Ha!
This is one of a pair of boots a friend found in the desert. I picked the least interesting side to start with, but I am making slow progress. I had hoped to get this on film by now but still working out some camera issues. Anyway, I think this might be the closest I can get with a digiroid to what I want from the P67 without using PS.

Seems like a nice mix of character light and shape. If you shoot it with film, I'd be curious to try some solarized prints.

You guys want small format? Here is something on Super 8mm...movie film...that has been degraded time and again. So maybe it is equivalent to 2mm?

Here is a freeze frame sampling from a 1975 student film I made for my final exam in film class. Sadly, the school would not allow me to show it. Babs does a reprise of a little trick with a cigarette she performed in the 1950's hoochie shows with the carnival.

Dan, Not much PS at all - beyond a curve and dodging the petals slightly.
Raw Photo Processor is good for holding a very wide range during conversion. After that it just requires a print curve in PS.
It’s window light, feathered here and there. Not shown in the setup is a large piece of cardboard tacked to the the far window shutter to feather off the background. I just get light objects to merge out from the dark areas. I need a b&w print for a show so I’ll get round to doing it on 8x10 next week .

Over the years I have tried taking landscape photos of "pretty" scenes, and I found that it is difficult to do well. You'd think not--beautiful scenery should equal a beautiful photograph--but that is hardly the case. Scott seems to be able to succeed with both the mundane and the sublime, which is no easy feat.

I guess I can't comment either way due to "the rules" but I can show a photo. Today the students here rallied against disrespecting the flag and took to the campus mall en masse to support the symbol of our freedom. Lots of scanning to do as I shot 5 rolls of film...

Yes, they are miners of gold in Alaska, here the series is named Gold Fever, or something like that. It's sort of "B" plan when you have nothing good on TV and outside is raining or worst,

Keep posting, great series,

So you might've seen my little town and place of employment on the news recently due to some protesters desecrating the flag in the name of political activism.

I guess I can't comment either way due to "the rules" but I can show a photo. Today the students here rallied against disrespecting the flag and took to the campus mall en masse to support the symbol of our freedom. Lots of scanning to do as I shot 5 rolls of film...

More images, if you don't mind:

Agree! So an update - there is now a manhunt on for the lead protester whose backpack was found with a gun in it, after making statements that could be construed as threatening and terroristic. (These statements meant as information, not politics! :))

Another rally on Friday, with currently over 3,000 people possibly coming. I will be shooting more images!

For now, here's a patriotic dog:

I am not sure about Hidden Dunes. There is this group of what appears to be dunes also to the NW, on the left as you drop into the valley from the Big Pine side. I was intrigued by these.....and what might be behind them.

Scott, I didn't realise these were so good; now I know why you use it so much. I have an old Pentax MX body and am thinking I should look out for a 1.4/50. I have been playing with Qualls' monobath, and find it works with no problems on 4x5 in a tray, but yesterday I used it for the first time in 35mm. Almost every frame had drag marks next to each sprocket hole. I decided to ignore the advice on the New55 site about no agitation, and put another roll of Plus-X into a Rondinax, so that it would have continuous rotation.
This was the best of yesterday's film, with barely visible drag marks:

Forced perspectives are fun. They say the 50mm is suppose to be approx to human eye's FOV but the moon seems to always look too small in diameter when photographed with one on 35mm format compared to what I see. I think a 70mm makes the moon more about the size I see but I dunno.

Chris: when doing 4x5 in the tray, are you basically doing stand? - my understanding with the monobath you dont want to use agitation

chrism
5-May-2015, 16:00
Derek,
My recent experience says otherwise! In the trays I just rocked them gently, as I hadn't read the New55 advice at that time. When I saw the stripes of drag marks on the Plus-X, I spent a couple of hours doing various google searches for monobath + agitation and read all I could find. Essentially, the only info out there is what New55 wrote. Now with those marks being caused by solution flowing through the sprocket holes I can see that a complete stand development with absolutely no movement might work too, but given that my only prior experience with bromide drag was with Diafine - for which the cure is more agitation - I decided to go that way first.

Chris:

thanks for the info. When I found the recipe for the monobath I wanted to give it a try. I think id like to try with sheet film as I tray develop my sheets one at a time and it takes quite a while to get thru all the sheets.

Here's a photo I took with my D610. It's a converted tug boat out on the San Francisco Bay now serving duty as a fireboat. The lens used is an AI converted 35mm f/2 that was brand new in 1973. Photo was taken in JPG and the only post processing was to crop it and reduce its size.

Beautiful photo of a beautiful dog. I love black dogs, I had a few Scottish Terrorists, They are fantastic little dogs, but real bears to photograph, almost like trying to photograph a cat. They don't take direction very well. Randy is so right, they are not only thoughtful, but take direction very well.

Learning to visualize based on subject and format is a focus for me right now. I have resisted the 35mm bug until a month ago when I picked up a Leica reasonably. One of the reasons that I resisted 35mm so long was the fact that I saw 35mm as so flat and lifeless compared to the larger formats. To me, very often, though not always, this is true. As I research past 35mm masters (Bresson, etc) I look for ways that they saw the world through 35mm and how they made it work regardless of my perceived limitations of the format. It occurs to me that in this small format that the subject and the story is more important than ever as you cannot rely nor expect other aspects of the image to carry the visual impact of the image. Well, that is unless you are intentionally using grain as part of your visual approach (something that I want to experiment with soon.

This image was shot using the Leica and Tri-X 400.

