My wife and I have a running joke, abbreviated to MS80, which stands for "mandatory sax of the 80s," because pretty much every 80s pop song and/or video had a sax in it somewhere. Anytime we're in the car listening to the radio or watching TV from the period one of us will call out "MS80!" when we hear the tell-tale sound of a sax kick in. Fortunately this affliction seems to have been eradicated, but obviously some of my own photos from the 80s suffer from this disease.

In spring of 1981 I bought the album "Boy" by U2. A friend and I went to Joshua Tree (from Wyoming) to climb, and the whole way out we alternated that with "London Calling." Now that's not really the point of the story. After a week in JT he went home and I went up to San Francisco to visit my cousin. The next morning I opened the paper and saw that U2 was playing a small club (the Waldorf) that night! We went and got in no problem. They were phenomenal, but just as good was the second (of three) bands, Romeo Void. And what really made them was the sax. (Well, the vocalist, too. Actually the whole band was excellent.) If you've never heard "Never Say Never" and are a fan of post-punk pop, pull it up on Youtube.

I didn't mean to suggest that I'm not a fan of the saxophone. (I have one in my attic, in fact, that I used to play in junior high school.) It's just that some things that are trends only seem so in retrospect. It never occurred to me in the 1980s that music would someday sound "80s" and what that might mean.

+1 for Romeo Void.

Corran, yes with some vertical adjustment and highlight enhancement I would like this. Particularly like the contrast between the water tower and the tower in the right image - although they convey a divided interest I like the way they compete for the viewers interest. The wide angle distortion is intriguing.

I was just looking at the foreground which seems quite flat (lacking in highlights), but of course that's simply a matter of the artists intent. It's also a bit unfair to make judgements based on a much compressed web image.

I seem to have a lot of trouble maintaining contrast and particularly highlight detail when running my small jpeg images through Flickr; but haven't really worked out a way to compensate for that yet.

And since we're on the topic, and this is the safe haven, here are a couple I shot from the right seat of a friend's Mooney on a flight back in 2009. Nikon Coolpix 995 P&S. I wouldn't be flying into and so close to clouds myself not yet being instrument rated - but someday. ;) The view alone when you break out on top is worth the time, effort and money, never mind the vastly increased utility to personal flying not being limited to visual weather.

I remember looking out the back of the helicopter I was on and going "this is just too perfect". Looking back I am kicking my self for not digging out my Speed Graphic to also take a shot as well. I had used it earlier, but had packed it back up due to how dark it was getting.

Editing to add that while it looks quite and peaceful, those things are deafening loud (we didn't shutdown to refuel). We were getting fuel in the middle of our mission because we have to move cargo and food to the Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) and we spent 9 hours doing it. As we got ready to leave one of the FOBs we decided to lift up out of our landing zone, drop into an adjacent river bed until we had picked up enough air speed and pull a max climb to gain enough altitude to minimize the chance of getting shot at.

Hi Ari. I do it in PS using luminosity masks to "embed" the tone throughout the tonal range.
What's a luminosity mask? http://goodlight.us/writing/videos/videos-1.html

I only use "lights" and "darks" to do this. This is easy enough to do. Just go to 'channels' grab the RGB channel and take it down to the 'selection' circle thing. Create a new 'solid layer' with this mask, choose a color (I like 7D6A2B),change the layer to 'soft light' and opacity to 75%.
To do the darks, you use the rgb channel, select, then make it the inverse selection. Create a new solid layer, choose a color, change layer to soft light, and opacity to 50%
So you can play with the color, the opacity, etc.

For a bump in microcontrast, I will also use the same masks and create brightness/contrast layers. For the lights I bump the contrast +10 and the darks +5. Sometimes I bump it again depending on the image and the highlights/shadows. Then you can up or down that contrast level.

on page 663 of this thread you had a nice image of your daughter. I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of toning it so you could see it on one of your own photographs.

Sure thing Randy. the tone can be blue, pink, whatever you like.....
I tend toward warm tones so this is a milder version of some of the sepia I've seen.
To play in the warm tones, the color I posted is a nice place to start and then fiddle with the blue channel. It has a big effect on the warmth.

