i recently bought a B&J wooden field camera and i was just curious as to what film back i needed to use

the ground glass is mounted on a thing that looks like a picture frame and i can take it toatally off the camera to turn it horizontal or verticle. So the question is what film back should i use for this camera?

You mean to ask what size film holder. Measure the size of the ground glass and you will know. The film holder goes between the framed ground glass and the rest of the back, pressed by springs. I recommend you read some basic instructions before you proceed further.

Post a picture so we can tell what kind of back you have. If it's a "Graflock", you can use all sorts of film holders and backs with it.

Unless someone has replaced it, on a wooden Burke and James view camera its a spring back...the only question will be size; measure the ground glass and get appropriate sheet film holders, grafmatic holders, or, if 4x5, a Calumet roll film holder which will use 120 film for 6x7 or 6x9 negatives (I think they may have made them for 6x6 and 6x12, too). That pretty much covers the options.

The camera already has a back. You need film holders.

What are the measurements of the ground glass? That should tell you if you need 4x5, 5x7, or 8x10 holders.
