Tested a Graphic-Kowa 1:9 / 305mm mounted on my Eastman View Camera No. 2 8x10. Anyone have any experience with this lens ?

Just a quick shot to assess what this lens may be like for soft focus portraits. Image was a little overexposed as the lens came off a graphic copy system I believe but I got it for next to nothing and mounted it on a makeshift lens board with no shutter so I manually used a lens cap as a shutter. I had to play with the image level a bit after scanning which I don't normally do. Will have to experiment a little more with this lens.

It's not a soft focus lens, although maybe it can be made into one by changing the spacing of the cells.

A new decade, a new silver bath!
Today I got to make a few test plates with my new silver bath - the one I just retired was choked with alcohol and iodides/bromides. Its been treated to remove impurities, but it will need silver nitrate added to restore it to fully usable, so I have to wait for more AgNO3 to arrive.
So, this is a 5x7 negative made with the Voigtlander Petzval lens, no Waterhouse stops used. Exposure was 7 minutes at f3.2 using Quinn's negative collodion recipe, which I must admit works very well, and doesn't go funky nearly as fast as Coffer's #7 for negs.

OK, Jim. In your honor here's a shot from a lens I found the other day. I put it together for Per's workshop with you in 2009. I tried one shot with it back then and put it away until the other day when it turned up again. I put a couple of sheets of 8x10 Kodak Xray in the holder and took it out for a spin. It is a sort of landscape meniscus (a faint resemblance) and is about 500 mm focal length. It does interesting things. This is wide open at f/9.199204

I've just caught up with 3 years' worth of scanning, and I took the time to spot an image to make sure everything was ok. I realize I haven't posted any images here in quite some time, I have started experimenting with soft focus after seeing the images in this thread among others. The following image was with a 14.5" Verito, on a new-to-me Gundlach Korona (since my ROC Universal couldn't fit the Verito), using the rear element only, a home-made bed extension, and Galli shutter. I thought there might be some motion blur when I first scanned, but when I did the spotting I saw that there was not, there's quite a lot of detail in the leaves in the shadows. After shooting this, I got myself a sturdier camera (B&J) and changed my tripod head. Shot on 8x10 Agfa double-sided X-ray film.

This is from an 8X10 inch wet plate collodion negative made with the Ektar lens on the Deardorff. Exposure was 8 minutes (yes, you read that right) at f6.3 using Quinn Jacobson's collodion for negatives and corresponding developer.

Thanks. I used some correction to make the vertical window frame lines vertical, yes. I've not used the Commercial Ektar, so I don't know how they compare. I suspect they aren't very different. Anyone know for sure? Jim?

Nothing wrong with that, now is there?!
Coincidentally, today I received a 10” f4.5 Kodak Anastigmat barrel lens I paid $50 for. I had to take it apart to clean the glass surfaces, but it is pretty much spotless. I did some 5x7 test plates this afternoon but haven’t scanned them yet. I used it wide open and it was quite sharp in the places it was meant to be. I think I’m going to like it. Some of the old uncoated lenses work beautifully with the wet plate process.

Breaking in a NEW soft focus lens today. I'll just show images and not throw lens names around. I was favorably impressed. The ground glass was telling me this lens has a ton of possibilities. OK, the big reveal. All four of you. The lens is a 15" Wollensak Telephoto with the rear group removed and the front facing the film. Cost me $63 bucks with shipping and tax. Don't you love paying tax on yard sale ebay stuff now? With no rear group and reversed direction it becomes an 11" f7 lens. But the shutter can be used as before, just not the aperture scale.

I bought a little single lens meniscus in shutter from the "Great Mr. Galli" back around 2005 and it sat in my camera bag for about 5-6 years before I decided to try it out. After developing the film it sat in my files until now. I've been sheltering in place since the beginning March so I decided to pull the negative out and scan it. Jim, I hope it meets your approval.

99% of you don't care and that's great, but for the other 8 of you who used to follow my funny little web site for the different soft focus lens comparisons, I finally figured out how to put together some new WYSIWYG pages with KompoZer.

