A hike to Green Mountain Lookout located in Glacier Peek Wilderness, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The last hour of the hike was up a steep snow field. It only took about 5 minutes to get down via glissading. That was fun.

Chris; the original Miatas are officially collectible cars now. It'd probably bring bidding competition at any auction of collector/antique auto auction if you decide to part with it.

This is at Schoodic Point, part of Acadia NP that is not on the island. I had never been to Schoodic and wanted to check it out as I had work to do in the area. It was drizzly and cold there yesterday (about 50f which is cool for June). My car was one of only three at the parking lot that can probably handle 100 cars. It's a real tourist destination as people love to photograph the rocks there and waves breaking on the rocks, etc... Honestly, I was more impressed with the woods than the rocks. The loop road around the peninsula shows off a very diverse variety of woods. I could spend days photographing just the woods and may go back later in the season for that. I may go back for the rocks in the fog sometime. The woods were thick old forest at the north part of the loop with a canopy so thick it was so dark on the ground nothing else could grow. I'm sure I'd need a tripod for anything in there. Then there were more normal Maine woods with beautiful shapes curving around chiseled rocks with lichen like God the sculptor left a project halfway done and let nature take over. Then closer to the shore, there were stunted trees, juniper and blueberry, broken trees with white sun and salt bleached branches like Monhegan, tiny wild flowers like in an Eliot Porter book, etc.. If you're thinking of going there, consider more than the rocks and plan lots of time if you appreciate the woods too. Can't wait to develop my film and visit again.

A few years ago I was at an indoor calf roping event. I figured I needed at least 1/500th shutter for this action. And it took f2.8 at ISO 6400+ to get it. Geesh, I thought, how are photographers covering this event suppose to get any decent dynamic range, tonal scale and DOF in their photos with such poor lighting.

Yeah by the end of the evening I was pushing it to 12,800 ISO and still wasn't shooting faster than 1/400 or even slower. Also the arena lights were some old lights with flicker, causing 2 out of 3 images to be wildly underexposed or to have side-to-side exposure/color variance on the frame. I've heard of such a thing but never seen it. Oh well. This was a smallish event and from what I could see there was no "official" photography.

I rarely do any photography with the cell phone but I have noticed that Scott posts amazing stuff from his Galaxy phone so I tried it and am very happy with the results. It does have a Macro mode and you are absolutely correct that I have been shooting many close-ups recently. Here is one more from the vacation.

Yes, it's not bad. I haven't found the print yet, but I did find a .tiff of a workprint on my hard drive. Done in 1988 with a Toyo 810G and 480mm Apo-Ronar on FP4 developed in HC-110. The print was on Gallerie Gr 2 I think. When I think of all the rigmarole involved in getting this image, compared with the ease of modern digital imaging, I have to wonder why we bother. But at 74 I still do, and I guess that answers that. I still think yours is a lovely image, Pali, no matter what you used to get it. And that's the main thing.

I couldn't agree more. I use my phone a lot because it's always on me. If I see some nice light or something that grabs my attention, I don't hesitate to take the photo. In the past I would tell myself it's definitely a nice photo and maybe I'll come back with a 'real' camera. Now I go for it and see how it "develops" later. ;-)

Barry, that's amazing you know all that info about a photograph you took 20 years ago. Good notes? I suck at that! ;-)

Thanks, Chassis! The setup was a Nikon D600 with a 24mm AF-D Nikkor. A Camranger + tablet was used to control the camera. I started with an ambient bracket. After that, I use a Cheetah Light CL-600x with a remote head to light up various areas/rooms that weren't bright enough. The CL-600x was in a shoulder bag. It was connected to a hand-holdable extension head with a 7" Bowens reflector covered with a 1/2 CTO gel. When I got too far from the camera for the Camranger to work, I used Pocket Wizards to fire everything off with.

I like the image because it beautifully demonstrates real d e p t h !
The diagonal seems to help with that effect.

Personally, I feel the right side shadow area is a touch on the dark side.
Were you to print for an exhibit, consider dodging slightly to bring out the detail.

