I am more into landscape than into architecture, but I have photographed a few churches in Denmark. They are part of the landscape there, somehow. And I find the Danish-style churches look very friendly. Three pictures:

The Bogense (Fyn) church. Wista DX with Rodenstock APO-Ronar 150mm, TMAX 100 with +1 overexposure and N-1 development in D-76. In the print you can read the inscripts on the tombstones (thanks to large format).
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/sample/000390-pu-bogense-kirke.jpg

The Raabjerg church near Skagen (Jutland). Linhof IV with Rodenstock Grandagon 90mm, TMAX 100 with +1 overexposure and N-1 development in XTOL
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/sample/000486-pu-raabjerg-kirke.jpg

Den tilsandende Kirke in Skagen (Jutland). The church has been abandoned long ago when it was covered by the sand dunes, only the tower remains. It is a popular tourist attraction today. Polaroid 110B Razzle conversion, Rodenstock Ysarex 127mm, shot with the f90 cap on TMAX 400, push development to 3200 in XTOL. With the f90 cap you can get everything sharp from 4ft to infinity. Handheld shot, lying on my back in the wet grass...

Was there fog or is this all due to your processing of the negative and the printing?
Is this the scan of a print or a negative?

This portfiolio about Italy is the one that is causing more pain since it is not finished and I have been applying for grants without any positive results.

Unfortunately foundations now funds mainly projects of social relevance whatever that means and artists whose creative juices are somewhere else are regularly being said I am sorry, blah blah blah....

This is an old one, my love hate relationship with the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.
I asked them to raise the two spheres seen in the upper section of the picture. Not a problem I was told, will you write a cheque or use a credit card for the 1000.00 fee!!!!!
They are on an electric hoist!
They once charged me 250 dollars for 15 minutes on their roof to take a picture of the square that faces the church.

Hello Don,,

Thank you... I over-exposed so I had to mess with the brightness and contrast some.

When I print conventional I'll have to use a red filter I suppose.. When I go back I'll have some efke 25 and the exposure I used will be closer ,,,, very difficult lighting to meter "for me" I was scared to move around to much in that place..

17-Dec-2008, 01:48
No demands from my side, but it would be interesting to see how LF can show a living church rather than just a piece of heritage. I get the same inconsequential guilt when I chill out to renaissance polyphony (http://dw.com.com/redir?&destUrl=http%3a%2f%2fmusic-files.download.com%2fsd%2f3HDkoagNpR7g3RmjFnTW41H-IoesMZwIh3srtXIL_i_HtpsrKpfj_BZ7HHfXe2k9VbWgIuE2Sgtld3IgYv2o6zZGUFmyZMr1%2fmp3download%2f100424572%2f192%2fVirtual_Byrd_Choir-Mass_for_Five_Voices_--_1._Kyrie.mp3&edId=3&siteId=32&oId=3600-8171_32-100400135&ontId=8171&lop=btn&tag=btn&ltype=dl_192k&astId=2&pid=100424572&mfgId=100400135&merId=100400135): it's completely against the original intent of the creators, and yet 'normal'.

Some blurring of moving people can be expected. :)

Blurred crowds processing around the Kaba in Mecca seem to have become an annual photographic cliché in our local press. I'm sure the other people of the book can come up with something equally expressive if they try :-)

Wonderful and inspirational photos here guys.

I'm working on a series of historic rural or formerly rural churches here in NZ at the moment. Researching just where they all are in itself is such a lengthy process, yet alone getting to them.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I see what you mean about the light. It does seem to match these little, understated churches quite nicely. I really want to do as many of these justice as possible. They are wonderful little buildings, and sum up so much of this countries short history, but who knows how long they'll be around for.

My experiance with b&w film doesn't span very far, not quite a year.. I print very few images and I have just basic knowlege of what a good negative is supposed to look like.. Nothing worse then trying to appraise an image with a non-working program ,scanner..
The PC loaded with scanwizard pro seems to work much better... Not a drum scan by any means but at least they show correct exposure and my whites really are white

I too experienced a Revelation: moving from a 35mm only scanner and yucky software to an ancient but useful large format Epson scanner and Epson Scan software. I also discovered that I had a few decent 6x6 and 6x7 negatives to work with. My 4x5 negatives are improving slowly.

Indeed. It's all uphill from here!

Allen,

Beautiful shot!! There appears to be a considerable amount of rise. Any idea how much rise? What film size? Did you crop the lower portion of the neg? It "looks like" 6x12cm with a little fall-off in the lower corners but I didn't know the 58 SA XL has that much wiggle room. Did you use a center filter?

Thank you Gents!
It was a lot of fun, I had to shoot the new Dean of the school, back in 1993 so I dragged the view camera along and shot a few frames of the chapel before the Dean arrived.

Mike,
I did not note the rise, I do remember it was almost the Max I could get out of it without loosing the corners. It is 4x5, full frame on the long side but about a half inch is cropped from each side on the width.

I don't honestly know how much it will give it real time measures, but I can set it up and measure it out if you would like to know. I picked that lens up solely on the recommendation of a former LFPF member, he is a brilliant photographer whose work I deeply admire, he made a case for 58/75/120 or 135 combo (he actually favored the 135, but I went with the 120 S Symmar ) combo over the 65/90/150 I was using at the time, he was right (as he always is), it has proven to be a good set for my needs.

