Thank you for the kind words. I have always loved simplicity. The beauty and expansiveness of the landscape around us was stunning so I wanted to capture the feeling of that moment, a great memory for both of us.

I have to admit, I got a little crazy on this trip. I had the following cameras with me: Deardorff 4x5 Special (shot a wedding group portrait), Pentax 67 (these shots), Mamiya C330 (misc travel shots), Holga (for my wife to have fun with) and my Polaroid 100 Land Camera (guest pictures at the wedding). I think I have issues. And I like them. :)

A friend from work gave me his father's old Fujica, and at the bottom of the little bag was an unopened roll of Kodak Gold 200 with a 1993 expiration date. The Fujica might work, it seems like the rangefinder is off, but the shutter does fire. I decided to play with the film with my Leica M6TTL, rather than test both the film and the old camera at the same time. I shot it at 100 to try to compensate for the age, but probably should have gone for 50 or 64 instead, as the negatives were a bit thin and extra grainy. I don't think I'm going to seek out 20 year old budget film, but it was fun to play with that one roll. I had no idea the colors would be so "artistic."

My wife has a recurrent, early appointment in the Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco, so I have been spending about hour or so each week shooting shop windows at about dawn. All these: Hasselblad 501C, 60 mm Distagon, HP5+. My first venture into stand development: Rodinal 1:100 for one hour, 30 second agitation to start and two inversion at 30 minutes. Very sharp, but lots of grain with this combo. Not sure I would recommend it to others.

Cool cat shot!

As for the MX, I have an MX and an LX. Don't tell my LX, but I think I actually enjoy shooting with the MX more. It's a great little camera with one of the best viewfinders around. The whole thing just feels right. It's small, but not fidgity. If I wanted another manual k mount body I'd be looking for another one.

Thanks. A right place; right time shot. The Super SE has a diagonal split plus micro prism focus viewfinder. Very bright with that f1.2 on it and amazing how modern cameras don't even come close to the quality of viewfinders these days. But I guess they don't need to with their automagic features.

Sooo, FF *does* make a huge difference from a crop body.
Especially with this lens, on my FF bodies, I want to say EVERYTHING blooms/glows/halos at f1.2
I have deliberately not used either of my FF bodies, using just the FujiFilm X-E1.
I like it.
FINALLY, got a "dreamy" style rendering from the below combination.

I really, really like these. And here's the thing - I'm really into deep blacks, dark tones, high contrast, etc. Photos that consist largely of middle-ish grays should theoretically (and often do) leave me unimpressed, or worse. These work so beautifully, though. You've made me really appreciate something here that I would typically not be into at all. Well done, sir.

Thank you all! As I mostly pride myself on making portraits, these are more of a departure for me. The Oregon Coast has a quite specific feel that I would describe as soft, moody and enveloping. For these images I was attempting to capture that feeling in a moment that I could remember every time I look at them. I'm thinking about making large prints to hang on the living room wall to keep these feelings fresh as the pressures of day-to-day life set in. Not sure which one to start with yet. :)

David, your comments I find particularly satisfying as I also love perspectives that make me rethink my previously held views.

Thanks again!

Testing the focus on my new Rolleiflex 2.8a tessar. Almost my new favorite camera. It's heavier and less balanced (tippier) than a automat 3.5 tessar, my only minor complaint. It's got the automat style layout which I prefer over the monster focus knob. It's got a 10-blade iris like the automat tessar. I'd much rather have a 2.8a or automat over something newer. Both take better detailed photos than I can scan.

Indeed! I have more than one roll of just shots of people taking pictures. I'll look for the garbage can next time I'm there.

Fooling around with my new (old) Pentax 67, now that I'm back into shooting with the Pentax system. Cheap no-name film from somewhere shot at EI 40, T-Max developer 1:25 semi-stand, with the 55mm f/4 lens:

Also a test of resolution with the Cezanne, since I've scanned a bunch of 6x7 negatives with my old Nikon LS-8000 and I know what it's capable of. The results are about the same, if not a little better for the Cezanne. Huzzah!

