I'm drawn to photograph the coast and find that beaches offer an unlimited source of material. These four are views or seascapes but I find lots of other micro-landscapes on the shores too.

It was very windy and the camera could not be held steady on the tripod. I gave up on the idea of a sharp image, defocussed slightly and stopped down to f/90 to try to induce some diffraction.

Maris: I like how you caught the reflection of the moon.

A fresh water stream cuts across Sunshine Beach and sometimes sand blocks its outlet to the sea. I saw the still pool a few days before full moon and thought a moon reflection might be a possibility. The secret, if there is one, is to attemp the photograph the day before full moon. If I wait until calendar full moon the moon rises too late, the sky and foreground are swallowed by the blackness of night, and I end up with a desperately thin negative with a black dot on it; a common failure.

The moon is 0.5 degrees wide so it occupies 1/4 the area of the sensor spot in my 1 degree spot-meter. Using the straight reading therefore places the moon no higher than Zone VII even if the sky is black. I made the exposure before "black sky" time and the moon fell on about Zone VI. Too high a placement burns out the "man in the moon" face and a moonrise looks the same as a sunrise.

It's nice that a view camera permits the Scheimpflug condition so holding focus from the foreground rocks to the moon at a relatively wide aperture (f16) was easy. I needed the wide aperture to reduce shutter speed so that the moon wouldn't blur. Remember, the moon moves its own width across the sky in two minutes!

Timing was the chancy part. As the moon is rising the day is darkening and I can't wait too long BUT the moon has to rise high enough to bring its reflection into view. Then a land squall, the edge of a thunder strorm, starts to send a line of angry cloud to sea. The moon will be covered in minutes. At nearly the last moment I have to fire the shutter and the result is the result. It's sheer luck that two unknown people walk into frame, anchor the composition, and watch the same moonrise.

While all this fancy art-stuff is happening I'm jumping around and slapping. A still pool has many friends but mosquitos are by far the most numerous.
