When I convert a colored photograph to black and white, usually I leave it as RGB file rather than changing it to grayscale. In the printer, do I choose color to print or the advanced black and white (ABW) mode:confused: ?. I have access to an Epson 4880.

Thanks

Select ABW in the driver. It will convert RGB input to grayscale. You will however have to match the gamma of the image data to the tone curve you've selected with ABW settings. The best way to do this is to get as close as possible with the settings, then add a linearization profile (invoked with Photoshop Manages Colors) created with something like QTR-Create-ICC from the QuadToneRIP package.

Sorry if this is a more complicated answer than you were after :-).

Dowload QTR and give it a trial (free trial, $50 if you want to keep it). It's pretty easy to use and does a better job IMHO than Advanced B&W. www.harrington.com (I think).
