Michael. Across the drive is excellent.
Chassis I dig the egg shot. I pulled it into snapseed. You have a ton of information there. You can take it to different looks if you want. Digitally that is. Personally it's nice to see some nice whites (like the eggs). There are some beautiful shiny tones and reflections waiting to be shown. The shadows on the eggs add to dimension. As does their reflection on the bowl.

Sorry, perhaps that was too cheeky. Regardless, Garrett, it's good that you aren't the decider of what is and isn't art. Furthermore, as noted, this isn't an specifically an art forum. More importantly, if you have something relevant to say about the actual success or not of the photos, feel free to tell me, I am open to criticism. If you have a problem with protests or just photos of protests for other, personal reasons, that is your choice, but is irrelevant.

As it happens, I am opening a small show of images in an "art" setting next week, all documentary images I have shot in the past few years, much of it political. Specifically starting the night of the inauguration.

Back from a visit to Baltimore, a couple of days with my Sony Alpha 7 and old Leica lenses. I've discovered that with the old manual lenses and the camera on Aperture Priority, it handles a lot like my LeicaM6, and not like an electronic "make all the decisions for me" digital (yes, I am being very judgmental!). Anyway, visited the National Aquarium, and their exhibit on the spread of jellyfish worldwide was visually spectacular. Here are a few images which I could never have made with my 4x5! (No processing other than some cropping and brightness adjustment; colors are what I & the camera saw):

Ok y'all. I have to say the galaxy S7 is a damn good camera. I realize this is subjective but I think it's the right amount of saturation without being stupid....juat enough "wow" a dash if you set it right. I wish it would default to the last mode. To get a raw File you have switch modes everytime. There is no setting to go back to the same mode.

This is the stock app for the camera and its really damn good in full auto. It's in my pocket and I get to explore photographs all the time. I'm able to get the final vision with these files.
I love and prefer my 5d with the 50mm Tak, but it's not with me like my phone is.
So I guess I'm saying I give a big thumbs up for the S7. It allows me to be creative instantaneously. My friends just know I'm into a photo moment and don't bother me.

Good deal. I'm going to make sure my next phone has a better camera. My phone camera's "auto mode" is really bad. In daylight with the sun out, I get blurry pictures from what looks like motion blur way too much and I'm pretty sure I'm holding the camera steady enough.

Thanks, Tuco. A friend is taking an online product photography class, and he wanted me to do this week's assignment too. The assignment was to shoot a perfume bottle, using stuff between the camera and the subject to add interest. I didn't want to spend money on perfume, and so I borrowed a bottle from a friendly neighbor :) Obviously, it should've been full. Hi Martin,

Here is the setup:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/iettyb30jct4zk1/Coco_setup.jpg?raw=1

So the side strip lights, the ones with their edges up against the diffuser, are to put gradients on the shiny bits. The back light lights up the liquid and the foreground. I also used a small spot on the cap. Getting that far didn't take long, perhaps 20 minutes? Placing the beaded necklace up against the lens hood, moving it a bit this way and that, and lighting it with a speedlight took awhile to get what I wanted, perhaps 45 minutes to and hour. Since the speedlight didn't have a modeling light, I had to take a picture to see what I'd get. I took quite a few.

Very nice image Peter, and thanks for the setup image.
I've got some old original 4x5 chromes for magazine adverts from some fashion brands, I think Chanel included. I suppose this is commercial work?

I gave up on shooting 35mm slides due to cost but then I found a huge lot of well-kept Velvia and other E-6 films this month. Tested some Velvia (original) this past week at one of my old favorite hiking spots in south GA when I was visiting.

I've played around with the idea of 4"x10" off and on for years, but at this point, I wanted something I could more easily wander around with. I usually struggle up a mountain or two every year and I thought the xpan would be good for that too. There are always trade offs though, aren't there? Here's another one, from my first roll. I find cemeteries to be good places to practice. They're nice and quiet and often have lots of straightforward subjects that don't move. :-)

I like abstraction and sparkling water too. If you shoot sparkling water with LF, that's an interesting challenge too. Instead of starburst like above you can get soft bokeh options varies by lens tilt. Tmax is a good option for sparkly scenes like this.

Thanks! Sometimes you have to work with what the light gives you (in this case fading fast!), which meant slower shutter speed. I was really pleased with how it turned out in the end. One of those moments when you see what you want in your head and hope it comes out like that in the camera!

Dang, that's a lot of gear. Sometimes I take a film and digital camera along. And when I do it seems to interfere with the "mental BW mode" I get in when I shoot BW film. Does that happen to you?

Austin's picture inspired me to think about how this digital scene near Palouse, WA, would look converted to monochrome.

