Ronar in Compound Shutter: Is it coated?

Hi all,

I've been offered an apo ronar 19 inch lens in a compound shutter, was wondering if coating was in use at the time they used compound shutters or not. The serial number is 567xxxx. Thanks

At least all lenses from the beginning of the fifties are coated. And Compound shutters where buildt up to the end of the sixties.

Thanks Peter, according to the sn, the lens at least is from 1961. I mean to use it for 8x10 contacts, anyone care to comment on coverage and price vs. a similar artar? Thanks.

The Apo-Ronar 480mm has an image-circle of 396mm at infinity and f/22 and an angle of view of 46°. So there is some movement possible with 8x10 and it's 312mm.

My understanding is that the Ronar lenses installed in shutters at the factory are multicoated. I had a 300mm that was really sharp, wish I still had it.

But not in the early sixties. Multicoating isn't an issue with a lens with only a few air-lens surfaces like the Apo-Ronar. This lens is a realy "sharp" one.

I respectfully disagree with your statement Peter, the Ronar has more air to air to air surfaces than any other lens (8) and need coating more so than other lens designs.

Any other lens? Most Rodenstock LF lenses have also eight glass-air surfaces. But multicoating compared with single-coating is only an issue with much more glass-air surfaces.
