Jesse, very nice images. On the earlier one, I presume you're using front rise as well as back tilt. Seems like a bit of light fall-off towards the top of the image. Or is it just cloud cover?

Thanks Doug, yes, I think there is light fall off due to this extra wide angle lens.

It'd been the best of a year since the Deardorff had an outing so I took it Lincoln cathedral between Christmas and New Year. After setting up the camera I realised that my spot meter was elsewhere but I had an incident meter in the bag. IIRC correctly, this was a 7 min exposure.

Wonderful perspective, really brings out the grandeur of the cathedral. But am I the only one puzzled by the two "Magen Davids" (Jewish stars) right in the middle of the image? Are they typically used as Christmas ornaments?

It's not unusual for a Christian church to display items from Jewish tradition. On the retable in my Lutheran church the candle holders are shaped to form the Hebrew words chesed and shalom.

Little private chapel near Box Elder, Texas. The roof is falling in so it won't last long. Statue actually marble from Italy. Shot off the top of 4-Runner with 120mm in front of 5X7. This is proof over the fixer tray with iphone. I expect I can prefog and get a little tone in sky if I decide to enlarge.

Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA. First Church of Christ.

Some of you might have a picture of it already-

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/08/Elvis_How_Great_Thou_art.jpg

The spire is leaning to one side, I tried to minimise the effect as much as I could. No digital geometric transformations here...

Extreme wide angle lenses have been discussed before, and I know that some people really don't like them but perhaps they have their place- particularly since this was the furthest position from the church in which the view wasn't obscured by branches and electricity cables.

Super Angulon 72mm, with CF. T55 neg scan.

Neil, beautiful shots - Few days ago I've read The Deans Watch by Elisabeth Groudge which I think is based around the Ely Cathedral - I've never been there (yet) but your images fit her description of this place well..

Thank you. I have been moved to make the last shot my desktop background :) (And I don't do religion, at all.)

I can thoroughly recommend a trip to see Ely Cathedral if you're in the UK - not only is it a beautiful example of thousand-year-old architecture, but they do a couple of tours which get you out onto the roof and into the bits you don't usually see.

Thanks, Barry.

Most churches at the parish level, where there is very little general visiting, don't care. If there is a member of the church staff there I will always ask - it's only polite - but I've never been refused.

For the larger cathedrals, many of which are also tourist destinations as well as places of worship, there is generally a small fee - a couple of pounds as a rule - requested, if a tripod is used. There may be one or two in which it is forbidden entirely, usually on obstruction and safety grounds. I don't know of any in particular, but I haven't been to them all!

It is vanishingly rare that I see another photographer with a tripod, and almost never that I see a large format photographer. I think the cathedrals maintain the charge from inertia rather than any particular need... at Ely, the charge was two pounds, but they waived it as my wife and I had just spent eighteen pounds on the Octagon Tower guided tour - recommended.

Neil

p.s. many of the cathedrals have websites and photography rules may be listed there. The main one is 'not during services'.

Neil, many thanks for your helpful reply. I love British church architecture and photography and would one day love to visit with my camera. I particularly love the work of Edwin Smith - his steps at Wells Cathedral for example. But there are many very fine photographs by others also. Until I can afford that holiday I'll have to be content with the work of others (and regular doses of Escape to The Country). :)

Love the detail on the front of the altar, Peter.

Barry - if you ever decide to hop on Qantas and visit these rainy isles be advised that the two best-known churches in London - St Paul's and Westminster - both prohibit internal photography. Which is a shame.

Thanks Neil, I can live with that. I know both places are breathtakingly beautiful, and to just see them would be enough for me. When you consider the breadth of architectural beauty in British churches I'm sure I'd find plenty to satisfy me.

I think with eleven hundred years to practice, they've just about got it right!

As I said earlier - I am in no way a religious person, but I have to admire the vision of people who can start a project knowing it is going to take a couple of hundred years to complete, to lavish their craftsmanship and skills on it to leave a thing of beauty that will last for centuries. Irrespective of the purpose of the buildings or the motives behind them, they have created wonders - in some cases improved on, or at least supplemented, by the work of later craftsmen. Discussing Ely Cathedral with the guide, there were at least two phases of building (replacing an existing church in the 11th and 12th century, and additions in the 15th) and a lot of upgrading in the 19th century.

So my picture shows a thousand years of workmanship. If only today's architects were so visionary, instead of slapping things together in thirty months and only expecting them to last thirty years.

Well said, Neil. I recently saw a documentary on St Paul's which used laser scanning to study the structural secrets used by Wren, specifically how he was able to get the huge dome supported. It revealed the secret - a load-bearing brick cone between the inner ceiling and the outer surface of the dome. Truly amazing and inspired design, and what makes many of these structures almost eternal. And as you say, we don't need to be religious to to appreciate them.

Merg, that tree really makes this image work. Well seen.

Thank you Dennis and Andrew.

A quick note on Acetone, Andrew. Acetone is an alkaline compound. When reacting with Sodium Sulfite it becomes an accelerator. For instance, in ABC Pyro it can replace the Sodium Carbonate, which in my experience can give a negative of less contrast. (I used to do dbi and watched for the shadow detail while holding the highlights).

