, but the picture of the boat I have no idea beyond camera/film used (only because the slide wrapper was from that of a lab that processed the 5247 way back when).

My Robot Star 50 needs some attention. There are two lenses that cover 24x24cm that came with the Robot: 38mm f/2.8 Xenar and 75mm f/3.8 Tele-Xenar, both Schneiders with 13,000,000 numbers putting them in the late 80's or early 90's vintage. Can't fing any one who will work on these fine cameras. I have used the lenses on a Fuji X-E1187109

I would at least call Phototronic, in Kansas (https://phototronic.biz/). Mike, the owner/repairman did some pretty amazing work (that almost everybody else wouldn't even attempt) for me on a couple of occasions and is very nice and pleasant to deal with.

Spoke to Mike. Very helpful, although he has not worked on a Robot. Also asked him about putting a new shutter in a Fuji X-Pro1. He is willing to try if he can get the part. Suggested I go with the bid of $270 I already had. As to the Robot Star 50, I have found a video that shows how to get into the innards of a Robot Star 2 that is very similar, so I will give it a try when I have the time. Too many projects, not enough retirement time - off to an RV show on Thursday! Today I plan on putting a lot of Linhof stuff on Ebay to help finance the Tomcat off-road vehicle project.

Thanks John, I do not at the moment have a Robot Star 50. Most of the time many of the old cameras get stuck in the slow gear and sometimes the high speed gear, because of old stiff oil and dirt, but of course it could also be other issues. You could maybe try to clean the slow gear with a little lighter fluid (Zippo, Extra. etc. etc) and then lube the axle end ONLY! with tiny drops of very thin sewing machine oil. I know it's a different camera but I have made 2 other videos about the small Robot Voll Automat Star II, but sad to say, it was really worn out... You can see here: https://youtu.be/oR4SHXgSpmw and Here: https://youtu.be/ZphGzE60TSs Cheers Kenneth

Just a snap with my cell phone. Yesterday, I took my Rolleiflex and Nikon on a brisk morning walk to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which is a 2 mile round trip. It's going to be above freezing for the next few days, so I wanted to photograph the mini icebergs that build up inside the breakwater. Tide was high and it's better to hike on the floating ice when it's low tide since it's not floating, but the breakwater is nicer to walk at high tide.. The NW wind made salt water freeze along the right hand side... It mostly walked on the left. Frozen salt water is softer and not as slippery at frozen fresh water so I did not endanger myself making a photo.

Most of these were using VR, at 1/30 seconds or slower, handheld. I think this lens works well with my Nikon D800! I might just get out more often......

I still need to test my new to me 5x7 inch view as well.....

The magnolias do look nice, especially when they are in bloom. But, most people would not want them in their yards. It is a constant battle with the falling leaves! It lasts all year long, and they are quite stiff. The seed pods are another problem. They will dull a mower blade in no time...

I couldn't help but bring a small 35mm rangefinder along with me this trip but really the Widelux is so nice for travel. I gotta let go of the versatility of my "normal" 35mm RF and just go out with the Widelux around my neck and a pocketful of XX or whatever next time. But I sometimes feel limited with the 1/15 shutter speed being the slowest it can go. All of these were at that except the Fort, handheld. The first two were at f/2.8 even. I should buy more Kodak TMZ...

Nice, I especially like the first one! Check-out the 35mm and digital infrared thread (https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?146189-35mm-and-digital-infrared).

Yes, Audii-Dudii, I agree with Jim Jones.

I usually dislike IR imaging but these are impressive.

I really like that you shared the gear used to make them. Thank you!

They evoke Twilight Zone ideas!

@ Jim and Randy: Thanks for the kind words!

First off: Jim, thanks for the pointer to the IR thread ... definitely some nice work posted there!

Second, Randy: As it happens, I'm not usually a fan of IR photography as it's typically done, either. But after much experimentation, I've stumbled on a B&W post-processing recipe that works very well for the type of photography I do.

I think the equipment is helping, too, as there seems to be something almost magical that happens when the NX500's 28.3 MP, BSI sensor is used with film-era Contax 28/f2.8 and 35-70/f3.4 lenses. I've experienced absolutely zero issues with hot spots or corner softness or any of the artifacts that often occur when using many (most?) lenses with IR light and I am at a loss to explain why this is so.

To be honest, I chose this particular combo of gear because I already had it on hand, the NX500 was remarkably easy to modify -- working slowly, it took me only 45 minutes or so from start to finish -- and it isn't worth much money these days, so no loss if it didn't work. But clearly, the sum is proving to be greater than any of its parts, so I am not complaining!

FYI, this project started with palm trees and has only recently been expanded to include individual houses and various street scenes (the latter two of which I have been photographing -- usually at night -- for going on a decade now, although this is my first experience doing so without a tripod.) In case you're curious, here are three of my favorite palm tree photos so far, although I still have dozens yet to process:

https://i.imgur.com/2lxUDGZ.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ZWMfXnc.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/mv3cUWf.jpg

To the best of knowledge, my palm tree project is unique -- at least, I haven't been able to find anyone doing anything similar -- and between the two projects, I'm having a lot of fun and we -- my dog and myself -- are getting a lot of exercise, too, because each walk can last as long as two hours! :D

Third: As for nobody being home, go stand in front of someone's house with a camera pointed at it and see how long it takes before someone comes outside to find out what you're doing! This was especially an issue when I was trying the Contax 18/4 lens, because I was standing right on the sidewalk in front of their house, where my presence was quite obvious. Now, using the longer 28/f2.8 lens, I'm off to one side or the other and standing in the street or on the sidewalk across the street, so people aren't as aware of me and the confrontations have stopped ... for now, at any rate.

