I showed Reinhold how massive a difference there was in image softness between 5.6 and 8, so he offered to make me two intermediate stops. I went out shooting today using just the f6.6 stop in the 190mm Wollaston meniscus. Speed graphic, tiltall, 4x5 tmy2, pyrocat-HD. Shooting into the late afternoon sun.

David, the bold composition shapes (masses of light and dark) go well with soft lenses like that; keep it up! Dreamy, but original and not dreamy-cliche.

Thanks Jim! For a traditional Christmas card with outdoor trees, in Maine we need snow on the trees photographed. Otherwise it just says, "wrong season". Perhaps a recipient in Nevada would not be looking for or expecting snow.

6 inch lens, looks like f4, doublet up front and two at the rear with an air space, makes it a Petzval

David; Some would say the swirl is overdone, but if something's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. I like it.
The look reminds me of how entertained I was to look at the groundglass with someone's Jamin Cone Centralisateur was on the camera.
90398 shooting info same as above
I like the 2nd one much better; less contrast in the scene and less detail. I think it would be even better without the weed in the foreground that you've focused on, and to go for an abstract composition.

I like the first... it highlights the beautiful wildflower better....

4-Mar-2013, 09:35
The swirl is more than i expected, I'm not sure if that's a function of me taking it beyond it's expected coverage, or if there is anything I can do to tame it, it isn't cut for waterhouse stops (but was cheap) would that make a difference? I have some full length portraits and the swirl is diminished but still very obvious.
I kinda like it, but at the moment it's a one trick pony.
Steve M Hostetter
4-Mar-2013, 09:38
jp, image ,, thank you.. I shot large groups of these weeds tangled in old gnarly tree roots till I noticed this lone weed off to itself.. Wasn't sure till I looked through the GG so I had to go with it..
David, the easiest thing to do to reduce swirl is to simplify the background and have the person not wear checkered or gingham clothes. The plain dress you see does not have swirl because it's simple. I have a TLR (with a triplet lens) that swirls when trees are in the background and it's wide open. Different background, different results. It's probably very desirable as a one-trick pony swirl machine. If it's indeed not valuable, you could cut a slot and add stops.
David Higgs
4-Mar-2013, 10:30
cheers jp, I admit to choosing this background in the woods to get an idea of how swirly it is, will experiment with it some more
My TLR has the same effect - though not as obvious, and an old schneider xenar LF lens I have does the same

David, I agree with jp. Your photo could be a textbook example of the effect, which I cannot even name.
One of the things I like about pictorial photography of old was when you put less emphasis on the detail, you can put more emphasis on shapes and areas of light and dark; underlying items of importance often lost in the details otherwise. Generally, think how well it worked for hollywood portraits of old. Specifically, William Post did a nice job with winter pictorial photography. Stieglitz did great with wintry shapes in NYC, but there is more opportunity out of the city had he been adventurous in the winter.

nope, its that sharp in middle when wide open - i measured it with tape - was at 22" as i was shooting, so i just figured its about 7.1 (3" diameter of lens). Front mounted packard.
SergeiR
28-Apr-2013, 18:41
Remeasured it today, focused on wee object about 500-600 yards away, which is about safe for "infinity" imho. Its still 22", thats why i kept thinking that final length of #4 is 18 and not 13. Interesting. I guess reason behind it - barrel is long enough and focal measured at iris point, when it was with both elements. With single element and iris right behind it - i am measuring pretty much at the front lens and not in iris point (which is indeed would be about 18-19 with original barrel).
SergeiR, that's a cool photo. I'd venture a bet it would make a nice toned cyanotype or van dyke print if you ever get into alt process stuff.

I consider it a practice shot. I may go back another time and light the foreground so the body of the excavator fades into some sinister shadow. Or I might get the owner to pose with it if our schedules can align. It could make a nice toned cyanotype contact print if I make it into more of a story. I don't mind if this excavator gets left in my yard for a while to let me try some shots.

I am really starting to love this style!
Can anyone help out a newbie and give some advice on 'how-to'? Also, it seems some subjects have more potential than others... Any suggestions?
I'm mostly shooting a 4x5 monorail with a variety of lenses...
(edit: I think the first few pages of this thread covers a lot of info re: lenses, I'm asking more about your process.
I.e. do u twist the lens standard as much as possible, then focus and shoot wide open?
Or do u focus then twist the film plane?
What is it about a scene that says to u 'this would make a nice subject for the 'galli style'?
Thanks!)
I favor subjects with big areas of bright and dark, basic shapes, (like car closeups). It's not hard and fast though. Woods I like too. Things I can make into really simple photos.
If you are using a monorail, you probably want something with a shutter. Galli sells those, or you could find an imagon or kodak portrait 305 with shutters.
http://www.amazon.com/After-Photo-Secession-Pictorial-Photography-1910-1955/dp/0393041115 is my favorite book on the subject, but there are many secession era books that are quite engaging.

Thanks for the book suggestion! I'll check it out
Do you use any movements - or just shoot wide open with a soft lens?
I finally got my 6" petzval f/4 (I think) mounted to a board for my speed graphic - I hope to play with it soon
Speed graphic is very handy for soft lenses; most of the old ones don't have a shutter, but the speed graphic does. It's mostly what I use. No movements. Rarely wide open, as aperture controls softness, so some adjustment of softness is usually called for.
RussHerm

thanks jp498 - I took a few shots last weekend without movements (not that the speed has many movements) - but was really blown away by what I found on the ground glass. I was hoping for swirl :)
it will take a few shoots to get a better handle on this lens...

