Was experimenting yesterday -
My wife's piano caught my eye -
Wanted to see how well the reflection of the keys against the backboard would turn out.

The lighting was rather dim with a standing incandescent fixture off to the left and some end of day natural light from across the room. 6 sec.@ f8, digital camera.

Thanks, Ari.
Nothing wrong with LR /PS. You achieved an interesting mood and lovely quality in the image.

Scott,
That's a great image in your post 10497. The lack of scale makes it even more abstract and interesting.
Looks like it could also be something out of an electron microscope !

Hi Dennis,
I didn't mean to apologize about digital, just that you may have inferred in your previous post that it was a wet print.

Also, I'd love to see your piano image, but the file stops loading about 1/5 of the way through; maybe it's too large a file, or something's wrong with my internet service.

Oddly enough, I have just been photographing a keyboard with an eye to the reflection of the keys on the backboard. An old harmonium (pump organ), in my case. Your image is very elegant, and I'm jealous about the piano.

Thank you for the kind comment.

I hope you will post your harmonium image. I'm sure it has an interesting keyboard.

You may be glad to know the piano is played daily. In fact, I enjoy awakening to Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann and others - courtesy of my wife who us a lifelong musician and starts her day by playing at the crack of dawn !

Ari, Dennis's piano image comes up fine on my iPad and I'm on a bouncing back and forth between Verizon 1X and extended 1x signal. Which is pretty poor as far as signals goes, so I'd be surprised if the file size was the problem. Hopefully the problem will resolve its self.

Dennis, nice image btw, man those Steinways sure are beautiful. Was at the Musical Instrument Museum a while back and they had a nice Steinway exhibit and a very interesting video about the company.

I have a lot of affection for desert plants.

Me too; their adaptation to such harsh environments is remarkable. Here's one from a truly tiny format camera, Panasonic ZS40 with a 1/2.3" sensor. My wife wanted a compact superzoom with some kind of viewfinder and this one fit the bill. She lets me use it sometimes.

I am indeed glad to hear it! That's the kind of dedication it takes to play well. I'll never play particularly well but even so I do enjoy the process. There's nothing for appreciating and understanding a piece of music like trying to play it. Rather like photography.

Scott, how do you get that lighting in most of your shots? I'm assuming it's in post processing (burning and dodging in wetprint, or Photoshop), but could be wrong. Or do you do multiple shots, to get more dynamic range? The desert here has the same plants and scenes, but they never look like that!

Doesn't matter how well you play, it's important that you enjoy the process - you will improve over time. I truly believe that having such interests are a benefit to good health in many respects.

BTW: you caught the reflection well.

Hey Garrett. It's single frame digital (old 5D with a super takumar). Most of the light is there when I take the photo. I suppose you could call it previsualization but essentially I know how different values will end up with my normal processing. The other part is the conversion to black and white. As with film, color filters can be applied to enhance certain values. The cool thing about digital is you can combine "filters", you can make some stronger than others, you can specify only part of the photo. An example of that would be using a yellow/green filter and a yellow filter. Then back off the yellow/green. Let's say the scene has a cloudy sky. You can get great contrast using a red filter just for it. Endless combinations but I usually don't have to make it that difficult. I also use masks that can enhance lights mids, or shadows. I "embed" toning that gives it a little extra definition in the values. Another tool I use is the camera review. I save a jpg with the raw. I set the contrast and tone to be similar to how I'll work it up. This gives me an idea in the field. The desert is full of great contrast that can be utilized to show its beauty.

Ari - Thanks, but I did not do anything after seeing Rogers comment - I assumed the problem was outside my control. Glad it resolved.

Roger - thanks for the compliment. Yes the Steinways are beautiful. Several years ago we had a tour of the factory here in NY (Long Island City) which was quite interesting. Amazing to see how they are constructed.

XP2 is very tolerant - I have done it semi-stand in Rodinal, in 1+49 HC-110, in Diafine, and even in Qualls' monobath, but that gets pretty grainy. The HC-110 gives the smoothest results (8 minutes at 20ºC, gentle agitation for first 30 seconds, then for 10 seconds once a minute).

Over the summer I found a really beautiful example of the Zeiss 21mm f/4.5 Biogon lens for the Contax rangefinder. Somehow I haven't really used it hardly at all, mostly because it sadly doesn't work on my Leica cameras as I thought it would with an Amedeo adapter. Anyway, I took a nice walk at one of my typical places in the brisk winter weather (finally) and shot a roll of T-Max 100 with my Contax III. This lens is phenomenal - really high contrast despite being an early uncoated version (or maybe single-coated?). Here's two shots:

Chris, I enjoy seeing photos from that industry and part of the coast! The boat owner is a bit risky to be not using jack stands to keep the boat upright.

