This elephant is keep sake from a trip to England some years ago. It has had a place in our home since. The photo was made with a little 6 inch F4 magic lantern lens I just purchased, mounted on a Speed Graflex. The focus point was the eye; the light was from a lamp on the table. The elephant is only about 3 inches in height.

Ektascan bra is currently The Shizz for xray "play" film. Single sided, red safelight compatible, cheap, poor reciprocity, etc...

Yes, closer to wide open. I usually shoot at around f5 and these were closer to wide open (f4). It's touchy how much variation there is in once stop.

Verito/speed graphic/fp4+ again... First I saw the light beams, then the light filtering in the background, then the arrangement of tree trunks seemed not random. I see the trunks will standout when converted to B&W tones. The shadows and positioning of the trees looked like they were a dynamic unit of trees that had something in common. Their positions in relation to each other implied some sort of mystery dynamics and relationship like the people in a busy Seurat painting. People in school would have asked what I'm smoking but coffee is my only "vice". People here would say I'm spouting Mumbo Jumbo. Maybe so.

A really nice use of the Verito lens. The closer line of trees is clearly sharp, with slight out of focus aberrations which get increasingly more out of focus where it helps the most - where the light rays are filtering through branches in the background. You could call it a purposeful, textbook use of the diffused focus lens - great shot!

Thank you Ken.

Here is the first two of 16 more negative of the same subject. I went after theses photos out back in the woods behind the house and only took 8 sheets and used them quicker than I thought. I went out again today with 12 sheets and used them up too, slowing down only because the sun went behind a cloud a few times requiring me to stop and wait. It's a joy to see these scenes on the ground glass; white snow bathed in slightly warm afternoon light, lavender shadows, gray and brown trees, green sprills. I don't think I could do color soft focus though, and I definitely can't paint it with any justice.

This first photo of this post I think is pretty rich with the style of a hundred years ago. People were not afraid to make a soft photo if it did the subject right. The 2nd photo is closer to f5.6 and sharpens up a little.

Our woods have enough snow so that I can snowshoe over a downed tree and not know it was there, but for a random branch sticking out of the snow. Same setup as the other photos, but closer to f4. Some of these I used the tripod as a bipod setting a leg on each snowshoe.

Not so important with this photo, but with the other photos, I stuck with the verito because it was a good choice among my different soft focus lenses for this subject. For 4x5, I have two veritos, a gundlach hyperion, pipe & spaghetti, and a reinhold wollaston meniscus. Many of the snow photos have foreground material that is out of focus. This one is all in-focus and beyond, but I stuck with the verito to be consistent. The verito seems to do a good job with the out of focus foreground compared to the wollaston and the hyperion. I have not sufficiently tested the pipe & spaghetti to have a conclusion on that. The wollaston and hyperion do a good job with the out of focus in the background mostly. As you can see, the verito is up to the challenge as well. It comes down to shooting lots of film and in different situations to drive decisions on which lens to take. The hyperion and wollaston are kind of long compared to a 7.25" verito as well, which is kinda wide for a soft focus lens and useful in these scenes.

Same setup. This old Lincoln has a 3 dimensional shape to the grille; it's interesting to see how the intensity of the glow changes in the out of focus highlights on the grille. I am used to visually seeing the size of the glow change with the focus rather than the intensity.

My friend just finished (well maybe it's never finished) building this street rod and wanted it to be photographed. I set up on the shady side of the car (not what one would normally do) because of my interest in masses of light and dark rather than details (as practiced in Notan composition). I knew I'd get some nice areas of glow too. I put the tripod down low, got ready for a photo and had to wait about ten minutes for the background to clear. Someone's muscle car had broke down in the immediate background and people milled about for a while tending to that. Then people were always checking out cars and wandering about. Finally, when things were as clear as they were going to get, I made a photo. This is with the 7.25" verito; my sorta wide angle soft focus lens. The car is primer gray rather than a glossy finish so the glow is subdued where the paint is.

7.25" Verito; big depth of field here at 5.6: Most of the length of the car is adequately in focus. The soft focus lenses typically have a pretty good range of "sort of in focus" behind what you focus on.

JP, you have been busy...

The soft focus lenses typically have a pretty good range of "sort of in focus" behind what you focus on.
I have discovered that also - shooting with my 190mm Reinholds Wallonston Meniscus (poor mans Verito?), I have found just that - such a wonderful slow, gradual blending of in focus to out of focus. I have fallen in love with that look.

Yup, increased depth-of-field is what Dallmeyer originally intended as the effect from the 1867 Dallmeyer Patent Portrait soft focus lens. The halo you see around highlights is the image of highlights focused on another plane due to spherical aberration. Close down the aperture to cut off the outside areas of the lens (where the spherical aberration comes from), and the aberrations (and softness) go away, while the conventional depth of field, of course, increases.

