Hello,

many of you have visited my web site "Megaperls" in the past and it has become well known around the web over the last four years. We thought it is time to change things a little to make it even more interesting so we changed our name to Japan Exposures - A personal introduction to Japanese photography.

http://www.japanexposures.com

On the front page we produce various content related to Japanese photography, such as reviews of books, gallery shows and profiles/interviews of photographers we know, general articles and essays, but we will also feature photo products and other things such as "legends of the past" where for example we look at the products advertised in Japanese photo magazines from 20-30 years ago and what became of them. We are also hand-picking cover photos by relatively unknown photographers with a visual language that we think may be of interest in the rest of the world. For example we are currently featuring large format photographer Shintaro Sato's Twilight Zone, Tokyo cityscapes shot from emergency staircases. There is a also a weblog with our own day to day postings about being a practicing photographer in Japan.

The web shop you may already be familiar with has been complemented with a book store.

We hope that the site enables us to share some of the excitement we experience as photographers in Japan with the rest of the world and we look forward to your visit, comments and feedback!

Dirk

Well done. Good luck with it.

One suggestion: It might be preferable to keep the store separate, with its own name, and link back and forth between the two sites. This might increase the potential traffic at both sites. Of course, I have been wrong before, and this might be boneheaded, but if I was looking for a store, and found this nice site, I might not browse around long enough to find the store.

Nice site, I cross posted this over at my site as well.

BTW, any idea when Fuji Fortia will be available again?

Thanks,

Seems like a lot of words, not many images.

Nice update. Any chance you could enlighten me (us?) about Fuji Quickchange for large format?

Ciao!

Thanks for looking!

There are many pros and cons for this. My personal taste is to have everything integrated and let visitors stay on a single site. We will ensure a lot of cross-references between the content and shop parts and measure with Analytics, so let's see. I will be happy if people like the non-store part and keep coming back for that, at some point they should "discover " the store :)

Thank you for the link (although your forum section is not working right now due to a license issue).

As for Fuji Fortia it is traditionally a cherry blossom film so let's keep fingers crossed that it will be back in spring!

Seems like a lot of words, not many images.

We are just starting out and there will be more to come. We are producing the content as we speak and are busy lining it up for you. Mind you though that you can find images anywhere on the web if you look for it, but one of our aims is to provide the context within which certain images are made and then illustrate with a few samples. This is usually the hard part for non-Japanese speakers. We will provide links to the artists' site with more images, but we are also discovering that many of them do not have a gallery showcase online (some have not even email!) so there is possibly another gap for us to fill. Thanks for pointing that out though. In the meantime have a look at Shintaro Sato's full set of 4x5 cityscape photos here (http://shinsato.cool.ne.jp/twilight%20s%20english.htm), they are absolutely superb (shot on Fuji colour negative BTW).

Funny you mention this as my to-do list contains an item around just that, to write an article around the QC system and perhaps post an illustrative video on its workings. Note though that it is no longer made and very hard to obtain cartridges these days.

We are open to other suggestions for content, your own contribution to the site or even products. I was planning to approach Fujifilm for a custom run of sheet film, like Velvia 50 or Acros in 5x7 or WP format. Please think about whether something like this would interest you and contact us.

Cheers

Dirk

It is up now, the licensing server is in the UK, and I occasionally have issues with it. The next version of the software is supposed to remove it.

Hi Dirk,

This site sounds great. I hope to contribute somehow.

Maybe we can meet in December when I get back to Tokyo. We have several projects underway with and in Japan.

Warmly,
Tsuyoshi