5" Projection Petzval, Chamonix 45n1, FP4, front mounted packard (!)
These negs were among a set that was misplaced since '09.
I had a request for some prints a few months ago and turned the studio upside down with no success.
Later when looking in the files for another purpose, there they were, as it often seems to go.
Wow, I absolutely love these! I must figure out how t mount one of my projection Petzvals on my 5x7.

And finally... Same place, same day, different scene.
N.B. See how much smoother this photo is than the previous? It's because it doesn't have a complex details / detailed background. That detailed background and grass with the biplane doesn't help the photo. Generally avoid complex backgrounds with soft focus. You are looking to portray soft and simple not high detail.
The SF lenses have a fatter depth of field than a sharp lens. The only thing I could do next time is move up to 8x10 to get a thinner DOF with the bi-plane. Going wide-open might make it too fuzzy. I get a thinner DOF with the car interior here because it's a closer photo and closer distances have thinner DOF, meaning it's much more guaranteed to be thrown out of focus. A normal 8.75" lens would not allow someone to get a whole car interior in focus like this at f5.6ish without serious movements I didn't use because my speed graphic doesn't have them.

Drove the late '31 Coupe down to Goldfield on Saturday.
Bitter ~ Sweet because 25 years ago I drove here in my then '29 Roadster, and Henry Dahlstrom was still alive. He came out and listened to the 'A' motor, and though it was a smoker, he said if it was him, he'd just pour oil in when it needs it because it sounded very healthy. Which is what I did. That was the car my kids grew up with. Those memories are what caused them to encourage me to get another Model A for the 6 grandsons to enjoy. So I got 2.

I've been saying for years I'd like a Model A. My dad had a model T in the 50s in Florida that they stripped down to almost nothing. They called them 'skeeters' like mosquitoes if I recall. And there was a very early model T truck in a barn on my mom's side that we played in back in the 70s, that had been there for decades. Nice shot and car.

I messed around with my old Kodak Brownie today by taping a sheet of film at the film plane. The film is blue sensitive, and therefore the sky and specular highlights are blown. I'm still trying to find a development scheme that will tame it. Next to try is stand development.

If you want to tame it, go out just after sunset when the east/north sky is not bright and shade is everywhere. But then you probably don't have much shutter speed flexibility with that camera.

That's a good idea. This was already a 6 sec. exposure, so there is some flexibility in that regard. I was really curious to see how the Brownie photographed so I just went out in the backyard as soon as I loaded the film. Once I reload I will be more judicious about time and place. :)

Thanks. I knew from experience that this film does not suffer open skies gladly, but as I said above I just couldn't wait to try out the camera. If I do have midday skies in the image again I will try stand development to see if I can't keep them from blowing out entirely.

I don't think this is an old "station," my recollection is that it was a house. If you're there again walk across the road to the general store and ask the store owners the story behind it. If I could remember enough details I'd relate them but I don't, it's been quite a while since I talked with them. All I remember is that the story behind it was very interesting, involving fires, murders, that kind of thing. In any event, regardless of what it was the photograph is beautiful.

Hey Jim. Thanks for asking. It was from one of those Mirroscope things that's supposed to shine a postcard onto the wall. Mounted the lens in a piece of ABS plastic, a 3" male adapter, and cobbled it onto a lens board. Basically a 1F99 except more expensive.

That's part of the challenge when working with cars; dealing with reflections. Reflections can be unwanted or can be good; it's up to the photographer.
I also have to wait till the background is clear; a person standing in the wrong spot can still mess up the background even with thin DOF LF stuff.

I like this a lot. What does reversing the rearmost element do? Increase the aberrations and softness?

Yes. If you reverse both elements it gets softer. Reverse just the rearmost and it gets both softer and the edge distortion goes wild.
So with this lens, which covers 4x5/5x7 easily, the petzval design keeps only the very centermost point in sharp focus and everything else very quickly goes first into softness and then soon after that into big time aberrations -- everything streaking away from the center.

This is the front half of a projection lens I found in the bottom of a box, delaminated and separated, but "what the heck", I taped it to an Ilex shutter and tried it anyway.

You're noticing the big shapes of black and chrome/white. Shapes and composition are the most ignored part of learning soft focus work. Keep it up!

Sweet! Clean the old balsum gunk off with acetone and then put the glasses back together with a drop of Wesson Oil. Also Galli style. Although I can't imagine a better image than you've already got.

Thanks for the kind words! I'll try out acetone on a rough old lens I have, literally rough!
Front lens is lumpy with a brown transparent cracked film - balsam I guess? Methylated spirits didn't budge it, so I put it aside for a rainy day.

Bravo! I've also recognized these early - ish wide angle anastigmat's as good potential fodder for re-purposing as cheap, and wide, soft foci lens possibilities. Some of the earliest ones, you just pop the aperture out and whee.
More old cars with soft lenses. A win-win combination. As I've done before with other car photos, this is a party of circles. You've got the round spat, the wheel/tire behind it, the reflected wheel/tire, the glowing lock above the reflected wheel/tire, and the curvy haunch of the car. Black and chrome and soft focus glow work nicely together too. The main car is an Xk140. The reflected car is my own, an XKE with replica dunlop alloy wheels.

Ralph Stein in his wonderful book of antique cars relayed the story that when these cars were new, in the Hamptons 100 years ago, the dapper youth would taunt each other thus;
Stutz Bearcat driver; "there's nothing worser than a Mercer" to which the Mercer driver would return; "ya gotta be nuts to drive a stutz.
Stein was there. He was quite old in 1963 when he published his book. I was quite young when my mother bought it for me for Christmas. It's getting to be quite a span. The cars were 50 years old when Stein published the book I have. Now they're 100!
