It is, but it can be developed in regular B&W developers with no problems.

I've been in Japan for a couple of weeks. Took everything from Minox (8 x11mm) to 4 x 5. Here's a Minox shot taken at my favorite Tonkatsu (pork cutlet) shop. I've been eating there for maybe 30 years and couldn't even think of going to Tokyo without stopping in to recharge my cholesterol. I'm having fun with the Minox - it's so small that people don't seem to react to it like they would to a bigger camera - they seem very natural. Both are on Delta 400

149945

And here's one of my wife at the chopstick store - they don't sell anything else. Must have 5000 sets or more in stock.

149946

And a couple shot with a 1937 Zeiss Super Ikonta 6 x 4.5 that my father bought new in 1937

This is at Choumeiji temple in Tokyo, Ilford XP2. It's of one of the Nioh (仁王 - literally "two kings") commonly found at the main gate of a temple as protectors of Buddha.

And this is at Shirakawa (A UNESCO World Heritage site) on a drizzly day

Hi Garrett

Thanks - it was a great trip with a few "minor inconveniences".

Like having two auto accidents with the rental car. One was on me when I just barely got too far to the left and ticked the side mirror of another car - wound up spending two hours at the police station. Although the cops were pretty amiable, the paperwork was ferocious. The second when one of our Japanese friends was driving down a narrow ramp to a traditional sea salt producer and veered off the ramp and took the Prius "off-road" down an embankment and across a concrete curb, tried to back up and slammed into an evaporation tank and cracked the whole rear bumper. He returned the rental car and had to pay a $200 penalty (not covered by insurance) to compensate the car rental company for the loss of use of the vehicle for two days. Something to bear in mind should you ever rent a car in Japan. Which by the way is an excellent way to tour the rural parts of the country - excellent roads, no traffic, no buildings in sight for thirty minutes at a time. pets sleeping in the middle of the road, etc. Once you're out of the major cities it's a different world.

And like being sick as the proverbial pooch the whole trip - Yukie had to be hospitalized as soon as we landed in Tucson with a horrendous case of Pneumonia (she's home now and recovering nicely) and I had a foul cold followed by an ear infection that's taken almost three weeks to clear up. And it rained almost every day. Did I mention that it was a great trip? Really. It was.

I'll post a write-up in the travel section soon.

On the other hand we saw a part of Japan neither of us had been to before - a small peninsula that sticks out into the Sea of Japan, and it was worth the "inconveniences". Saw a lot of friends and family as well. And got some good photos. Cherry blossoms this year were fantastic. My wife's only disappointment was that we only spent one night at Wakura Onsen instead of two or three.

Lots of potential here! I'd be tempted to visit and crop way tighter with soft focus and get the reeds in the foreground and the wind turbines in the background with a blue sky and orange/red filter. Or small format at sunset with warm light on the windmill in the background and warm light lighting one side of the reeds.

here's a recent one with my D600/Sigma hsm 50. The first part of spring here is the unthawing of what winter has done, along with wind and rain that rips trees out of the ground and apart. Later in spring is blooming flowers and petals the things like that.

Like having two auto accidents with the rental car.

On my last trip to the US, we had three flat tires on our rental in two weeks, usually somewhere out in the boonies (like at a 21 mile one-way route through Organ Pipe NM in the Arizona desert, just before dawn. We had only met two other visitors all day). Wasn't very expensive, though.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip!

Thanks Garrett. You are spot-on about it getting hot for desert day time shooting. Yesterday a fellow photographer and I spent time photographing several elderly and dilapidated railroad water towers/tanks near a stretch of the old Highway 80 between Gila Bend and Tacna. If there had not been a nice breeze during the afternoon, it would have been very uncomfortable. Hopefully, the negs from this trip will be decent after I have a chance to develop them next week.

Later this month or early June I will be packing most of my cameras up and preparing for a big move. I might be shooting more digital in the future out of necessity - possibly will have no way to develop film for a while.

