Post your sculpture!

After a quick search, it seems there are few – if any – “Post your sculpture” threads.

Heck, I thought, why not start one and see what happens…

(I’d especially like to see if anyone has captured white marble with fine effect.)

Here are two shots of Alexander Calder’s “Eagle” – which until recently perched here, in front of Seattle’s Asian Art Museum. It has since flown to Olympic Sculpture Park, just north of the city’s downtown district on the edge of Puget Sound. (Anyone have a shot at its new location?)

Calder’s work always menaced me – with its scimitar edges, sharp points, and sanguinary red iron :eek: . But it fascinates me too; each different viewpoint brings a protean change :rolleyes: . (Perhaps the two photos show this – taken only feet apart!) As the 2nd photo shows, Seattle’s late afternoon sun would throw dramatic shadows onto the museum.

In each case, I tilted-up the camera bed, returned the back to vertical, and added slight front rise:

sweet! Funny you should start this thread, there is a big art sculpture thing being erected here in Culver City, I just went down and took a 4x5 of it 3 days ago, when I develop it and scan it, I'll post it up here :-)

I look forward to seeing everyone's images, I really enjoy these types of threads!

Here's the Weeping Angel (I think it's white marble, can't get close to it to tell) on Stanford University campus, near the Stanford family mausoleum. It's a memorial to the parents of Mrs. Stanford:

The actual mausoleum has two sphinxes on the front, which are in white marble, here's one's portrait "Sphinx with nosejob":

And in the rear of the mausoleum, are two gynosphinxes in granite. Here's one, and the streaks are one of the many reasons I got fed up with Type 55 before it was discontinued:

This is from North Montpelier, VT. The two sculptures sit in front of a dilapidated apartment house that looks like it might blow away with the next storm...and if it doesn't the neighbors will probably do something to see that it does the next time.

And here’s a thirsty camel resting in late-afternoon sun in front of Seattle’s Asian Art Museum.

Hmmm … is that a photographer’s unwanted shadow on the left? :confused:

Here’s the story…

I selected my camera position to place the camel’s chin in-between the shadow of his neck and hump.

Since it took time to set-up and compose the shot, I anticipated the shadow’s movement, working a little ahead of it. And to help keep the wall’s horizontal mason lines straight, I swung my camera back to be parallel with the wall. (This also kept the front of the statue’s base straight.) I let my small f/32 aperture take care of DOF.

As I completed my set-up, the camel’s chin moved into the desired position.

I snapped the shot – with all the satisfaction that accompanies artistic effort.

“Perfect!” I thought – from start to finish.

That’s when I noticed my own shadow had tip-toed into the scene!