Bryan; keep shooting; those are good.

On my out the door Friday morning, I looked up and was awestruck at the patterns in the cloud cover. As is typical, my infrared DSLR was ready, so I shot photos for a couple minutes before heading to work.

Hi Jason,
Those cloud images are remarkable ! At first glance, I thought they were images of water (looking down from a cliff) splashing against the shore. The antennas in #2 give it away.
The patterns are absolutely fantastic. Nice capture !

I have joined the meterless club for 35mm, having decided that I shoot MF and LF quite happily without a meter in the camera, so why not simplify things for 35mm? (I also have to dispose of lots of gear so that it won't be a problem for my wife when the leukemia comes back.) So I have done a deal with my enabler, the wonderful Jean at Camtec in Montreal, to reduce all my Leica gear to a 1963 M2 and silver 35 Lux, 50 Lux and 90 Summarit. The M2 arrived today, so I put a roll of Tri-X through it:

I think I know how your wife might feel. Mine is always saying, "I don't know how I'd cope if anything happened to you"... Not only do I have cameras and a darkroom that she understands nothing of, but also a shed with metal lathe and woodworking gear that I'm always tinkering with in the cause of photography.

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun working meterless. I do with pinhole, which is more forgiving with longer exposures, but when it all comes together it gives a little extra thrill. And then there's also developers like Diafine or divided Pyrocat which work wonders with negs that are are a little off in exposure. I think the rule is that if in doubt add a little more and let the developer cope.

Chris, I hope your remission breaks all records and you have yet many years to enjoy your art.

"Meterless"...I am confused. Just not a built-in meter in the camera, or not even using a hand-held meter, just relying on experience for setting exposure? Can someone elaborate?

A lot of us love Sunny 16 and used it since before modern meters. My first Pentax had no meter and I used it for 40 years, now I use a meter and mess up all the time with LF!

I meant no built in meter. I don't expect to have one in LF or MF cameras, so it's a bit liberating to realise that there's no reason to have one in a 35mm camera either. I did use a handheld meter, and each time I used it I tried to apply Sunny 16 for educational purposes, but in the 10/10 cloud cover and low sun of a Nova Scotian December, it seems to be more like Sunny 8!

Here's two shots:

http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/gbcontaxiii-2957ss.jpg

I like this last one and need to go back and shoot a similar composition on 4x5, or maybe 8x10...

These are Amazing!

I really had to clean this one up. Now I see how photoshop got so 'popular' as a joke because of the enhancements. The noise was terrible and caused a photoshopping effect on the skin. Which of course people love because then they are all smooth and shit. It was low light without a flash. I already had to crank the iso to 3200 on the 5D. I constantly had to open up wide just to get an appropriate exposure. Then I'd miss the dof....I think over half were easy toss aways because of lack of focus.

I thought I'd look through the countless thousands of RAW files I have and start processing them.

First up is one I shot at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico a couple years ago. It was a nice moonless night and about as dark of skies as you can get in North America.

This was processed from a single image, not a composite.

Nikon D600
Samyang 14mm F2.8 lens
F/4
25 second exposure
6400 ISO

For some reason, the Flickr photo look much more grainy and not a good representation of how it looks in Photoshop.

Yeah, I think it's just a nickname and really never gave much thought to it. But also doing a search I don't see much on it either. Hard Maple is probably more accurate for the Silver type species of Maple it most likely is I think. You can see in the background of the first picture how blond the wood is without the Lacquer finish on it.

When he bonded bottom Redhart wood base, he counterbored a space for a Russian coin that you can hear rattling around but you'd have to cut it out to get it.

I tried to develop 5 sheets in a go and one of them got lose and scratched the rest. This is after digital retouch.
This was a test to see if the low speed synced properly with a flash.

Well that was interesting - I wanted to experiment with room temperature C-41 development. So, Fuji Superia 400 at box speed, colour developer freshly made and diluted 1+9, 20ºC, 45 minutes semistand, blix at 20ºC for 6.5 minutes, stabiliser for 1 minute also at 20ºC. The negatives are fairly green, and when scanned look like the Lomo purple film. I cannot scan them with the X1 and get decent colours, but if I go through the whole scan the film base and lock it in Vuescan using the Nikon 9000, then scan as raw and use the ColorPerfect plug-in in PS I get useable pictures! The first few frames off the spiral (on the outside of the spiral) have sprocket hole surge marks, but the inner frames do not.

And to show the surge marks:

So next time I need a bit more agitation, and I think I need more development to reduce to colour cast. I could try for an hour instead of 45 minutes, and if that doesn't do it, I guess I will start altering the developer dilution to 1+8, 1+7 etc.