Up until now, I've been using the canned toning palette in Silver Efex, but it has minimum controls.
I love these tones, and thanks for showing me that with a photo of my daughter.

And here is what I would do in Nik's Silver Efex; a different tone to be sure, but it's done in such broad strokes, whereas your method is much more precise.

I love Wisconsin and the North Woods. I was born and raised Minnesota, spent my childhood in the woods.

Planning a short motorcycle trip early September, my favorite Chef has relocated to Mineral Point. It may be my last bike trip, gotta pack a small bike carefully with my Voigtländer Perkeo II.

Not the North Woods, but rolling farmland is pretty darn good also. We once had 80 acres an hour North of Madison.

Nice concert shots. The LED lights being used these days have such a narrow spectrum it is making things more difficult on the photography end.

On the subject of high ISO, I was just at a wedding reception this weekend and had my D800 along on auto ISO and snapped a shot in low light that ended up ISO 4500 and it turned out decent, tone-wise, for a spontaneous candid shot. Certainly not as smooth as ISO 100 but, heck, good enough when you have no time to think about it and a bit tipsy from drinking the spirits there, I feel.

Planning a short motorcycle trip early September, my favorite Chef has relocated to Mineral Point.

Mineral Point?

My best friend was born in Prairie du Chien, and raised in Mineral Point. He packed all his belongings into a 1963 Ford Econoline van and moved out to Washington in 1976, and has lived out here ever since.

His family is huge, he has (had) 4 brothers and 4 sisters. His brother just younger than him died suddenly a few years ago. His dad came out in the 1980's and stayed for a few years, but his mom refused to leave the farm. So then his dad eventually returned.

His mom passed away a few years ago, and his dad died earlier this year, so my friend has been going back there once a month to get things taken care of. Going through things, selling stuff, getting the farm ready for sale. His older brother and he are executors, so they meet and do all the stuff that needs done.

I went through there a few years ago, the town is a nice, old style Wisconsin place. Good people there, for sure.

I listen to WFMT a Chicago classical music radio station and darn it, but they have been advertising Mineral Point for weeks. I may not like it anymore. I will visit my friends restaurant, shoot some pics and skedaddle for remote area's.

I know most of the county roads and they make for great slow travelling and I never top a rise at high speed as a tractor may be occupying the whole road. Wave and move on.

They have a bicycle race in that area which is considered the toughest in the Midwest, with the constant elevation changes. http://www.horriblyhilly.com/

I may trace the route, no way can I bicycle any of it.

Still hot here, but I bet it changes colder in 2 weeks.

Lith printing is really fun. I haven't done any in a long time, but I feel like getting back to it. Scott, what papers are you using? I used to use Sterling Lith, but that's long gone.

Scott Schroeder

Peter, it is indeed fun! I like the subjectivity of development...it's very similar to doing wetplate.
Here is something I wrote up on APUG because I'm using a strong version of lith developer and it marries with fomatone mg 133 REALLY well IMHO.

Strong Lith Developer

Somewhere in between traditional printing and lith printing, is yet another world.
It’s a lot of fun in my opinion. It’s a great 'normal'-ish developer in its own right but has diversity.
If you have never done ‘normal’ lith printing this might be a bit maddening….
There is no set development time.
It’s more intuitive and has what is called a ‘snatch point’ to get the sucker out of there….
Longer, too strong; shorter, too weak.
I have very limited use of developers so I’m interested in what the experienced have to say.
I tweaked the ‘whole’ system to work well with this. At current, I’m shooting 35mm using ilford delta at 50 developed in rollo pyro for 7min.
I’ve found it gives nice ‘straight’ prints with the other variables below.
So, this is what I’m doing:
I buy the arista powder from Freestyle.
30ml Arista A, 25ml Arista B, 120ml room temp water.
6:5:24
Don't ask how I came up with the ratio....I've long forgotten....
If I was to give it a name I guess I'd call it SLD or SLD6524 ;-)