In preparation I bought some adapters and filters more suited to what I need on my D800E, especially with the less forgiving nature of digital. This includes a filter adapter for my 14-24mm Nikkor and a huge 150mm 2-stop hard GND filter, both made by Haida. Ari hooked me up as he is a dealer. Haven't had a lot of free time but last weekend made it out to the woods and shot some at a tributary to the Withlacoochee. The weather wasn't terrible conducive, but here are two shots with the 14-24mm and 2-stop GND. I was trying to emulate the look of Portra 160VC:

Went to my daughter's graduation (BS in Env Sci/Poly Sci) and was in the Arizona high country, Flagstaff.

Then I returned to the 100 degrees AZ low country, and this strange evening sky. I hear the Tucson mountains are on fire again.

Bryan, hope you are happy with your new digs.
Garrett. that first shot is very nice!

I have been lax in my photography of late. I blame work and Corran for selling me those tape decks. It lead me down a road I am still traveling.
Anyway I have picked up the camera again, even if it is digital. This is the same shot from a swamp in Fairfield, GA close to the Chattahoochee River. It was taken in November when my son was visiting. It was a aimless road trip, the best kind.

This is the same shot but one cropped for effect. Not sure which one I like the best.

Went to the beach with my DSLR and Rolleiflex and ran out of film. 2 rolls for a 2 hour walk is not sufficient and I fail to remember that. But I had my DSLR as well, and got this on my way back.

Miguel, next time you make a digital composite like this, I think that you can do a better job. The first step would be to make sure that all parts of the image are in the same scale, and not one part b&w and another in color. And use more people in the foreground, and not just one cloned multiple times...

I visited Monhegan island yesterday to drop off some prints (which includes one LF photo) for the upcoming Monhegan Photo Fest ( https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/monhegan-island-photo-festival-inaugural#/ ) which is fully funded.

I took my IR converted DSLR bought from a forum member here. In sunny weather it makes skies look nice. In any weather, it makes the ocean look dark, which is good sometimes. Weather ended up not being nice. Once you get past the coastal islands, you're in the exposed ocean and you get swells. If a boat goes perpendicular to the swells, you get spray but a smooth ride. If you go sideways to the swells the boat rolls enthusiastically.

In my youth, I watched many news reels of WWII rough landing craft rides, saw blurred Capa photos, etc.. I noticed the weather was just right for that so I shot a bunch of photos appreciating the motion. Many people would get seasick but I enjoy this sort of thing.

That looks kind of scary, perhaps due to the IR capture. I don't like waves when I'm on a boat, they do make me a bit queasy sometimes.

My uncle used to have a big ~25ft boat but he really didn't know how much about boating I don't think. He took me and my dad out once to the mouth of Pensacola Bay which gets really choppy and was running the boat full-out into big swells. Not particularly fun!!

Are the fisheyes cropped digitally? Is there a good way to achieve a similar effect in the darkroom?

Corran
4-Jun-2016, 21:25
Thanks Jon! Here's one more because I'm just loving the results. This is a cannon at the Chalmette Battelfield:

http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/neworleans6 (13)ss.jpg

BetterSense - no cropping, technically. The negative actually has a sphere on it. In the darkroom it would print as a circle in blackness. Here, I have presented them as a sphere surrounded by the default background color of the forum so as to blend it into the background - this is done by selecting the sphere in Photoshop and feathering it slightly, and then filling in the negative area with that color. If you use a non-default color for the forum it won't work, and the "quote" function has a slight blue tint in that box as you can see in the post above which throws it off, so it's not perfect. When I post them on my blog, I'll leave them black so as to blend with my theme.

Bryan, You are on a roll! They just keep getting better! Now, I want this lens.......

Corran
5-Jun-2016, 10:14
You are too kind. I've been kind of hunting for this lens for years. I first bought a normal fisheye about 5 years ago - I was aware of this lens but figured a normal full-frame fisheye was more appropriate. In the meantime the prices have skyrocketed on this fairly uncommon lens and so I figured I wouldn't be able to get one or would settle for a Sigma or other 3rd-party model. Surprisingly I found this gem on eBay mis-listed as simple a "Nikkor" 8mm lens and sniped it for almost 1/3 the normal going rate. I really didn't think I'd win it.