I tried again today with 20ºC C-41 development. This time I used 1+5 dilution of the colour developer (50ml of CD and 250ml water in a Paterson 35mm tank) for 50 minutes. I solved the surge marks from the sprocket holes that I got yesterday by using the swizzle stick for rotary agitation - 30 seconds every ten minutes. Followed with 6.5 minutes of blix at 20ºC and stabiliser. The negatives look a bit more like a normally developed film, but on scanning they still have a strong purple tint rather than the usual blue. Raw scans and inversion in ColorPerfect gets the colours just about spot on. Only very slight tweaks to colour temperature and tint were needed.

I make no claims for the subjects; I simply needed to expose the film to play with the developing! And it's -10ºC outside, so I didn't care to go out more than I had to.
So it seems like a workable method, but with pouring, diluting, 50 minutes of development and agitating every ten minutes, it tied me to the kitchen sink for about an hour and a half. Now this isn't quicker than heating the solutions in a water bath followed by the standard quick development, and at least I can go and do something else while the solutions warm up. Standard development also means I can scan with the X1 (which is quick) and get good colours. These need the magic of ColorPerfect, which means slow raw scans on the Nikon. I'll probably go back to 39ºC development, but it was fun to experiment.

Chris, just curious, do you ever print your work?

chrism
2-Feb-2016, 14:53
It's been a while since I last set up an enlarger in the washroom I call my darkroom. I do sometimes make inkjet prints, but recently my R3000 started blurting ink all over everything. Apparently the pads that wipe the heads are saturated, and blotting up what I can of the surplus with kitchen paper hasn't changed a thing. A similar thing happened to its predecessor, an R2400. I hope the P600 will arrive soon (and outlast me!)

Chris, also just curious, because I'm so jealous of your X1! :) Do you do scans for others?

chrism
2-Feb-2016, 16:33
I never have, but I don't see why not. It wouldn't even involve much effort and no judgement on my part if I did a 3F scan (http://www.knowhowtransfer.com/apps-photoshop-extension-filter-plugin/hasselblad-3f-raw-16bit-scan-service/) and let you use Flexcolor (downloadable from Hasselblad) or Photoshop (with the 3F plug-in) to turn it into whatever you wanted. The problem would be the size of the files—they are huge and would probably have to be returned on a DVD.

I have not been able to take decent images of birds for the last couple of years. Ever since I had my Nikon D2x converted to infrared. My D700 and D800 full frame cameras just did not have the reach needed with the lenses I have. Well, I just rectified that. I purchased a used Nikon D300 for a very reasonable price from KEH.com. I paid just $339.00 for an EX+ graded body. That included free shipping. This gives me the reach I have been missing. I plan on using the D300 for the next year, until the newly introduced D500 has proven itself. I will then purchase a new D500, and have the D300 converted to infrared. I will then sell the D2x.

Anyway here are the images:

My Dad spent a lot of time in a F-86 when I was a little kid - also a favorite of mine. Here is a Lockheed D-21 unmanned reconnaissance drone. The nasty thing is 42' long, with a 20' wing span, and flies at speeds in excess of Mach 3. Again, my aging Nikkor 85/1.4 - I love this glass.

Love the DR-21, SR, and U-2. Worked around one of them, as well as the Stealth and "other things." My friend trains drone pilots, and I asked him at Pima if he know what that D-21 was. He didn't. I said the first really fast drone!

I was using legacy Nikkor glass too. A 50/1.4 in LTM mount. My favorite 50mm lens. I have 2-3 of them.

Here is my wife checking how sharp the point is on an intake. Mig-21 if I recall, but it could have been something else....

Was visiting my parents this weekend, mostly because I had a photo shoot Saturday a bit far away so went ahead and drove the rest of the way to their place. Anyway, my mom raises various types of parrots, and she always has a bunch of babies when I visit. Since I happened to have my digital camera due to the photo shoot, I snapped a few photos for her as well. Here is one of them. I can never remember what variety is what though.

This was also a test of some cheap constant LED lights she bought to help her with photos and videos, as she does a ton of those for marketing. They were a bit cool in color temp but worked fairly well. I am thinking of getting one myself.

I started to PM you but decided that this might be of interest to others too - would you mind elaborating on these cheap LED lights and where to get them? I picked up, basically for a song, some hot lights with stands, reflectors etc. and, well, traditional hot photoflood lamps. It got me interested in setting up to play with some potraiture but I think people would like LEDs a lot more than the heat from photofloods! (And I'll be working in black and white, at least mostly, so not as concerned about the color temperature.)