Sorry for getting all pedantic. Lovely images from the Hyperion and the Verito! (A hard choice to make if you could have only one... )

jp

Sorry for getting all pedantic. Lovely images from the Hyperion and the Verito! (A hard choice to make if you could have only one... )

Thank you! My choice between the two lenses has so far been field of view (the 7.25 is of course wider than a 9") and the focusing. The Verito seems to render foreground things nicer. The Hyperion does not render foreground things well but makes the background extra buttery smooth. Chalk this up to the differences in how spherical aberration is handled. For someone that can pick just one, you can't go wrong with either.

I think pretty highly of the Reinhold wollaston meniscus as well after extensive use, but it's taking a break so that I may become proficient in some other soft focus lenses.

Wouldn't a fake Cobra be fun! Or a Stodgy Lincoln Sedan. There was one like that upside down in a wash in Manhattan Nevada for years and we never paid much attention. Now I look back and wonder. Somebody would kill just to have the rust free Nevada floor from that car even if nothing else was salvable.

Wonderful images!

As much as I like cars, if I had a real cobra I'd sell it and retire. A good fake one would be fun though. I have an aluminum body Jaguar XJR right now, and used the supercharged V8 to pass someone today on a straight back road. My 5yo daughter said she started smiling, then as I went faster she said her smile got even bigger. I'm sure my wife would not let the kids ride in a cobra like car.

More car show pix with the speed graphic and 9" Gundlach Hyperion. FP4+ in pyrocat hd. Many people never lower their large format camera below chest height. It's a shame because good car photos come at all heights. This packard I had to put the camera up high because it's a BIG car and I wanted to look down a little into the engine. The street rod, I got down real low so the circles would line up between the headlight, the whitewall reflection of the next car, and the wheel center.

Jim,

This is a B&L lens that looks like it was used as some type of projection lens. It is labeled 15 in. EF Bausch and Lomb Optical Co. Rochester N.Y. Beyond that it has three elements and I believe the PO reversed the middle glass to achieve this effect. It's not labeled but I believe that it is around an f8.

Starting to finally get snow here, I like it for photography. Not compatible with most old cars though.

I'm a student of the pictorialist movement, and many of there photos if you saw them in an exhibit were pretty dark. So much so they sometimes went through tremendous effort (Struss) to make them extra dark and moody. Not every scene lends it self to that of course, but I think it's fun to have that in mind when printing. This is a pretty boring image as a B&W scan like a silver print. It was super cool all iridescent blue and green and solarized after it came out of the UV box. I thought it was decent as a toned cyanotype in final form as well. The paper texture is not visible to the eye, just to the scanner; it's dark chocolate on cream paper.

9" gundlach hyperion, fp4+, arches platine, new cyanotype, tannic acid.

A test print just like the one above all solarized before development. I might have to start scanning these before developing! cell phone camera in dim light doesn't cut it.

I was going post this in "Photos made at close distance" but the "Galli style" section is more appropriate I suppose...

I mounted the front element of a Bausch-Lomb 5x8 Tessar in a tube so I could easily adjust it. In this photo it's probably 1/4" beyond the barrel front threads

Nice to revisit this thread ... so many great images.

Here are two recent ones of mine ... appropriately both were shot with lenses that came from Mr. Galli ... both shot on nearly full-frame 8x10 ... and, since they were made of the same subject, same lighting, wide open, and back-to-back they make a nice comparison of the two lenses ...

In barrel Imagon 300mm, fully open (no disk, around f4.8). The same bright but overcast day.

Sinar P2, Fomapan 100 in Rodinal, 5x7 (again cropped to 5x6 - light leak at bottom).

With the previous shot I went for what I assumed would be the average (middle disk of the three, holes open), I think maybe the first disk with the holes open (or partially open) would have probably given a subtle but perceptible glow. By all accounts the Imagon is tricky to master - I guess that means it behaves differently depending on the circumstances. I'm enjoying it already!

There are different thoughts being discussed but my belief is you should go ahead and process it to look like your pre-visualization that you would print for. There's nothing sacred about these images that we shouldn't show what our vision for the image is and was.

Soft focus lives in the highlights. That's why this is such a good choice. All the bright whites and accompanying halo's are what soft focus is about.

These are lovely Peter. Especially all the nice detail in the second one with the foreground rocks. I've done a few moving water in soft focus myself, but water on top of the ground is hard to find in Nevada :~'))

You sure have a fine collection of automobiles around the place.