I know what you mean.. I have a widemouth tool bag that carries the speed graphic, 2 lenses, filmholders, and rolleiflex. something like an instax just goes in a coat pocket. Tripod accounts for much of the bulk. If I didn't take the rolleiflex, I'd take a DSLR which is not lighter. What I really need is a sling or custom backpack for my tripod. Maybe a biathlon style sling with a belt added to put the tripod weight on my waist instead of shoulders.

The seeing, for me, is working up a sweat lugging stuff, then stopping in the woods for a few minutes to ponder, like Thoreau or Frost.

Here I know the subject well enough to deal with color or B&W without mentally changing gears. It's all in my neighborhood within a mile or two walk. I'm more apt to run across something requiring color and being unprepared for it. I could go back and often do, but light and weather is always different and being prepared is good.

New England is finally getting some winter. I didn't take LF out today... Burned through a roll of 120 film instead. Weather like this, since it's a short walk from home, I just bring the camera home when the roll is done rather than change rolls in a snowstorm. This snow does not hurt the camera so long as I brush it off while it's still frozen. Show good use of the lens hood to stop flying snow. Snow did build up inside the lens hood once or twice. Probably would exercise some additional care if it were a digital MF camera.

Molas Lake, South of Silverton, Colorado
D300, 24-70mm lens

I took this about 2 years ago and never printed it til today.

Taken after sunset, but there was still a glow to the sky and enough light to capture the scene. Despite some refinement in PS, I feel the image falls a bit flat.

Have tried many variations, but this level of brightness and contrast seems the best overall.

Comments welcome.

It's a very nice image. You might try adding a bit of high radius/low amount sharpening to boost mid-tone contrast. So, duplicate layer. Go to filter> unsharp mask. Set the radius at 70. Adjust the amount to taste. You can add a layer mask to paint out/in the effect, and of course you can lower the opacity of the layer to moderate the effect.

DennisD
14-Feb-2017, 21:35
Thanks, Peter, for your suggestion.

Actually there is a fair amount of hi pass filtering on the mountains (one layer @80px and a second layer @ 200px). That much is necessary to improve clarity, i.e. to really cut thru haze and bring out features.

There is also 80px on the mid ground (behind the lake).

Thanks to your comment, I went back to the image and found that the hi pass on the mid-ground area was down at 30% opacity. Increasing that to 100 produced significant improvement - especially in the grasses / mid tones.

I would post a newer version, but the difference will hardly be readable in a small jpg. However, onscreen, in high quality, it's a definite improvement. I'll experiment some more with the mid tone contrast.

Thanks. I've photographed this boat many times over the years. Believe it or not, it's owned by Andrew Romanoff, the grand nephew of Nicolas II, the last Tsar of Russia. Hi Gary, looks like there are 3 Gary Tarberts on Flickr. All of them have very nice work, and seem to be the same person. The link you provided didn't work, but I did a search and found you.

Keep practicing with the links and it will come together.Yes Chassis , there are 3 i thought only 2 i had a computer failure and lost my password , i tried to just retrieve it but the process seemed really hard could be just be me , So i figured there is not much on it anyway so i just set up a new account ,i have not used flikr very much , i should see if i can delete the other 2 , But then would have to remember the password DOH!

I'm interested in your still life & close up images, Ken. There's a considered sense of contemplation and introspection, accentuated by the soft greys of the tonal palette which is consistently drawn; different tones would have a markedly different effect on the viewer. I spend hours looking at Steichen's photographs, and other similar photographers - Walter Peterhans' photograph of a champagne glass has long fascinated me, for example. Please keep your photographs coming.

For what it's worth, I found it distracting also.I agree i would not print it without removing , But for photo sharing on flikr etc i don't usually fuss as much as for printing .https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2811/32990801190_f6f62186a3_o.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/SghtP5)moon dune (https://flic.kr/p/SghtP5) by Gary Tarbert (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130456595@N06/), on Flickr But fixed anyway

Nice flowers Pali! And Austin, I love everything you're shooting with the XPan. Gary, I like the dune shot. Moon seems oddly large, maybe it's just the perspective and my unfamiliarity with dunes?

Here's a somewhat abstract image of a dam I shot on a little evening walk yesterday. Nikon SP 2005, 50mm f/1.4 Millennium, Portra 160VC:

That is great Bryan. Nice Portra palette and interesting composition.

Thank you Bryan and a really nice image yourself. I completely agree with Chassis, excellent demonstration of the Portra palette that works so well in this image. To keep on the Portra theme, here are two more scans from the same roll.

Thanks to you both. Pali, definitely like the tone and color on your latest Portra images compared to the earlier 5D3 image.

Portra does have a very natural palette ,and suits this subject very well Pali , Like your abstract as well Corran , in answer to your question The only thing that may have made the moon look a little bigger is it is not a wide angle shot and it has been cropped a bit , Other than that don't know , Thanks for your comment

Thanks Jon.

Thanks Bryan. That dam photo is great!

Here's another one from the XPan. I took this while driving. Don't do as I do kids! :-)