Anyway, this is the small amount I use for 5X7 and smaller prints in a 5X7 tray.
It’s just enough to cover the print.
It creates a nice warm tone with Fomatone MG. I like the velvet so I’m using the 133.
If I use the 00 filter I gain control of the blacks a bit more.
For an idea on exposure with this combo it’s about 1min at f/11.
There is still a snatch point but it builds up a bit slower so its easier to tell I think.
The first print is ready in about 3 mins or so with the developer at room temp (78F tap today) and times increase from there, but not too bad.
You could heat it up like normal lith printing, but since it’s strong I just do without.
I think it ‘lasts’ a bit longer too. It’s really a fun journey.
The earlier prints are more of standard development but have a nice lith shift.
I’ve become pretty comfortable with a snatch if I’ve found the right area to look at.
If so, I just skip to another negative. I can get that satisfied even without dodging and burning.
If you keep going with more prints or longer time of dev just sitting(oxidizing), you will get the more lithy look.
I’m not using old brown, just mix it and go for a run with a negative, then toss.
A 'run' can be 3-4 prints or 10. I haven't gone that far but it all depends on what you are after and how lithy you want it. I find myself sometimes just wanting to use it more as a normal developer and stopping.
As with regular lith, it will get to a point of 'who knows what will happen'...

The Arista powder costs $18 and makes a gallon each of A and B.
So it’s really pretty cheap compared to paper if you make it a 3-4 shot dev, especially for a nice tone and a lot of fun. The tone can shift depending on how much light you feed it. It's very warm. Tannish, olive out of the fixer.
Selenium is VERY effective. It kind of has it’s own snatch point depending on what you are after. I like to just bring in the blacks a bit and pull it. That’s in the 15-20s range usually.
That’s keeps the warm tone. If you keep going it’s still have a nice tone but will start to get purpley. If you keeeeep going (2min) it will be a deep red/brown.
The dry down is pretty significant, especially if you did Selenium. That’s when you need to know your snatch point. However, if you know how to compensate for it, I think it’s a pretty badass looking print, in hand, compared to all the other normal dev/paper combos I tried.
For those that make lith prints, I think you’ll still have lots of fun with this. I can say that the bleach back in the fixer isn’t as much so look out for that.
I’m very interested in what others experience, especially with other papers.
I'm low on MGWT but I think I have some snippets to tryout. That and a couple of others I'm curious about, so I continue to update. I like fomatone but never cared too much for the pinks. The stronger the developer got, the bigger the shift away.

A few pages back, I shared some concert photos from my Nikon digital. Some discussion was had about what may or may not have been possible with film.

Well, here's two photos that I actually took with my F4, on Fuji Superia 1600 (exposed at 1000). Of course the results are not even in the same league, in terms of detail/tonality, but it's definitely a different look than the digital.

I forgot to bring my 80B filter, oops, but the film did pretty good despite the incandescent lights:

Here;s another one with strong lith. I preflashed to get the highlights to behave. Other than that it's a straight print. I'm just really loving the tone. I didn't use selenium this time because i got some nice blacks. It can cause a shift in tone as well if it's in there too long.

Very nice grays Jonathan.

The tonality was decent on these, although I was wildly guessing at the exposures because of reciprocity. The longest shot was six minutes and the shortest was 35 seconds. Next time I'll expose a bit less and pull the development a tiny bit more or try semi-stand instead.

Thanks Jonathan, these night shots will challenge the sensors of digital cameras as well but the difference is you know immediately it's like the new Polaroid . The D600 and D800 nikons have some of the best dynamic range sensors out there but there are plenty of scenes beyond the sensors range. Also there are ways to use HDR to increase the range without looking like HDR but I'm not yet that sophisticated with it yet. And of course you have a histogram of the image right on the camera so you can check the exposure to see if you kept it all within the sensors dynamic range, while you view the image. Plus the noise reduction algorithms on these newer more high end cameras allows you to shoot at higher ISO settings without much loss.
My god I sound like a camera salesman, I'm not really I'm just very excited about how digital cameras have liberated my shooting in general (kind of a born again digital photography zealot).