Photrio is now the ONLY forum where I have any presence. I'm totally gone (and not missed) at the other place. Ce La Vie.

I hadn't put up any new pages at my little site because Netscape Composer got so old it didn't work any more, and I was busy hauling home ridiculous antique cars and neglecting the web pages. I never really stopped making photos though. So, FWIW, here is a link that takes you to 2 new pages I just built today!! Yippee.

I knew you'd be excited! I'm the inverse of gone but not forgotten. Forgotten but not gone.

No cookie cutter web site for me! Oh no, I'm keeping the quirky weird 1992 one alive!

What is Jim's handle at APUG?

I also miss him, and he sold good deals

What I liked best, was he shot at home or close to it

'fine art' be damned

He responded to my Aerographic posting yesterday.

Last month I bought a Norma board with small hole from him really reasonably. Came in a coupla days!

Yesterday:

Great looking neg. I'd have been all over that 5" stuff because of the #5 Cirkut but I don't want to deal with the perfs so sat on my hands. Both the Aviphot and the Kodak had the perfs. BTW never needed to clip the corners because the stuff curls into the emulsion enough that even in the dark there's no wondering which side is which. The AviPhot is less so than the Kodak. Almost lays flat. So make everybody nuts . . . how much is each 5X7 neg costing you?? Part of the fun is bragging rights.

I just copied and pasted his post to me from yesterday. The thread I started about 2402 Aerographic film

Why don't you go over to Phototrio and send him an instant message? I think he's around

This is a test shot (my Shorty Norma) French Kodak 18x24cm Mammo Film, processed in D23 1:1. Taking camera is my new Annie/Avedon inspired 8x10 Norma. I applied 30 degrees of front and rear swing, the Norma original recessed lensboard is sharp all the way across the field. I like how the DOF drops off with the 360mm f5.6 Norma Symmar. There appears to be highlight blooming, which I find kind of attractive. Best thing about this film was that it was not at all expensive. And I have a lot of it. 500 sheets right now

My "Shorty Sawed-Off Norma" has a basic rail cut down, to just accomodate a 120mm lens. Here it is shown with the 47mm f8 Super Angulon, which I am looking forward to using a lot with 2x3 and 6x9. This is not a telephoto camera, but I can easily lift and carry it with one hand without strain. The lowly Star-D tripod is sturdy enough with this setup, given proper time to settle down. I cut both ends off a basic Norma rail with my Lil Machine Shop Bandsaw. So it is now simply a hollow tube perfect length for Field and Architecture.

I'd take this rig over a wooden field camera IMO. Radical camera movements are easily possible. Accessories are abundant. Weight cut down to bare minimum. Really shines with 2x3 and 6x9. Does all I need to do with 4x5 wide. Really light to carry around, can carry it one-handed. Normas are priced across the board, I paid a lot for my first one. Bargains are around too :)

Kodak Aerographic Five Inch Plus-X cut seven inches, to fit a 5x7 Lisco Holder. 5x7 Sinar Norma with my newly CLA'ed Schneider 500mm Tele Xenar at F22. Hasselblad 40mm Distagon Yellow Filter jammed inside the lenshood, it fits! D23 1:1 8x10 Unidrum on Uniroller. 5x7 Contact Print on Arista #2 RC Dektol 1:2 The Tele-Xenar is quite sharp up front as you can see. I'm liking this film for 5x7, but I can also cut it to 4x5 or even 9x12cm. Like the tonality you get with the Aerial emulsion.

Tim Kelly Inspired Broncolor Balloon 90 degrees left, lighting the entire set. Main light Broncolor C171 Monolight Pulsoflex Softbox, one stop brighter than the fill, 45 left to the set. Just out of camera shot 45 right, is a foamcore freestanding panel for passive fill. Finally, the creme on the sundae, is Broncolor C70 Monolight with Snoot and Handmade Grid from an olde Broncolor Honeycomb. Selective lighting a small portion of the background. Just because