With inspiration and some encouragement from Messrs. Schroeder, I began searching for an Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f:1.4 lens to use on my Canon EOS 5D Mark III (5D3). As luck would have it, my local photo shop had a copy on their "used" shelf that I picked-up for $60.00. Today's mail I received a lens adapter from Amazon and spent a little time experimenting with the combination. Here are two simple images taken in my living room using the north facing window for my light source. Based on this initial trial, the darn lens worked like a champ on my 5D3. I'm a seriously happy boy and look forward to more experimentation.

And… ? (the trick)

m

Previously I had stripy surge marks from each sprocket hole when the film was developed in conventional tanks, and while the current advice for the commercial version of this recipe is no agitation (which works for sheet film and probably 120, though I haven't tried that yet) I decided to go to extremes to get some idea of what was happening. I did some inversions and got stripes, and then I did no agitation at all, but got stripes at the lower edge of the film, presumably as the solution was poured in. Given all the surge marks are perpendicular to the edge of the film, I tried a Rondinax tank, in which the reel sits on its edge and is rotated to dip all of the film into the solution. Any marks, I reasoned, ought to run parallel to the film edge and be confined to the unused border. So I poured in slowly whilst turning the reel gently and slowly, I then set my timer for six minutes and continued to turn slowly and gently. Success.
There is a small Flickr group for monobaths, and quite a few photos there have stripy drag marks, so I'm not the only one having the issue. I didn't get it with 4x5, and I think 120 would be OK as there are no sprocket holes to cause the problem. It occurs to me that using the rotation stick to twist the reel in a Paterson tank as the solution is poured in might also work.

Thanks Scott. So far, I've not had an issue with the 5D3 mirror and shooting at infinity. Still experimenting, so I'm not ready to make a final decree on that issue. I was very lucky getting this quality at such a terrific price. Wonderful glass, built like a small tank, focus is smooth as silk, and the f/stop ring works very precisely. I could have easily bought one for $150 - $200 on eBay and not done any better. I appreciate your response to my inquiries on this lens; it made a big difference in my decision. Now, if I could get my grandkids to pose for my 5D3 super tak 50 like your son, I'll be a real happy camper!

Inside Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles off the coast of Key West. A fascinating and beautiful site. I want to camp here sometime in the future. My girlfriend and I took a ferry out to the island and had a few hours to explore the small island and fort, unfortunately at the worst time of day (it was scorching hot of course, and the light was harsh).

I almost schlepped my 4x5 kit out there with me but I didn't know what to expect space-wise on the ship. Shot some MF too but I do wish I would've had a tripod and a view camera. Next time...

LOL Randy, not quite! My girlfriend and I are searching for new jobs in a new place...but I especially have a somewhat narrow and uncommon specialty/skill set so it's tough. Ready to get out of the southeast!!

Sorry for flooding the thread. Shot 15 rolls of film down in the Keys last weekend. Meagan and I found a fantastic traditional Noodle Shop, complete with Shogun statue. I shot two frames and stitched them in software. I want an XPan, ha!

Jeff, very nice to see the tak working well for you.

Thanks Scott. File this under the heading of "aging shooter forgets his roots and how spoiled he has become shooting with modern camera/lens technology". As I'm slowly learning, shooting tight head shots of the grandkids at f/2 is a tricky business - especially with my manual focus Super Tak lens. I missed on this image by a fraction and it is a tad soft. Gratefully, the impromptu pose saves the day. Grandson #1 is a stud to hang with Papa while I fumble turning the focus ring. His little sister is just a natural born poser. Now I just need to get my middle grandson to hold still for just a moment.

Early Nikon lens/camera history is really fascinating to me, especially in the immediate post-WWII era and their shift from military optics to consumer lenses/cameras. Along those lines, I was delighted to find recently a Nikkor 5cm f/3.5 collapsible M39-mount lens for very little money. This lens was I believe their first camera lens, originally designed for the Hansa Kwanon, Canon's first foray into consumer 35mm cameras! The camera and lens were copies of the Leica screwmount camera of the era and the venerable Leica Elmar 5cm f/3.5 (Tessar design, or close to it).

It's an early model in the serial # block of the Canon J-mount era, but luckily for me has a Leica screwmount (the L vs. J mounts are simply the difference between a couple TPI on the machining). This lens was probably made around 1945.

Anyway, I had to try it, so I shot a roll in evening light. Here's a couple of boring shots but they show the character of the lens:

Yep, SPUR HRX is a developer. I believe the only place to get it in the USA is at Freestyle:
http://www.freestylephoto.biz/12039-Spur-HRX-Film-Developer-2x250ml

It's pretty expensive so I actually imported a bunch from Europe* since I liked it so much. It works beautifully with "classic" films.

*However I just found yesterday when developing this that one of the bottles had a tiny little crack and most of my Part B leaked out!! I wrote the company asking for a replacement. Really not happy about that considering the cost!

Jonathan - I am a huge fan of your work and I have been trying to see if I can even attempt to reproduce your flower images with not nearly as much success. Now looking at this image it is clear to me that you and I programmed very differently because I would have never made this photo or care to even look at this scene. This is an example of an amazing, beautiful, and a peaceful image that I wish I can make but I know I never will.

Thanks, although there is a long tradition of this kind of thing. Stieglitz, Strand, Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Minor White, to name a few practitioners. Nothing wrong with wearing your influences on your sleeve, though.

What an extraordinarily nice thing to say. Just so you know, this was the ONLY decent image from a roll of 36. The others were embarrassing stinkers. To find this shot I ended up doing exactly what I do around the house: the street-level scenes were too visually busy for my taste, so I pointed the camera up and away from the clutter and managed to find a slice of quietude.

As for the flower photos, keep at it and you'll get there in your own way. I've taken more failed flower images than I'd care to admit, but those failures (as trite as it sounds) paved the way for the good ones.

When I shot 35mm, I was pleased to get one decent image from 36. That's reasonable.