Your screen counts pixels. A 1024 pixel wide image will appear bigger on screen than a 720 pixel wide will.

150 dpi is a printer setting. For online images you have to ignore dpi or ppi and just reduce the image to about 750 actual pixels on one side or the other. I size the images I post to be 750 pixels on the longest side. Also, convert the image to sRGB to accommodate monitors' color space.

I have been saving my web images at 150 dpi for future use on better monitors, so I won't have to re-size the past. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I want to future proof some things...

any suggestions?

The 150 dpi that you're saving your images at for hi res monitors is irrelevant. The pixels per inch designation doesn't matter for monitors. All that matters is the total pixel count. You can't tell your monitor how many pixels to display per inch, that is already determined by the manufacturer. The monitor will look at your image and display the image with however many pixels for every inch of screen space that are available.
For online posting you may just have to save a file specifically for web posts at a reduced size, web color space, and an amount of compression that makes online viewing and posting appropriate.

a) You're looking at a frozen stream in the Scottish Highlands, shot on a C330s with PanF, or

11-Apr-2013, 16:26
Colin, there is even more we don't know.

I am pretty sure when we post a picture here, by linking to an outside URL, we are dooming this site to obscurity. As I surf the mighty LFF, I find lots of little cracked icon gizmos that represent photos unable to load. Well, I think those are all from closed websites, of which there are legion. Our predecessors linked to their stored images, which are now lost to the vapor.

Sure many images here are just vanity, but many are also tied to valuable information. When I post my X-RAY mistakes, I am creating a hopeful permanent record that others could learn from. If we post images of camera, lens and gizmos that no longer exist, we hope to have that image as future reference, again for others that will surely follow this trail for as long as civilization exists. The web is the new Alexandria Library. Let's not fill it with empty images.

Now, if, you are conducting much vaunted due diligence and look first for answer and then and only then may we raise our hand, we have already seen a lot of nothing.

I may be wrong and I am sure someone will tell me how wrong I am. Good, I would love better than to be wrong.

I also know this site has finite resources, I think I saw it has a 2 GB capacity. I don't want to wear out those electrons. The heavy ones are complaining.

Jim Galli
11-Apr-2013, 17:51
Randy, not sure how you're uploading images to your web site, but after they are there, you can right click on them and from the menu, click on "copy image location". I just did that at your front page and copied the location of one of your images.

http:// www.randymoe.com/_Media/north_pond_web_size_med.jpe g

I purposely put the space in .jpeg to break that link for now. Now then if I type your picture location here the web site here will pull up your picture from your web pages. So here goes;

http://www.randymoe.com/_Media/north_pond_web_size_med.jpeg

Hope that helps. Don't put any spaces etc. in. just blahblahblahwhateveryourimagelocationis and see what you get. Now if the picture was bigger at your pages, it would come up bigger here. That one is 430X343 pixels. About 720 pixels wide is a good number. How do you downsize your pictures for the web?

I shot her 15 years ago. If she's alive she's still doing it. She was most likely Eastern European, drove an old car and brought big bags of something to feed. They would circle and flock, quite a sight. No one ever approached as there were just too many birds. Maybe 10,000, it was a lot. they blocked out the light and the view of her. My image was 35mm and is somewhere...wasn't very good. Not worth finding.

It's actually one of their Leica mount rangefinder lenses from the 50s, the dawn of Japanese optics replacing German glass. It's the lens David Douglas Duncan used to shoot the Korean War for Life. He said it was the best lens he'd ever used, and started everyone wanting to buy them. In a short time, Nikon became the most recognized camera company in the world. Good history of all there here: http://keppler.popphoto.com/blog/2007/10/inside-straig-1.html#more

Well, you said "Leica mount," so I meant Leica M. They started making those sometime in the 50s, IIRC, so, without knowing more specifically what year yours was made, I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info.

I *had* one of those Nikkor-SC 5cm 1.5's(ya, the 1.5, the first one that was only sold for a year before the 1.4 was released), just sold it. Very nice lens.