It's been raining a lot in the late afternoon. At Lake Lanier, right past Buford Dam, there's a fishing area that always fogs up late in the day after a rain. I took this image there.

Southeast of the Grand Canyon is a couple of lesser-known national monuments, including Sunset Crater Volcano. I swung by there late after going to the Grand Canyon and looked around. The volcano erupted about 1000 years ago and deposited a lot of volcanic rock and such around the mountain. There's some very interesting areas around the lava flow trail - an easy 1 mile trail. There are large swaths of beautiful red rocks, hence the name "Sunset Crater."

We've had late-afternoon storms almost every day here lately. The other day it was just raining cats and dogs in a very localized storm that made beautiful, vibrant rainbows show up everywhere. Rainbows are not particularly common to see so vividly in my experience, or for very long, in GA. My wife and I drove around a bit and found a good vantage point at the university she works at and I shot this:

I like the vanishing point road.

Well, I initially planed to go to the Painted Hills in Eastern Oregon that's in the path. You can't camp there rather you'd have to find a place in driving distance. But I've been hearing horror stories about half the country showing up there. I figured I try for a landscape with the eclipse as part of it. But it's like 10:00AM and the Sun's altitude is getting pretty high. So I dunno. I may go there and check it out first. Another option is finding a camp site on the East side of the mountains where you could go to find a sweeping view of the plains on the other side or something.

I want to do a landscape as well, though the sun will be much higher over here. Eclipse is around 1:30pm. There's a mountain just down the road from me right at the edge of the full eclipse that is a very arduous hike - so I'm thinking no one will be there. Haven't decided for sure yet though. Good luck with wherever you go :).

If I were to do 1+100 with an agitation profile, I'd just double the time to 22 minutes as a starting point. Is your 1-hour dev time you're using stand or semi-stand development?

I find Rodinal can give you over/under cooked results just on how little/much you agitate the film for a given time more so than other developers I've used. The contributions to the Massive Development Chart usually doesn't give you the agitation profile used. It's suppose to be the "standard" agitation for that developer according to the MDC. But it seems no two people agitate Rodinal the same. It would sure be nice if people reaffirmed the profile they used in the MDC just so everyone is on the same page.

I scanned another version from the same roll at 5000 DPI to see how much resolution is there on the XPan image on Prova 100F. No surprise, there is amazing detail on the slide and this point and shoot camera can make quite big enlargements.

Thanks for your thoughts, Tuco. I used the same agitation as I have used before for semi-stand Rodinal - six inversions at the start and six at the thirty minute mark. I'll admit I was surprised to see one hour recommended for Pan F, as that is the time and dilution recommended for the 400ISO films I often develop this way, but assumed it might be the same because the films are being developed to completion. My usual Pan F regime is either 8 minutes in 1+50 Rodinal (agitate ten seconds every minute) or 5.5 minutes in HC-110 1+47 with the same agitation. Then I fancied seeing if I could do it semi-stand and things went wrong! I went back to that beach last night for the sunset, and I'll try out 30 minutes on that film this morning. If and when that one screws up I suppose I can blame it on the camera as I was shooting the setting sun with +2 exposure compensation to preserve some detail in the rocks. Hmm, now I think about it, I ought to have written 'blame myself, as the camera isn't responsible for my mistakes!

Today I found in a local antique store a beautiful, 100+ year old mantle clock. I've wanted an antique clock for years, but I've never found the right one at the right price until now. It is an Ansonia clock made out of cast iron (about 25 pounds!!). The best part is it works. I calibrated the pendulum and it seems to be running pretty close to correct. The hour and half our chime works and is beautiful. I put it in the center of our great room so you can read the clock from the kitchen and watch the mechanism from the back while sitting on my couch.

I took this picture looking into the mechanism with my cell phone. I thought it would be a fun exercise also working with the cell cam. I will definitely be doing a bunch of close-ups of this piece on film though'!!

Great idea! I am going to take it to a local antique clock and watch repair shop to see how much a clean and lube costs. Shouldn't be hard to replace the swinging cover with plexi.