Mike1234
11-Oct-2009, 18:55
Allen,

I greatly appreciate your offer but there's no need to set up and measure for me. I actually have one but I haven't used it yet. In know this may seem strange but I bought all the lenses I want before buying the cameras. I'll be shooting just two formats one of which is 6x12cm. The lens combination I opted for this setup is 38/58/90/135/200/300. It looks like Schneider's image circle specs are very conservative given the amount of rise it looks like you used. Hmm... it makes my wonder if the 38 will cover 4x5 straight on?!? :)

Again... beautiful image!!

My guess after drawing some lines and a short "back of envelope calculation": about 1.4cm of rise (a bit more than half an inch).

How I got there: I'm assuming the camera was set up straight (quite likely with large format) and the standpoint was centered in the room (according to the lines of the tiles I'd say it was - it's not strictly necessary for this game, but it makes it easier). I draw in some of the perspective lines over the picture (good that I'm doing that digitally and not on a print...). They meet in the perspective center of the image. The horizontal line where they meet is the level of the camera. I get a point a little bit under the plaque on the wall.

Now, given the information above (no cropping of the longer side), I draw a big X over the image, from corner to corner. This gives me the center of the film. It's a litle bit below the hindmost arch, a tiny bit on the lower border of that lighter spot on the wall.

Those two points are 114 pixels apart. The height of the digital image I have is 1056 pixels. 5 inches are about 127mm. If 1056pixels = 127mm, then 114pixels = 13.7mm or 1.37cm (a bit more than half an inch). I rounded :-). It's all not really exact anyway, as all the game is in the following of the perspective lines.

Apart from that: I really like the atmosphere in that picture!

Jim,

That is a beauty.
I swore I would never suggest another crop again after offending someone,....
but here goes. :)

Have you printed it without the little strip of grass on the bottom right?
I find the eye is draw to the window first, and then it rolls around the image clockwise until it hits that strip. That acts as a period and my eye stops, I have to force it to go over again and I jump straight to the window. But when I roll it out of the browser window, my eye makes a full circle and ends on the window again.
Just a suggestion, was that the effect you were looking for?
I see the strip of grass helps give the third dimension feel and the separation of planes of the walls, which may be reduced without it.
You can throw a cyber egg at me if you wish. :)
I only stick my neck again because it is a really nice picture.

Jim,

I printed the two out and left them on the table as I had coffee this morning, you are right, with a bit of time looking at the picture, I do like it more as is. The tension it creates really does balance the image and becomes "softer" with a bit of time.

This was a scene that caught my attention as I drove by while I was in hot pursuit of another shot I had in mind, but I kept driving for several miles past it before turning around to go back. As it was the timing was perfect with the alignment of the cloud bank behind the church. A couple of shots taken within minutes of the shot shown here, and where the clouds had moved off to the right, didn't have near the impact.

This is my first church interior using T-Max 100 roll film in 6x12 back. Schneider 150mm on the 4x5. My exposure on this was too dark, so I had to lighten it. I was using the 6x12 to first get use to using the camera before I went to full sheet.

Church in Rethwisch - parts of it were built in the 14th century.

I made some mistakes (got ugly marks near the border probably by bending the negatives in the loading-unloading-process too much) but overall I'm quite happy with this shot.
I will re-shoot this scene in a month or so and will compensate for converging verticals a bit more - I was afraid to get a too much „stretched“ look this time.

This is Tumacacori Mission and Tumacacori National Historic Park just south of Tuscon, Arizona. This mission is photographed a lot You may have seen it on this forum before. For many years, I used an 8 X 10 Deardorff. I eventually sold the camera, sold a used BMW car and a few other miscellaneous photographic odds and ends before I got enough money to buy an 8 X 10 Arca Swiss. This was was my first shoot using the new camera.

I made this picture in 2007 with a Schneider 150 XL lens. I used HP5 film and tray developed it in PMK Pyro. Thanks for looking.

Makeshift Prayer Shack (abandoned) between Burned Trees

There is a little church up the hill, but since old people can't hike up there, the church people erected this makeshift prayer shack. Now that the hills burned down, it's abandoned.

Little Shasta Church, in very northern California. 90 mm with as much front rise as I could get, followed by a little digital perspective correction. Orange filter.

The setting of this church is inhcredible. Mount Shasta is about 15 miles away, and very beautiful this time of year. In the photo it would be just to the left of the church, if not covered by clouds. I'm not sure I would shoot both the mountain and the church together, as I think it would detract from both. It is an awesome sight to just look at when both are visible, though.

Old Webster Church, Dexter, Michigan. The oldest continuously used church in Washtenaw County. Named for Daniel Webster, built in 1834. Sadly, the print image is better than the 4x5 scan appears on-screen. I was limited as to where I could shoot from, very low and close. I tried to get things vertical with movements, but obviously need more work in that department.:)

Thanks for the good memory. Maybe one day I'll return with my LF gear and take a shot of my own!

Monty-

Thanks. You may note that the church was recently renovated. They took off the whitewash and went back to the natural stone. From a photography standpoint it is a plus since the church will no longer blowout in the sunlight. They also put on a new roof and went back to the original accent paint. Interior was refinished and got a fresh coat of paint too. It really looks nice. They finished last month.