Cheaper than running a refrigerator, I suppose. Just don't forget them when the thaw comes! 8-)

I like the vertical one. The surreal element of a couple of film holders skating down a frozen stream is fun.

As always, thanks for the kind words!

While I photograph for my own personal enjoyment, first and foremost, it's always nice when my photos resonate with somebody else, too!

Here are a few more recent photos from my once- or twice-daily photo outings -- aka walks with my dog -- around my neighborhood:

Now did you do the IR mod yourself or did you send it to the 250 dollar guy?

Now did you do the IR mod yourself or did you send it to the 250 dollar guy?

I did it myself!

In fact, it was surprisingly easy -- I have some, but not a lot of experience in these matters -- and took me about an hour from start to finish. Here's a photo of the sensor removed from the body and just about to undergo removal of the hot filter / dust shaker / cover glass, which is held in place by just two screws:

https://i.imgur.com/FqM70qu.jpg

Because I didn't replace the hot filter, et al with a piece of clear glass -- mostly because this was a spur-of-the-moment project and I didn't have one handy, but also because the adapted lenses I would be using were all manual-focus designs, with no floating elements (so their performance wouldn't suffer much if the modified optical length was off a teeny bit) and I thought they might perform slightly better without it -- and the camera is now capturing only IR light, which focuses at a different point than visible light, I did have to adjust the position of the sensor slightly so I could focus the lens(es) at infinity.

But that was also very easy to do, as the three adjustment points can be accessed by removing only the rear panel -- so there's no need to remove the main circuit board or the sensor again -- and they're spring loaded, so it was simply a matter of changing the tension on the springs with a hex wrench instead of changing shims.

IIRC, it took me only three rounds of adjustment to get the IR focus point dialed-in closely enough and required maybe 20 minutes of time from start to finish.

To my surprise, I have experienced no hot-spot issues with any of the five Contax / Yashica lenses I've used with the converted camera so far. Alas, the two widest lenses -- the 18/f4 and 25/f2.8 -- are unable to bend the IR light passing through them enough to crisply focus both the center and the corners at the same time, which results in very soft corners when one focuses on the center of the composition. For some photos, this isn't an issue, but for the type of photos I usually take, it is, so I won't be using those lenses on this camera again.

All in all, though, I'm very pleased with how this project has turned out, not least of which because the conversion cost me nothing but some time on a lazy weekend morning. Plus, it can be easily reversed if I ever wish to return the camera to its OEM configuration! :D

And even though the NX500's sensor technology dates from early 2015, it was among those at the bleeding edge of technology back then and even today, its 28.2 MP, backside illuminated design compares very favorably with the best APS-C sensors available.

Same here. I do almost all of my home maintenance and repairs, plus my car maintenance and repairs -- including even replacing the engine in my Cayman that I blew up at the track by myself, in my garage, using just a floor jack! -- and I've even successfully represented myself in a court on various driving infractions.

If you want it done right, we often must DIY.

I won't ride any motorcycle until I check it over with a torque wrench. Brand new or ancient.

A couple 35mm photos made last week, with my Widelux F7 and Kodak XX:

Twelve Oaks Trail

The house in the background is believed to be an old African-American church. This place is tucked away in the affluent town of Ocean Springs, MS and is just a couple hundred feet away from US 90, the main thoroughfare to Biloxi. But it felt like I was miles away from such hustle and bustle with the sprawling Live Oaks (estimated to be 400 years old) and beautiful azalea bushes. This place deserves a revisit next trip for sure.

Biloxi Beach Boardwalk Fog

Some of the densest fog I've ever seen was on display for most of my trip to the coastal region of MS. I walked a couple miles on the beach, on a new boardwalk recently built. Palm trees are here and there, but fairly uncommon on the beach - because of hurricanes, I guess. But these two clusters made a nice composition in the dense fog. My mantra with the Widelux lately has been to get closer - I'm only a foot or so from the front palms.

Ha, nail these two shots with your 8x20, then you can give it a Viking funeral.:) (FWIW, I bet you could make a career exploring that first scene and its analogs set across the Deep South...AME's seem to pop up in pretty picturesque locales.)

Thanks you guys!

Ha, nail these two shots with your 8x20,

That'll be a challenge with "only" a 300mm lens (I bid on a ~200mm lens this past week that should cover 8x20, but lost the auction at the last second when it jumped to 4x the price). Perhaps my 4x10 holder and 90mm XL...

Of course the swing-lens camera imparts it's own "look" emphasizing more distant objects like the tree in the center since it's a longer focal length than a 120 degree wide angle...

I think he needs a Cirkut camera ;)

And that would be the analogous LF camera! :) I wonder what your price would be. I can guarantee it will be too much for me at the moment sadly, unless you want to trade for a print lol ;).