Did you use the 'strainers' or the iris on the shutter (if it has one) for that shot, and at what f-stop? I still get a tremendous amount of 'glow' around anything bright white but you've got it pretty well tamed. Subtle is far better I think.

I used the 5.8 - 7.7 strainer (the only one I have, WANTED: the others) at 5.8. At 7.7 the softness and glow are almost gone.

Is your Imagon in shutter or barrel? I have all three strainers for the 300mm in barrel and could give you precise details and/or scans if you wanted to try to recreate them - an opening mechanism would be tricky but you could do plates with the centre aperture, and ones with centre aperture + strainer holes. If it's in shutter with a front thread as a starting point you may be able to find cheap UV filters that have a removeable retaining ring (to remove the glass).

I work in a high school and have borrowed a very simple single meniscus from the science dept, mounting it using the same sort of filter ring, fitted to a HiTech filter adapter plate then taped to a Sinar board. It works out to be about a 380mm/f7.6 but this was closer and probably about f10. I still have a bit of a problem focussing and (due to closeness as well) a good deal of this is probably plain out of focus rather than soft focus. Not sure if the marks on the expired Rollei Ortho 25 are due to dev or the result of the film sticking slightly to the separating paper in the box (which it was).

13-Aug-2018, 07:32
Peter, you are off to a good start with the soft focus work! The emphasis on shapes and tones for composition are more important than the lens choice. I like the first waterfall photo and your latest above. Determining which iris choice you want will come with experience. There is no definite best point of focus with SF. It's a gradual subjective choice.

Peter, my pic was on 6.5X8.5 ~ full plate. I cut my own film for the holders.

As to focus, I always tell people starting out to roll all the way through focus and out the other side, then come back slow watching straight lines with contrast. You'll see them get sharp long before the best "compromise" with focus and softness. In this case the white letters were my focus point with a tiny bit of back swing since I wasn't looking straight on and a bit of tilt to sacrifice the top of the picture in order to have more focus on the license plate. At this point, all quite mechanical and not really thought much about while I'm doing it.

Peter, my pic was on 6.5X8.5 ~ full plate. I cut my own film for the holders.

I was wondering if the lens length vs film size was having an effect on the amount of glow you were getting, but 6.5X8.5 is close enough to 5x7 to rule that out...

2 new ones from yesterday. But the lens is very unusual. Schneider Symmar. Yup. I had a 210 Symmar S MC with front light going all to pieces. So I took the front doublet out, took the rear lens off, and what is left is a 11" - ish meniscus that you can simply watch the glow coming off the highlights and adjust for the amount you want with aperture. It works better stopped down a little. So, if you can't afford a Kalosat or a Struss, use your Symmar!

Jac, the '38 Ford is incredibly modern for me. Compared to those 2 stupid Model A's. Roll up windows! Soft comfy seat. And smoooooooooooooooth V8 power. Wish it was a '39. Then I could add hydraulic brakes to the list. But if wishes were horses . . .

Couple more pics done with the Symmar. Anyone want to give me a lot of money for that lens??

I'll admit to being, perhaps, the Slow One in the group. But if you haven't already seen them, Guttenburg.org (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=Pictorial+Photography) has three electronic books from 1920 to 1922 that were originally produced by Clarence H. White. At the end of the books are advertisements for various soft focus lenses. It's interesting, to me at least, to have a look at what kinds of lenses were trying to be sold to pictorialists of the time.

These are done with the front light out of a CineTel telephoto cine lens. Lens was 300mm but front light by itself is about 16" I believe. The front group is a fine achromatic meniscus doublet. It's film days (35mm film) were over. So re-purposed as a soft focus lens.

I have several Bamboo species in my back yard. My favorite is Black Bamboo. They are beautiful as older they get . The canes will look Ebony black color. Their roots are running habit so be careful where you want to put them.
The Japanese landscapers loves the black bamboo and they are quite expensive especially in a bigger canes (1 to 2 inches in diameter ). I highly recommended for your garden accent. Enjoy gardening.

After years of 4x5 and 5x7, I'm new to 8x10 and this Wollensak Veritar 14" f/6 lens. First shots with it were in a dark room and weren't just soft, they were out of focus. I need to practice with more light available. This is the first successful shot: f/11 (still a good amount of softness), Intrepid 8x10 mkII, a bit of swing in the front standard, natural light, Bergger Pancro 400 in Pyrocat HD.

Looks good, super soft, with this lens. Dark corners, not so ok which is what I get with the 240mm version of the Imagon on 8x10. I'm getting a 4x5 reducing back for the Intrepid 8x10, but 5x7 really is my favorite format for size, aspect ratio and hauling convenience.
