Back around 1970 I bought a new SINAR Symmar 360/5.6 for my Norma. It's in a compound shutter that, even though recently CLA, still suffers from shutter speed performance issues but is consistent and useable but is also a pia. I'm wondering if there is a possibility of changing to another shutter - preferably Copal. After reading some of Steve Simmons' book on View Cameras, it sounds like I may be faced with a need for a machinist who knows about this stuff. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

To Squeeeeeze the 360 Symmar into a Copal 3 it became an f6.8 lens instead of an f5.6 lens. Plus it also transitioned to the Symmar - S at about the same time. You'd be far better off selling the sticky one for what you can get and replacing it with a used Symmar -S in the Copal shutter from the factory. O/wise you'll be spending lots of $$$ on a lens that isn't worth what the conversion will cost.

Keep in mind, that due to size and weight, 360 Symmar-S lenses go for very little money these days as well, often less than the cost of a bare Copal 3. (makes no sense to me either)

I have a 360/5.6 Symmar in a Compur 5FS electromagnetic shutter...
But this does not help your problem since a Compound #5 is probably easier to fix than a defective Compur 5FS !

Sounds like I've got some looking to do. Very belated thanks to all for the comments.

I've got a Sinar lensboard (that I don't need) with iris and some "squeeze/pull" adjust thing for iris control. This is for the Symmar 360 in Compound #5 shutter. Send a PM if interested.

I have a set of orphaned 360mm Symmar cells which I won on Ebay about 3 years ago, I was hoping a Compound #5 would turn up at a reasonable price but no luck yet, a 360mm Symmar-S would not suit my purpose as it doesn't convert to 620mm anyway I am in no hurry as I am covered for these focal lengths more or less with my Cooke triple convertables, just wanted to try something different.

Good luck.

Tony, who says the -s doesn't convert? have you tried it, you may be surprised.

Hi Erie
Thanks for the info:) I'll give it a try with my 240mm Symmar-S.

I think you need a bit more popular Compound IV 10/2. Please take a look at:

Jakub is right, The shutter is the same as the 240/4.5 Xenar. The Compound #5 is used for the 300/4.5 Xenar, but none of the Symmars. You will need the 4-10/2 as the 4-9 has smaller cell thread sizes (approx 68mm for 4-10/2, approx 62mm for 4-9).

It is more common to find the 240 Xenar in a barrel mount but they do turn up from time to time in shutters. I got one 18 months ago for $112, I guess that would probably make it economic to swap.

If you find a 240 Xenar in a Compound shutter, you may want to forget about the 360. I have a late one that is one of my favorite lenses on 8x10, so sharp and contrasty. And, the sound of that Compound is pure music to my ears. I know Schneider says 282mm image circle at f/16, but who shoots 8x10 landscapes at f/16?