I'm through all my TMX and was scanning a roll of Tri-X and found the real gem of this trip. I thought about this shot before my trip and was able to get just what I wanted - looking up at the mural in the St. Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square, shot wide-open at 1/15. Thanks Jon and Pali! I am about out of decent fisheye shots. Here are two scenes on the streets of New Orleans, taken instead with a 5cm f/2 lens on T-Max 3200 shot at 800 and developed in T-Max developer:

I found some more of this film in my freezer. I really like it and am sad it is gone. Delta 3200 has not done well for me but I guess I'll have to give it another go.

It won't be as grainy but you could get similar tones by pushing tmax400 one stop to 1600 (slightly underexposed).

Years ago I found a little Nikon point and shoot, an L35AF, for like $5. It seemed to work fine but I just never really bothered. I happened to come across it a few days ago and threw it in with my water bottle and snacks for my canoe trip Thursday.

The little bugger is actually pretty dang good. Sadly, while disembarking from my canoe after a long day, I tripped on the sheer bank and the little thing tumbled out of my shoulder bag because I was careless and didn't properly pack it up. Into the sand and water it went. Seems to be toast, and worse, apparently these little guys are getting a cult following - a trip to eBay shows them selling for up to $100 now! Oops. At least it wasn't something more expensive.

Here's one image I shot from that day on the little L35, with T-Max developed in FX-39:

Thanks Marty & Renato.

Renato: I bought used a d800 that was converted by maxmax.com to ir-only by the previous owner. I had an older camera converted by lifepixel which was very nice too, but I wanted something newer to do video and higher dynamic range such as the d800 can handle. I use a 50/1.8 d-af lens which is good at medium apertures. (has a hot spot at small apertures)

JP,

Thanks for the info, as the D800 is coming more affordable as the newer models are showing on the market we can try a FF camera with real high pixels count for infrared conversion,

Cheers,

Renato

The day was overcast with strong wind blowing the flag all over. Lucky to get it at a quiet moment.

I did some quick adjustments in PS - see below.
It looks a bit improved, perhaps I should reduce the saturation (green) next go round.

You're a better man than I Pali. I've lived in AZ all my life (60 years) and been around for every high record temp during that time, including a 125 day in Bullhead City! I've never gotten used to it. All the best on your visit and I hope you get some great photo opportunities. I've been getting up at 4:00 AM lately. Really interesting set of images, beautifully done in style and composition. Each one is a gem.

IMHO yours are even higher key than Evans's images. You could go darker with more contrast without any issue.
Take a look at the "Sea of Steps" image on the Philadelphia Museum of Art site for comparison.

The lighting is particularly interesting because it undulates from one side of the tree to the other.
The effect outlines the tree nicely within the image frame. The toning is also pleasant.

Thanks to those of you who responded to my images.

Tom, I agree with your assessment, but chose to process them the way I did (and there was some subtle but important processing on all of them) to preserve somewhat the feel of each view. The second and fourth were more interior, so very evenly lit. I could have made them darker overall, but I liked the high key effect, which is faithful to the feeling I had when there. The steps in the first image were fairly brightly lit with filtered sunlight through some windows, and the middle portion of the third was lit brightly by some lights that can't be seen in the photo.

Thanks again for looking.

Bought a IR converted d800 on the forum here last year. I've been putting it to good use. Too hot and muggy to hike yesterday, so I sat on the porch, drank iced beverages, and made photos of the clouds, one of my favorite things to do with IR.

Photo of the Tappan Zee bridge in Tarrytown, NY taken at twilight.
The new TZ bridge, currently under construction, is well under way in front of the old bridge.

This is a three image stitch from D800E camera.
In the original image the pinkish sky was so strong, I desaturated before posting.
Here the overall image seems a bit dull, so I may try to improve.

Dennis,

Thanks! You'll have to learn something about the "Gauchos" here in the Brazil's South: everything he's wearing is part of the Gaucho's wardrobe. No beach towel at all, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaucho

I know this man there is six years or so, from when I moved to this region in the extreme south of the country.
He was elected to the community council last year, and even being a person who has barely write and read skills he is proving a great sense of reality and responsibility in this position. So, a folklore person, but not just that.
More about that

Glad you liked it,

Thanks Jim, Randy. I am currently staying just a few miles outside of "the hummingbird capital of the world" a.k.a. Sierra Vista, AZ, so these little guys are buzzing around by the dozen all day. I got rained out of my plans so I started fooling around with shooting through a window, and then I decided I'd get a bit bolder - I setup a remote flash and stood stock-still about 3 feet from the feeder. I had to resist flinching as they swooped in past me, sounding like a giant fly or bee, and ended up finding a very interesting variety with iridescent blue throat feathers when lit:

http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/hb3s.jpg

He was especially skittish so it's not the best. I need to try again and put up another flash. This other, plainer one kept chasing him away too!