Mine was in an S-mount, used it with an S3 and some other lenses.
Very sharp, even wide open. And a pretty-damn-perfect circular aperture made for some nice OOF blur renditioning!

Since yall are interested, here is a comparison I did between three early Sonnar type LTM lenses, the Nikkor 1.4, the Canon 1.5, and the Jupiter 3. They are distinctly different, but I'm liking the Nikkor best because you can get the soft focus effect wide open, whereas the others start out sharp even wide open.

I love my D800E. It really shines compared to the D700 - every time I use both at a gig, all the D700 files are just rubbish looking. Not just resolution though - color and tonality, etc.
I wouldn't sweat the E or regular models honestly.

Yeah, interested to know what Randy didn't like. I will admit the removal of the focus select knob thing and changes in the AF were a bit annoying at first, but I got used to it.

I use to have the 67 generation of that lens. It was nice. I traded it in for the 165mm LS which I needed more at the time. There are many generations of the Pentax 6x7 lenses. Some have only changed cosmetically from one generation to the next while others also changed their optical design. If you haven't visited this Pentax 6x7 Lens Guide (http://antiquecameras.net/pentax6x7lenses.htm) before it is worth checking out. It also rates the lenses relative to other Pentax 6x7 lenses.

Yep, I've referenced that site many times! At one point in time a couple of years ago I had just about every lens you could possibly have for the Pentax. All of it sold to fund my entry to 4x5. But now I'm getting a few pieces and building up a kit again.

Beautiful shot!! The 300mm ED is one lens I've never owned, and probably won't. I have used the older 300mm but I was disappointing. Picked one up again though last week for almost nothing, so I'll have to test it again.

Thanks. A friend had the older 300mm. He couldn't get a sharp shot to save his life. It turned out it was that massive weight cantilevered off the body and the camera's curtain shake. Once he added a tripod support collar to the lens and used a larger tripod, things improved. Shooting 300mm and up on a Pentax 6x7, you need to anchor that camera down and either shoot a long exposure or get the shutter speed up above 1/60th, I've experienced. I put one of my light stand sand bags over the lens next to the body to dampen the action of the shutter curtain when I can.

I will use my F5, D70 and D7000 until they fail.

Huh? I googled that, and it sure looks like Ken loves it, even if he does say he prefers his Canon 5D MkIII because it has image quality just as good at anything less than a 6' wide print and is easier to use. Here's his last page "recommendation"

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d800.htm#rex

"The D800 is the best DSLR ever made by anyone at any price. I've got a D800 already, and have a D800E on order. There is no comparison."

Granted I did not read the entire review. There's no way I'm dropping $3k, or $1k for that matter, on a DSLR right now so I'm not interested enough to read the entire thing. But he sounds enthusiastic.

Tin Can

Ken got a lot of flack for his early tests of both the 800 and 800E. He has changed his tone somewhat, if you WERE in the market, you should read it all.

Many Landscape shooters love the 800E. I hated the menus and inability to save settings like a D7000 does.

If you watch the used camera sales, many people are dumping their 800 series cameras, they are nearly impossible to sell used. I sent mine to KEH, so I wouldn't have an unhappy buyer. KEH can handle that.

Ken does recommend the D600, as better and cheaper. He really recommends buying a Nikon refurbished D7000 for $750, even over the new D7100.

I am too deep into Nikon to switch to Canon or I would!

The colors, tonality, crop-ability of the insane 36mp resolution, all add up to a stunning camera for my commercial usage (that gator is a 50% crop since I didn't have a long lens with me and still could be printed 16" wide with no problems for instance).

Thanks. It was my first time with the new Portra 400 and I wasn't sure about its reciprocity characteristics. I used my one-degree spotmeter and metered off the space needle and placed the white 3 stops above the middle gray exposure which measured EV 2 and that probably wasn't accurate because it didn't fill the whole one-degree circle. I went with it anyway and shot 30 sec, 1 min, 2min and 4 min at f11. The film has some good latitude. All looked pretty good except the 4min was over cooked. I scanned the 1 min exposure. Here is a 100% crop scanned at 2000 dpi ( I should have done 4000 in retrospect). And that flag is supported is why its not too blurry.

