Hello to all from beautiful Fresno -

Lecture by John Sexton

When: Thursday, October 23rd, 2008, at 7:00 pm

Where: Fresno Art Museum’s Bonner Auditorium, 2233 N. First St., Fresno, Ca.

Spectrum Art Gallery is hosting John Sexton for an educational, informative, and entertaining audio-visual presentation, as he shares his images and insights covering his more than 30-year photographic career.
Known for his elegant, finely crafted, large format black and white photographs, Sexton prefers to photograph the quiet message of the natural environment. This all-new presentation will include many images from John’s most recent book, Recollections: Three Decades of Photographs.
The talk will also include examples and anecdotes drawn from his six-year close working relationship with Ansel Adams as Adams’ Photographic and Technical Assistant, and later as his consultant. Images by both Sexton and Adams will be transformed on the screen from the negative to the final print, progressing through the various creative steps in the evolution of an expressive photographic print. . I saw him in Santa Barbara a couple of years ago. His talk was very entertaining and his photography was stellar. If Fresno were a bit closer, I would go again.

Terry, thanks for the reminder.

For those unfamiliar with the annual Spectrum Gallery Auction, be sure to check out their online catalog. As in the past, some very fine work is available this year.

Merg,

Thanks for underlining that this is the lead in to our
annual Print Auction.

The Sexton talk is Thursday night.

The print auction is Saturday night.

check out

for info on the talk and auction.

If you are coming from out of town for the auction, I'd suggest
calling the gallery, or sending me an email, to arrange for tickets.

The Bonner Auditorium is an excellent venue, but it seats 150 - as of
last weekend we had 80 tickets sold.

Hope to see some of you there.

Hi John, was it well attended? What were the high points of the lecture, did you leave inspired to be out at dawn with your camera? Just curious, I have never attended a lecture by a photographer.

I got to hear him for 4+ in Winnemucca a couple of years ago. He had a great slide show and talked about how he works. Inspirational indeed.

Hi John, was it well attended? What were the high points of the lecture, did you leave inspired to be out at dawn with your camera? Just curious, I have never attended a lecture by a photographer.

The auditorium was near capacity and John's theme was "Inspiration"...and it certainly was! The slide presentation was a mix of topics ranging from the humorous to the jaw droppingly beautiful. John talked about his mentors in High School and Cypress College and Ansel Adams and Brett Weston and the Ansel Adams workshops.

John also showed "straight" images of several famous photographs and then how they looked after being dodged and burned to become the icons we have seen in books and magazines.

Absolutely fantastic! Lots of laughter, plenty of wonderful stories and great images! It was very inspiring and Spectrum Gallery certainly did the community a service by bringing John Sexton here to speak.

BTW, I learned that this is the first of a series of presentations by visiting photographers (cool!) and The Fresno Art Museum auditorium is a splendid venue for it.

It sure inspired me!

Thanks to all for the comments - it went wonderfully!

Attendance was around 130 by my totally arbitrary rough count.

John was certainly "on his game" as usual. The audience was
very responsive.

This was the opening event for Spectrum Gallery's annual fund
raising auction. The turnout bodes well for our main event -
the auction - this Saturday night.

It was also nice that the venue - the Fresno Art Center ( would would
have been hard pressed to fit that many people in the Gallery space )
-had a group exhibit up that included a lot of photography.

We will post more information on upcomming speakers that are going
to be part of the ongoing program.

Thanks to all that attended.