If you tray process, as I always have, the Acetone vapor helps prevent oxidation. Oh, and the smell is wonderful; it takes me back seventy years to when I was a kid in my dad's darkroom!

Presently I use a Metol-Acetone formula for my sheet film. The stock solution, properly bottled, lasts one year --- just need to add Sulfite and water for use.

As always, a warning: undiluted Acetone is extremely flammable! I always do the mixing outdoors.

Boxgrove Parish Church, next to Boxgrove Priory. This church dates at least in part from the 12th century I finally got round to testing the Schneider 75m f5.6 Super Angulon I bought recently. It's really sharp and doesn't seem to have any distortion to speak of. It's a challenge to use in a dark environment like this, I could only see image in the corners of the ground glass by looking at them at an angle, and in this light I was guessing the framing. Exposure was 15 secs @ f16 (4 secs metered plus reciprocity compensation). Shot on Ilford HP5+.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for your response and compliment.

Actually, I never troubled about the shadow - it seemed to balance (or triangulate with) other dark areas (trees, church roof) in the image.
Now that you mention it, removal probably would be an improvement.

I always thought the shadow was from another headstone but can't remember. It could be my camera.

Very nice Dennis. I like the shadow on the church. Thought there was 3 trees at first. Perfect time of day for the shot to get that lined up nicely. Tonal values in the sky offer a nice contrast to the bright church.

Thanks, Bryan.
It really did look like there were 3 trees at the moment. That's what caught my eye.
The light was quite wonderful - late in the day, low angle autumn light.
Any other time, the sun's angle would not have been so perfect as to cast a shadow on the building creating the appearance of a 3rd tree.

Two interiors from the First Congregational Church of Chester (NJ). "The founders of the First Congregational Church were descendants of the English Puritans who first settled in Long Island, NY. The First Congregational was organized in 1740, and the first house of worship was erected in 1747. The current building was built in 1856, and the pipe organ was purchased and installed in 1873." (excerpts from church pamphlet).

Both images are scans from HP5+ negatives developed in PMK, taken with Schneider 80XL lens on a Canham DLC^2 4x5. I will be making "wet" 11x14 prints in my darkroom later.

Doug, Orgraph: Thanks.
Doug: I used the "grid" option on my Photoshop scan of the interior, and it looks squared up to me; of course when I exposed the sheet, I used the levels on the rear standard to set the verticals and horizontals as best I could. Could you give me a little more insight on what you are seeing in the horizontal level?

Also, since you commented on the troupe de l'oeil painting, here is the commentary from the church's website: "The Trompe l'oeil painting, a series of 12 columns marching back through the scene in perspective and said to represent the 12 disciple or pillars or the church." Amazingly, it had been painted over with other scenes, and was found and restored during renovations

Peter
At first sight it does look out of horizontal, but a careful eye-scan shows that not to be true.
My opinion is that it's due to the dis-symmetry of the chandelier chains creating an optical illusion.
You're good, no worries

chassis
27-Oct-2017, 20:37
Peter, I like the first image, to me it is well executed. The chandelier arms do give a bit of illusion of non-horizonality.

The second image is a little busy. The perspectives of vertical pipes and the oblique view of the cantor's podium seem to be in conflict.

"The Birds" scared me when I saw it. I think I first saw it when it came out, at the drive-in. My kids saw it as teenagers, and laughed at it. Never scared them, they thought it was funny. I guess that comes from seeing "Aliens" first.

Prince Williams Parrish Church - Built around 1750, burned by the British in the Revolutionary war. Rebuilt, burned by Sherman's army around 1865. Alternative info says that interior was gutted to rebuild houses in area that had been burned by the Sherman's men.

rfesk gave the history above. I think abandoned churches are fairly common here...usually burned or otherwise rendered unusable.

My wife and I actually during our first date found an old abandoned church, were later engaged and married there - located near Waycross, GA:

The statue of Michael defeating Lucifer isn't stone but rather a resin composition and only stands about 24 inches. It took a while to finally photograph the statue because it was being vandalized nearly every Friday night and then repaired. The sword had been broken off. The wings were constantly being broken off and repaired. I shot the picture about 3 years ago and went back a week later to shoot some more photos but it had disappeared.

Beautiful shots. Reminds me of the Produkin-Gorskii collection at the Library of Congress.

If you're not familiar with it, see https://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/prok/about.html

Please remember the threads in this forum are for large-format photos. I just moved a post with roll-film photos to a new thread by the same name in the “everything else” images forum.

I'm rescanning and "reinterpreting" some old negatives. 4x5 with 90mm lens, HP5+, D-76. Underexposed, dirty negative, but I managed to salvage the image. You can find the story behind the photo at my blog: https://www.greggwaterman.com/post/sometimes-you-just-get-lucky

This is St Mary's Church, Stoughton, West Sussex. The church dates from around 1070 although the windows although parts were added later. you can read more about the church at https://sussexparishchurches.org/church/stoughton-st-mary/

Shot with a Wista 45DX and 75mm f5.6 Super Angulon. HP5 developed in DDX 1+9

H2oman,an exceptional photograph. Tobias, an especially fine use of this focal length, which so easily creates the forced wide-angle affect that draws attention to itself and away from the image.

Thanks Philip and Ben. This thread seems to be packed with exceptional images - I hadn't really taken appropriate care in looking through them until now.