Thanks for the ID Trent. I hadn't looked into it yet. Randy, I'll have to check that out. I've always loved hummingbirds but they are fairly uncommon to see in GA as far as I know.

I just shot these and am editing on my laptop with hi-rez screen. It's a bit hard to tell if the detail is there as I am not used to this ~ 300dpi screen. I should print one for my mom, who is big into birding and such.

TrentM
29-Jul-2016, 17:55
Did you shoot that first photo in AZ? Then it is NOT a female Ruby-throat! If in Georgia, yes. Ruby throats summer on the eastern seaboard and Piedmont, and winter in South America. They visit us here in Florida twice a year; going down to S.A., and coming back up.
Great shots! They are fast little devils!

Thanks Trent and Pali! Yes these are all in AZ, I am here for 3 weeks on business. Most of this upcoming week I have off to do what I want though! There's a book here somewhere with photos/descriptions of all the hummingbird types but I can't seem to put my hands on it.

Bryan, all you have to do is put up a feeder in late winter early spring depending on where you are. 1 to 3 solution of sugar and water. If competing with other feeders enrich the ratio a bit. They will come and most likely stay till mid fall. Most are Ruby Throats but there are two other species here in GA. The female ruby throat have no color underneath. I used to get a lot of immature with partial red on the throat. There is another species I have seen here that has a nearly black throat.

There will always be a dominate hummer around the feeder, a male most of the time. Though the young ones try. The real kicker is when there are two feeders close to each other. Talk about a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Hummers do not feed exclusively on nectar. They also eat bugs. If you do put up a feeder keep it filled as in climates where it gets cool at night they need the energy to make it to sunrise. Very entertaining little things and they will get accustomed to you. Mine hardly ever flinch when I walk by the window. I have had them land on the feeder while I was taking it down to fill it as if saying "NO YOU DON"T!". Even had a female land on my knee once while a male tried to mate with her.

Corran

I'll definitely have to get a feeder and try at my new house, thanks for the tips!

"There is another species I have seen here that has a nearly black throat. "

Marty, that would be the "Black chinned" hummer. They're supposed down here too, but I've only seen them on Grand Bahama.
Bryan, I've always enjoyed your large format photos, but these birds are something totally different; a different mindset.

Thanks Trent, that's always nice to hear. I really wish I had my LF gear here in AZ! But it couldn't fit and I need the DSLR for the work I am doing.

I don't know anything about cactus but there were a few dead ones out there like this. I got there early (7am) but it got real hot quick (which is when I escaped to a cave tour). I definitely should go back in the evening. I would love to shoot startrails here but weather has been poor lately. It's cloudy again tonight otherwise I'd be out right now shooting.

I'm still feeling the landscape out. Most of my photos are garbage right now because I just don't know what to do in this place, so obviously different from south GA / FL of course!

Right?! Well the remoteness of their house was not a good thing today. I went out a ways to the Ruby Ghost Town. As I started on my way home a massive storm hit. It rained and rained and when I had navigated back to just half a mile from their house I came to a wash you have to cross. Of course with the buckets of rain it was a raging torrent. So I had to sleep in the car for a couple of hours until the water went down to a manageable level that I could drive through safely. Made it home around midnight.

Here's a couple shots from Ruby:

Did you know the D800e has a B&W mode?

jp
1-Aug-2016, 09:07
Bryan, I'd like to visit that area too, but perhaps during a cold season!

I spent Saturday swimming at a lake to stay cool. Part of the deal with being at the lake is that you are not surrounded by trees and get some "big sky". Summer clouds are different here, so I keep my IR converted D800 handy. It does a great job with dynamic range for a digital camera.

Marty, yes I often set the D800 to b&w to help me visualize a scene as such but I edit RAW for everything anyway - better control of individual color values in a b&w conversion.