She just bought two of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/272096516938

There are a multitude of similar items on eBay from China - I assume they are all similar, but this one I advised since it has some controls for brightness and also provides both cool and warm LED bulbs + diffusers to dial in temperature. They are pretty small and don't put out enough light for shooting with small apertures at a reasonable shutter speed, but they work well for what they are. I am sure there are similar products with much larger outputs (more bulbs) on eBay as well.

Roger Cole

Those are pretty cool, thanks. They are cheap enough that if the mechanical mounting details could be worked out one could just use multiple heads.

Corran
17-Mar-2016, 06:28
Yeah, a T-bar of some sort would suffice for that. I was thinking of buying one to attach to a flash bracket for use with various film cameras, as it is very light, and would provide enough light to shoot reasonably in darker environments.

Scott, do you ever talk about/divulge your processing? Do you mind questions?

This is a bit weird. I looked up the super tak, confirmed it likely refers to the pentax 50. The weird part is that I have an old Honeywell Spotmatic Pentax - so I had to go look at the lens. Yup. 1.4 Its absolutely clear I need to put a roll through that keepsake. It was an Aunt's camera that stunned me as a child - with how cool it looked. That's what got me interested in photography originally. If that lense is all that's said about it - it would be worth buying a camera that mounted it if this old honeywell Pentax isn't healthy. Very weird. Other people make finds like that (in their closet no less)- not me.

I still have my Honeywell Spotmatic w/50mm f1.4 lens, purchased new in 1970. It's a good camera/lens setup at just about any aperture, but start shooting wide open and you won't believe your eyes.

scheinfluger - thank you. I always saw Pentax as capable, but not particularly noteworthy. Like most makers, they usually have a lens that hits it way out of the park & it sounds like Pentax did w/ this 50. What better lens do do it with? If I'm understanding Scott correctly, he has adapted that lens to a Canon digital? I don't know if anyone would know if this is possible also to a Nikon mount? Would it be worth it? 'Makes me wonder if some of the 6x7 lens are favorably comparable to the zeiss glass for the 'blad - to get a similar satisfaction w/ MF.

From you, Scott, that makes my day. 'Quite serious there. Its Portland First Pres. This bldg was done in 1890, Carpenter Gothic style w/ something like 14 species of carved wood. Less than a year w/ all manual camera (blad). It was the most difficult day for metering & shooting. I had access to the lighting, but left them off. The only light was through the stained glass windows on a rainy day. Shortest exposure was 30s. 3 were 3m. I know there are many here for whom that's no particular challenge, but I can see the curvature of the earth between my skills and theirs.
'Hope you & yours had a fine day. Thanks for commenting on this or any other. Positive/negative - doesn't matter. I'm voracious for skilled feedback. Thank You again!

So I have a problem...and that problem is classic German and Japanese rangefinders and lenses! I just can't help myself when I find a deal on a nice early Contax, Leica, or Nikon lens that I don't have. A while ago I found some mint examples of the Zeiss 21mm f/4.5 and 35mm f/2.8 Biogon lenses for the Contax rangefinder for peanuts. Due to just not shooting a lot of 35mm film lately I didn't use them till finally yesterday when I scouted a new location.

And I am not easily impressed with small format photos, but the sharpness, tones, and feel from these lenses is fantastic. I was really surprised. Shot with my Bessa R2S on TMX/Acufine.

When I was young, I used to love to watch the storms roll in from my bedroom. My parents had a two-story house near the top of a hill so I had a great view.

Here in the flatlands of south GA, there's not too much in the way of hills, and lots of tall pine trees, so not a great view usually. So today I did a bit of storm-chasing. I saw on the radar a major front was headed mostly northeast and so I thought I could watch it roll by just south. I guess the winds changed and it came more east and overtook my position. Lots of rain and wind for about a half hour but luckily there is a small shelter nearby so I was fine. These two photos were just moments before it hit, about halfway up a fire tower.

Great work, Jon.
Would love to know about your choice of lenses for the above shots.

Thanks! I used my new Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens. All of these were at 500mm.

I'm dealing with some software issues for my 135 scanner and haven't had a chance to work on it, and still getting my stuff together for 4x5.

In the meantime, I figured I'd share some of my digital stuff from this winter. Let me know what you think!

Nice Myrtle shot, I'll be there next Fall. Just got back a roll of Fuji 400, taken on my Leica M3 with the Canon 35/2 LTM.

Lovely toning Scott!

I often carry my (t)rusty Mamiya ZM, nowadays usually with a 28/2.8 and some very outdated (10+ years) TMX loaded in it. Just capturing random things I come across.

I went down to the nearest wharf to see if the boats were in the water for the upcoming lobster season, but only the traps are set out for loading. I rather wished I had a colour film as all the floats are painted in various colours to show who owns them, and all those lines are various bright colours too. Never mind, I chose XP2 as it was dull and overcast with rain and flurries in the air.