Why thanks. I shot a half roll of color film too for the first time there. As with these BW I didn't use a light meter since they have become predictable out in the Sun on BW anyway. But we'll see if that holds true for the color.

It's taken me playing around with hot lights for still lifes recently to finally understand this. I keep spot metering each subject's shadow areas but no matter what the EV is almost always between 9 and 10, accounting for minor changes in the placement of the lights. The sun would be a pretty consistent light source whose brightness under typical conditions never changes. In other words, duh! No wonder those old pros didn't need light meters.

Oh, and I enjoy your dunes as well.

Nice rocket series, Austin. I think they call this one a converging diverging nozzle (the diverging end of it anyway). The design permits super sonic speed by eliminating some kind of back pressure or something if I recall correctly from my fluid mechanics class many years ago.

Major Fugazi kick tonight plus revisiting old scans.

In 2002 I saw Fugazi play at Fort Reno Park in Washington, DC. It remains the best live show of any band I've ever seen. I stood a yard from the stage and couldn't hear so well the next day or so. This was the crowd behind me, captured by thrusting my backwards-facing Nikon as high as I could reach and firing off a bunch of frames. Focus is off, there's motion blur, and I don't give a shit.

Nikon F4e (the best variant), Kodak TMax p3200 at EI6400, and a lens I don't specifically remember, probably a 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor S•C.

Is that just the name of the cemetery, the kind of occupants that are buried there or both?

austin granger
10-Sep-2013, 08:47
Occupants. Only coondogs (as opposed to squirrel dogs or rabbit dogs or fox hounds) are allowed to be buried there, and there were dozen of them. There were some interesting headstones and memorials there (dogs climbing up trees and so forth) but the light was pretty harsh and it was about a million degrees with a billion percent humidity so we didn't stick around long. My family is pretty patient with my photographing but they have their limits.

I must be old as I'm wondering who the hell Fugazi is or was.

Age has little to nothing to do it. Fugazi was a band that was always fiercely independent. So much so that not many people really knew them. Those who did, though, knew and appreciated how great they were. The show from the photo was actually their last concert played in the US, though of course nobody knew it at the time. They never officially disbanded, but have been on hiatus since the end of 2002. They all seem busy with other rewarding projects. Truly I wish them well. I would love for them to make new music again, but having already contributed so much, I cannot begin to begrudge their moving on.

Thanks for the beer offer Pat. I would have taken you up on it but unfortunately, I was only down that way for a couple of hours. My wife and kids and I were on vacation in Memphis and I snuck off by myself early one morning to explore. Being a longtime blues fanatic, that area is almost mythical to me so it was a kind of pilgrimage. I made it to Clarksdale and explored a little and then visited the site of Muddy Waters's cabin. I'll post some pictures soon. Anyway, I'd love to go back sometime and give it better attention. I'll drop you a line if I do.

This is not a very good star trail shot. It wasn't taken very late at night but with the moon out and all the city lights it probably wouldn't be much better later on.

This equatorial sundial is not oriented correctly. It's more for show than go anyway. The dial should be pointing at the celestial pole (North Star) and you can see (barely) it's not. I measured it's direction with an app on my phone and it happens to be off about equal to the magnetic declination for this area. But what is even more strange is that it probably was oriented correctly at one point. If they used magnetic north it would be pointing east of north. But this is pointing west of north. So perhaps it was adjusted twice for magnetic declination. One easy method to align a sundial is to wait for a sunny day, calculate the time the sun transits its meridian and set the dial to read noon at that time.

By the way, the trails in the Pentax shot look a little bent in some places, which is weird. Was the camera jiggling during the exposure?

Here's a shot from the wilds of Florida. I was waaay out in the middle of nowhere in a huge WMA with some friends. Shot with my Bessa R2S and CV heliar 50/3.5:

Yeah, mostly the upper ones. I think the film moved in the camera during the long exposure. The temp cooled off and condensation started forming on the camera. The tripod was also setting on those rocks. And parts of sundial, if examined 1:1, is also a bit double vision blurry kind of thing. But beats me.