In 2001 my wife found a beautiful condition Kodak Retina IIIc at a local camera shop. She wanted to buy it as a camera for her to use, separate from my stuff. I thought that was great, so we bought it and I immediately put a roll of HP5+ in it for her.

Well....she never shot a single image with it. Over the years I would take it out and shoot a few frames, but it always felt like "her" camera, so I didn't do this very often. Yesterday I shot the last picture on the roll and developed it. (Man, am I rusty with 35mm. I had a hell of a time loading the reel. Sheet film is so much easier.) Below are a few shots from the past 12 years.

Testing my new Baby Graphic 2x3 with some junk Shanghai film. Figured out infinity focus with some scotch tape across the film rails since I'm missing the focus panel (got one you'd sell? (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?102406-WTB-Graflok-style-ground-glass-panel-and-glass-for-Baby-Crown-Graphic-2x3-size)), and I assumed that the Kalart was correctly calibrated. This was focused wide-open about 6ft away and shot at 1/25 handheld. I guess it's calibrated! Lens was the 80mm f/2.8 Xenotar. Now the question is, shouldn't this be considered LF? I'll post here first, but it is a field camera with bellows and movements. Just not using sheet film, which is also usually okay in the LF section.

There was a big debate about certain cameras and what constitutes LF. It's all in the archives. What it boiled down to was what the moderators decided, which I'm not sure about regarding this camera (the main issue before I believe was 6x17 roll-film cameras that couldn't take sheet film). I'll post a few in the Image Sharing forum and if someone cries foul it'll be back to the "Safe Haven" for the 2x3.

Good to know, and funny as I cannot afford a 6X17 back or camera, but I am considering cutting sheets to that format either before after exposure and enlarging using my yet to be delivered 6X17 negative carrier. Where does that put the format?

So many rules to break...

Right, well, that was part of the debate. And we aren't the ones making the rules of course :).

I had a DaYi 6x17 extension back for my 4x5 and didn't like it. I prefer a 6x12 back and cropping the top/bottom as I see fit if I'm shooting a panorama. But that's just me.

Yes, we are the students.

I am not big on 6X17 format at all, but as you known, I grab a deal when I see it. The carriers, both glass and glassless, are coming with a 5X7 dichro head. The price was right. 8X10 heads are still expensive, despite all the claims here that all big enlargers and heads are free.

I will try 6X17 just to try it. I am trying to focus on 2X3, 5X7 and 7X11, all very similar. And I already have all I need, in those formats, except 7X11 holders.

Yes. "Lovely" is exactly the right word. A lovely face in lovely light, with a lot of interesting, contrasting textures as ground; and the incongruous necklaces and binky add a note of whimsy. Very nicely done.

If you can't get your hands on a Petzval, try blending a normal exposure with an under-exposed shot done with a strong flou filter (it doesn't work with an over-exposed flou shot). This is a version done today with an old screw mount Taylor&Hobson 50mm f1.5 on a Monochrom.

And here was I,including an article on Meter Calibration on the back of my Process Form..is it fair to ask if a "slightly less than "meaty" neg is actually optimum for scanned negs?
Being stuck with wet process myself, I would chuck an extra stop at most exposures, but,I cut my teeth on exposures for press repro, and such niceties as tonal range were, shall we say,irrelevant..

Austin, do you ever take a BAD photograph? I mean, I'd assume most people have more misses than hits but with the number of hits you post, you'd have to be shooting and processing and printing (I think you print digitally but that's seldom much quicker overall) nearly non-stop? Do anything else? Ever stop to breathe or eat? ;)

I could remove the experiment, but why waste life on old news.

I need to rehang them as I miss them on my wall.

Thank you Roger. That's very kind. I do spend a lot of time on my photography (I breathe and eat between shots), but if you could see my contact sheets you would know that I continue to make a great many bad pictures. I don't know what my 'batting average' is of decent pictures but let's just say if I were a baseball player, they'd be sending me back down to the minor leagues.