Pretty fancy Club!

I wish I had a camera years ago, when I found a bar with empty windows, doors, meaning missing and a dirt floor. No chairs and the booze was in a fold up box. It must have been a dry county as they seemed ready to grab the liquor box and run.

I had 2 silent drinks and left quickly.

Of course taking pictures might have been a very bad idea...

Thanks. That's a pretty cool cloud lift going over it. Yeah, it's still around as are the others. I think the government wanted to tear these old fire lookouts down but the local mountaineers clubs, in cooperation with the WA State Parks, now maintain them. I've been up there a bunch of times over the course of many years. They lower those window covers in the winter. Inside are some pretty cool old photos going back as far as ~1908. One of a guy on top of the lookout with his 8x10 camera around that time.

Peter thats another great one. Is this a recent Lith print?
I've been playing around with a strong lith (1:4) and having a good time.
I'm also playing with some different combinations or toning and/or when I tone.

Here is one on fomatone mg. After stopping development I toned it in thiourea then fixed it.
http://www.apug.org/gallery1/files/3/0/9/0/130918_001.jpg

Here I toned in thiourea, then bleached all the way down to blacks and redeveloped in IT8 (http://www.lostlabours.co.uk/photography/formulae/toners/tonerIT8.htm), then bleach and toned in thiourea again.
Interesting effect....

Thanks. No, it was from a long time ago, back with Sterling Lith was still available. The development time for this print, when the developer was at the ideal state, was around 45 minutes. Out of a box of 100 sheets, and about 2 weeks of work, I have one print that turned out the way I wanted. The developer would exhaust at just the wrong time, I'd miss the ideal snatch point, and I had some problems with toning that I eventually traced to hard water. In spite of all that, or maybe because of that, it's the print I'm most proud of.

Nice work with the lith prints. Your examples are making me want to do some traditional printing, which I haven't done for a long time.

Scott Schroeder
21-Sep-2013, 13:48
I had done some contact prints with wet plate ambrotypes but just got into enlarging a few months ago. I bought an old canon a1 off ebay for cheap then a 35mm besseler for $50.
With this stronger lith it makes the snatch point a bit more forgiving in my opinion. Lots of room but I have to be pretty careful with dry down and toning for the blacks. So sometimes I go a bit too long....
I think I like lith because it's like wet plate in a way. It's kind of unpredictable and gives a unique look(s). Usually different every time... ;-) But I think it's cool because it looks like a photograph. It's nowhere near a 'real' interpretation of the scene.
I do mine on my washer and dryer with dark sheets hung up... ;-D

It's been years since I last took a photograph of my trusty Harley so here she is.

It's that time of year again! Tonight was the opening home game of the football season. It was rainy and dark (night game).
I shot some random stuff with my Pentax 67 and 105mm & 165mm lenses on Portra 800 (drying now) and some TMY with the 300mm lens. Here's a couple from the 300mm, wide-open, handheld @ 1/250, TMY pushed to 3200 in Acufine. Sometimes ultimate image quality isn't the point :)

Neat shots, Bryan. Those are some pretty challenging lighting conditions!

Wow! It looks like a shark swallowing a dragonfly.

I lived on an aircraft carrier for four years and I've still never seen anything like it. Wild!

Thanks! It's a lot of work, and very tight fit (just inches), but we can fit two of them into a C-5. We also had a AV-8B Harrier in the cargo bay with our helo.

I wanted to get in on the clouds, but there were literally none while I was in Afghanistan. But I've got some now to work with.

This has got a good pre-dawn mood to it, and I like the way the florescent lights echo the streets below. The center part also look a bit like an eyeball, as if we were inside your head. Nice!

Great cloud photos Scott,
When I've been in the SW (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona) I've had too many pure blue skies.
Here's one though....the negatives are good too even though the prints take some work.102248

Some images with my new (to me) Mamiya 7, purchased here from Luc Benac. The dune is in Christmas Valley, Oregon, and the other images are from Fremont Canyon, Wyoming.

Those bins are very familiar looking. The third from the left appears to have some sort of spiritual quality...
